Are Liverpool likely to make a move for Promes? Because Gini has come out and said he would love him to come to Liverpool and that he is sure promes knows how great lfc is. Seems like the club have asked him to have a chat with his mate.

Additionally, is he any good?

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - we are interested, but not at the price being quoted. I have never seen him play.}

1.) 02 Jan 2017 06:25:26
He is being priced at €45 mill by Spartak and I don't see us spending that sum on any player let alone Promes. There is a good chance the player might push for a transfer.

2.) 02 Jan 2017 09:39:58
You'd think Promes is a replacement for a player. At €45m he has to start and who is he going to get in the team ahead of?

3.) 02 Jan 2017 09:55:42
Never said he is a replacement for anyone. His club has slapped the price on his head and it doesn't guarantee anything. It is no secret the club is looking at wingers. Promes is one of the names.

4.) 02 Jan 2017 11:32:09
Price is nothing if he is a good player that can help LFC to win titles.
You criticezed the price about Mane now he is lFC key player.
It seemed like you want a cheap player who can not help team.
If Klopps think that the player will help the team win premier league title then buy the player.
We have been waiting for premier league title for 27 yrs now, don't out an excuse over rated price thing.

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool have a lot of debt and are restricted in respect of how much they can spend without brining in money from sales.}

5.) 02 Jan 2017 11:33:59
If Fifa is anything to go by (and I think we all agree it's the bible) he's a serious speed demon but I'd never heard of him before playing Fifa 17 im not even going to pretend I had. I don't know what to make of the links really.

6.) 02 Jan 2017 12:10:32
I have no grasp about economy at all, but how is it that clubs with 2-3 times the debts of LFC can buy players for 100-200 millions every year, and pay 2-3 times the wages to players. While LFC can't buy anything without selling their best players every year?

7.) 02 Jan 2017 20:15:31
Revenue (how much a club makes) is part of it. So for example say ManU had debt twice ours but their revenue is 3 times ours (these numbers are plucked out of my head), then not only can they more easily afford to pay the interest but banks will be more willing to loan them more money.

8.) 02 Jan 2017 21:36:17
Not as good as Ojo, NEXT!

9.) 03 Jan 2017 15:59:37
Although Ojo shows great Promes, I'd say Quincy is the currently the better player.

10.) 04 Jan 2017 20:13:40
Quincy Promes is an awesome player that more importantly would compliment our team. Ojo needs a few years to get to his level. he has pace power and quick feet decent passing range. wouldn't be a bad signing especially playing with the front line we have.

Ed did you do a match review? If you didn't I would love one!

Match review possible this weekend ed? Absolutely devastating result but it's always good to see where u thought the problems lay

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - I don't have time at the moment, flying in the morning tomorrow sorry.}

1.) 21 Jan 2017 16:55:24
Basically, as we all know, the team has deficiencies in defence. Also I feel if Coutinho had shot when he had a good chance, instead of trying to play ball back, he might have scored, but they won ball back an went up and scored, could have been 1-1 which might have meant the next few minutes played out differently.

We all know if Sakho wasnt a plonker, he and Matip would be the preferred centre backs, Klavan and Lovren are just too prone to a mistake or lack of concentration, plus I'm not sure the defensive system actually suits them so we need to look at the coaching side of it as well, we've been getting away with it because of the high intensity and high pressure, but when teams set up to absorb it, we know we struggle, and are prone to conceding set from peices and crosses.

Look at it this way, Swansea had three shots on target, scored 3 goals, that just sums up that just like the last 4/ 5 years we just ain't good enough at the back.

2.) 21 Jan 2017 17:18:47
Not up to Ed001 standards but I'll give you my thoughts where the problems lay in order of importance:

1. Klavan is not good enough. Clearly Matip should have started and Gomez should now be considered ahead of him too. He is simply too slow with his reactions to everything that doesn't move in a straight line.

2. Lallana is an excellent CM and an average winger. I don't care if Mane's out, Lallana is best serving to the team in CM and should play there. Playing him on the wing takes creativity out of midfield and pace out of the attack. Much like Firmino is best serve to the team up front and should play there. Let other squad members fight for Mane's position.

3. Squad is simply too thin. We don't deal well with injuries. Origi, Sturridge (lost faith he'll ever get back to what he was under klopp), Ojo or whoever else you can think of are several levels below Mane, Coutinho and Firmino. We really struggle without one of these particularly Mane. We badly need to add another pacy goalscorer to the squad. Preferably in Jan if we can manage to get the right player. We really need it.

4. Emre Can is severely out of form. He was terrible today. I'm not a hater. I love him and think he just needs to get his confidence back. I'd certainly take him out of the firing line for a little bit.

5. Clyne broke down more attacks than I can remember and failed to hold up defensively. Poor day at office. Not an immidiate concern but summer I would like to see a top class LB brought with Milner moving to RB. I think Milner would be more fluid in attack on his natural right. Seems a bit awkward on his left sometimes when getting forward.

6. Henderson had an unusual bad game. He has been superb this season but was oddly poor today. Kept missing tackles and some passing errors. Certainly one to forgive. It happens but unfortunately due to his position we need him 100% every game.

7. Lovren was poor today. Multiple faults for the first goal. Needs a good partner alongside him like Matip. Long term I see him as a decent squad player/ 3rd choice.

These were the problems I saw. There were also some positives and I don't want to be a negative ninny.

Firmino: He was unbelievable. That second goal was sensational. He is a different animal up front. Like I mentioned earlier, he has to play there all the time when fit. no matter who is out.

Mignolet: Are we getting a keeper here? Perhaps he could have saved goals 2 and 3 but let's face it, they would have been wonder saves and the issues really came beforehand in defence. His distribution since coming back into the side is getting so much better. I've been impressed. really hope it continues.

Coutinho: If only he had more than Firmino providing movement. His vision is sensational. And he's only just back. What an amazing player. We have to keep him at all costs this summer.

Wijnaldum: I've been impressed with Wijnaldum's defensive work since he came to Liverpool. It was a welcome suprise. He's assist today was top drawer and some impressive long range passing in the first half. I'd like to see him be more positive on the ball because he clearly has it in him. Its coming at a slow rate but with a few tweaks (mainly just be more positive in his ability) I see a top midfielder there. It might not be obvious at the moment but All the skills are there. Intelligence, pace, Stength, Passing, Tackling, even goal scoring (although its not happening for him yet. ) Have the feeling it will all click for him by end of this/ next season.

3.) 21 Jan 2017 17:33:12
The fact people STILL refuse to blame Lovren means we will be left behind. He has been WOEFUL all season even in his ''motm'' ( laughable) perofrmance vs united he was extremely poor defensively. calling him 3rd choice is a disaster. He is CONSTANTLY at fault for goals and breakdowns in communication, playinf srtikers onside and playing hospital passes and giving the ballaway, People have been quick to jump on klavan, but he was never meant to be anything but a fill in. Lovren has now had 3 seasons to be in and he's still aking several mistakes in each game that are costing us.

Klopps recent team choices have left a lot to be desired. Lallana is key to our midfield, Can and Gigi clearly struggle to play the same area and neglect the press unless it's clear it's occurring and occupy each others spaces. Lallana is usually the trigger and most players press when he does from the mdifield, it may be worth suggesting captaining him when Jord is out. or pushing the VC onto him, the team clearly look to him from the middle of the park.

I do wonder when people will begin to question recent results, we were told by MANY on here not to worry after Sunderland, Bournemouth, United, does that still hold true now after Swanasea? we keep edging closer to those 6 losses and 34 point markers we can't afford to pass.

4.) 21 Jan 2017 18:32:45
Hi Chileanred, Not sure exactly what your expectations of a third choice CB are but generally, CB is not a very rotational position.

If we talk about defensive competencies, I think Lovren rates fairly highly and he would be one of the best 3rd choice CBs in the league. He lacks top pace and has a some issues with concentration (possibly due to lack of competition) but he has been found to forge excellent partnerships when partnered with top class center back in Matip and with Sakho before those issues.

If we were to buy another top class CB to partner Matip as first choice. Any injuries, I'd be more than happy to have Lovren cover. Then We have Gomez battling too and he needs some chances. We will have some level of European competition next season so he'll be needed.

I'm with you we need to improve on Lovren for first choice but he's more than good enough for squad.

Klavan is the one who needs to be sold IMO because his defensive competency is just too low IMO.

5.) 21 Jan 2017 19:03:41
Chelsea isn't he yes played 4 at the back would have Terry and cahill, indent even rate cahill butches better than Lovren, spurs have winner, who is better, arsenal have mert who is better, even United's piss poor centre of halves have all looked better. At no point have I really watched Lovren and gone, "that's a centre back I can rely on, now don't get me wrong, I don't expect 3rd choices to be world beaters, but I don't expect them to make several horrific mistakes a game either which is what Lovren is doing. And that is undeniable

For me klavan doesn't even come close to making the mistakes Lovren does, yes he's slow, but his mind is more aware of what's going on around him. zlatan played on Lovren over klavan which tell you all you need to know for me.

6.) 21 Jan 2017 19:38:12
Disappointing today boys. Thought we looked sharper in attack than we have in a few games tbh but as usual let ourselves down defensively.

i am a bit gutted especially considering Swansea's recent form but i think we just got to support the boys, title challenge looks a little unrealistic so try our best to keep top four.

7.) 21 Jan 2017 20:28:08
I don't really think of it as a case of mistakes per se. All defenders make mistakes, even world class ones. No doubt, Lovrens concentration levels need to be addressed and I think they would be with the added competition.

Lovren's all round defensive game is better than Klavans. I believe Klavan has deficencies that opposing teams would target and over time he would become an more and more of a liability.

Just a note, I'm still saying Lovren comes out of the team. Just not the squad. He has a place for me.

8.) 21 Jan 2017 21:24:58
think we should give Swansea a lot of credit, they played really well, and could have scored even more, so instead of being so negative about our team, let's give Swansea some positive thoughts, they just came and went away with 3 points .

9.) 22 Jan 2017 13:48:40
They realy didn't play well though. They did what United did, sat wih 6men in the defense, and hoped to scored from long balls and set pieces which we let them. It wasn't any tactical ingenuity, it wasn't paying well. It's not like they sat up at night guessing who to target, what channels to run, movements to make. It was route 1 football

Eds,

Klopp has recently been quoted s saying that Liverpool has a 'special kid'but he wouldn't' name him. Have you got any idea as to who he may be alluding to in our academy / first team squad?

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - I believe he was referring to a youth lad, below U18 level, so it is best fans don't know, or the poor lad will have too much pressure on him.}

1.) 08 Jan 2017 11:07:07
Rhian Brewster, we got him from Chelsea a while back.

2.) 08 Jan 2017 11:46:53
I remember, he has to spend all his wages in 30 days yet own nothing, then he gets a massive contract. 🤑

3.) 08 Jan 2017 12:05:14
Wrong sport Ron, but Brewster is the special Kid Klopp was on about.

4.) 08 Jan 2017 16:47:21
Likely is Brazilian Allan

5.) 09 Jan 2017 00:36:07
Woodburn is a special player. Hopefully the lad fulfills the potential.

I thought Jack Dunn a great prospect but injuries have hindered him although he got a hatrick the other night.

Ed- have u completed the match review yet? I am looking forward to it!

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - That display totally summed up Liverpool this season - stunningly brilliant going forward, though wasteful, but still scoring for fun, but totally inept in defence and the architect of our own misfortune. First half was total dominance, except for one bad error, second half we looked nervous but still clearly the only side that offered any threat from our own play. It could, maybe even should, have been a 6 or 7 nil win, as Palace offered little in attack, they were relying on mistakes from Liverpool for every opportunity they got.

Pardew's whining about the referee was purely deflection from his own ineptitude as a manager, as he was given a tactical lesson by a much better manager. He should stop complaining about others and start looking at himself, as he was useless. While Klopp had a plan of action and got his players to carry it out on the pitch, as usual Pardew had no idea what to do, other than hope his players could come up with something to rescue his sorry arse from a hiding.

Karius - decent enough performance, until he got nervy in the second half, along with the rest of the team. Nothing he could do with either goal. The first he was racing out to the edge of the area, so kept his hands down, the second was just too good a header for him to stop. Clearly still needs confidence, which particularly showed when the team got jittery, as he also picked up those jitters with a few misplaced kicks. All in all, he really did not have enough to do to judge him.

Clyne - the usual from Clyne, decent but nothing special either in a bad way or good way. His timing of his runs is usually very good, but he lacks quality on the ball and his decision making is not the best. Never troubled defensively, but never really troubled them enough when he got forward.

Matip - at times he was excellent, especially his header for the goal, which he smashed straight through the keeper. He just needs a better partner at the back alongside him.

Lovren - looked like the Lovren that Brendan Rodgers managed, rather than the one Klopp has been working with. Horrendous errors on both goals, but a good header for his own. He is so inconsistent that it will be his downfall. Also needs to learn to attack defensive headers or ease the attacker under it, to stop them getting a clean run on the ball, like they did for their second. Instead he was caught waiting for the ball to come to him, a proper schollboy error.

Moreno - a really good game for him, he was a constant threat to their defence time after time, played some lovely football and got back to defend as well. His contribution was key in the attack. He needs to keep up that level now.

Lallana - a mixed game for him, as usual his workrate was fantastic, his touch first class and he created some great opportunities. Unfortunately, there were signs of the old, frustrating Lallana there as well, extra, unneeded touches and a Cruyff turn back into trouble when there were acres of space in front of him to attack or play someone else in. Still, he was involved in most of the play, so not a bad game overall.

Henderson - excellent. From defence splitting passes to defensive cover, Hendo was an essential part of that performance. It tells you a lot about just how good Coutinho was that Henderson was not going home with the MOM trophy. He is maturing into a top class player and a true captain.

Can - he was also really good yesterday, with some fantastic passing (and great vision to spot the pass) and some excellent runs, plus chasing back and getting involved in defending. However, I am not convinced he gels well with Lallana overall. While they play the role in different ways, they still perform the same role, rather than complimenting each other. Yesterday though, it worked really well.

Mane - his pace and ability terrified Palace yesterday, unfortunately he seemed to have his boots on the wrong feet and messed up a few really good chances with poor shooting. His presence prevented Palace from pushing up to play a higher line and compressing the play, giving us the space to create chances. Just a shame he was not able to finish off any of his chances.

Firmino - as usual excellent. The problem for Roberto is that he is so good it has become normal. He scored, created, chased, harried, defended and showed some beautiful bits of skill, all par for the course for him. The lad is a special talent and is making a huge difference to the team. What a player!

Coutinho - a truly sensational performance. He was everywhere, doing everything from powerhouse tackles to skipping past their players like they didn't exist. Fully deserved the man of the match, they tried everything they could to stop him, though, other than standing on him while he was on the floor, they couldn't get close enough to stop him.

Subs:
Wijnaldum - did ok, looked more suited to playing alongside Can than Lallana did. Never really had time to make a major impact though.
Origi - never had time to show anything.
Klavan - barely had time to get on the pitch, let alone affect the game.

1.) 30 Oct 2016 08:35:45
Actually there was a moment when they actually stood over him near the touchline.

2.) 30 Oct 2016 08:43:52
agreed mostly except that Clyne did contribute attack with pass to mane for a sure goal but mane fluff it.

3.) 30 Oct 2016 08:48:01
Agree with most but moreno, great going forward but he makes everyone nervous, lovern clearly didn't trust him and that contributed to his mistake pity about Sakho he would be perfect with matip.

No complaints though great to watch with the chances we are creating someone is going to get battered! .

4.) 30 Oct 2016 08:47:15
Great appraisal, Ed. I thoroughly agree with your assessment of Hendo and the often-maligned Moreno.
Firmino is rapidly turning into a world-class player. He is looking like a bargain buy this season in the same way Suarez did in his second year with us. He has bags of ability and skill; a real physical presence; unbelievable desire and workrate; a solid header and a great shot. Additionally (and for me most importantly) he is a team player and will pass rather than shoot when the situation demands it. Hugely impressive.

5.) 30 Oct 2016 09:13:20
Do you think we need a centre back better than lovren? And are we looking at someone?

{Ed001's Note - yes, and yes we are looking to upgrade now Sakho has burnt his bridges.}

6.) 30 Oct 2016 09:18:40
Great review, thanks ed1.

7.) 30 Oct 2016 08:59:41
I used to love picking up the Sunday papers and reading the reports and opinions while having a coffee at home. No longer at home and miss picking up the papers for this.
Really appreciate You taking the time and I so look forward to your match report and opinion each week.
B.

8.) 30 Oct 2016 09:46:27
If Firmino being THAT good is normal, then think again about just how good lil Phil was for us to be raving like we are about him!

9.) 30 Oct 2016 10:44:43
That cut back for the first goal by Moreno was just class and great composure. He would flourish with a right midfielder alongside Henderson, someone who could hold the position well. Milner provides practically nothing going forward while Moreno gives us width.

Marcus Alonso and Victor Mosses is so much benefiting with Matic and Kante in the middle.

10.) 30 Oct 2016 11:59:06
Lovren still has a mistake in him and tho he made up for it, the first goal was his fault and the second one is a combo of Moreno not closing down the cross and Lovren not attacking the cross while McCartthy attacked it and scored. We may need another CB if we can't improve Lovren, I'm afraid.

11.) 30 Oct 2016 09:50:05
You have any names to give us in regards to who the upgrade could be? Or is it too early?

{Ed001's Note - it is not looking like a January change, so it is too early to say.}

12.) 30 Oct 2016 10:18:49
Ed1, any idea when we'll look to upgrade? Also, do know who we're looking at (at cb)

{Ed001's Note - looks like it will be summer now mate.}

13.) 30 Oct 2016 15:28:23
Agree with the comments eds- but am I the only one who thought the cross for the 2nd could have been cut out? I hate this trend of full backs backing off with their hands behind their backs. Just get stuck in and prevent the cross coming in!

{Ed001's Note - yes, I think pretty much everyone thinks that was a mistake, but it seems to be the modern way.}

14.) 30 Oct 2016 09:09:02
Dare I say it but apart ftom 1 minute of "bumble bee man" defending, thought Moreno was excellent.

01 Oct 2016 20:22:58
Ed01-
Please could I have your opinion on the goalkeeping situation?
I thought karius looked very shaky today but I assume he will improve.
Who would you start next game?

Thanks.

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - it is far too early to judge Karius and he can at least kick the ball. Stick with the lad and assess in the summer.}

1.) 01 Oct 2016 20:37:07
People are judging karius v early. He's young he's just been given the chance to usurp liverpools number 1 for the last couple of years. This is massive for him and a lot of pressure on his shoulders I can imagine. Give him a break. Allready his distribution offers far more than migs one pass for clyne to storm onto down the wing in particular. Yeah he's not that commanding presence that we all want just yet but he's no worse than migs and is far superior in possession so give him some time guys.

2.) 01 Oct 2016 20:38:27
Stick with Karius he'll come good.

3.) 01 Oct 2016 20:49:36
just remember he has had 3 games, mignolet has had 3yrs and has not improved one bit, also if karius does not work out for us we have danny ward who is gaining valuable experience playing at Huddersfield for klopp's best mate, no matter how this all turns out, mignolet is not the answer.

4.) 02 Oct 2016 03:09:16
kingkenny7 I couldn't agree more.

Going back to Mignolet is sending us in the backwards direction, he's bad and isn't going to improve. Time has proved this.

Karius however will improve, still young, new to the club, its far too easy to point the finger. Give the lad a chance. he'll be our number one for along time I think.

5.) 02 Oct 2016 04:12:08
Ward is not the answer either. Karius looks a better prospect but our back 4 and keeper are still too exposed.

We lack a presence at DMF position to protect us defensively. Look at the difference Kante made at Leicester last season.

{Ed001's Note - Kante was not played as a defensive midfielder, one is not needed. I don't know why people have got this ludicrous notion in their head Kante is a defensive midfielder, even Conte has been dumb enough to believe it. He is not, was not and will not be a defensive midfielder. Using him that way has stifled him completely as his strengths require him to have freedom to get further forward and harry the opponents.}

6.) 02 Oct 2016 08:39:46
Give him time, though he did look rather hesistant at times yesterday.

7.) 03 Oct 2016 15:30:41
Spot on Ed with Kante. He and Drinkwater played in a midfield two that were interchangeable hence, he could be let loose and hunt for the ball everywhere in midfield. Conte indeed has made a huge blunder by playing him with a slow matic and that is ruining him. Imagine Kante in our midfield 3 with Hendo and Can/ Wiji/ Lallana/ Coutinho in a high press system. Now that would be awesome to see. May still happen, who knows?

Chelsea never had any rejects don't be ridiculous. Mourinho fell to pieces and Conte has managed to put the pieces back together. That team is always going to be in the title race if they have a manager who hasn't lost the dressing room

Realistically ed, will we buy a CB in january?

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - realistically? I am not sure that there is a 'realistic' answer. It is very possible we will, the club are not entirely happy with the centre back options and we are looking for a replacement for Sakho.}

Thoughts on karius' performance Ed?

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - too early to judge him, he has only just come back from a broken hand, which is clearly bothering him when he goes for crosses. He is scared to get in amongst them right now, which needs to be sorted quickly. As he gains confidence in the league, gets used to his team mates, and gets over the broken hand, he will improve. His kicking was good, he played a couple of pinpoint passes yesterday. He just needs time, De Gea was worse in his first season, he was dreadful and the fans were worried they had been sold a pup. It takes time for some to settle in and I think Karius is one of those now, though in a huge part that is down to the injury, as that has effected him. Overall he was ok though.}

Who do you rate as the best 3 right backs in the league Ed?

TheKloppelganger

{Ed001's Note - erm Bellerin, Coleman on his day and probably the lad who replaced Clyne at Saints, whose name escapes me right now. Oh shoot I forgot about Johnson! How could I forget him? ;-)
