Good evening Eds. I saw a report on ESPN that Liverpool is interested in Ben White, a defender on loan with Leeds from Brighton. I wanted to ask if there was any truth to the rumor. Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - I understand that Liverpool are still looking for a younger HG centre back having previously shown an interest in a couple of others.}

Would love for us to look at the Norwich cb but don’t think he’d leave them!

Ed, Sorry for my ignorance but what does HG mean?

{Ed002's Note - Home grown.}

Ben Godfrey's his name, Southern. I think we were linked to him maybe two or three seasons ago, don't know if we're still keeping tabs or interested though.

What's the plan for Gomez and Van den Berg if a young English CB is being sought? We also have Philips returning from loan. A CB is the least of our priorities.
We should be looking at HG full backs and midfielders instead.

Think Hoevers home-grown? could be wrong.

{Ed002's Note - Not at this time, but if he stays he will be.}

Oh okay, how long after signing does a young foreign player like Hoever become homegrown Ed?

{Ed002's Note - When he has spent three years signed for club in England or Wales between 16 and 21.}

Eds and reds, what is the issue with young Joe gomez? He was brilliant last season but looks a shadow of his former self. Lovren brought in instead of gomez against Leicester. I would have thought gomez's pace would be handy against a quick team like Leicester. Obviously we won so klopp got it right. I'm just so surprised to see gomez being shuvved off the ball by average players. There were times last season I thought gomez was van djike, in his blue boots.

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any specific issue with the player but right now he is not in the starting role.}

It’s called being a young player Robbiesline, Gomez is still only 22, at the same age Van Dijk was playing for Groningen. It doesn’t help that people get on his back when he plays a couple of bad games.

Great point Thunderbird, even I've been guilty Of doubting Gomez a bit but it's only when you add that kind of context that you think the lad needs a bit of patience!

No, and when he has been he hasn't been brilliant. I thought he was going to be massive this season. He still could be of course. Early doors yet. Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking maybe the signing of van der berg has had an effect in training
I think virgil prefers to play with matip, I don't know. I really hope he isn't a guy who's promise is deterred by injuries.

effected by Van der Berg in training, I very much doubt it. Van de Berg is still finding his feet for the under 23's and taking time to get used to that level. IMO VDB is years away from the first team. Matip has moved ahead of Gomez but I am sure Gomez will get games at cb and rb.

Gomez played against Salzburg so was never going to start against Leicester as well.

I'm not trying to have a go. I really like gomez at cb. The contrast between this season and last is huge though. And you're right, he is still a young lad but next season he won't be and the following he'll be 24/ 25, coming into his prime. I get the feeling that gomez is still getting over the injury, and I think that's why he hasn't started for England either. One of the things that truly great players have is consistensy, and for that reason I'm hoping it's the injuries.

Gomez played 15 or 20 excellent games last season in Europe's tightest defence, he then breaks his leg and 8 months recovery later he has a couple of rusty games and people start to doubt his capabilities. Give the lad a break for Christ sake he's one of the world's best CBs for his age.

{Ed025's Note - here we go again har, hes a decent CB but we are talking worlds best when we should be talking decent young player...have a day off mate..

Personally I can't think of many 22 year old CBs I'd pick over Gomez. You really don't feel he's up there with the best of his age group?

What's wrong with Joe Gomez? Matip is playing better and Lovs had a blinder vs Leicester while Gomez struggled a bit vs Red Bull Salzburg. It's football, end of. Nothing else to see here.

On his performances over the first half of last season. Until his unfortunate injury. Joe Gomez was easily one of the best u21 centre backs in the world! How many 21 year olds are playing at that level and in a high profile club in such a competitive league and part of at the time best defensive unit in Europe?! Even his performances for England at the start of last season were very good including not giving Neymar a kick. 22 is really young for a centre back, even more so the fact poor lad has missed around 18month with injury the last 3 years! Context lads.
