VAR is fast becoming a hinderance than a help. It was a farce during the Villa game and it’s continued into the Everton game.

Son’s challenge was never a red and the leg break was completely accidental and a result of Gomez foot getting stuck in the ground. It was an awful injury and has completely influenced the refs decision. VAR should have stepped in and advised the ref that it was accidental and not a red card challenge. Don’t think Son would have continued after that mind. He was devastated.

Hoping that Gomez has a speedy recovery and is able to play again soon. The same happened to me in almost identical circumstances so know he’s got a long rehab but hopefully a fully successful one.

Couldn't agree more QSS. Everton can't afford to lose a good player also, terrible all around.

2.) 03 Nov 2019 23:07:22
It was another one of those challenges where the player can't possibly get to the ball and so plays the man to prevent a break. It was really unfortunate that it ended with such a horrendous injury and son is by no means a dirty player but tackles where there is no attempt to get to the ball will always carry a risk.

3.) 03 Nov 2019 23:58:04
Martin Atkinson involved yet again he is fast becoming a joke still no use of the pitch side monitor why?

4.) 04 Nov 2019 00:03:42
Just heard Gomes has a fractured and dislocated ankle. That’ll take some coming back from but I wish him a full and speedy recovery. He will be going through a lot over the coming months so hopefully his friends, family and all at the club can pull him through so he can continue with his career. Sad to see.

As for VAR it’s an absolute disgrace QSS. I never wanted it but I really didn’t think it was possible to cock it up as much as our officials have. They seem to have seen it as an opportunity to show that they don’t make mistakes so will try every which way they can to justify the on field decision. Now they’re even drawing angled lines from Bobby’s armpit to make him look offside when even Jeff Stelling can see he isn’t.

As for the Everton game today it was like they were trying to get every decision wrong. Then we have to accept these ridiculous statements they put out afterwards.
Tell me this. How is it that Man City got a winner against spurs ruled out for handball when Laporte was challenging for a header with his arm by his waste and the ball hit his arm and today Alli is challenging for a ball with his arm over his head and stops the ball getting to Richarlison with his hand yet because he’s in a challenge gets away with it? It defies logical reason!

Son shouldn’t have been sent off but Sanchez should. I found myself screaming ‘WHAT?! ’ at the TV I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Incompetence of the highest order.
At least I hope it’s just incompetence because after this weekend I’m starting to believe we have corrupt officials. Surely no one is as stupid as this?

5.) 04 Nov 2019 00:14:10
There was a challenge that Walcott did earlier in the game though Den when his foot rolled over the ball that was way more dangerous than Son’s. Not a red or intentional but could’ve been a leg breaker. If Son goes for an off the ball trip then Walcott has to go for his. We’ll end up with 5 a side if simply tripping someone is a red card.
The ref has made a decision on the outcome rather than the offence.
It just shows that we have a bunch of referees that just don’t understand the game.

6.) 04 Nov 2019 05:17:01
Yep Beckers, by that logic, if you take a swing at someone but miss, no problem as the outcome didn't exist. But if you make contact, you're gone.

7.) 04 Nov 2019 08:27:31
Must feel for both players. Sad scene indeed .

8.) 04 Nov 2019 13:37:58
Should be the act and not the outcome as far as I’m concerned. Both of kompany’s challenge and Choudhury’s challenges on Salah were more dangerous than Son’s, but due to good fortune he didn’t break anything. I’ve seen loads of high boots that haven’t resulted in a serious injury but online by luck.
That said, I do not like the deliberate fouls where the player is making absolutely no attempt to play the ball. When you think about it, why should allowed to deliberately trip someone running at full speed- it’s not part of the game it’s frankly an assault.

9.) 04 Nov 2019 14:41:27
I get that hopeful but who’s to say whether a player is going for the ball but mistimes it or is actually going for the man?
Are you suggesting we let the refs and VAR make that subjective call? I’m surprised most of them can get dressed in the morning without getting it wrong so asking them to actually get a judgment call correct is like asking Pogba to sprint. It simply can’t be done.

10.) 04 Nov 2019 16:39:02
Just watched the highlights from the Everton game and the ref initially runs over to Son with a yellow card in his hand. His decision therefore is clearly influenced by the extent of Gomes injury. Wish Gomes a speedy recovery and also feel for Son as well. Nice to see a player show genuine remorse for injuring a fellow professional.

11.) 04 Nov 2019 17:00:56
I've been having this argument with people - hasn't the outcome of the challenge always been part of a factor as long as with the tackle itself?

Personally, I think the ref is well within the rights to send Son off. As much as he may not have intended damage and was a freak injury, it was a cynical unnecessary challenge where he was never close to the ball and always just taking out the player.

Yeah, that might be a yellow normally but I see nothing wrong with taking the injury into account. Maybe it'll make the odd player think about putting in a dangerous cynical tackle in the future (although I doubt it) .

On the VAR point - if there was a table for handballs not called by VAR, Dele Alli would be topping that table. SMH.

12.) 04 Nov 2019 17:47:52
I think there’s a specific type of challenge when it’s really obvious that someone is just hacking someone down/ tripping them up. The old taking one for the team type of foul.
You’re absolutely right about the refs though.

As a fan who remembers the glory days of the 80’s, I too am wondering when we will lift a league title again. It has been a long and frustrating wait, with agonisingly close seasons. I can understand peoples frustrations and everyone is entitled to their opinions, but some of the constant negative dribble spat out by some so called fans on here is embarrassing.

Let’s put a little perspective on here. We are currently 1 point behind the media labelled “greatest premier league team ever”. We have a young and exciting team that will challenge for league titles year after year not just for this season. Our back 5 could be together for 10 more years and get better and better (imagine that! ) . Fabinho and Keita are young and exciting and will only get better. Need I say more about our front 3. Yes they haven’t been as dynamic or consistent as last season but my god they take some stopping when they’re on form. Finally I’d like to point out that despite a rocky start, our owners are learning from mistakes and are truly moving us forward both financially and commercially.

So fellow supporters all I would say is sit back and enjoy the ride because there are going to be plenty of ups and downs between now and the end of the season. Let’s get fully behind the team and drive them on until the end of the season. If 2005 has taught us anything, nothing is over until the final whistle of the final game!

{Ed025's Note - good post that mate..

1.) 04 Mar 2019 21:37:18
I still fancy us for the league, not me being bias either, I see City dropping more points than us in the remaining games.

2.) 04 Mar 2019 22:26:10
Que Salah Salah you sound exactly like a guy I was talking to at work this afternoon! I was all doom and gloom until he pointed this out. Good post mate.

3.) 04 Mar 2019 22:37:32
good post that, if we look at the bigger picture, and see that like he says, we are going to improve each and every season, and we are being backed by brilliant owners and a great manager and fantastic staff,
we are up grading the team and squad every summer,
I can only see winners with our team, and we need to give them our full support,
we just need to improve our away form, and score more goals .
YNWA .

4.) 04 Mar 2019 23:09:55
Mate what makes u think all of a sudden will challenge year after year for titles? Any evidence to back?

There's a reason we haven't won't any trophy I repeat any trophy for almost a decade and here we are talking of challenging league tittle year and year out!

Yes we have progressed but for that we have spent over 400M, yes I repeat 400M and our manager has over 3 and half years of building he's team compare to most of he's rivals, ask yourself if we don't win anything this season, are we over achieving of under achieving especially the amount of backing our manager has received from our owners in terms of resources and time!

Again if we don't win league tittle this season, will only be the team who despite leading by December yet failing to win the tittle not once but trice.

5.) 04 Mar 2019 23:47:07
honestly, Its not the results im upset with, its the performances when under pressure. If we can let go of the fear and perform well yet still lose the league I can accept that. But if we lose because we choked, then that's going to be 1000 x more annoying. There was an interview with salah saying that he can't enjoy himself in this title race. Our players just need to relax. We enjoyed ourselves against watford. the players were controlling the ball, taking on players, willing to take risks. That didn't exist at everton, we were scared to get tackled, passing it too early because of little pressure, heavy touches, overhit crosses. we were still the better side but not by much. Substitutes don't do anything because it doesn't fix what's wrong with the whole team. Just chill, perform well, just treat it like a game of football and not the end of the world.

6.) 05 Mar 2019 07:51:04
Kopitef, I bet if you ask any opposition supporter who they think will be challenging for the title next year, we will be 100% identified as one of those teams.

Why do I think we’ll challenge year after year? Well let me give my reasons why (and no I don’t have any physical evidence to back it up it’s just my personal opinion after seeing how Klopp has taken us forward) . We have THE BEST defence in the league. Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have two very good young full backs. VVD is one of the top 3 centre backs in the world. Gomes is still to come back into the side which will make it even stronger. What a scary thought that must be to every side. I bet teams will look at that and think how are we going to get past VVD and Gomes.

Then we go to midfield. Fabinho is now proving to be worth every penny we have paid for him. Calm and composed with a great passing range. Keita is slowly starting to click and wijnaldum has been excellent this year. Our front 3 is one of the best in the world period. A few additions here and there to increase the goal threat from midfield and look out everyone else. The owners have shown that they will back Klopp. Klopp has shown a willingness to adapt tactics. We are now extremely difficult to get even a result against (we have only lost 1 game this season) . Consistency is the key to challenging. We have now got that. (Please don’t come back at me with our draws as being inconsistent because Man City has nearly as many losses as we have draws so that argument can be levelled at them also - losing to palace and then losing to Leicester at the Etihad) .

People don’t have to agree with me. Maybe I’m an eternal optimist but you tell me with the quality and young age of our team, why can’t we challenge next year and the year after? I don’t see any reason why not.

7.) 05 Mar 2019 08:40:50
Spot on, OP. Wiseryan, I agree with you on the whole however I don't think it is possible to enjoy a title chase like this one for several reasons. One, When Salah or the players or management team are about the the town, I can guarantee you that LFC fans accost them all the time asking the same thing, "Pls, win this for us, man. It's been way too long". That is almost all they will hear. How is it possible to enjoy it? I mean, these players are human too and are sensitive to such things. It's all well and good saying we should just relax and play our game and that is 100% true. However, the reality is that they just can't with all that's going on outside of the pitch that they cannot control.

I fully agree that we are going to have to start taking more risks, like you said cos our defence is good enough to hold the fort while we release the hounds like we did vs Watford. We did not do that vs Everton cos they were really there to be thumped. we allowed all the outside noise to get to us and we became hesitant and Everton saw that and grew in the game as a result of it. We have succeeded in imposing our selves on oppos. all season long. Let's get back to that. Forget about City. Forget about everything else and just play football. Easier said thaan done BUT we have NO choice. We got to go for it now.

8.) 05 Mar 2019 08:43:27
Mate if we are that good and have got everything In place does that mean we are under achieving?

9.) 05 Mar 2019 08:45:59
kopitef, you don't really need to look that far.
nothing is in stone, but the club have been trending upwards since FSG came in and then Klopp has been in charge. could go on for ages, but probably all that will satisfy you is a title. so hopefully we can do it this season for you.

10.) 05 Mar 2019 09:40:31
What happens if Klopp leaves? Or some of our top players leave because maybe we are always the bridesmaid and never the bride? Winning trophies might go some way to hanging around, not the only thing mind you but winning nothing certainly won't help. We do have good players and a great manager but it could all so easily fall apart. We need to win trophies ASAP, not just be also rans, else or players could easily be cherry picked be the likes of Madrid, Barca, PSG, Juve and Bayern.

11.) 05 Mar 2019 15:47:50
What if Klopp stays and we win the title this year or the next, IR? What if's work both ways, man.

12.) 05 Mar 2019 16:45:16
Then this debate will become irrelevant. clearly!
