Reports that we have offered to pay the full 32.5 million for Benteke, not sure if there is a 'release clause' per se however I don't think Villa will turn that amount of money down.

Make a killing on 1 player and give it all to Villa . not the best business I've ever seen, I like Benteke but 32.5m is silly money.

Eurosport reporting Kono deal has hit a snag over personal terms. Apparently he is on over 100k a week at the moment and expects the Liverpool contract to be in excess of this. Not sure if true just passing this on.

Question for Ed2 if your about (understand if you don’t want to delve too far in to finances) . Understanding player amortisation is spread out over a players contract and is listed as an expense line item with the clubs P&L. Question is are the majority of transfer fees paid upfront when a player is purchased (thus the expense is a non cashflow item) or are these also spread over a number of years (meaning cash flow is impacted yearly as instalments are due) . Not specific to Liverpool however I have a long term finance background and am interested in how the club accounts work.

Peeps

{Ed002's Note - Any larger transfer fees are normally spread out over two or more payments but not the amortisation, which (for those clubs that take that approach), is typically spread over the length of the contract - and the residual amounts spread over any extention period when new contracts are signed. As such, cash flow is impacted each year by the amortisation.}

1.) 07 Sep 2020 10:38:35
Thank you for the response Ed, much appreciated. I had assumed player amortisation is treated much the same way as depreciation, with a clubs EBITDA (including add back of player amortisation) providing an accurate picture of cash available. This cash would then need to service and debt repayment, transfer instalments due from previous purchases, new player acquisitions and CAPEX. In Liverpool’s case it can be easily seen how a reduction in revenue due to C.V. and the lack of a large transfer fee received (ie Coutinho) has effected the ability to purchase without first selling. It seems the club is operating in a sustainable manner.

{Ed002's Note - Typically the cash available at anyone time is not clear. The repayments of debts/loans, transfer fees and CapEx (which will be lower going forward) are built in to the predictions and nothing to do with cash flow.}

Thanks again Ed2, appreciate the insight!

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

These concepts are dull (I know, I do it for a living) but very useful learning for anyone who doesn't understand how the cost of players and their wages, sign-on fees, etc are treated in the club's accounts!

If anyone wants to have a good read of where Liverpool’s finances currently start the Swiss ramble has done a great thread on twitter outlining where we truly stand vs the other clubs.

Hello Ed, another quick one on liverpools finance if that's okay. with it being a couple of seasons now since we spent big on players are we far off now from paying off all that money as I see from a previous awnser that clubs tend to spread out the cost of high transfer fees. And also the way you see the some owners like at city having other teams and having overall sponsorship do you think that will work as a model for the league. So if all the leagues from the championship down joined up with the Premier league and the money split between all leagues obviously the higher the league the bigger the share do you think that will be a way of saving the lower league teams from the risk of going out of business.
Thanks again.

{Ed002's Note - I am not 100% sure I know what you mean, but: (a) Liverpool have manageable costs facing them but the fans focus on transfers and not running the busienss - living close to the financial edge means the pandemic has hit hard. (b) I think you are talking about the City Football Group haveing quite a few sides - the concept is growing but it will not be something for Liverpool - unless I missed the point. (c) No - there are far to many professional sides in England already.}

Firstly thoughts and prayers with the poster Salah, hope to see you back posting soon buddy!

In relation to Salah the player, I read that he had to be told by one of coaches to go over to the away fans after the game yesterday as he was the only player not to do so. Always thought Mo to be genuinely nice and to always have time for the fans, could this be in relation to the recent phone whilst driving issue?

A breaking point will arrive. Particular when Salah figures out the fan love for him is conditional.

2.) 21 Aug 2018 12:55:04
Perhaps he was a little frustrated after not being as clinical as he normally is in front of goal. He’s only human after all and no doubts he wants to maintain the level he did last season. Once he starts banging them in again I no doubt we will see the huge smile return to his face.

3.) 21 Aug 2018 13:18:11
Can we stop persecuting people for their bad days? He wanted to go back to the dressing room immediately after a disappointing personal performance following a fairly irritating week. He didn't find a disabled child in the crowd and drop kick their companion dog. Like most people, he's a decent enough sort without being tested too much, has some mates who aren't as nice as him, has made some questionable life decisions over time and when pushed, has also done some really lovely things for people. You know, normal human stuff.

4.) 21 Aug 2018 22:17:20
Maybe he wants to join Madrid. I don't trust him or maybe his agent. I hate to say it and I hope I'm wrong. He has been playing football long enough to know to acknowledge the travelling fans. A hard thing to do if you are trying to leave and you know it will hurt the fans but don't care.

Madrid still haven't signed the big player we all thought they would when Ronaldo left.

The options must be Neymar hazard and salah.

I reckon if an offer came in and klopp said no, salah would get difficult. That is my instinct. I hope I'm wrong, he seems like a nice bloke but I don't really care, I'm not into football for the personalities, it's a beautiful game and salah is a wonderful player. Especially with expectations so high, if salah did want to leave it would be hard to face the anfield faithful.

Bid for Alex Texeira confirmed by the echo. Where is this money coming from?

Big clear out in the summer surely.

Great buy if we can make it happen.

1.) 21 Jan 2016 10:23:53
Is he any good? Seems a lot of money for a player who's never been capped for his country.

2.) 21 Jan 2016 10:43:46
If we can get someone like him, we definitely have capacity to sell either Benteke or Sturridge, plus possibly Milner, and don't forget we still have Balotelli, Aspas or even Markovic (not my favourite option) . We can also afford to sell Allen in the summer with Grujic coming in.

This one makes sense to me - pacy, able to finish, can play upfront our out wide, technically strong and should link up well with Coutinho and Firmino.

3.) 21 Jan 2016 11:22:25
A deal for Adam Lallana has been reached with Arsenal who felt adding a sixth number 10 to the team was ideal. £18 mil +addons.

4.) 21 Jan 2016 11:25:25
where selling Joe Pirlo Xavi Allen that's where its coming from lol.

5.) 21 Jan 2016 12:49:52
Aspas is no longer a liverpool player, i thought texeira waa a striker though.

6.) 21 Jan 2016 12:59:09
Isn't Aspas sold already?

7.) 21 Jan 2016 12:29:32
Brazilian team caps should not be a measure of success. They are the same people who select Kaka over coutinho and keep on continuing with players like fred jo and luiz.

my first time ever watching Liverpool in the flesh here in little old Adelaide, unbelievable experience!

A few notes on the game:

- Milner, great signing, full of energy and running in midfield, great touch and vision, talks and communicates with the younger players as well. Was slightly offside for his goal.

- Ibe, awesome pace and skill, very direct however tried to do too much a few times when an easy pass was on, will learn with experience.

- lallana, hendo and Milner were pressing like crazy, hendo urging Origi and Ibe to do the same.

- Migs was quite vocal throughout the whole game, urging the defence to push up constantly.

- Clyne looked very solid, great run and assist.

- Ings looked very composed for his finish, has some decent pace.

Overall an experience I will never forget, still can't believe I got to see a Liverpool game live in my own city. Can't wait to get to Anfield!

Ritters, grew up playing and watching football since the age of 5, always had a soft spot for the Reds for some unknown reason. However it wasn't until around 2000 when I was old enough to read about and understand the history and significance of the club, the tragedies, the triumphs, I've been hooked ever since.

Games are shown live over here anywhere between 11pm and 6am on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, I have not missed a live game in over 10 years. All my close friends are either mad Chelsea or Arsenal supporters, and we will often cut short a Saturday night out to get back home for live games.

Liverpool has a huge following in Aus, 53,008 people were at the game last night, the biggest Aussie Rules game in town the day before didn't get a crowd that big, was an amazing atmosphere, I could only imagine what Anfield is like for a big game!

4.) 21 Jul 2015 06:16:38
I'm in Mebourne and had a simular experience 2 years ago. Will never forget 95,000 singing YNWA. I am constantly sleep deprived during the season due to the times in Australia that games are played. When we play in Europe (on weekdays)I am always late to work cause games stat around 6am. Still really disappointed about last season, but hoping to move on this year. Fingers crossed!

@WDW2 remember this relates to financial year 22 (the picture may look different now) and is also before the $40mil debt repayment plus any amounts owing for player registrations which may have been spread over a number of years (again I am assuming this is how the accounts are prepared, standards may differ as compared to here in Australia)

Also apologies for my use of ‘$’ instead of ‘£’ - force of habit being an Aussie.

The interpretation of the annual accounts is not quite correct. The club owns $71.4mil to FSG (intercompan loan) and $88mil via the holding companies bank facility ($200mil available and matures in 2025).

The bank facility was amortised by $40mil in 2022 (the balance was $128mil in 2021), one would assume this will be cleared by the end of next season all things being equal (I am not sure if further funds are required to complete the stadium expansion)

Importantly, it seems the $71.4mil intercompany loan has not been paid down (i. e. the club has not yet paid this back) nor is any interest being charged on this facility. One can assume the club will pay back this facility once the interest bearing bank loans are extinguished.

The club actually generated $110mil in free cashflow in 2022 and $80mil when increase/ decrease of debtors and creditors is netted out, prior to player registration purchases and sales.

Barca could look to sell Coutinho to effectively fund the outstanding payment to the third party (if there is a residual debt) . Let’s assume $40mil is owed (not saying this figure is correct, could be much less or much more) and they are willing to sell him for this amount this represents a huge decrease in value for a player that cost close to $100mil not long ago.
