Hi eds,

Was just wondering if there was any true interest in Diego capel?
Thanks {Ed002's Note - Marseille, Swansea and Braga have shown an interest Diego Capel who will be available after what has been a pretty torid time this season. Liverpool enquired after his availability on loan. His agent has been instructed by Sporting to find him a new club with an asking price in the region of €6M. His agent has spoken with a number of clubs in England, including Spurs, Swansea, Liverpool, West Ham and Sunderland. Right now Marseille are looking at making another bid for Capel and there has been an enquiry from Arsenal. If Liverpool want to push ahead they will need to offer hard cash and not seek a loan.}

Hi eds
Just a question about firmino.
do you expect him to improve a lot or do you think he may take a very long time to adapt to the league? Or is this a case of Rodgers once again playing somebody in an ineffective position?

Just asking as I'm slightly worried because I haven't seen many encouraging signs.

Thanks

lfc4ever999

{Ed002's Note - He is a decent player. Try not to have too high an expectation of him - Liverpool paid well over the odds. Quite where he will be used going forward is a little unclear - as it is with Sturridge to some extent.}

1.) 14 Sep 2015 20:31:23
i think firmino may take a season to get used to the prem , let's give him a chance also he is not playing in his ideal position , its all down to BR its weird all these players who play so well before the come to our club play bad they lose all confidence and don't play in their proper positions , why can't BR just use a system where all the players will play in their proper position and then they can show how good they are , he is that arrogant that he thinks he knows best even when we play so bad he says we play well and blame everything else except himself instead , he escaped the sack by blaming his coaches , he can't blame them now , its all down to him including the players losing confidence or not playing to their potential like firmino so give the lad a chance he has shown in germany what he can do let's just wait till BR goes and then you will see the real firmino

{Ed001's Note - I don't think it is arrogance, I think it is ignorance. He simply doesn't watch them enough to know where they usually play. He simply is not working hard enough and spending enough time watching football.}

2.) 14 Sep 2015 20:42:58
Liverpool paying over the odds? Go away, haha.
And how are we supposed to know where Firmino will fit in when the manager obviously doesn't?

3.) 14 Sep 2015 23:22:20
Firminho is a offensive player and will not be any good if stuck in a defensive RM position. He is very clever in the way he moves in between the opposing defenders and midfield, has a nice touch on the ball and good short passing game, exellent in creating space for others and drawing defenders out of position. He can use both feet allthough he's left is not the best. Playing him out wide like he played against Manchester, is like playing Markovic on the RWB. Absolutely weird.

4.) 15 Sep 2015 05:30:17
It is down to thr way the team plays. Firmino doesn't know who to pass, when to pass, when to move into space etc. That will hopefully get better as he plays more. I however wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that he is underperforming because he is playing out wide. Firmino played a large amount of time as the left sided midfielder for Hoffenheim, and had no problem being effective. He is better when partnered with a forward, to play as a number 10, but he is definitely intelligent enough to play out wide and be effective. This is the same with Lallana.

Coutinho is the guy who needs to play more centrally as a 10 IMO, though I agree when he is absent, we can play Firmino there if required.

5.) 15 Sep 2015 19:10:59
Firmino is isn`t showing encouraging signs? I would like to have the OP tell us who in our team is showing encouraging signs at the moment because apart from Benteke and Couts frankly, I can`t find one?

Hi eds and reds,

I'm sure you are correct and everything, but I was just wondering something. How do you actually know Rodgers did not watch the academy game yesterday? Is the fact he didn't made public? I just am not sure how you know. Plus, surely he can watch a full match video on a computer? I'm not sure we can really judge him on that.

Thanks for your response in advance,
lfc4ever

lfc4ever999

{Ed001's Note - yes he can watch it via a video, but there is no substitute for getting to the game and giving those youngsters playing a lift. As for how I know, the same way I get other info, people involved tell you. It is a source of constant friction within the club, which is why Pepjin was promoted to act as the buffer between first team and academy.}

Thanks ed

{Ed001's Note - you are very welcome.}

Hi guys,

Few questions,

1) who do you think will be the most important Liverpool player upcoming season?

2) biggest surprise/most improved player?

3) best signing/most important signing?

lfc4ever999

1.) 05 Aug 2015 06:10:13
1. Coutinho

2. Gomez/Ibe

3. Benteke (Giving us goals)

2.) 05 Aug 2015 06:31:09
The answers for 1 and 3 are Benteke I think. It seems to me that our all season is dependent on how prolific scorer he can become. I have little confidence in our defensive abilities, not just because the back 4 but because I am not sure BR knows how to fix our problems in midfield in term of being more dominant and preventing our back 4 and GK to be too busy.

Also going forward I didn't get the impression that we sorted all our problems there in term of creativity, movement and clear understanding of the players what to do with or wihtout the ball when they go forward.

However, despite all these problems, last year we still had 2-3 good chances every match and in many cases there was just no one to take advantage as we were unbelivably wasteful. If Benteke will take his chances his impact on our season will be huge. If he can't, I can't see who will, so the negative impact will also be huge.

For biggest surprise I will go for Sturridge's fitness. You never know with these things but I have a gut feeling that with all the pressure on Benteke Sturridge will be actually fit most of the league which will open a very interesting competititon between him, Ings and Origi for the second striker and hopefully also lead to us playing two strikers mroe often than not.

3.) 05 Aug 2015 07:27:20
1. Mignolet. I don't think he's the most important member of the squad, but it's vital he plays well and carries his second half of last season form into this season and improves on it.

2. Ibe. All Liverpool fans know what he can do, but I think this season he will show the rest of the league how good he is.

3. Benteke. We were desperate for goals last season, hopefully Benteke hits the ground running.

4.) 05 Aug 2015 08:14:19
That's a very good call on Migs actually - it wouldn't have come into my mind to choose him but you're right.

If he has one or more of his wobbles it will really hurt us.

5.) 05 Aug 2015 08:15:07
1 Every player who wears the shirt are important. It's a team game. The squad is full of internationals so the answer must be 12th man. We need to get behind the club.
2 I think Lovren, Lalana and mignolet need to improve on last season so 1 of them 3.
3 Firmino will prove to be the best player we signed. We never scored enough last season. So it's important that all the attacking players we've signed score goals, which I am sure they will.

6.) 05 Aug 2015 08:22:16
@fanobip I thought that in terms of creativity but was shocked to find the other day on Sky Sports that last year we created more goalscoring opportunities than the previous season so think creativity is there and hopefully bent eke has a good season

7.) 05 Aug 2015 09:38:40
1.) Henderson (Setting an example for the rest to follow in terms of work ethic)

2.) Moreno (If he gains more of an edge to his end product, and keeps concentration for 90mins he could be outstanding )

3.) Firmino (Should provide us with goals & assists, just hope any slump in form doesn't coincide with Coutinho's)

8.) 05 Aug 2015 09:57:46
1) whoever Rogers decides on as a DM for the season

2) Ings for me - he's got movement that boy

3) Benteke for me

9.) 05 Aug 2015 09:59:39
fanobip

Sturridge fighting for 2nd striker with ings and origi how insulting.

Sturridge fit is our best striker and one of the best in the league.

10.) 05 Aug 2015 10:18:30
Lavers, I agree afit Sturridge would start before Ings and Origi. I don't think he will start before Benteke if Benteke have a good start and score goals, but in that case I hope we will play both.

11.) 05 Aug 2015 10:35:42
1. Lucas

2. Lucas Fitness

3. Gomez

12.) 05 Aug 2015 10:40:42
1) Lucas
As I've said many times if we lose Lucas to injury without bringing in adequate cover, our season could be over before it starts. It's all well and good having hundreds of attackers and hundreds of defenders, but when you only have one out and out central midfielder, you're treading thin ice. So Lucas, for me, will be the difference this season.

2) Gomez
I think Gomez will come in and surprise a few with his natural ability, and the experience he shows which is well beyond his years.

3) Benteke
He will be our best signing solely because of his goal scoring ability. I think Milner won't be too far behind.

Red Rum

13.) 05 Aug 2015 10:46:31
1 - Milner

2 - Ibe

3 - Milner

the game is won and lost in midfield , that's why i think BR has bought so many midfielders , but with the eperience Milner has he can go on to be our main player , he can set up the chances our other mids can't see and he is old and wise enough to see the dangers of teams attacking us , i think he will be a big player for us this season, we all know what we are going to get from him with his work rate and add his experience to that then its easy to see why he is going to be big for us this season , i agree with the others though benteke needs to have a good season for us and score the goals that went begging last season also i think he will get into the positions that our other players never got into last season to finish off the good moves we made , also let hope he does not get that much injured because with him and studge up front firing then i'm sure we will get lots of goals , on the defensive side let's hope BR can get a good solid pairing going at least it will help our GK with clyne and gomez all we need for it to be tight is a good pairing at the back , its great that the season is starting very soon i can't wait

14.) 05 Aug 2015 11:20:19
1. Henderson. If he starts dictating the game and goes up a level, he could be the difference between top 4 or not.

2. Lovren. Hopefully. I couldn't believe how bad he was last season. BR prefers him over Sakho, and we need this guy to step up.

3. Benteke. Goals wins you games, and with an incredibly difficult away fixture list in the first half, tactical prudence and counter-attacking football maybe a good way to go about the business. We would need Benteke to pull off some magic though, as he will not get the kind of service he will at home in the first half of the season away.

15.) 05 Aug 2015 11:26:27
Migs

Ibe

Benteke

16.) 05 Aug 2015 12:08:13
Henderson

Keeper

Milner

17.) 05 Aug 2015 12:33:07
Harry how can you say Lucas? You've spent all summer saying we need to replace him with Kovacic!

18.) 05 Aug 2015 12:48:42
Benteke

Henderson - Has to step out Gerrards shadow, will be interesting to see how he copes

And Benteke again

19.) 05 Aug 2015 13:45:57
Adam

Exactly Why I put positions ahead of Player names. I would have named Kovacic had Liverpool signed him. You do realize, BR desperately needed him much more than any other player.
The center of the midfield where your attack and defense starts/stops

20.) 05 Aug 2015 14:22:08
Personally I think attack starts with the goalkeeper with the ball in his hands, and defending begins with the strikers pressurising the opposition defense.

21.) 06 Aug 2015 15:35:05
1 coutinho
2 henderson/Gómez
3 Benteke

Hi eds,

Before you say anything I have read the posts as far as I can, and I understand that as much as I would've liked him (I'm very happy with benteke) we won't be getting him, but why before we had paid for benteke, would we have not been able to afford lacazette? I can understand he may not want to come to the club, but after a massive net spend recently, surely we would've had the funds to at least offer a respectable offer for lacazette? The manager/(whoever it was) said 35 mil would do.

I'm mainly asking as a friend of mine was sure we would be able to afford him and I couldn't persuade him otherwise so please could you as succinctly as possible clear this up?

Many Thanks, Josh

lfc4ever999

{Ed002's Note - I have explained this over and over - even the Lyon president explained.}

1.) 27 Jul 2015 19:25:55
What Ed is alluding to is that it is not just about the transfer fee.

Otherwise you could look to people like Toni Kroos who moved to Real Madrid for around £20m last year instead of someone like Adam Lallana for £25m (I'm sure there's dozens more examples).

At the end of the day, a player has got to want to move to a club, otherwise they won't agree.

Sad as it is for me to say, our club doesn't have the pull that it once did when we were winning everything in the 70s and 80s or even when we were doing so well in the CL under Rafa. At that time, on the strength of the manager (initially) and the team performances (thereafter) we were able to sign players like Alonso, Reina and Torres.

Now we are in the position of only having won a league cup in the 9 years. Our mega-stars have left (Torres, Alonso, Suarez and Gerrard are ones I'd class in that bracket, at least at some point in their careers with us), and we have a manager who is not an internationally recognised name (a la Mourinho or Van Gaal) so there's a little less chance of a player moving for the manager. Oh, and we've only qualified for the CL once in the last 6 years.

Lacazette is only going to move to a CL club with a respected manager. I can see either him or Benzema ending up at Arsenal in the next few weeks.

As I said, it's a crying shame, but just don't have the pull any more.

For relatively recent examples of similar situations, look at Man City having to pay £32m for Robinho when they'd just been bought and had Mark Hughes in 2008 - money talks and I reckon he became one of the highest earners in the league as he was joining a team with no recent history of success, but with big spending new owners.

Our owners (quite rightly) won't bankrupt the club for the sake of chasing a megastar who would want ridiculous wages to join a club that does not have a recent history of success, or a manager with a stellar reputation. Therefore, until we get re-established as a top-4 side and start rebuilding our pedigree by winning stuff, players like Lacazette just won't be interested.

2.) 27 Jul 2015 19:01:11
The president didn't exactly explain why we couldn't afford him and that is what I was asking for you to briefly explain

{Ed002's Note - The whole thing has been done to death.}

3.) 27 Jul 2015 19:37:50
Thank you very much zeddicus

4.) 27 Jul 2015 19:45:47
Alonso, Reina and Torres although good players really made their name as megastars at Liverpool. The same with Suarez. Here is a question for anyone. Can you name me the last big name player that we have signed from a top club equal or bigger than Liverpool for a sizeable fee?

5.) 27 Jul 2015 20:35:17
Irish Rover, how often do these big clubs like madrid Barca and Munich sell players they want to keep. Rarely at all. I can't even recall any selling a 'superstar' maybe except Kroos or di Maria.

6.) 27 Jul 2015 20:50:53
Good point Rover, although I would argue that Torres and Suarez in particular were already reasonably established on the European stage hence the relatively meaty fees 4-8 years ago when we bought them, both >£20m (albeit dwarfed by the international megastar - Andy Carroll, lol!)

Crikey, that's a good question tho, big name player, already established, hmmm. Maybe Litmanen, or Babbel (the original!)?

Paul Stewart (joke!)?
Didi Hamann?
Djibril Cisse?
Luis Garcia?
Fernando Morientes? (albeit he didn't really work out!)
I would include Torres from Atl Madrid

That's about all I can think of of players signed from big European leaders.

Probably Garcia and Torres are the only ones that were really in their prime.

7.) 27 Jul 2015 21:29:44
Top club equal or bigger than LFC? Aquilani from Roma? Morientes and Luis Garcia both from RM in 2003/2004? Torres from Atletico? Babel, Suarez from Ajax. Poulsen from Juventus? lol. And don't forget Borini from Roma, Sturridge from Chelsea, Sakho from PSG and Balotelli from AC Milan.

8.) 28 Jul 2015 00:00:53
Paul Ince?
Mascherano?
Torres
Suarez
Sakho

That is all.

We are Liverpool, we CREATE superstars!!

9.) 28 Jul 2015 00:28:23
I think Sakho is the only fair one there. Pricey for a CB, PSG are now a huge club with serious pull.

Morientes was too cheap for what you're asking, same with Babbel. Luis Garcia wasn't established enough I don't think to be classed a superstar. Ajax are not big enough.

Torres is the only other one I can see from the players mentioned above.

10.) 28 Jul 2015 02:08:20
People will probably disagree with me but i would say Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen last year for in and around 10m. i'm pretty sure bayern had a buy back clause in his leverkusen contract so obviously a lot was expected of him and i think we did well to get him

11.) 28 Jul 2015 03:23:37
I don't, Jowens.I am very confident that with the right management, he will be a beast of a player. Bayern don't put a buy back clause in your contract if you suck because they did that with Lahm. Kroos, Alaba and even Hummels. Also, I remember when Bayern won the CL two years ago, there was a certain player I saw in track suits with the name Can on the back. Yep, that would be our very own Emre Can who was part of the group who were registered in that team. Goes to show how highly they thought of him. It's a shame many of us here think he's crap because BR who bought him, has no idea what to do with him.

12.) 28 Jul 2015 08:55:16
last top quality superstar player we bought from a major European club?

Pains me to say it, but true top quality European established superstar bracket was when we re-signed Rushie!!

Really, that is right, that is how far back we have to go

13.) 28 Jul 2015 09:33:02
Would have to say Litmanen or Morientes.

14.) 28 Jul 2015 11:33:11
Complete aside but imo Jari Litmanen would've absolutely rocked in our side of 13/14 in the Coutinho role.

Sorry can you explain please?

lfc4ever999

{Ed002's Note - I have explained over and over again that there is interest in him from elsewhere (Bayern Munich) but nothing was planned to happen until the club are clear on where they stand with Guardiola (which will be by the end of November). The offers from four other sides and now Liverpool seeking talks will accelerate this to the point where there is a very good chance that an offer will be put to him by Bayern regardless. Klopp is also aware that he can wait with every chance of other jobs becoming available at the end of the season - although as I have explained the circumstances at one will probably not suit him. If Liverpool were to put a package (pay, staff etc.) to Klopp - and if that package is agreeable to him, and if he were to agree to work within any constraints imposed by the club, then I see no reason that he wouldn't take over at Liverpool. As I have also explained, I am not convinced he is necessarily the right person for the club.}
