Right lad's away from title winning or parade talk here's a question. What former player now commentator do you not mind and which get's right up your nose?
A) Martin Keown
B) Michael Owen.

{Ed047's Note - Owen Hargreaves winds my watch big time
and I like Glenn Hoddle

Roy Keane is a broken record who is talking himself out of future managerial employment every time he opens his mouth. I remember in Klopp’s third season Keane declared that Liverpool were going nowhere under Klopp! He never got over Fergie dumping him when he was past his best, this despite having witnessed Fergie do that to almost everybody else throughout his time at Old Trafford.

Steve Claridge is quite astute and doesn’t take it all too seriously. But Mourinho was the best by far at analyzing a game.

Likes: Glenn Hoddle. Hansen before he retired. Mourinho before he got the spurs job. Ruud Gullit i thought was decent as well. Peter Crouch purely for being the coolest most lovely bloke in football. Probably a couple more i can’t remember off the top of my head.

Dislikes: Merson, Nicholas, Jason Cundy. Consistent utter nonsense 100% of the time. Souness just comes across as constantly confused. Gary Neville used to be okay but the crisis at United has firmly sent his head spinning. Honourable mention for Martin Tyler, a man who shows a clear distain for Liverpool in his commentary, as well as Jermaine Jenas, purely because he seems to be on every single sporting tv channel every second of the day, he is inescapable and i have now convinced myself he is either omnipotent or a time traveller.

Not sure if its my bias but ex-Man U players irritate me as pundits particularly Van Persie, Michael Owen and Paul ‘Interesting’ Scholes.
Having said that, i like Gary Neville.

Neil mellor is my favourite, Henry was terrible imo.

Tim "The Dim" Sherwood is perennially insufferable and his bitterness towards us is a huge cause for concern mentally, IMO.

Hoddle winds me up. The sooner he gets out of harry kanes bumcheeks the better. don't mind Clinton Morrison on sky though but its hard to choose they all annoy me.

Have to say, have enjoyed hearing what Crouchy has to say, and I don’t think I can say that about any of the others. He seems a top bloke who knows it’s just a game, and obviously likes to have a laugh and doesn’t take himself too seriously. So got to say :

He’s big,
He’s red,
His feet stick out the bed,
Peter Crouch!

Jenas injured for 10 years, talks about the game as if he's been there done it all for the best teams around. Usually totally wrong with his post match analysis.

1) Neville's generally a decent commentator and pundit, well apart from the "OOOOHHH! " that you get whenever there's a good save or someone beats their man. He's not massively insightful tactically, but I honestly don't think many of the player turned pundits are, and he's probably one of the better ones. When Rafa, Mourinho and Wenger have done punditry in the past year, they've run rings around the ex-players.

I was also fond of John Giles for a while. Before he developed his tendancy to ramble.

2) Cannot stand Michael Owen at all. His voice alone can kill witches.
Also an Irish TV thing, Richard Sadlier always comes across as very, very bitter and angry.

I like hoddle too. Thought he was a good manager as well. Old school commentary. Knows what he's on about. I like danny Murphy too.

Keown's an idiot. Feet like paint brushes! Twot. Micah richards is too biased imo.

Crouch is a goodun. Don't like linekar (is that sacrilege)

Likes: Gullit, Mourinho (pre-Spurs), Crouch and Robbie Earle (if you can get on any American NBC streams) . I quite enjoy watching Peter Schmeichel too just for coming across as such a smurf, but funny without knowing it.

Dislikes: Hoddle, Owen, Jenas, Danny Murphy. However, no-one can get any worse than Steve Nicol and Shaka Hislop on ESPN. How Nicol could be such an outstanding and intelligent player but be so utterly thick; I just cannot figure out how it's possible. The dribble that is spouted out of his mouth is ridiculous.

Like - Graeme Souness

Can’t stand - Literally everyone else but particular Steve Nicol, Danny Murphy and Jermaine Jenas.

Like/ enjoy G. Neville, Crouch, Souness,
Dislike Jenas Murphy and Crooks.

{Ed047's Note - forgot about that halfwit Crooks his team’s of the week on the BBC website are a joke! 🤦‍♂️

I like souness but Neville and Keane are so bitter they make ed25 look as sweet as a nut.

{Ed025's Note - i am as sweet as a nut lerchy.. :)

Spud Murphy is quality. He talks sense, is very open and honest I’m in his analysis too

Contrast that with Owen.

{Ed025's Note - murphy is a prat aggerdo, as bad as owen and macnanaman who are to commentating what karius is to goalkeeping...there is a trend though mate.. :)

Can’t abide Andy Townsend but I do like Gary Neville, even though he’s a manc.

Lineker is okay. He seems to be one of the few who has transitioned well from an on field career to an off field career. I like Steve McMahon, Ian Wright and Graeme Souness. Even Dion Dublin makes me laugh sometimes; I don't expect anything cerebral from him. I don't care much for the ex ManU brigade; they don't even try to hide their clear bias. Gary Neville being the exception to that, more and more. Carragher is okay. But honestly, that high pitch in his voice can be very grating at times.

Jason MacAteer really got my goat with his last comment about Klopp's possible departure. He really has no freaking idea what he is talking about most of the time. No match to his contemporary Danny Murphy.

I really like Alice Jones (is that her name? Arsenal and England player) but for very different reasons. Tbf she is quite knowledgeable.

Steve nicol apparently said he'd rather Liverpool went unbeaten in the league than win the treble. That's the prem, the fa Cup AND the champions league. What planet is he on?

Jenas really does my nut in on motd extra. I watched it once and it was so quick. They talk about one thing and 40 seconds later they're on a completely different subject. It made me feel really old and i think Jenas is my age!

Yeah I like wrighty too! Forgot about him. He's funny and honest. Doesn't always get it right but seems a good bloke. I like the fact he is always bigging up the brothers. He did it back in the day when football was rife with racism and it took some balls.

Tim cahill was absolutely awful on his 2 or 3 motd appearances. On his last time he used a double negative and linekar and? Shearer I think looked at each other. The look said it all "Tim's out"

Murphy has quite a few dislikes on here but he seems a good bloke to me. I don't understand the hate? I liked him as a player too. Clever and a great passer.

I tell you who I really like but he's not an ex player. Dan the man from football focus. Good lad. And Mark lawrenson always makes me laugh. My favourite pundit moment was Robbie fowler almost in tears when we beat Barcelona. What a legend!

I think the actual commentating by Mcmanaman is woeful, Tyler hates Liverpool. Quite like the stuff Cara and Neville do. Lot of banter and decent pundits on the defensive side.

21.) 26 Jan 2020
26 Jan 2020 10:20:01
Used to like rte when Giles, Brady and dunphy were on it and started arguing, like Carra and Neville banter, can't think of anyone I dislike too much, like hoddle and what a player he was.

Like Graeme Souness, straight talking, no nonsense.
Dislike Garth Crooks as he talks utter nonsense while trying to sound insightful and intelligent.
All the others are the same.

As an American, I can't fathom why Steve Nicol is still employed by ESPN. The two Robbies are good though. NBCSN by and large does a great job of presenting the matches. One I liked to see surprisingly is Tim Howard. Was odd to see him commentating on Liverpool games while still employed by Everton, but even then he was sensible.

25.) 26 Jan 2020
26 Jan 2020 14:06:48
Robbiesline, I don’t hate Danny Murphy or any of the others (I don’t know any of them personally so I can’t hate them) but I genuinely can’t stand any of them as pundits other than Graeme Souness. What I want from media football pundits is that they provide me with a knowledge and insight into a professional football match that I would not otherwise have. What virtually all of them provide is statements of the blindingly obvious and a series of well-worn football cliches. They are also totally inconsistent in their views - Eg “Salah went down far to easily there” but “Kane felt contact and was entitled to go down”. Really, they get money for old rope.
