I try to like migs but he is just a poor keeper. Nice guy, good character but poor. That fernades goal brought back the memories of him being number one. It was embarrassing.

I worry a bit about the state of our back up/ reserve/ youth keepers if he is the 2nd best option.

Virgil, I'm just speculating mate. Bravo is definitely starting as confirmed by Pep seeing as Ederson hasn't played much at in 2 months, but Alisson could very much start for us. He's played regularly all summer. I just wouldn't be surprised if Klopp goes mostly with players who have been available for longer than 6 days. I could be (I hope) totally wrong.

I'm just not sure Klopp values it as anything more than another friendly and with only 6 subs I'm not sure he'll risk the likes of Bobby, Salah, Shaq, Alisson, Keita etc from the start. Hopefully most of them come back much fitter than expected because of their international involvement deep into the summer.

{Ed047's Note - I cant get my head around Matip starting ahead of Joe Gomez in any game for Liverpool.

I agree Ed047. Gomez and Virg should be first choice. Klopp's team selections throughout pre-season haven't made that look a forgone conclusion though. He seems to really rate Matip.

{Ed047's Note - it seems a little odd mate as they are just so good together and Allison, Trent, Gomez, VVD, Robertson and Fabinho are for me the best defensive unit in the league mate.

Don’t see how you can call for matip to be benched. He played brilliant Last season. he starts for me . Even when joining the attack was better than Gomez. Deserves his place until such time he gets injured or messes up hopefully neither.

Matip was good scouse john but after vvd, gomez was our best performer in the cb role.

Ed47, it is simple. Matip has grabbed his chance in the last 5 months of the season and he earned the right to partner VVD. If Gomez wants his place back, he's going to have to rip that shirt off of Matip's back. That is football and people will need to get used to that.

Gomez may be a top talent with tremendous ability. However, he has Matip to deal with now and the fierce competition will only make him better. LFC have 4 CB's that can start for any top 6 team right now and that is testament to what Klopp has done with these players. If Matip starts the season with VVD, he would have earned it. It is that simple, really.

{Ed047's Note - Sorry for the late reply and I take your point RW but just don’t see Matip at the same level as Gomez mate.

It’s only my opinion but he looks head and shoulders the better defender and together last season up to his injury they were on another level altogether.

Yeah matip did well when he stepped in but Gomez was injured not dropped for poor form. Up until his injury he was arguably only behind VVD as the best performing CB in the league. Their partnership was the best in Europe for first few months. Matip did well but our defence did start giving up a few more chances without Gomez. It's a new fresh season, Gomez is now fit and he's proven that his partnership with VVD is one of the best around. He has to start ahead of matip for me in our strongest defence. He will now know that matip will replace him if his performance level is not high, a great situation to have strong competition between CBs.
