Re Sparky's latest mindbender, probably a very long shot. Ismaila fits loosely reading forwards, Sarr backwards? Origi (Belgium hint) going the opposite way?

Just don't see sarr with afcon.

2.) 09 Aug 2021 13:57:24

For a bit of banter amongst all the midfielder discussions. Which current players would make your world midfield three? I would go for De Bruyne, Barrella and Fabinho?

Zimwool

1.) 03 Sep 2022 11:10:19
Rodri, De bruyne, Modric.

2.) 03 Sep 2022 11:40:54
Fabinho for what reason, unfortunately atm no where near. Rodi well ahead for starters. KDB a certainty third place probably Silva but Modric works as well. Kante if he recovers to past form.

3.) 03 Sep 2022 11:44:58
Verrati debruyne kante.

4.) 03 Sep 2022 11:49:21
Rodri, De Bruyne, Thiago.

Fabinho on song yes but he’s been out of form for too long.

5.) 03 Sep 2022 12:15:54
Mark Kante can return to past form Fabinho can’t, the hypocrisy is ridiculous.

6.) 03 Sep 2022 12:25:47
Bernardo Silva - Kevin De Bruyne - Curtis Jones.

7.) 03 Sep 2022 12:27:34
Don't think anyone has suggested Fabinho can't return to past form to be honest.

8.) 03 Sep 2022 14:03:18
Keita, Fred and Barkley.

9.) 03 Sep 2022 14:54:16
Kante is injured. If they both get back on form Kante is well ahead. Waqas - only a very very red tinted supporter would put Fabs in a world midfield.

10.) 03 Sep 2022 17:56:31
Don't bite Mark, Fabs is nearer to the most overated CDM in thew world list than top 3 in the world. The OP must be on the wind up.

08 Jun 2022 06:35:00
With all the talk about defensive midfielders, injury issues aside what about converting Joe Gomez? Quick, tackles, good passing etc. Any thoughts?

Zimwool

1.) 08 Jun 2022 07:11:06
He played a few times in a holding midfield duo for England's u21 and was okay there but i don't think its a solution for senior club football. If any of the centre backs could it would be Matip who played holding midfield for Schalke.

2.) 08 Jun 2022 08:14:00
We are trying to compete against the most expensive squads ever created - I’m afraid fixes like this are not going to work. We need great players in their positions or we will drop down the table like a stone.

{Ed001's Note - you mean like Fabinho a right-back who is now possibly the best defensive midfielder in the world? Not those kind of fixes though right? Or Mane, the right winger who has played left wing and now centre forward as a fix? But they are not worth considering obviously, as it is not like Trent wasn't a midfielder in the youth teams that only played right-back because we didn't have one as a fix. But yes, let's not even consider those any more as they clearly never work!}

3.) 08 Jun 2022 08:39:46
I’d be happy trying Gomez there we’ve seen the strides he’s taken on the ball in RB in just a few games. He’s rapid and wouldn’t half press well too. Matip I wouldn’t play there even though he has in the past, he’s lankier than Fabinho, slower and doesn’t read the game as well.

4.) 08 Jun 2022 08:45:58
I wish he would go back to midfield Trent. I have dreams of him pinging passes with the inside and outside of the foot, making the runs hendo does and still whipping crosses while being able to still have a crack at goal. He's got everything and too good for right back imo, stick him in cm he's as good as or better than Dr bruyne at his age. Bruyne was still playing for Wolfsburg and regarded as a joke at the age Trent is.

{Ed001's Note - De Bruyne was never regarded as a joke.}

5.) 08 Jun 2022 09:06:44
Peterpiece, clearly you never saw KDB play in Germany. If you did, you would know he was nowhere near being a joke. Jokes don't get signed 57m at City after finishing as the assists king 2 seasons in a row in the Bundesliga. If you know any joke players that can do what KDB did at Wolfsburg then pls, contact Klopp and Michael Edwards cos pretty sure they can use your immense wisdom on the matter.

As for whether Gomez can play in midfield, I would not hold my breathe on that cos he lacks the fundamentals (positional and spacial awareness, anticipation etc. ) required to play there, IMO. If any CB should be moved to DM, it should be Matip as that was his position before he was moved into CB by Ralf Ragnick (yeah, that guy) at Schalke. IMO, he still has those traits when he is on the ball as his vision and passing ability esp. through the lines are brilliant.

6.) 08 Jun 2022 09:07:50
You get what I mean though, he was deemed a Chelsea failure as was Salah. Looking forward to the Scottish boy joining he looks class and with the young Irish right back and neco Williams there I might get my wish although maybe in 2/ 3 years once hendo is older and Ramsey is ready.

{Ed001's Note - no he wasn't. He wanted to leave to get regular football against the wishes of the manager at the time (iirc it was Mourinho). He was never deemed a failure.}

7.) 08 Jun 2022 09:15:09
I think the Def midfield spot in our team is so vital to how we play that trying to learn it completely from scratch is asking too much of any defender. We either buy a versatile cm who can play DM, or we mix it up if fab is out and play 2 deeper midfielders with one more forward thinking player. We have the players for that in Jones and Elliott, so could work.

We can't lose sight of the fact that, with just fab, we were still a point and a win away from the quadruple, so we're not in bad shape!

8.) 08 Jun 2022 09:40:55
Peteprice, the young Irish lad is Connor Bradley. He's actually been nominated by his peers for Premier League 2 player of the season 👏🏻 not bad going for a right back!

9.) 08 Jun 2022 10:37:37
We will need to sell Fab, Hendo and Thiago to accommodate our new midfield 3 of Gomez, Trent and Bobby for next season.

10.) 08 Jun 2022 12:02:32
I like Joe Gomez
But he might just be too injury prone
Each time he gets a good run, puts in performances then gets injured and is out for long
I feel for him.

11.) 08 Jun 2022 12:38:43
Hopefully Gomez is nursed back to good health as the club did with Matip.
Personally I like Gomez as a centre back / right back cover, top player for me that I hope we keep hold of.
Interesting thread yesterday on the midfield.
We said exactly the same last Summer about getting a versatile midfielder in and Klopp chose to go with what he had.
So I agree that he could do the same again, Carvalho notwithstanding.
Though my preference is to get someone in, as it was last year lol.

12.) 08 Jun 2022 13:57:12
JK23 🤣🤣 that’s a good one, but makes sense give the various suggestions on here hahaha

Failure and joke are two words never associated with KDB ever except for cynical rival fans with a poor memory

With Trent he scares me as a midfielder, especially in our system. I know he plays centrally sometimes, so it’s not a direct comparison. But when he has moved central he is far too passive for me and doesn’t emit the kind of energy and motivation you need from your midfielders. No doubt he has skills to play there, but guess we’d need to see him have a fair run starting in the 3 to know. Perhaps a midfield injury crisis next season will give him his chance :/.

13.) 08 Jun 2022 16:33:38
Trent ain't seeing the midfield anytime soon. No point rehashing stale suggestions that will never see the light of day no matter how much they are brought up. This whole "Trent in midfield" thingy is about 3 years old now. Let it go.

14.) 08 Jun 2022 17:58:13
TAA us too good for right back? Right back where he gets all those assists from?
I think we'll sign a midfielder.
I think we should get someone that could cover or replace Henderson to allow him to cover Fabinho.
Henderson could be better holding as his engine is not what it was.

15.) 08 Jun 2022 18:33:54
Trent needs to learn not to ball watch if he can sort that then he is the best right back in world football. I know a lot of you will say that is rubbish but look back over his playing time in red shirt and you will understand were I am coming from. A big example is this years champions league game he was ball watching and forgot his winger

As for Trent in midfield I would love Jürgen to play him there in all friendly's and make an assessment on him he has the tools to play in that position.

By the way I am not having a dig at Trent he is a top top player who will captain LFC in future.

Showing my age as I remember the glory days but can any of you posters out there remember a better feel good factor or buzz about the club than there is now.?

Zimwool

1.) 28 Apr 2022 16:42:51
We're in uncharted waters here, as far as being involved at the final stages of so many competitions, so I'm sure the buzz is huge and greater than it's ever been. Fellow posters will correct me if I'm wrong, my memories and knowledge of the 70's and 80's is not really up to date.

2.) 28 Apr 2022 20:12:55
Football has evolved ArAy mate but the 70s and 80s were just as big. with all the unemployment in major cities, football was the only joy for many. Trips to Wembley regular. shoot magazine with free posters. those were the days mate.
However I'm still that kid inside and love this club and enjoyed every single season. But klopp has made this club great again and the buzz is huge and to have every other teams fans gutted is amazing.

{Ed014's Note - I’m not gutted mate, love the guy, he’s a massive plus for football, the premier league and of course yourselves.

3.) 28 Apr 2022 20:21:11
And you know why Ed014? Because he's the "normal guy". 😉 (And you're right I must add. He is great for football. And in all fairness, so is Pep Guardiola. ) .

{Ed014's Note - 100% mate, it’s such a pleasure to have them both plying their trade in the Prem.

Klopp is an incredibly nice guy.

Lot of talk re who is the best current manager, best ever manager etc, way too many variables. Why not simplify the conjecture so that there is no dispute? Any manager who can take the bitters to any title is without doubt the greatest managerial legend ever, end of.
