Hi ed001. What is your opinion on Clyne as a footballer, now that he's started playing for Palace again? I thought he was a good runner, with okay defensive ability, but he was awkward and uninspiring on the ball (his passing technique was closer to Mignolet than Trent) . Maybe I'm wrong, because a lot of Liverpool fans seem to really love him, and think he did a really good job for us. I saw a discussion recently about how he was our only good defender during Klopp's first couple of years at the club, and that Klopp 'absolutely loved him'. Sounds crazy to me.

Storm_Lord

{Ed001's Note - awful player and in no way did Klopp love him and was quick to offload him as soon as possible. He was athletic, but had the brains of a chicken and would just run into the centre of the pitch constantly. Defensively he was often missing in the centre as the opposition exploited the space he left. In a team like Palace, where Hodgson will give him rigid instructions and does not require him to actually think for himself, he will be ok.

He does have very good technique, it is just that he usually chose the wrong pass. His biggest problem was his lifestyle. He is a living cliche of the footballers from TV programs with their big flashy parties and jetting around the world to sleep with insta-'models'.}

Thanks ed. Glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't rate him! There are some really strange opinions knocking about these days. It makes football interesting, I suppose, but gushing over Clyne is one step too far in my book.

{Ed001's Note - I never understood why anyone rated him, he was a very average footballer who rose way above his level. Lacked the work ethic to make up for his lack of talent as well, which is the big problem. You usually have a few players in a team who are not as good as the rest, but they are the ones that you need for heart, desire and effort when things are not going well. The water carriers, as Cantona would say, are just as important as the showmen. Or piano carriers in Shankly's quote. But Clyne thought he was the star, rather than the carrier.}

2.) 30 Oct 2020 12:06:48
Never rated Clyne, never seemed to be where he was needed, positional was just wrong. Seemed far too lazy as well. In terms of working hard and playing better than expectations, Steve Finnan was the man back then.

{Ed025's Note - his personal life was a disaster bill and that spilled over to his football career mate, the guy had talent but imploded really..shame..

3.) 30 Oct 2020 12:16:02
Clyne was around when England didn’t have a great depth of right backs at the time. Fast forward to now and England seem to be loaded with lots of promising right backs.

4.) 30 Oct 2020 12:48:09
Another game of thrones reference. That you Harry barathion?

I don't think we'd be the same liverpool with Clyne in there. We wouldn't be known for super dangerous full backs. I didn't think he was awful, he had some decent games, but he would easily be the weak spot on this team.

I wish him luck tho.

Pretty sure Palace are our last game of the season. Why does it always seem to come down to the eagles?

5.) 30 Oct 2020 14:05:42
The funny thing about this is when he left certain people sung his praises. I said I was glad he left and got a load of abuse for it lol.

Now, I'm all for wishing a player the best of luck when they leave but acting like he was excellent for us is just delusional. I don't like that kind of nonsense, he was terrible and didn't deserve to be anywhere near our team.

6.) 30 Oct 2020 17:48:13
Markus Babbel was probably the best RB I’d seen in a Liverpool shirt until he was struck down by a terrible challenge. Steve Finnan was very good too, but Clyne. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Konchesky was a better signing😂.

7.) 30 Oct 2020 19:28:49
Should read terrible challenge🤦🏻‍♂️.

8.) 30 Oct 2020 19:37:35
He wasn’t struck down by a terrible challenge. He was struck down by a debilitating challenge.

9.) 30 Oct 2020 19:51:56
Why does it keep changing challenge to challenge🤷🏻‍♂️.

10.) 30 Oct 2020 19:52:36
Redmersey it’s changed it on you too😂.

11.) 30 Oct 2020 21:20:33
You never saw rob jones?

12.) 31 Oct 2020 04:51:19
Or even Steve Nicol.

13.) 31 Oct 2020 11:06:02
Rob Jones is a good shout to be fair.
I was only a kiddie when Steve Nicol played so never saw him play live. Great player but my point was players I’ve actually seen play.

Following Cech's registration, I was wondering whether there are any particular rules on who you can register in a PL squad. Theoretically, can you register anyone? Could Klopp have been named in the squad, for example, or Kenny Dalglish? What about a prize-winning fan, or a horse with three legs?

Disclaimer: this isn't some conspiracy theory, or a criticism of Chelsea, or anything like that. Just a quick little question that occurred to me.

Storm_Lord

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool made a last minute decision to remove VVD from the squad list already provided to the PL meaning that they could add an out of contract player if they decide to do it at some point - or they could add a non-contract player, as Chelsea have done. Before you all get carried away - Steven Caulker is not available.}

1.) 21 Oct 2020 11:44:55
Who of note could be added ed, garay, Schwaab does anyone stand out as a useful squad member till January.

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware that they are looking for anybody - they have sufficient cover and some very good youngsters as well. It will provide an option should they need it.}

2.) 21 Oct 2020 11:49:15
No chance we are signing Caulker. Its a centre half we need, not a striker.

3.) 21 Oct 2020 13:12:55
I'm quite keen to see Rhys Williams play more often. He had £80m Nicolas Pepe in his pocket last time out.

Matip, Gomez and Fabinho can hold fort. Williams or Phillips can provide additional cover. Worst case we have Berg and Koumetio in the u23's too.

A panic move for Ezequial Garay, Daniel Schwaab, Adrian Mariappa or Andre Pinto just seems like a waste of wages to me.

4.) 21 Oct 2020 13:14:35
Is Caulker still playing?

{Ed002's Note - In Turkey as I recall.}

5.) 21 Oct 2020 14:05:43
Correct Ed2 I think it's Alanyaspor.

{Ed002's Note - It rings a bell. Thanks.}

6.) 21 Oct 2020 14:57:29
MK, I would go with Rhys Williams also, he did play really well against Arsenal recently, and Pepe found it difficult playing against him . Rhys was part of the Liverpool 2019 youth FA cup winning side,
only 19 yrs old, but can read a game well and is quite mature in his game,
he signed a 5 year contract this year, and made his England U21 debut this month,
so he is highly rated, and would be my choice of giving some cover for VVD,

7.) 21 Oct 2020 15:30:48
Is Koumetio injured, does anyone know? He seemed to be climbing the pecking order during preseason, then Rhys Williams leapfrogged him.

I like the look of them both, honestly, although it’s tough to judge a CB at that age. I’m sure Virgil was all over the place in his teenage years.

8.) 21 Oct 2020 15:48:19
Storm Lord, Koumetio was injured for the League Cup games, yes. Not sure if he's fit now.

Ditto Nathaniel Phillips, but he wouldn't be able to play tonight anyway as he's not registered for the Champions League, due to our restricted squad size because we don't have enough club trained players.

9.) 21 Oct 2020 15:54:55
yes Billy the Kid did pick up an injury, but is ok now, he did play an U23 game I think, but he made a couple of mistakes, leading to goals,
but the French lad is only 17 yrs old, but very highly rated, and from what I have seen and heard, he will make it, right to the very top,
looking forward to following his progress .

10.) 21 Oct 2020 15:57:22
Caulker hahahaha Ed02. Is Torben Picnic around?

{Ed002's Note - Another non-contract option.}

11.) 21 Oct 2020 17:59:24
Thanks, Ed02. Seems he has overcome some of his mental health issues so happy to hear he is still playing.

{Ed002's Note - I have not thought about him for a while but will see if I can find someone to find out how he is doing.}

Hi eds. I saw something on Grujic’s social media about wishing he’d had Ollie Watkins in his fantasy football team. It got me wondering: are footballers allowed to take part in fantasy football? I know it’s not as serious as betting on results, but it also feels as though it could lead to some conflicts of interest.

Storm_Lord

{Ed002's Note - Yes they are - there are no conflicts of interest.}

1.) 08 Oct 2020 22:55:33
Thanks for the quick response. Would that still be the case if there was money involved in the fantasy football league, i. e. a sweepstake? Needing Watkins to score against your team on the final day, to get the points to win you £1000, isn’t too far away from placing a bet.

{Ed002's Note - No, it does not get considered under the gambling and gaming regulations.}

2.) 09 Oct 2020 08:17:52
Are the players allowed to play subutteo Ed's? I guess only if they haven't had a bet on it 🤪😂😂😂.

3.) 09 Oct 2020 11:32:39
Ha, Dom, subutteo isn’t quite the same thing. Fantasy football is directly affected by real life results. The NFL have rules on their players, to stop them from getting too heavily invested in fantasy football, so some sporting bodies are obviously concerned by it. I doubt the NFL have similar rules for the table top equivalent of American football!

4.) 09 Oct 2020 17:39:25
Ha! Was only kidding mate 😂.

13 Sep 2020 00:38:59
I don’t understand all the negativity. Some people would probably be happier if football matches were still on hold.

It was an exciting game to watch and we got the three points. That’s a perfect day for me. I don’t mind conceding three as long as we score four every time!

Also, it’s a controversial opinion (seemingly) but I was happy with Naby’s performance today. He won the ball in the final third on a couple of occasions, drove at the defence, played some neat passes. Can’t wait to see more of him this season.

Ed001 and fellow posters. Conor Coady has just been called up to the England squad. Congratulations to him.

Hypothetically, do you think he would fit into our current team? If he'd never left the club, he probably wouldn't have developed into the player he is today, but it's still an interesting one to think about. Of the various youngsters we've let go over the last decade, he's the one who seems to have made the most progress.

Storm_Lord

{Ed001's Note - not convinced no. He is not quite good enough defensively when under pressure, that is why he is so much better in a back 3 where he is the man who is covering. His passing range is excellent but still not as good as the likes of Fabinho or VVD, so I just don't see where he would fit.}

1.) 03 Sep 2020 13:40:43
Can’t deny, they’ve got a decent little team Wolves. Minus Doherty they seem to keep hold of their best players too. Nuno is working wonders.

2.) 03 Sep 2020 13:28:16
lol
I was going to ask ED001 about coady but he summed it up nicely
he does lack pace and sometimes for me get caught out of position a little too much as well.

{Ed001's Note - that is the problem with him, he was always better as a defensive midfielder when I watched him.}

3.) 03 Sep 2020 14:14:26
Has Doherty moved? Wow. Who got him?

{Ed001's Note - Spurs.}

4.) 03 Sep 2020 14:46:26
Thanks ed01. Great signing for them. Probably the 2nd best rb in the league last year. Surprised wolves sold him actually, they don't need money.

{Ed001's Note - he wanted the move.}

"A chance is still a chance even if they were offside. " RedScarface, does that mean a goal is still a goal even if they were offside?

Thanks for the reply. Backup goalkeeper must be one of the strangest roles in sport. It looks like Ward has played 13 games in 4 years. But if you're well paid, your family is settled and you enjoy the training sessions, maybe that's good enough for some people.

Markp — Henderson wasn't playing in that Villa game, if that's what you're trying to allude to. But he did play in most of the other games until the moment we fell from the top of the league. That collapse coincides, most precisely, with him moving back into central defence.

It's not the only reason for our form. I totally agree. But when you look at our results over the past couple of seasons too, they always drop when he's missing from centre mid.

I might be wrong, but I thought Pegleg was saying “I know there are lots of racists out there, so therefore I’m surprised only millwall fans have booed, and not more idiot fans at other clubs. “ Not “I think it’s right to boo, so therefore I’m surprised only millwall fans have booed. ”

I might be wrong, and putting words into Pegleg’s mouth, but maybe you’re all making the same point: that there are too many people out there who are inclined to boo, and that’s what makes the taking of the knee so important.
