Reports from Italy about possible move for Lovren from Milan. Thoughts?
Personally, I like the guy. He seems to be best mates with half the squad :) His joy in Madrid, though a sub, was excellent. He's clearly a good guy to have around the squad, question is, is he happy being now 4th choice CB? After his comments after the World Cup I doubt it, so if the move materialises and the fee is decent, then good luck to him.

He's hit and miss one game he can be an absolute monster and look brilliant the next he looks like a bull in a china shop. I think he will want more game time and now he has a CL medal I expect he will be happy to move to a club less likely to win trophies to get that game time. Also from an LFC perspective I'd imagine he's our second highest paid defender behind VVD and not even making the team so it might be better to free some of the wages up.

If we’re talking about needing perfect seasons to best City then we can’t afford Lovren’s odd bad days anymore. The City away game comes to mind. Good guy, too highly strung for us to rely on.

I think if a good offer comes in, we would let him go.
I also think if you could remove the brain farts he has, he would be a top defender
The thing that makes VVD the player we see is his game intelligence.
Lovren just rushes in and gives free kicks away.
The attackers know he's going to get too close and draws the foul off him.

Lovs who I actually rate ability wise, may not be happy being potentially 4th choice (when all CB's are fit) for another season so even tho he is well-liked by Klopp and the other boys, he may be willing to move on esp. since he just turned 30.

First of all, he was only 4th choice because he was injured a fair bit last season. I dare say he would have got plenty of game time had he stayed healthy. It just happens that Matip actually done very well. Saying that, it would be difficult to get someone of his calibre to play backup but you can't really stand in the way of his career either. I would love him to stay, we need some experienced guys but, it's up to him I guess.

I’m a good guy and a good laugh il be the man for a sniff of what lovern makes! We can’t carry passengers because they are good people!

For me I would say thanks Dejan but time to move on now, we have matip gomez Virgil and Fabinho who can all play centre back so having someone who is 4th choice on a 100k per week makes no sense to me
get a fair prive for him and bring through a youngsters from within the reserves.

Is it just me? It must be! People go on about matip been good, was he? VVD looked after him, matip had the ODD decent game but that's about it for me, he'd be the first defender I'd replace, he scares me half to death. And don't start with 'he helped the team get all the way to lifting the trophy' nonsense, karius got us to the final last year. If people prefer matip over lovren that's fine, I disagree but we all think differently I just can't understand how people can call matip good, he's average at best.

Lovren for me should be ahead of Matip but due to him getting injured this changed. I don't think he will be going anywhere this summer. Unless we get a decent offer of course.

Do we have any young centre backs that are expected to make the step up though? Or buy a young centre back that can also cover Robbo at LB?

Until Gomez got injured he was Virgils partner. Then Lovren, then Matip. That they couldn’t get back in the team when fit again says a lot for our options at the back. If none want to leave I’m fine with that, if we need a replacement then we won't be short of options.

I agree Johncrow. Nat Phillips is highly regarded apparently.

@Jay Dub Red: I heard you are a misogynist and don't clean your hands after having a wee. Hardly a great Lovren replacement.

So who do we replace him with? 25 mil isn't a lot. Who can we sign for so little to replace?

We can't go into a title challenge with 3 cbs and young hoever. Especially when 2 of them are gomez and matip. Great players but so injury prone.

Right or wrong my view of Lovren, despite knowing he was not first choice, is that he put the shift in. Forget the wage bills the club can manage those affairs. As fans where we can make a difference, I feel we should be backing a player who did a sterling job as in-fill defence for us. He is blatantly not the best defender we’ve seen but his heart and head are in the right places. With VVD coupled, he did very little wrong and I’d be happy knowing that we have that level of cover on the pitch.
Regarding an earlier comment about Manchester City, I actually think on that occasion Klopp failed to react to City bringing on an additional attacker which resulted in us conceding.

Ed1, my opinion is clear, I'd choose lovren over matip. May I ask what your opinion is? I know both aren't great defenders and imo matip is far from one but it'd be interesting to see who you'd choose out of the two?

{Ed001's Note - that would depend, if they are happy to stay on the bench, then I fail to see the need to get rid of either. As back ups they are fine, though both have injury problems and Lovren is getting older so his injuries are only going to become more problematic. So it has to be Lovren that would go while he has some value.}

Very good point actually Ed now you've put it like that, who can argue against it lol. That's me clamped because I don't know what to say hahaha!

Thanks mate, always good to hear your opinion.

I'd keep Lovren.
I think most people have the spurs game triggering confirmation bias whenever he errs.
They all make mistakes.
Remember the Fulham away goal?
Milner. VVD. Allison.
imagine we hadn't got that peno?

Lovren is a very good centre back.
