Any truth in the Romero rumours? Makes total sense to me that we would be buying 2 CB's because not only are 2 of ours injury prone, but with 3 all coming back from serious injuries, to rush any of them would be playing with fire on a number of levels. I like the idea of an aggressive CB being brought in like the Turk we bid 50m for from Juve or Romero.

Seems we are shopping at the top end of the market if these rumours are true.
We'd likely get 10m for Nat and 8 for Davies now also, which all helps, but the main point is, we simply can't rush any of the other 3 back.

Who'd pay £8m for Davies? We only got 10 for Dejan.

No, no truth whatsoever.

I can’t imagine anyone would bid £50m for Demiral after his last outing for Turkey.

In any case, I can’t see why we’d go for Romero, we literally have 7 centre backs and there’s other more pressing matters to deal with now.

What Victor said, loads already on the books.

Also, you don't buy players to cover the first 2 months of the season, Nat Phillips can do that just keep him this season as well.

Precisely Sean. If we can’t get a pairing out of VVD, Matip, Gomez, Kounate, Phillips, Davies, Williams and even Kometio then questions need asking!

On top of the injuries, VVD is approaching the age of 'last big contract', and who knows what he desires, especially after his injury.

VVD has a good four or five years left at the top and there’s every reason to think he’s likely to fully recover from that injury. I think he’s likely to commit and the club realise he’s worth that last big contract.

10 million wouldn’t buy Nat Phillips with one leg btw. A proven young English center back. Imagine we tried to buy a 24 year old pl proven cb who’s English from Burnley or Leicester or Brighton. Think of the fees they have plucked out of thin air for those kinds of player. He’s a £20m cb at the very least and I wouldn’t want to sell him for a penny less unless he gets a dream move offered to him and he asks to leave for it.

And £40M for Ben White is a current example of what Jezza is saying, young English centre backs are priced very high. Nat Phillips wouldn't cost anywhere near as much as Ben White but it is an example of how expensive English players can be.

Ben White is a capped England international, with 160 appearances in English football, 39 come in the Prem and is first choice for his club at the age of 23.

Nat Philips is 5th choice centreback with 21 appearances in English football with only 1 of those coming outside this injury stricken season.

There’s a reason why there would be a descrepancy in their valuations.

In fairness, Phillips is clearly a better defender than Ben Gibson and I reckon he’s better than Michael Keane and at least as good as James Tarkowski so he’s got to be worth more than £10m as Gibson went for £16m and Keane was around £20m. So £20m is fair value for an English centre half who is clearly premier league quality.

{Ed077's Note - How long does his contract run for? That can alter the fee as well.}

Just throwing my tuppence worth into the conversation.
I really like Nate so here we go, none of those other players mentioned got thrown in at the deep end in a devastated defence slipping down the Prem table and ended up finishing 3rd in the Prem.
He's worth every penny of 20+mil to half of the teams in the EPL.

Take £10m and run, no one has money this summer so no hope of £20m fees for him. And after this season where he gets a couple of 88th minute substitute appearances a cupla times during the season we'll be doing well to get £4-5m next year.

Phillips, to my knowledge, has a year left on his contract. A player is only worth what a club is prepared to pay and sell for. I love Phillips attitude and desire, my only issue is he's got a taste for football and I fear he may want out. I wouldn't begrudge him a move and if I'm right about his contract 10m is fair. In his short time with us he's been a fabulous servant. I'll support whatever decision he makes.

Good point ed077, I think he’s got two more years from what I’ve read.
