Hearing we may go for Barcola a lot in the last few days - any truth in it?

Time was I would say we wouldn't go for him on top of what we have already done but the way this window has went it wouldn't be completely unexpected to see Liverpool get him, Isak and Guehi in the coming weeks lol

On a side note, we have brought in a fair bit too:
- Kelleher: £18m
- Quansah: £35m
- Trent: £8.5m
- Phillips: £3.5m
- Diaz: £65m
- Morton: £15m
- Nunez: £46m

That's £191m - includes some add ons but a fair amount to offset against what has already been spent - some going this window.

More critically, other than Diaz and Nunez the rest of those sales were pure profit as they were academy graduates. So the £80m pure profit actually allows us to spend £400m this summer with the way the PSR rules work as the cost is spread over the length of contract up to 5 years. Doak and Elliott will also be pure profit if/ when they leave. We can easily spend over £500m in this window, but it does limit our spending in future windows unless we can continue to churn out academy graduates capable of fetching decent fees.

It’s Isak or no one. The club have spend considerable amount of time on this transfer. No chance they are taking a U Turn!

How would Elliot be pure profit…. we signed him from Fulham, he is not out of our academy.

We’ve almost taken a leaf out of Reals book for sh##housery.

We’ve shown our interest, then allowed the media storm, the player has played their part in forcing a move and then we went in with a low ball offer.

Should only be a matter of time before both clubs find the middle ground and find an agreeable price.

If we were to pull out of the deal and leave the player hanging it’s not a good look.

I have no doubts this deal will get done but it’s just a case of who blinks first.

Bill, I hope we aren't personally. He isn't good enuff to for us as he is not even at the same level as Gakpo, in my view. That being said, We still need a CB to come in so hopefully, that can be done.

As for Isak, I don't see us signing anyone at CF if we don't get him this season. In fact, not sure we will go for him next season should he not come this summer BUT of course, I could be wrong. We shall see.

Elliot classes as homegrown so that's what makes it pure profit.

{Ed001's Note - that is not how it works.}

Man of Todd, Elliott was signed 6 years ago for I think about £10m. His fee is paid off with the way PSR is calculated as that £10m would've been put on the books as £2m a year for the first 5 years. So for PSR purposes, he counts as pure profit.

Doak only cost £500k about 3 years ago so although technically not pure profit, the amount we still owe on him vs PSR is probably about £200k currently. So if we sell for say, £20m, you can pretty much consider it pure profit.

Within the PSR calculations we will have even made small profits on Diaz and Nunez as well. Because well over half of their fees will already of been amortised in the last 3 seasons they've been with us. I'm not sure how add-ons work within the PSR framework though and their original fees vary a lot (£37-50m for Diaz, £65-85m for Nunez) . So the Diaz and Nunez situations are a bit more confusing regarding PSR, and I'd purely be guessing the figures, but their sales will go on the books as profit, but it will be the fee we've received minus approximately 40% of what we originally paid for them.

In laymans terms, anybody who came through the academy or has been with the club for at least 5 years, can be considered as a pure profit sale towards the PSR calculations. Anybody who has been here less than 5 years is more complicated and will still have an annual amortisation cost assigned to them. Even if you paid the whole fee up front in reality.

PSR is calculated over 3 years rolling in England.

To follow up on MK's post (and a couple of others) :

1) Being HG has no impact on profit. Profit is the difference between the fee you receive and what the 'value' of a player is in your books at the time of sale. Academy players and/ or players bought really young for relatively low fees tend to have close to £0 'value' on the books.

2) Harvey's fee was decided by the Professional Football Compensation Committee and it was £1.5m up front plus up to £2.8m in bonuses. Even if all of his bonuses have been triggered, he's been at the club since 2019 - 6 seasons. He signed his first pro contract in 2020 and if we take his whole fee as £5m (for ease and on a straight line basis rather than worrying about when the addons kicked in) we would have amortised, say, a minimum of £2m of his £5m fee by the time he signed a contract extension in 2022. His current contract is from 2022 to 2027 and his 'value' coming in to the contract was at most £3m. So his current 'value' is around £1m or so (given he's more than halfway through his contract. Therefore, anything we sell him for will be (almost) all profit.

That's right, Harry, PSR is calculated over a rolling 3 years, but what we're discussing is how costs and revenues are calculated in each year around sales and purchases of players.

My guess is that Barcola does not want to leave his home town club yet.
