I think it is fair to say that Rangers is in a bit of a mess at the moment and the Board, whilst stabilising the club, has made some mistakes and taken some gambles that have not paid off - the previous manager being an example. I think Rangers’ fans are split over the SG rumours although some (including myself) are warming to the idea.

David King made a statement before we were last hammered by Celtic that our new manager would effectively guarantee success which, whilst lofty, is no more than the fans expect. Consequently, there’s a fair amount of surprise that Gerrard appears to be front runner.

No one can dispute his stature as a player or his potential as a manager - but he has less managerial experience than Murty.

Many Rangers’ fans will recall the state the club was in when we signed Souness - also untried as a manager - although circumstances were very different then and he could attract a very high standard of player from England.

Gerrard would command instant respect, would be able to attract players that we cannot currently attract, would be given funds for players (although not sure where they would be coming from) and would undoubtedly ensure the season tickets get sold. (I suspect we are keen to get it announced early next week to deflect from Celtic’s probable league title winning victory over us on Sunday) . He would be an absolutely fabulous appointment from that perspective. We just don’t know if he could get us competing with Celtic - and if you are not number 1 in Glasgow - your credibility is shot. To say there is no pressure managing Rangers is incredibly naive. The pressure is enormous albeit very different pressure from managing some of the elite teams.

I don’t accept that Rangers are miles behind Celtic. When they beat us 2-3 at Ibrox, we played well and Celtic didn’t. When they beat us 4-0, they played well and we were abysmal- the worst performance I’ve seen against them in my lifetime. Rangers is a sleeping giant.

If, and I still say if, Rangers can attract SG to Ibrox and if he can stop Celtic’s dominance - he will be worshipped by one half of Glasgow. It’s a big gamble for both parties but if it pays off the results will be spectacular. If we can have Mo on loan for a season too that would be nice thanks.
