Morning Eds,

Sorry if this appears a stupid question but on the subject of clubs being able to sign out of contract players or free agents once the transfer window has closed. Does a player have to be out of contract due to his contract having run down or what is there to stop a player buying himself out of his contract and therefore becoming a free agent? I take it I've missed something pretty obvious as otherwise only money would render the transfer window rules null and void.

{Ed002's Note - The players have to be out of contract at the start of the previous transfer window. And where would players get the money to pay any "buy out clauses" in their contracts?}

Thanks Ed002 The first bit of yiur answer explains it. Re:the second bit, absolutely although in effect the club that would sign the out of contract player could in effect pay it. I believe in Spain for any transfer to proceed the buy-out clause needs to be paid by the player although in reality the buying club would 'refund the player once the money has been deposited with the Spanish FA to facilitate the transfer.

{Ed002's Note - So they would not be signing a free agent then!!}
