I've often wondered why this isn't a skill all professional footballers possess? Surely if it's your job you practice until you hit the target 9/10?

Stoneage, that’s like saying they should all be able to use their weaker foot. Kind of seems they skip the basics (weaker foot, long shooting and DEFENDING) to mostly focus on fitness, passing, movement (and more) which is IMO ridiculous that they can’t do the basics considering the money they get paid xD

The Ox has got a cracking long shot on him sometimes, but his are more driven low with huge power than fly over the top of a whole team into the top corner, which is what we need for PTB teams.

I said his when Coutinho left, that is what we’d miss most, games like Swansea where pace makes no difference as the team sit so deep it’s that bit of magic from outside the box we need.

This "hitting the target" cliché is tedious and a product of the Andy Gray sky era. The first two yards distance travelled have far more bearing on whether long range shots are successful. Its about getting it past defenders legs or keepers range. That's why when you hear recent pros talking about shooting they talk of getting it between the legs or setting it outside the post.

Hitting he target is easy. They can hit the target easily. Having a meaningful effort eg a shot fly just wide or just over that the keeper was nowhere near is far better than a typical shot on target. To score from distance you have to hit it with conviction and you have to execute your technique. To hit a shot the keeper can’t save from distance requires all of this baring a keepers mistake. Shots on target another meaningless stat unless there’s context.

I read a stat somewhere about two weeks ago, Xhaka from Arsenal, had 37 shots from outside the box, only one goal, 3 guesses who he scored against .
