Championship manager. Those were the days. Hardly any snow flakes (there was but they had no social media to cry about everything) only 2 genders, alcohol and fuel were much cheaper, people could happily eat meat, and the country was still being run by morons. What a time to be alive.

Premier Manager 2 was the reason I started supporting Liverpool, as after managing Halifax Town all the way to the premier league, I got an offer I could not refuse.

I think Championship Manager 2 specifically also needs a special mention, with Fowler and Collymore scoring like +100 goals each every season.

I vaguely remember a Ultimate Football Manager game in the Premier Manager days. But, only the title.

Oh, the hours spent.

Oh ed, I think you are too harsh on this is football. Once you got into the controls it was a pretty fun football game. Also world league soccer 98 was great craic but truly to forget “striker” on snes is a crime. That game was amazing! Obviously football manager/ championship manager is the king.

{Ed001's Note - I never had a SNES mate. I didn't forget Striker, I just never played it.}

Right off you go with an emulator ed, you won’t regret it 😉.

{Ed001's Note - I will take your word for it don't worry.}

Thanks ed loved this article! Completely agree about all of it tbh, PES always a much better game than FIFA and although I still play a lot of FIFA it's sickening how it's evolved into a money grabbing scheme!

Champ man 03/ 04 was always my favourite game, can't even bring myself to buy football manager anymore because, as you mention, it should really just be an update each season rather than £50 on new skins!

Big shout to jumpers for goalposts too lol.

For me pro evo 5 was the peak of football games back on the PS2. That inter Milan side with Adriano and obafemi martins up top with figo, recobo and stankovic feeding them while cambiasso and veron bossed the midfield.

But there was nothing more enjoyable than getting immersed into championship manager when you were building a team destined for greatness. That game used to make real life time disappear in an instant, leading to many all night sessions after saying you'd play just one more game at 10pm😂.

Thanks for the article, brought back some funny memories.

Completely agree @Har_red92

Lost hours, days. years on this one and that Inter team was the best. Actually stopped playing consoles because of it!

If PES had all the proper names and competition's it would beat FIFA hands down, can't they just join up both companies 😉.

Thanks Ed, as someone who has addicted to many different versions of football computer games I loved the article. Championship manager 2 effectively ruined my secondary school grades, and I started playing on Fifa94 on the sega 2 where all the players celebrated scoring goals like Pele did in real life (you could actually win games by continually pressing "shoot" non stop so obviously not very realistic back then but still fun. ) It was fun in those days looking for bugs in the game, like Fifa96 where you could use the Long pass and curl it into the goal from around the half way line. You mentioned virtua striker was a terrible game, but it was a game my friends and I were addicted to in the arcades because of its bugs. for example you could score by tapping "shoot" as lightly as possible from the corner of the penalty box and it will slowly roll between the goalkeeper's legs for a goal. That's just one example, there were many and it took a lot of skill to perfect scoring with those bugs! Anyway thanks again for the article, it was fun to read and reminisce about those times! :)

{Ed001's Note - was it skill or money it took to perfect on Virtua Striker?}

Haha probably a bit of both, but each game cost about 50 Singapore cents (maybe 20 pence) back then so skipping meals at recess was a small enough price to pay!

{Ed001's Note - they were a lot more in the UK.}
