Where does carragher rate as one of liverpools best (European cup winning) cbs? He must be top 10, right? They don't have to have won the ucl, for the sake of argument.

Hansen
Hughes
Hypia
Vvd
Carragher

I dunno, i don't really remember much before 85.

Be interested to hear your thoughts. Agger would be in my top 10 also. Is there a shout for henchoz?

I don’t think carra was on hansens level nor vvd really, he just had so much heart and desire to not concede goals.

Personally I don't think Carragher was that good. He wasnt that commanding, wasnt very fast and couldn't pass that well. He had determination and he was vocal but that was it for me, oh and he came from Liverpool. Distinctly average for me.

Top 10 yes but he wasn't who I'd say was an incredible defender, he was good but that's as far as I'll go personally.

I know what you mean firmane. Born defender. He isn't on Hansen level, of course. Not many ever have been have they.
He played loads of games as a rb and a lb. I think 2005/ 2006/ 2007 were his best years. He is undoubtedly a liverpool legend. Must be top 10. Is he top 5.

Irish, that’s pushing it. Carragher wasn’t the defensive titan that he can be made out to be by some, but he was certainly better than average.
Heart and courage goes much further as a defender than it does in other positions, and whilst he wasn’t as quick as Gomez by any stretch I can think of a hundred defenders slower than Carragher without too much effort.
That said, he was nowhere near VVD or Hyypia as an overall defender.

Mark Lawrensen. Ron Yeats.

Thompson would be above him in that list, did lawrenson win it too?

{Ed001's Note - Tommy Smith was everything Carra was but better at it. He has to be in there too.}

Of course ed, I forgot he’d won it!

Tommy Smith. Of course, forgot.

And yeah, a bit harsh irish. He was a good passer of the ball and a brilliant tackler. Was hard to get past in his prime.

I'd say he'd just barely make the top 10 as a cb.

Spot on, LoweLFC, Carra only made it due to sheer will and heart and a refusal to be denied a career as a footballer. He himself said that he had to play all both fullback positions just to get into the team even tho his real position was at CB (cos he was simply not better than Hyppia and Henchoz, period) .

Carra was a very good defender who played for the shirt and was a very brave on the pitch who led the team well for the most part BUT let's be clear, he is NOWHERE near the level in terms of ability, skill and talent of those CB's the OP mentioned. not in the least, IMO.

Smith, Hughes Hansen Thompson Lawrenson Hypia Carragher Vvd and Matip, were your choices That's 9 so Carragher Definitely makes top 10. Carragher only ahead of Matip for me. Smith would have eaten a team of Carraghers.

Carragher played in the robbie William's charity match a few weeks ago and completely bossed the fastest man in the world Usain bolt. Yes he is not the most skillful, but his never say die attitude is what made him special.

{Ed025's Note - i must say i was a big fan of his....then the spitting incident happened and i lost all respect for him..

What about Larry Lloyd who partnered Tommy Smith, Ron Yeats too. Gary Gillespie and the late Gary Ablett. For me these players had more to their game than Carragher. Just my opinion of course, not gospel.

Who put matip in the top 10? He had a good second half of the season and he started his lfc careeer quite well. But he is nowhere near the top 10, there is time but i don't see it.

Phil Thompson is a great shout, can't believe i forgot him.

Anyone reckon gomez has a chance of making that top 10? I think a definite yes if he can put his injuries behind him and play a few solid seasons.

Cant remember being as excited by a young cb for a long time.

Carra did also get beat by usain bolt mind, bad reading of a bounce!

Spot on, Ed25. That spitting incident from Carra was reprehensible and the only thing more reprehensible than his conduct, was the conduct of the ones who actually had the audacity to actually defend him.

I seriously can't believe you guys forgot Daniel Agger.
