Great review as usual one point I'd really like to mention tho is in my opinion it was a terrible game by firmino one of if not his worse games for us, his first touch was abysmal and he lost and then regained it has to be said possession so many times! You only get credit for winning it back if you didn't give it away in the first place in my book. Also the lallana score really? 4.5? that's particularly harsh don't you think?

I know you have a long standing annoyance at his playing style but seriously 4.5 is like Phil Jones bad when he's gave away 5 penalties and got sent off all in one game. For me even if he was our worst player on the pitch it'd still be no lower than a 6.

Gini played really well, so happy with him these days, and the whole team played well. Lallana was the worst player in red (or least good) but I didn't think he had an awful game. 6.0 maybe for me. It was great to see salah flying at defenders again, the pass for mane's second was sublime.

Totally right about moreno, he can play really well for large parts of a game and then completely lose it. I dunno if your going to find a better lb who is willing not to play. Part of me thinks he will have his part to play in this campaign.

{Ed0333's Note - Lalana didn’t have a bad game? I think you may have to revise your opinion if you rewatch the match mate

Lallana gave away possession almost every time he got the ball. He slows down the play with too many touches. In this current team he is a liability not a help. Don't get me wrong he has class but not for our style. Shaq came on and the game quickened. It's how we need to play.

{Ed0333's Note - I agree totally fella, the quicker we get rid the better. I was at Anfield to watch the game and he was abysmal. I fail to see how he has a future at Liverpool.

i would rather give our youngsters a chance rather than lallana.

Good for lallana to get minutes. He looks short of a gallop. Once he gets some sharpness back he'll be a handy player to have in the squad.

Lallana was awful and i don’t think you can just put that down to lack if fitness. Its the same old story. All the technique in the world and yet absolutely no brain to apply it. I’m not sure why pundits constantly describe him as having ‘a good footballing brain’, whatever that means. Quite the opposite. He slows down every single attack and contributes nothing positive on the ball. Off the ball, his legs are shot and he gets tired after 60 minutes. The team has moved on and Lallana has no idea how to play in it. I honestly cannot remember the last time he played a through ball or took a man on. Is always 7 touches, followed by a Cruyff turn, followed by a sideways or backwards pass. No disrespect to the guy but he is not good enough for a top side anymore,

give the lad a chance had nearly a full year out. was that not his second start in the last 12 months. if that's the case let's get rid of ox to because he won't be up to full speed when he gets back, great support that.

Woolback, you write a whole essay disrespecting Lallana and in the end say no disrespect intended. He is a liverpool player, gives his all in every game, and is the most technically gifted English midfielder. Insulting him for having no brains is awful. When fully fit, he is one of the most effective pressers of the ball and makes excellent runs. Both of these attributes require intelligence and panics the opposition into making mistakes or leaving space for teammates to exploit. If you do wish to criticise him, try to keep it objective and non-personal. By all means criticise his playing style or inability to stay fit. But insulting your own player is appalling.

Lallana was very important to what Klopp was trying to implement in his early days at Liverpool so is probably less keen to throw him by the wayside until he is fully fit and is given a decent chance to show his worth. These guys work together every day, they build relationships and loyalties.

There is a reason why he starts against Cardiff and Huddersfield but won't against Arsenal, for example. I don’t necessarily think he’ll come good again, but he deserves a chance to prove he can because on his day, he’s a very technically and tactically sound player who got unlucky with injuries as he was making his mark on the team.

Support for Nun red in terms of Firmino being poor. His first touch was awful and offered very little in terms of genuine quality going forward. Shak created more danger in 20 minutes than Firmio did in 70 minutes. He has not got started in the league yet and is well behind last years form.

I can't support you on Lalana though, he should not be starting. Constantly slowing down the attacks.

Gini - well played again. He is having a much better season than I would have ever thought possible.

I didn't think Firmino was that bad, he did give the b a ll away but he is still a constant threat.

I don't want to get in a row about lallana, he wasn't great but he did have an effort on target and he was involved in some nice build up play. I think he takes more touches because he is the midfielder who is expected to create something rather than passing back to cbs or squaring it to other midfielders. I wouldn't write him off. I think he will play some good games for Liverpool this season and its something we should be hoping for because an in form lallana is an asset. Also Liverpool style this season is less gung hoe and more measured I think it can accommodate lallana.

hanif, i’m not entirely sure where you think i insulted Lallana personally, all i said was that i don’t exactly know what a ‘footballing brain’ constitutes (which is what he gets praise for) and that he doesn’t know how to play in a system that relys on fast transitions and moving the ball quickly, which you could argue is essentially any top side. Critiscising Lallana is not disrespect, maybe referring to him as ‘deadwood’ a ‘carthorse’ would be disrespectful, but i would never do that to a Liverpool player. I just said i don’t think he is very good.

Also, let us lend comparison to Henderson, a player who gets an entirely disproportionate and borderline disgraceful amount of criticism from some sections of the fanbase. On the one hand we have Henderson, the club captain, has been here since 2011 and had to fight tooth and nail to keep his place. Chose to stay at the club despite being told he was not wanted. Has had some magnificent campaigns eg 2013-14 when his suspension lost us the title, and yet is still not given credit for them. One of the best midfielders in the country and yet is criticised for not playing passes which aren’t on and also for not having an exotic name (eg Lallana) . Has played through the pain barrier and has carried injuries for months on end despite playing every single game. This is a player who warrants all the respect he can get yet receives very little in proportion. A true role model and icon of the modern LFC.

On the other hand we have Lallana. A player who cost similar to Henderson, but was given it all on a platter. That would be fine if he had paid it back with some fantastic seasons, except he hasn’t. 2015-16 was alright but mostly because he was the only player who was good enough technically and was very capable at running around like a headless chicken as was the requirement in the early days of Klopp. Apart from that he has never really repaid his worth. Although the injuries aren’t his fault, he is one of he few players who has not improved under Klopp in the long term. He is constantly having to be brought off after 60 minutes, and is also constantly blabbing his mouth in the media rather than just getting on with it. His only saving graces are that he has a nice touch, does a lot of pointless cruyff turns and has a nice spanish-sounding name. I have to wonder if Henderson’s and Lallana’s names were switched, would the level of criticism change?

I’m obviously not saying Lallana doesn’t deserve the basic level of respect that every liverpool player does (barring any Charles Itandje level screw ups) but he doesn’t have a lot of credit in the bank for me. I can’t give him the benefit of the doubt because 3 seasons after his signing there isn’t anything that suggests he can contribute to this squad, i would honestly rather have Jones or Woodburn take his place in the squad. A squad player who cannot last more than 60 minutes when fully fit isn’t much of a squad player at all. So like i say, i’m not disrespecting Lallana, but when i criticise a player, i will at least have good reason to do so.

A bit condescending to say we like lallana coz of his name. He has not put in a blistering performance for ages but has only really played about 5/ 6 competitive games in 18 months. His last good season (2015/ 16) which everyone, even his biggest detractors admit was a fine season was the last time he really had any sort of run of games.

I really like the youngster coming through, Curtis Jones and Woodburn but they're not on lallana's level tbh. Not yet.

I notice the team engaging the high press more with lallana in the team, I'm not saying he is liverpool's saviour but he has a part to play. He has been one of England's best players over the last five years and has played some fine games for Liverpool. The 2016 season was when we beat all the big boys but lost to Swansea ect. Lallana was instrumental in those victories.

Thanks for the review, some thoughts of my own from the match and this season in general:

Defending - finally, the players tracking back and RUN back when they lose the ball. for quite awhile, i felt like if the play passed our team, they just left it to the defenders or whoever was in the backline to deal with it and we gave away so many chances when half the opposition were charging into our box. but now, we concede so few chances that you almost feel gutted when we do concede a shot on target.

Alisson - i think Ed001 missed out on this. i believe it was midway through the 1st half, he was stretching himself while we were taking a throw in. that was probably how he kept awake - kept stretching or asked the CBs to play him in.

Shaqiri - his quick forward passes are really good and it helps the team to break the opposition lines.

Gini - i never saw him when he was younger but could see he had talent and good physical attributes while playing for us. just never quite exploding onto the scene bar a few games. seems like he has really upped his game.

Ref- how abysmal was he? Bennett could have gotten away with breaking Salah's legs and perhaps Salah would have been booked for simulation. his failure to give Murphy a yellow for his blatant dive was also quite shocking given how intolerable they are towards diving. just glad that the results was not affected by it.

{Ed001's Note - I did miss that about Alisson, explains how he avoided nodding off.}

Nun red, I think "terrible" is too strong of a word to assess Bobbie's perf., IMO. I agree that he was not at his best cos it felt like he had issues sorting out his feet when the ball was passed to him cos it looked like it was getting stuck to them like glue. He can definitely do better, for sure. Also, I don't believe anyone played terribly as Ed01 suggested cos even Moreno whose error caused the goal, played a very solid game overall. You also have to consider that Bobbie is a complete genius on the ball so sometimes, he sees something that others don't see and tries to make something happen and if others are not on the same page, it looks poor. That's football, really.

As for Lallana, the prob. is not the fact that he is not fit. The prob. is that he KEEPS doing the same nonsensical stuff that slows the team's movement down. The Cruyff turns are really starting to do my head in cos all it does is kill momentum. For some one with no pace, he should be doing more to keep the ball and the flow moving with one touch football instead of the constant turns that kill momentum. If people think he will stop doing these things when he gets fitter, they are living in Cloud Cookoo land. He will keep doing more of it. IMO, Lallana's time at LFC is coming to an end and we are only prolonging the inevitable, IMO.
