Here’s a question for everyone.

Which player have you been most excited about when we signed.

For me it was Torres, I remember him breaking through at Athletico Madrid as a teenager, when we signed him I couldn’t believe we’d actually got him, then first game Chelsea, stands Terry up like a mug and skins him 😂

Hated the way he left but have to admit he was class those first couple of years.

Luis Suarez.

Virgil van Dijk.

Can I extend it out to any staff member?
For me it was Klopp. I couldn't believe that we managed to get him after the position we were in. Financially not in the best shape, low in the league and quite a poor squad and we got one of the best managers in the world. Especially as we had the likes of Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rogers beforehand.

Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish (plain Kenny in 1977). He came from Celtic to replace Kevin Keegan with a stellar reputation as one of the best to ever come out of Scotland and the rest is history.

{Ed025's Note - very good player WW, but an ever better human being mate..

Would have to agree on Torres. He was fantastic when he signed for us. Coutinho was exciting as well because I knew him from football manager.
Unfortunately I've had plenty of let downs, thought morientes was going to be fantastic and I had high hopes for Robbie Keane too.

Stan Collymore easily the biggest disappointment for me ever.

Modern day it has to be Allison. Bringing him in was just unreal imo because it was all nothing but rumours, then it actually happened. As much as I rate VVD, Fabinho, robbo etc the game changer is Allison.

Many will disagree with this comment but think about it, if we had Migs in goal would we be this far ahead in the PL and CL. Allison is unreal and imo the most important player in the squad. Defenders can do well but it means nothing if they have a crap GK behind them. We're lucky, we have Allison.

Coutinho, after buying him for years on fm I was sure we had nabbed a bargain at 8mil, over 100 mil profit and he scored some great goals. Good riddance in the end though.

Mine was Jari Litmanen, which didn’t go as his previous career suggested it would 🙄
Least inspiring Paul Konchesky and David Speedy (convinced that latter was just to prove Sir Kenny is human after all 🙃)

14.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 14:18:17
Alisson in modern times that was a stunning purchase, VVD I would say is a better player but he was expected to sign and I don’t think his reputation was that of Alisson before he signed.
I remember being excited by Torres, morientes and, Kewel though.

Are those decisions being made after we have seen how they have performed for us? I read the question differently, which players was I really excited we were buying and for me one was Torres as he was class act before he joined. Also Keita as he seemed one of the missing links we would need in midfield to take us up many levels, Fekir (never happened but like Keita looked to be another missing link and all round class act that had me salivating) . However, to pick one then it is Allison, to me he is maybe the only World Class player, upon joining, that we bought in the last few years. again just how I read the question.

Kenny, John Barnes then Collymore. 2 became absolute legends, the other an absolute waster.

I was really excited when we signed cisse, I thought he was going to be brilliant for us. Another 1 would be heskey, I had watched him for Leicester in a friendly against finn harps and he had to be taken off after 20 mins with 4 goals to his name. Lol! Him and Owen were brilliant for England U21 too.

16 Mar 2019 15:15:34
I, like you Mcgoveb, read the question, who excited the most at the time. I could go on and on! . Harry Kewell was another. What a waste of space he turned out to be.

21.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 15:19:22
Has to be Klopp or Alisson. Was shocked we got either of them.

22.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 15:28:29
Klopp for me - I couldn’t believe we got him after what he did for Dortmund and I felt he was going to be perfect for the club and would really be a big draw to help us sign top players. I also felt that the next manager after Rogers was critical to whether we progressed or slumped back into the usual 6-8 place finishes we’d been seeing for years.

In terms of players, Alisson has to be top of the list as we have been desperate for a GK for years, but Mane wasn’t far off. his signing added the pace we lacked upfront and showed the way Klopp wanted us to play. and then he scored that goal vs Arsenal!

Going back further I would say Torres, especially after that goal vs Chelsea.

Guys, just to remove any doubt, there was genuine excitement amongst Reds fans when Kenny signed in the Summer of 1977. He had earned a great reputation through his performances when playing for Celtic and Scotland and Liverpool were amongst a number of top English clubs who tried to sign him for quite a while - don’t forget he was 26 before he agreed to come South. It is fair to say he didn’t disappoint. He was our greatest player EVER (no argument, he was) and as Ed025 says, a great human being as well. Hail King Kenny!

Jonny Barnes from Watford most exciting player I've seen live. Took a lot of stick at the time, just done his talking on the pitch and rapping off it. Legend.

God second time round. Even though I knew he wouldn’t be at his peak I had goosebumps when I heard about his signing.

Christian Poulsen.

27.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 18:12:38
Alisson! I don’t think many would have been disappointed if we didn’t get him as we just spent a bunch on vvd, Fabinho and Keita. It cemented that we are team if we want a player we can just throw money at them. I really felt like a fan of a giant club. I haven’t felt like that my entire life. Each purchase is expected to hit world class levels within a season or two.

All of mine didn't live up to expectation.

Harry Kewell - he was amazing at Leeds. People were labelling him as the left footed Beckham.

Joe Cole - I couldn't believe how bad that signing worked out to be so wrong.

Phil Babb - Had an amazing world cup with Ireland before he signed - at least we signed John Scales in the same window who turned out to be decent.

El-Hadji Diouf - Likewise, had an amazing world cup and looked to be a complete world beater, but turned out to be a horrible person, a cheat and not very good at football. I couldn't think of anyone that I dislike more in football. He makes Ramos and Neymar look like saints.

Stewart Downing - How could someone with such a quality delivery end the season with 0 assists? I know we signed him to supply Andy Carroll, but I couldn't believe how many times we substituted Carroll for Downing and Vice Versa. They were hardly on the field at the same time.

I guess I should stop getting my hopes up about players. It might all be my fault.

Used to love watching Peter Beardsley weave his magic and terrorise the opposition with intricate pieces of skill in and around the 18 yard box. A brilliant buy from Newcastle around the time John Barnes arrived. One of my favourite players along with the obvious KK. Also loved David ”super sub” Fairclough, could always relied on to come off the bench to score a goal! VVD and Alisson been superb buys, both real quality. Torres brilliant to watch and decided to move on due to our lack of ability to really compete for honours at the time but I Guarantee he wouldn’t have moved on from this team!

31.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 21:57:31
Player has to be King Kenny by miles. Manager it has to be Klopp; I couldn’t believe we’d got such a character. “The ordinary one” - what a perfect start.

32.) 16 Mar 2019
16 Mar 2019 22:12:11
Istvan kosma, julien dicked and torben piechnik. But in a parallel universe definitely Ian rush returning home and more recently torres. Clough and Saunders were more hopeful signings than a great build up of anticipation and obviously both were disappointing overall.

33.) 17 Mar 2019

Alisson.

Shocked no-one mentioned Rush part 2.
Even though we’d been spoilt with sensational football in 87/ 88 Rush was such a great striker that I was gutted when he left but amazed by the return which came completely out of the blue 😎.

Since the question is "Which player have you been most excited about when we signed" and not, in retrospect, I would have to say Xabi Alonso. Benitez enthused so much about him, so despite having virtually no knowledge of him beforehand, he would have to be my choice.

With the benefit of hindsight, obviously King Kenny but also the underrated Ray Kennedy.

36.) 17 Mar 2019
17 Mar 2019 13:17:58
For me it was like one of our best signings, the day we heard that Stevie Gerrard wasn't going to Chelsea.
If he had went I felt it would have sent out the signal that the club was near collapse.
When you look back the club was in a real mess and to get to where we are now took some real hard work.

For me it was gabby batistuta who my dad's mate told me we'd signed, when he was right at the top of his game. It. He l we t me believe it for hours!

Torres
Vvd
Keita
Sturridge.

I didn't know much about suarez.

I saw mane play in his first friendly for us and I knew we had signed a game changer, a superstar in the making. Never watch Southampton so I didn't know how good he was.

Alisson also has to be worth a shout. Most expensive keeper in the world for a fortnight. Way, way better than kepa too! Also he has ears the work.
