Bit harsh on fab and matip mate, I actually thought both were excellent. Gutted about that result, we deserved so much better. I'll tell you one thing though, I'll never go to the nou camp as an away fan ever again, what an absolute joke. I may as well have watched it on my phone, I'd have seen something.

Fab had the worst game I’ve seen him play and Matip was average.

Excellent summary mate was spot on in my opinion. Definetly agree with your point on Messi I was really puzzled by the media reaction. On to the second leg now Anfield will make it a special night, I expect Klopp to go 4-2-3-1 hopefully he brings Trent, Shaqiri, Firmino in to the starting line up.

I hope your right Alonso. Great summary ed1 mate not only media even our fans were puzzled by Messi 😜.

It was interesting to see Suarez celebrating after the goals. If you compare this with Ryan Babel's celebration for Fulham, or Sturridge's / Salah celebrations after scoring against Chelsea there was a sense of respect for the former clubs. I did not feel that with Suarez. Perhaps I am. old fashioned and expect a certain level of respect (which isn't the case anymore and certainly not with Suarez) . ED002 has never held back in his opinions of Suarez. I think many may now see his point of view.

No way will Shaqiri start. Trent and Firmino if he is fit.

Great read as always, Ed. I kind of disagree a bit on the Matip and Hendo rating as I h=thought both played well esp. Matip who outplayed VVD by some distance, IMO. I also thought Hendo gave us more thrust and control after he came on esp. in the second half when we were on top.

As for Gomez at RB, I had suspected weeks ago that he would play RB in that game and I was proven right. I knew Klopp would not risk playing TAA due to the gaps he often leaves in behind and tho he would have offered a lot more going forward, at the Camp Nou is not the place to be doing that and leaving gaps behind so ne issues with Klopp there.

Like you, a 3-0 score is a poor result BUT I can't just say that and then ignore how solidly overall we played. With the chances we created and the way we dominated them, not scoring a goal or two is what disappoints me more and we got to do better in the final games of the season. On to Newcastle.

I noticed in the picture that Gomez is the only one with his hands not covering his unmentionables. He's either bloody tough, or a eunuch :)

Nice one Ed, I was surprised hendo didn’t start and I really think Klopp needs to utilise his subs more and use them earlier.

{Ed001's Note - thanks mate.}

Good review.
Don’t agree with the comment of Barcelona basically being Messi plus 10 others, they have some good players and if it really is Messi + 10 then that’s a worrying statement given our 3-0 pasting.

Also don’t understand how Wijnaldum gets a 4.5 when Coutinho gets a 2.

Having said that, much better review than anything I could’ve produced, thanks 👍.

{Ed001's Note - because Gini was just anonymous, so had little effect on the game either way, whereas Couts was honking and held them back.

As for a 3-0 pasting, that is simply not true. It was not a pasting. They scored more goals but they never dominated the game or took us apart. It was not a pasting mate. As for the Messi + 10 others, just go back and watch how 4 or 5 players are drawn to Messi each time he has the ball, that is the difference he makes. We have been taking advantage of Salah having 2 or 3 on him all the time in the Prem to overload opponents elsewhere, Barca have an even bigger overload around the pitch, so they don't need an outstanding team to beat other teams. In effect, they have a numerical advantage just by having Messi in the team.

You are very welcome.}

Spot on eds.
do you think we stand a chance of going though to the final eds1.

{Ed001's Note - never accept anything is over until the final whistle goes. Even then we have seen teams thrown out of Europe in the past after matches have played, so who knows? You just have to hope we give it a good go and see what happens.}

Fair review, Ed001, thanks a lot. There's been a considerable amount of commentary about Klopp's choice of going with Wijnaldum to fill in for Firmino. Granted Gini did not have a good game, but I don't see what else Klopp could have done? We all know that teams put out a defensive setup at away games and then hope to get a decisive win at home with an attacking strategy, in these cup competitions. Nowhere do Shaquiri, Origi or Sturridge offer the same defensive capability Firmino does at an away game, so I'm not surprised Klopp didn't pick them to start. In my opinion, the strategy was right but perhaps the execution was not? It could have worked out just fine if Keita had not been injured.

One question for you though, Ed. If Firmino was okay to play the last 12 minutes why couldn't he have started the first 12 minutes and see how it goes? Is it because Klopp had his eye on the upcoming Newcastle and Wolves games? Something that he says he never ever does (look beyond the next game)?

{Ed001's Note - you can't start someone who is known to be not fit enough to play the 90. If he could have started he would have.}

Thanks for that Ed. I never thought I'd ever see such a low rating for VVD.

{Ed001's Note - he was terrible and that was something I thought I would never see in the big games. So it was unexpected as he was concentrating and giving all but just not spotting runs or positioning himself correctly. I do think that the main problem was he was focused on Messi, with good reason.}

Ed you mentioned teams being thrown out after the whistle. I assume you were saying nothing is taken for granted rather than suggesting there is something behinds the scenes with Barcelona we're not aware of?

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, I didn't mean to imply Barca are likely to be thrown out.}

Great review Ed, I'm really glad somebody has finally mentioned about VVD. I like the lad, he's had a fantastic season overall but that was by far his worst performance for Liverpool imo. Still though, they can't be great every game I suppose, it just surprised me. Hat trick tomorrow please lad! lol cheers Ed mate.

{Ed001's Note - to be fair Messi can cause any defender to have a bad day.}

I was quite shock how poor VVD was. The first goal Suarez pointed were he was going to run and VVD was the only one to see this but never went with him.
Funny how he picks up all the awards and then has a stinker!

such mixed felings, most of me felt like the scoreline was unfair at 0-3. But then I recall Dembele's 2 chances at the end that could have made it 0-5!? So all in all, 3 goals down is not great, but there is hope in the next leg. I hope those fans who have given, give themselves an early night to bed next week, or a sleep-in wherever you are in the world.

I think Salah deserves a better rating. He missed an easy chance but his all round play was class. His dribbling was ridiculous don't think he got tackled once and that pass to Mane was glorious. One of his best games in a red shirt which is why we played so well, shame about the finishing.

A fair review, I think.
And I'm not going to criticise the team selection after the event; I would have been more conservative.
I just wish we'd have controlled the game better at one down. We were in control but looked too desparate to score but without the usual firepower.
But it's easy to want 1 goal defeat after a 3 goal one.

21.) 03 May 2019
03 May 2019 10:59:37
I think with the amount of press VVD has got recently, well, all season, he knew all eyes would be mainly on him to stop Messi, maybe this got to him psychologically? I really don't know but that's one thing that came to my mind. I don't blame the lad. Like you say Ed, it's Messi he was up against, I don't think there's a defender out there who would find handling him easy.

Thanks, Ed for responding to those saying LFC got a pasting. If that was a pasting then Utd got a hiding of a lifetime at the Camp Nou. Why? Cos they were a shambles for 75 minutes while we were brilliant for 75 minutes and got done by mistakes and not taking our chances.

I refuse to believe this pathetic "zero-sum" nonsense where as long as you win, the performance does not matter OR as long as you lose, the performance does not matter. IT DOES. They scored the goals, yes BUT they never cut us open nor took us to pieces. We dominated and even they and their fans knew it before the goals clast two goals came.

You can dominate a game and STILL lose (like City did vs Palace this season) AND you can suffer thru a game and STILL win by a wide score line, just like LFC did vs Porto who had enuff chances in both legs to score at least 3 goals YET got pummeled 6-1. That's football. You accept it and move on and always trying to look for someone to blame after playing so well in a game where you did everything BUT score is just petulant nonsense, IMO.

Wolf - Klopp will be judged on results not match statistics. You can go on about shots on goal but they don’t bring you success. Goals bring success and the owners want success.
The longer you fail to win trophies the more difficult it becomes to recruit top players. The fewer top players you have the less entertaining your football, the less attractive your club. The owners are not going to let that happen.
