IF we buy Wirtz, i fancy a period of eurpean and domestic dominance from the reds for years to come.

One player won’t do that Vango. You’re in dreamland mate.

Wirtz looks a very good player but he can’t do it on his own.

@Robbo, spot on - we need to improve the overall squad. Wirtz would be a clear statement of intent, but, like you say, he can’t do it all himself and the squad is only as strong as the weakest link.

As well as the full backs and Wirtz, we need a striker, a CB and probably a powerful midfielder. But we rush imbalancing the squad. 6 in?

So if we have a squad of 22 world class players and 1 lemon who never plays, we have a squad of lemons.

That wasn’t what was being said @Davey. At some point - injury, suspensions AFCON, or any combination, etc - we would need to pick a weakened team which could cost us.

Say Wirtz is going to lead us to glory is just people getting carried away. He can’t, and shouldn’t be expected to win us titles and cups on his own. What if he gets injured, wants to run his contract down, doesn’t fit into the next managers plans, decides he wants out etc.

We need to address certain positions - and it looks initially (the window not being open yet) that we are planning to do that, which in the big picture is more important than making a marquee signing, although as a fan, it would be cool to bring him in.

Talk over here in Germany is that Bayern now fear Liverpool after being faily confident he would sign for them. It is said Wirtz was highly impressed with what Liverpool told him. Apparently he is meeting again this week with Bayern to hear their proposal. Decision expected within 10 days.

With you WDW. Magical thinking to think Wirtz will guarantee future success. Just like it's magical thinking to suggest that this is a calculated risk given that he, like Chiesa, is post-ACL (they did them 2 months apart in 2022).

I'm personally wetting myself thinking that he might become a Liverpool player but I'm also aware that I have to temper that. If he does come, though, he's going to be a great piece in the overall puzzle.

Maybe Vango is looking at other signings Liverpool may make as well as Wirtz, him being the icing on the cake.
WDW
He hasn't even signed yet and you a are already talking about him running down his contract and possibly not in the next managers plans. Maybe he is such a revelation that the current manager or his successor build the team around him.

Sorry @Gaga, it was meant as an example of what could happen, not as a statement of what is bound to happen.

To be fair there are many possible outcomes to any transfer. It would be nice to get this one over the line though. Some posters questioning whether we need another midfielder. But maybe Wirtz would allow Slot to tweak players positions as he did with Gravenberch.
