Brilliant as always Ed. I was never a fan but always respected him. His methods always bothered me, but it's hard to argue against his results. Is it true that he always wanted to manage Liverpool, or was that just a silly rumour?

{Ed001's Note - he said once he wanted to manage Liverpool, but whether that stayed with him or not once he moved to English footie I have no idea.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed.}

I'd agree that being at Madrid caused the shift in his public persona. When he was there, even when he did win the league, the narrative was all about how great Pep's Barcelona were, playing the best football ever, and tiki-taka this and tiki-taka that. That'd drive anyone to being snarky and miserable.

Tactically, I think he got more negative too. His first Chelsea side used creative players like Duff, Robben and Cole, Lampard constantly breaking forward from midfield, and he even put Gudjohnsen in midfield in his first season there to link midfield to attack. Didn't really see that the same way when he came back to Chelsea, and certainly not at Man Utd.

On the few clips I've seen of him doing punditry for beIN Sports he seems like a bloke who just genuinely loves football. Maybe he should carry more of that into his public persona at his next job.

{Ed001's Note - the media in Spain were horrible to him as well. They did not like him from the start, partly because he was Portugese and partly because Iker Casillas would feed them stories because Jose wouldn't kowtow to him like previous managers did.}

I couldn't stand Jose when he first managed Chelsea in the way that I didn't like Ronaldo at United he was brilliant and it drove me nuts. what a rivalry he and Benitez had constant mind games. I didn't follow his career in Spain but heard it didn't go well when he came back to EPL he was completely different I'd listen to his press conference and think crying again what happened to you

Anyways great article ed hope we see a reinvigorated Jose one day.

Cheers Ed. Like someone said above, I think LFC fans disliked him purely because he was so annoyingly good! What a CV though. He does seem like a really nice guy when he's not managing a team as well.

Agree whole heartedly ed01. Its odd how many players/ managers come back from madrid Barcelona disenchanted.
