Uruguayan journalist, Sebas Giovanelli, has announced that the Nuñez deal to LFC is pretty much done. just the add-ons to finalise. There is general agreement between the clubs and he will be a red.

Anyone with a deeper knowledge of the game and coaching know if its likely that skills such as a good close control/ first touch and ball retention can be trained into a player or are they more innate types of skills.
Darwin's weak areas are these, and considering how important it is that we don't give the ball away, i was wondering how such a thing may play out.

In fairness all of our forwards had the lowest rate of ball retention last season in the squad. I think Mo was the highest at 80% and Jota at 75% with the others in between.

It’s all well and good holding the ball up and keeping possession but when we are in the final third that’s when we need our forwards to take a risk with a pass or shot.

He who dares and all that.

He's a big talent. Liverpool and Klopp have been excellent at sheltering players from their weaknesses while putting them in situations where their strengths flourish. I think flanking Nunez with Diaz for the foreseeable future and Mo for at least a year will produce a ton of scoring without compromising us in any way. This has the potential to be a transformative move.

Thought we wanted our forwards to lose the ball so we can take it back quickly and surprise attack at full speed ???????????.

The setup we thrived on a couple of years ago, with Firmino playing false 9 and Mane and Salah running in behind is unfortunately in the past. Diaz is a bit more of a traditional winger, Mane looks like he might be off, Firmino isn’t quite the same player he was, and even our midfield is set up differently, so I can completely see how a more traditional striker role makes sense for us, and Nunez is definitely one of those.

I hope we get him in, and with Diaz and Salah able to stretch the play, and with our fullbacks also putting in crosses, Nunez should get plenty of quality service.

Wanting forwards to have high ball retention is mind boggling. Seems many fans struggle with the basic concept of football. Totally get why the Eds don't even bother discussing finances. At least there are no let's sign Kovacic posts.

I agree with SGRed on the crossing point here. Our delivery from corners needs to be worked on though as we have quite a few players who can exploit those but I thought we were awful in this part of our play in the second half of last season - so many corners not going beyond the first man!

Can we please sign Kovacic????.

I believe Ed said that stuff like first touch, close control is actually developed in players formative years, aka academy years. You can improve those things while in your 20's but there are limits to how much those things can be improved in those years, Lukaku is a good example.

@DareToDream - you mean better than it was on Monday when the regular chorus was singing the usual songs ‘We would never pay that much’, ‘He is going to (somewhere else) ’, ‘If we couldn’t afford to buy (whoever), we can’t afford to buy him’.

“Smile”, they said, “things could get worse. So I smiled and they did.

We need a player who can score with one touch.

The objective of the sport is to score goals, not retain the ball.

Our main problem has been too much dithering in an around the box and too many chances missed inside it.
