Eds
Both our keepers are clearly not currently good enough.
Once Leicester's flirtation with the CL is over is there even a slim chance we can persuade Schmeichel to come in as no 1.

Supermane

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has no interest in him and Klopp has already secured the goalkeeper he wants. The club needs to make a decision about Danny Ward given I would expect Mignolet to move on in the summer. I said before Begovic was an obvious choice and available.}

1.) 04 Dec 2016 22:03:30
Just a suggestion if any of the EDDS are around, could the problem be JOHN ACHTERBERG, we get a new manager who buys a new keeper who is as bad as the previous keeper, it doesn't add up. just a suggestion.

{Ed001's Note - I have said for a while he is not a good coach for us. Nice guy, really nice guy, but he is still learning his way as a coach and we should have the best.}

2.) 04 Dec 2016 22:55:19
Which one of the first 3 goals could Karius have realistically saved?

3.) 05 Dec 2016 00:08:09
I think he could've done better preventing the 3rd and 4th Ron . I don't like picking on players, but puzzled why we replaced Mingo by this keeper.

4.) 04 Dec 2016 23:48:14
Ed002 would begovic have joined us having once turned us down before? Also I question his ambition going to chelsea knowing he would be 2nd choice. Be nice to know your opinion.

Cheers Baz.

{Ed002's Note - Yes, of course.}

5.) 05 Dec 2016 00:37:30
The 3rd goal? It was a cross into a crowded penalty area, our defenders let their centre back control it and he smashed it into the corner on the turn. Karius had no chance!
What about the defence stopping the cross or even being in the right position to defend the cross. Ridiculous to blame Karius for the 3rd goal.

6.) 05 Dec 2016 02:33:44
De Gea made an almost identical mistake last week, and yet he hasn't suddenly become crap. Players are human and will make mistakes. Its just its more obvious when a GK makes one. The issue is how does he respond. Migs' biggest mistake is that he dwells on the errors and it appears to affect his judgement as a result. Karius needs to show he will learn from his mistakes but shrug them off too. Give him time and see how he goes. It took De Gea almost 2 years to show people what he has got (ManU fans were spewing about him for most of that time) and yet I reckon most here would jump at the chance to sign him.

7.) 05 Dec 2016 06:16:03
@Ron - the 2nd goal was poor from Karius - went under his body when he should really of been saving it. 4th was just a routine save that he made a complete hash of. He was directly at fault for those 2 goals - 2 goals a better keeper would probably not have conceded. It is still early days and he is a young keeper - we can only hope he improves. How likely that is with Achterberg as coach is open to debate.

8.) 05 Dec 2016 11:55:45
A very good friend of mine has told me Bercovic was offered a first class route to Liverpool but the man himself insited London is the life for him n his lifestyle is that of an unpaid or should that be unplayed superstar.
He even scoffs at the idea of him not plying his trade but still appearing on Match Of The Day Extra.
Not the greatest individual to have at your club.

9.) 05 Dec 2016 12:20:54
Did someone seriously suggest Kasper Schmeichel?
1) he's not better than either Mignolet or Karius.

2) Do you not think the constant brain farting from our defenders and midfielders when under pressure and consecutive mistakes are more to blame?

10.) 05 Dec 2016 15:18:30
Dennis
The Leicester keeper is much better than both of our keepers put together.

11.) 05 Dec 2016 16:45:38
Did anyone notice Fraiser Fosters error on the weekend. It happens to all goalkeepers. Just give karius a chance. Its his first season and he will only get better with time.

12.) 05 Dec 2016 16:56:31
Forster is a terrible goalkeeper who frequently makes mistakes - not the sort of GK you'd want to be compared to.

{Ed025's Note - i think forster is a good keeper seano...i can think of worse.. :)

13.) 05 Dec 2016 23:44:03
I think your all to quick to blame Karius! Yes he made a complete hash of the 4 th goal, but the rest I wouldn't of expected him to save. The second was low and I'm the corner I don't think your apreciating how hard it is to get down that quick, the third, matey on there team had time to control it and get a shot away! Poor defending in my opinion. I think our problem with conceding is our defensive structure! It's all well and good pressing high up the pitch but once they have possession in our half we should adapt a more organised defensive structure. If you watch the other top teams when defending even against the small teams they are well organised and drilled.

14.) 06 Dec 2016 01:41:07
Ron, gk are only good when they pull off saves that are unrealistic to save, if not they ate just plain avetage. Peter Schmichael, DDG been doing that and save their team min 6-10 pts a season and all title holders have these kinda keepers.

15.) 06 Dec 2016 10:26:30
Karius is more style than substance at the moment. Like a lot of modern day footballers, would rather look the part than be the part. That's why you find a million youngsters who can ping 40 yard balls, pull off fancy tricks and walk around with headphones, but they don't have the intangibles:- desire, heart, courage, determination, fight, and team ethics. As long as they look good, they're halfway there. When your goalkeeper is a model, you can sure as heck guarantee when the going gets tough, he'll be looking for the hair wax to make sure the camera get's his good side. Give me Ogrizovic any day of the week. In fact, I'd probably say Massimo Taibi was a better player.

16.) 07 Dec 2016 19:14:41
Pretty sure he does not go out there to perform badly, he had an off day it happens to us all. Like i have said we need a better coach than john and we may stand a chance of improving our keepers. Anybody can work 16 hr days but if they do not have the expertise it matters for nought.

Karius comes across as lacking in confidence rather than talent and john has everything to do with that. Also i suspect the prep in terms of scouting opponents just is not being done and that again lies at the door of john. Maybe they should send him to shadow a high performing a couple of days a week to see how it should be done, just a thought.

17.) 07 Dec 2016 23:18:00
Apparently Peter Schmeichel offered to pay his own fare and digs to get a trial with Liverpool when Souness was manager. Souness said no.

I also heard that Cantona was offered to us but Souness thought he was too much trouble.

Has anyone else heard this?

18.) 08 Dec 2016 07:24:14
Cantona had a trial with Sheff Wed but Howard Willinson thought he was too disruptive.

19.) 08 Dec 2016 13:09:07
Hi Ron.
Did Cantona not play for Wilkinson at Leeds utd?

Apparently Fergie rang Leeds enquiring about Nigel martyn and Wilkinson turned him down but Fergie said for the crack what about Cantona and Wilkinson let hum go For 1 Million I think.
Bargain of the decade I'd say.

20.) 08 Dec 2016 19:36:06
You're right mate, might have been Trevor Francis who was Wednesday manager. Anyway, I know he had a trial at Wednesday and was deemed too disruptive.

21.) 08 Dec 2016 22:32:36
I've always thought Cantona was over rated. Maybe it's just me. Wasn't he voted best ever player at utd? I wouldn't have him in their top ten.

22.) 09 Dec 2016 14:41:13
Cantona was signed for a bargain around the same time as Beckham, Scholes, the nevilles, Butt, and provided leadership to these young lads.
Add in Keane, Irwin, Giggs and Schmeichel etc.
And you have at current transfer values
A team worth maybe 500,000,000 assembled at a small ffraction of the value.
The rest as they say is history.

23.) 11 Dec 2016 14:32:14
Karious is young and would prefer him in goals with him learning from mistakes than migs who hast learnt in 3 years. However, if we were going to have a keep per who is young and accept there will be errors then we should have saved our 4-5 million and played Danny ward.

There are stories in today's press linking us to Kasper Schmeichel- I did ask if he would be availble after Leicester go out of CL a few weeks back.
Would he be an improvement on our goalkeeping situation? -most definitely, he would.

Supermane

1.) 20 Dec 2016 13:39:13
i am happy to give karius time. only want a keeper if mignolet is leaving and ward leaving on loan as well.

2.) 20 Dec 2016 14:19:54
I'm not sure Kasper is the answer. He's not a massive improvement on Migs IMO.

3.) 20 Dec 2016 14:20:08
That should only be addressed in the summer, unless like kaizer has said, one or two of the GK leave. In terms of schmeichel, I know he's a good young talented keeper with some decent experience but I'm not all that convinced, I think if we where going in for someone like that we should have done so before Karius, who is a similar type of gamble. If we are in need of a keeper in the summer, we should buy one that will definitely improve the position and there's no ifs and buts. There was ifs and buts with Karius.

4.) 20 Dec 2016 15:04:18
Kaspar Schmeichel is 30 years old. Loris Karius is 23. The only common thing between them is that they play the same position. Even if Mignolet leaves in the summer, I wouldn't replace him with a keeper who was two years older (even though keepers do have longer careers) . And would Schmeichel even accept to be a No.2? Bringing in Schmeichel is a complete non-starter. That's not where the future is.

5.) 20 Dec 2016 15:55:57
Completely agree with ra, and there was a decent article in (I think? ) the Daily Mail - can't lay my hands on it now.

Schmeichel is more of a keeper who releases the ball long to start a counter attack than play it to feet. He is however quite good with his feet and a good shot stopper. He has a few years left as he is only relatively young for a keeper at 30. He would cost, however, £20m plus.

The article concluded that if Schmeichel were available for a similar fee to Karius, at £5m, he may be worth it. But given the different in style and his cost, he isn't the right fit for Liverpool.

I would definitely agree.

I must admit, I still think of Schmeichel as a young keeper, but at 30, he really isn't.

I would rather replace Mignolet with a very experienced keeper when he leaves, or invest in Karius and Ward as our No1/ 2. We definitely do not need 2 No 1 keepers, GK just isn't that sort of position.

6.) 20 Dec 2016 16:37:32
To be faie kasper could have another 8-10 years at the top. Also he is a premier league winning goalkepper and actually helped his side to it unlike mignolet who should still have drop kicked demba ba haha.

7.) 20 Dec 2016 16:48:46
Schmeichel is not who we need. Listen, we all want a top class GK at LFC and so do I BUT they are all taken OR they were taken at a younger age, got improved by good coaching and good defences built around them and voila.

Spurs got Lloris at 23 as well and tho he didn`t usurp Freidel in his first season, we all knew he was the future. They coached him up, built a good defence in front of him and now look what he`s become.

Since, can`t get a Navas, DDG, Lloris and the like as they`re all taken, we simply have to do a Lloris as in, invest in Karius, coach him up good (Achteberg needs to go for obvious reasons), improve him and let`s see what he can do in 18 months. We need to create our own top notch GK like Utd and Spurs did with DDG and Lloris.

8.) 20 Dec 2016 17:00:45
I had no idea he was 30, wow. Still same thing applies.

9.) 20 Dec 2016 17:42:00
Completely agree, Hamilton. And if Danny Ward is willing to stay as our No 2, knowing that is his LT role, as Brad Jones did and others before him, then I am happy with that. As long as the GK coach is changed, or a more experienced one brought in. Would love to see Clemence back (as the coach, not a backup keeper! ), but he's probably got enough on his plate already, especially given his age.

Kman, I know what you mean, I could scarcely believe Kasper is 30! I think its because he was out of the limelight for a bit, and I'm of an age to remember when his dad broke through at United, so surely his son can't be 30?!?!?

{Ed002's Note - His father is well in to his 50s.}

10.) 20 Dec 2016 18:09:39
Ed002, I know, it just makes me feel old that I remember Peter breaking through and his sons now.

{Ed002's Note - We are all feeling old Z.}

11.) 20 Dec 2016 19:07:39
I've forgotten what it feels like to feel old 😩.

12.) 20 Dec 2016 20:18:59
It's a minor point, Hamilton, but Hugo Lloris was not developped by Spurs. By the time he joined them in 2012, he had already won considerable praise with Lyon and Champions League; had been playing for the French national team for almost 4 years; had been their keeper for the 2010 World Cup, and even their Captain. He was the keeper for the Lyon team that beat Liverpool in the 2009 CL. Your point on De Gea is valid though.

13.) 20 Dec 2016 21:04:04
Sorry, Ra. You are right. I totally missed that as I`m an avid Ligue 1 follower for over 20 years and having lived in France and saw Lloris come through the ranks at OGC Nice BUT he was not capt. at the 2010 WC, Evra (yes, that guy) was, just a tiny detail. My point was that he was not world class when he came to Spurs hence, was developed to actually be world class. That was my main point. That is what we need to do with Karius especially as Klopp sees him as the future. There is definitely a very good GK in him as his credentials in the Bundesliga cannot be ignored. Migs regardless of him being brought back, is NOT the answer and Klopp knows that.

14.) 20 Dec 2016 21:19:59
unless we're a signing an already established keeper then I am happy to stick with karius for the long term. we play as a unit and you may notice that our best defensive performances are the games where as a unit we limit the opposition's chances. and when we concede, typically those games we are all over the place (starting in the midfield. )

It was like going back to the first part of the season
No need to accommodate Can just to get him to sign s new contract
If he doesn't like the terms being offered he can move on.

It was Klopps fault due to his team selection - why are being so defensive of him? Managers are all human and sometimes they get it wrong.
Nobody is saying sack him.

I would much rather focus on the positives for our team than theirs. If anything I hope Carrick plays as I don't think he will be able to cope with our intensity and energy.

I must confess I was one of those who thought lallana may not live up to his potential but I am delighted at how he is performing this season.
