I hate international breaks, they wind me up because people speak about England as if they're a good team suddenly. Fact is, they aren't.

Let's go back to normal football, something different. We're all different ages, who in YOUR life time was the best Liverpool player in your opinion?

For me it has to be the king, I almost feel sorry for the youngsters who didn't get to see him. Legend in many ways! Rush is a very close second.

I only started watching in 2004, so for me it has to be Gerrard. Absolutely adored him and modelled my own game off of him. Closely followed by Andri Voronin.

What’s your problem with England Salah?
Thought they did well in the two games played, blooding youngsters as well.
I’m a Liverpool fan but I’m also English so it makes me happy that both Liverpool and England are doing well?
Not having a pop just don’t get the hate on here sometimes.

Not hate mate, I just think they're sh*te that's all, loads of people expect them to work wonders and they never do. The football is terrible. I'd rather watch paint dry.

England were World Cup semi finalists in 2018 and won the under 17 World Cup in 2017. They have a lot of good young players coming through, things are looking up for England. You don’t have to like them but don’t be bitter that they are no longer rubbish.

I'd have to say Fowler, yes he had his problems but he was such an instinctive finisher.
Obviously I am discounting some massive players like Gerrard Alonso Torres Suarez. But Fowler was my idol as a kid, so he just nicks it.

My top 3 is 1-Xabi Alonso, 2- Our Spanish Number 14 under Rafa 3- The midfielder who scored our equalizing goal in Istanbul in 2005.

Midfield Maestro in every sense. So classy he might as well have played in a tuxedo.

Salah, the England team is much better than it used to be . credit in part to Southgate , and he is lucky to have few decent players.
I personally think the previous generation of Gerrard, Lampard Scholes etc was better, shame they were managed by dinosaurs.

{Ed001's Note - it is the same every single tournament qualifiers, beat a minnow or two, such as Montenegro, and suddenly England are once again world beaters. They are not. Or even close to it. Despite international football being dire.}

Ed01, surely you can see the improvement in the way England play though? Until recently I hated watching England, but I'm enjoying watching them play at the moment, we've got a lot of exciting young players.

Nothing wrong with getting carried away supporting a team and hoping they are world beaters, I've done it every season with Liverpool! Hopefully I'll be right this year!

{Ed001's Note - I find international football tedious and boring. It is no longer the pinnacle of the sport sadly. So no, I see the same old England just playing against dross that allows them to look good.}

Ed01 + Salah, but don't your eyes light up every World Cup? 😉.

{Ed001's Note - I used to love the World Cup and looked forward to it, but the last few have been dreadful.}

It's a weird one with England. In my opinion we don't have any world class players in the England set up. And around 12/ 13 years ago I would say we had about 5/ 6! Yet we seem to be a much better team. I think some credit needs to go to Southgate for giving youngsters a shot and making international football fun again for the players.

Saying that, I am still not too interested in international football unless its a tournament or some Liverpool players (a majority) are playing. I am biased but I believe at full fitness we would see Gomez, TAA and Hendo starting. possibly even Oxlade Chamberlain.

Whether your into International football or not, everyone would want to get used to England reaching the latter stages of these tournaments. Some of the kids coming through are the best around of their age to be added to the likes of Gomez, Trent, Alli, Sterling and Rashford.

Gerrard best for me in my time watch in the Pool, by a mile.

Lol exactly my point Ed1, we go and beat a small team and we hear how good England are. If we went and beat Panama we'd be hearing all the 'it's coming home' BS once again. It's nonsense.

Years ago I also used to love the WC, it stopped for me I'd say probably in the 90's, ever since it's just got worse and worse it's a tournament I'm just not interested in.

Lol smeg I knew one of you would bring up that we were semi finalists hahaha, did you see the teams we were playing? come on wake up. I'm not bitter about anything, I can just recognise sh*t when I see it. I'd love to see England win the WC but I'd be waiting forever hoping for such a thing.

Salah, it's true that our opponents at the last World Cup weren't great but you can only beat what is in front of you. Since then England have beaten Spain and Croatia, not too shabby.

The England team at the last World Cup was solid if not spectacular but look at some of the players now available for selection: Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Sancho, Hudson-Odoi, Dele Alli, Trent, Gomez, Chilwell not to mention the likes the Ox, Maddison and Henderson who are very good players and Foden, Sessegnon, Brewster and Gibbs-White who are still developing. The top clubs in world football would love to have most of these players.

International football isn't the same as it was 30 years ago but relative to other international teams now England are becoming a decent team and their future looks bright.

Detest intl football but have to say think the English team is a good one and only young too just glad it’s back to the bread and butter the wkend!
As for who I loved and thought who was the best I have to say it was chewy Suarez he was just unreal for me!

17.) 26 Mar 2019
26 Mar 2019 19:28:59
I started watching in 2005. I'm torn to be honest. I loved the likes of Agger, Hyypia, Lucas and Kuyt for the way they adopted the City and club as a second home.

I suppose your question is more ability based though. The 4 best purely on ability would have to be Gerrard, Alonso, Salah and Suarez but I lean really heavily towards Torres because he was my first childhood hero and the player I modelled my own playing style on as a kid.

18.) 26 Mar 2019
26 Mar 2019 19:38:07
I understand what you're saying smeg and I aren't calling you wrong mate but my point is we've been saying 'the future looks bright' for the England team for how long now? I do agree that there's some great talent coming through but will they win anything is the big question and in my opinion, no they won't.

No matter what, I wish them the best of luck but the days of me watching them are over because when I used to watch them I'd be bored out of my head, the players just weren't up for it and this happened for years, I expect nothing to change.

The arrogance is another big problem for me. The fans see us win the odd game and suddenly we're gods gift. The players think they're special and better than what they are, the way they spoke at the WC was as if they'd already won it! pundits go barmy if we beat any team yet when we get beat we're simply 'unlucky and we gave it a good go' I'd just call us 'sh*te' instead of making excuses up like the rest of them.

In the WC we saw all over the country people saying 'it's coming home' it was damn right embarrassing imo.

As an England supporter I haven’t said the future looks bright for about 15 years, the last tournament I thought we had a chance of winning was Euro 2004. The talent on the national team has got progressively worse since then but with a semi final appearance at the last World Cup and the young talent we have coming through I think England supporters have the right be optimistic. If that doesn’t excite you then what’s the point?

As for all the ‘it’s coming home’ stuff I think you’ll find a lot of that was tongue in cheek, not many people seriously expected England to win the World Cup.

Started watching in 97 and Owen was my childhood hero and we all know what happened there but he did score a hat trick at Selhurst Park the first game I ever went to. Ability wise, probably Torres, Suarez or Salah. Looking back Alonso has to be up there but not sure I really appreciated what he could do at the time plus iv always been a sucker for a striker.

I think England are average at best and I think international football is very slow and tedious.

Best player I've seen in my time? Fowler. Never seen a player so capable of scoring so many different types of goals and do so I. Any occasion under any level of pressure. Also his utter devotion to the club helps.
