Ed01, if you are around. What's your view on Jan Molby and Terry McDermott?
Molby I have read everywhere as the best ever passer the club has had. Not much heard about Terry. Was Molby signed to replace Terry?

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - they were nothing like the same player and Molby was not signed for 2 years after Terry Mac left.}

Thanks Ed01. What’s your views on both of them? Was it before your time?

{Ed001's Note - I only really vaguely remember McDermott, for scoring important goals. Molby I just remember spraying passes around with pinpoint precision. I have never seen anyone pass like him, only Alonso came close.}

Molby rarely strayed too far from the centre circle and im sure any video footage of him breaking into a sprint would be a rare collectors item. But what a passer of the ball.

{Ed025's Note - one of my all time favourite,s there virgil, not the fittest guy on the planet (like myself) but when you have skill and you can read a game like jan you dont need to be mate..

Someone said below I don’t rate midfielders Ed025, Here is someone I would even play today. Jon Molby could pass the ball through a needle. What a player! Him and Souness. Best ever!

{Ed025's Note - any team would have them 2 j a n..

Paul McGrath is another one of those players Ed025. Couldn't train because of his bad knees but come match day was always in the right place because his reading of the game was second to none.
I genuinely believe you can not teach that, you either have it or you haven't.

{Ed025's Note - ledley king was the same verdo, naturally fit guys who never needed to run around much because they had a brain mate..

Molby scored one of the best ever goals against manutd. Worth looking on you tube if it's in there. I only ever saw it on an old VHS copy of the game. He could take an awesome few kick too. One in the Cup against I think Ipswich and also he scored an absolute beauty kop end against Norwich I think. Superb technique but coming from ajax I guess it was expected. He did have his negative side, like a spell inside for drink driving I believe but what a player.

{Ed025's Note - all genius,s have flaws OYB....just look at einstein, and me with my southern comfort addiction.. :)

As i read this two goals for each player spring to mind.

Mcdermott against spurs not sure of the year) and molby against united. (the rare footage game that wasnt televised) .

Molby's passing was out of this world.

Molby took a decent penalty too. Hardly any run up, passed it in the net every time 😄.

If you can imagine James Corden’s big brother with the passing range of Xabi Alonso and the shooting power of Steven Gerrard, that was Jan Molby. If you can imagine Gini Wijnaldum with the goal scoring prowess of Frank Lampard and Ed025’s refuelling habits, that was Terry McDermott.

{Ed025's Note - terry did like the odd sherbet WW, i tried to grow a moustache like him one time....but i ended up looking like the detective bluey.. :)

At the suggestion of my then girlfriend, I tried the full Scouse curly perm and moustache that was de riguer for the Liverpool team of the early 1980s. I looked like a poodle that had been mistreated then booted out in the rain. Took ages for the perm to grow out, too. The things we do for love, eh, Ed025. She gave me the boot soon after as well.

{Ed025's Note - love it mate..

On a more serious note, Terry McDermott scored the greatest goal I have seen at Anfield. It was the seventh goal in a 7-0 drubbing of Spurs in September 1978. It came from a Spurs corner at the Kop end and 6 touches later Terry was heading Stevie Heighway’s cross into the top corner of the Anfield Road end goal. Check it out on YouTube. Pure magic.

{Ed025's Note - i remember it well mate..

Molby replaced Souness and struggled early on; but he was young. I remember a slow start to the season for the team and Molby after Souness left.
He was still popular though and I remember fans getting excited when he did start which wasn't every game in that first season.

{Ed025's Note - he ended up with a scouse accent as well rigsby, which endeared him to the supporters..

Just as I was getting into footy born to the red side Jan Mo was spraying it around the field with no effort at all. Absolutely class player, how we could do with his passing range now. Starting to feel a little on the old side.

{Ed025's Note - he would cost about £200m nowadays janmo..

They would get that back over the bar in the players lounge in 2 years. Win win🍻.

{Ed025's Note - your right janmo, and it would only take 1 year if they get a cut from mcdonalds mate..

I remember a quote from Jan Molby about Liverpool in the '80's. He liked a drink, as we know, and he said it was great in the city at that time. He reckoned you go for a few on a 'quiet' Tuesday night and the pubs would still be packed because no one was working the day after!
