Ed 001,
Do you think we will possibly see TAA in midfield this season?

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed001's Note - nope.}

1.) 05 Jun 2021 17:35:24
I don’t understand the clamour for this. Even if he does have the attributes to play there, he is top 3 RBs in the world so the likelihood is we weaken ourselves by moving him. He doesn’t play mf when all of Fab, Thiago and Hendo are fit.

He’s fantastic where he is, leave him there.

2.) 05 Jun 2021 18:08:32
Play him in midfield and leave ourselves having to find the next best right back in the world (there isn’t one) for an insane amount of money (which we could just spend on a different position) all to fix a problem that doesn’t even exist.

Genius.

3.) 05 Jun 2021 18:24:32
Cheers.

4.) 05 Jun 2021 18:49:15
Our full backs are more important and creative than our midfielders, so it might weaken us.
Trent and Robbo are almost attacking midfielders anyway.

5.) 05 Jun 2021 18:56:15
Southgate doesn't even think he's a top 3 right back in England, the goat. 🤣.

6.) 05 Jun 2021 19:42:33
You’re right Irish. I should bow to Southgates superior knowledge. He loves RBs so much he took 4 of them to the euros 🤣.

7.) 06 Jun 2021 14:00:17
OP, the whole TAA in midfield thing has been done to death on here. He is a RB. The End.

Ed001, Sunday was the first time I watched Thiago play. I thought he was comparable to Xabi Alonso. Since you have a better eye for these sorts of things, would you agree? Cheers.

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed001's Note - no, not even similar. Xabi was possibly the best holding midfielder ever to play the game, with a fantastic ability to read the game and make a challenge. Thiago is not in the same league defensively and not the best in the challenge. On the ball Xabi was much better at the so-called quarterback pass from deep. Thiago is a fantastic player but he is much more like Iniesta or Xavi than Xabi, particularly Xavi but with the skill to beat a man like Iniesta. Thiago's skill is in moving the ball quickly around the pitch, without needing to take extra touches and in his constant movement. I wouldn't say Thiago is in the same league as Iniesta like, but he is that kind of player.}

1.) 23 Sep 2020 14:31:06
Exactly Ed and it's his speed of mind vision and passing that will be like the conductor to the orchestra of our front 3/ 4 with its constant moving, running and swapping positions that defenses won't be able to handle over 90 minutes.

2.) 23 Sep 2020 14:32:36
Thiago is far more progressive to Xabi. He is very quick in releasing the ball but isn't someone who would be seen in the 6-yard box. Thiago is excellent against the press. Xabi's job was different. Xabi had an excellent reading of the game.
Thiago is an actual 8 with first-class passing and movement. Not sure who is closest but both Modric and Xavi are the closest.

3.) 23 Sep 2020 14:56:28
Cheers Ed001, I'm well chuffed, regardless. I guess I got carried away with motd fever 😁.

4.) 23 Sep 2020 15:13:07
Xabi was so great that he made and already-great Steven Gerrard better. And I'll leave it at that.

5.) 23 Sep 2020 15:21:45
I can see where you're coming from OES and have to admit I thought the same watching Thiago too. It's been a long while since Xabi played for us though so it may have been sentiment more than anything!

6.) 23 Sep 2020 15:36:22
I thought he was excellent but still early days. Most notable for me though was how much whip, curve and dip he could put into just his regular passes, with perfect control.

7.) 23 Sep 2020 16:42:24
What’s your impressions on the mix for a midfield 3 with Thiago in there Ed001?
I got the feeling that he’s quite Fabinho-like pace wise and I’m not sure about having them both in a 3 or, put it this way, playing them together in certain situations?
I’d have Thiago with two more mobile midfielders, like Gini and Henderson.
That was my initial feeling anyway.

{Ed001's Note - it really depends on how it is being used and against who. I can see pretty much any 3 of them working in the right situation.}

8.) 23 Sep 2020 16:46:08
Xabi wasn’t that great for Liverpool he had his best years after he left. The season before he left he was brilliant though.

9.) 23 Sep 2020 16:49:34
The only player that ever reminded me of Xabi was me in my pomp to be honest.

10.) 23 Sep 2020 22:28:38
What markp08 said have to agree! He wasn’t a star for us good player not a great player that he went on to be!
Loved xavi Alonso those.

11.) 24 Sep 2020 05:31:31
Ed out of any current player today who would you say plays most similar in terms of how he moves and uses the ball. I know every team plays differently and midfielders never have the same options but I think verrati would be the closest in terms of the positions he takes up, how he wants to keep the ball moving quickly with simple 1 touch passes but what I love is how he will pick the moment and ping one forward to break between the lines or else open spaces by switching the play with long passes to wide when the time is right to shift defences, also the ability to turn or drop a shoulder to beat a man is effective in being unpredictable. Pirlo in his younger days also was very underrated in his ability to beat a player with tidy turns and touches.

{Ed001's Note - there isn't really anyone who plays like Alonso around. There are very few who play his way these days, the game has changed to be honest.

I love Verratti but he is not really like Xabi. Xabi's probably closest to Makalele, if you really had to pick someone. Again I wouldn't really say he was like him either.

Not sure how you think Pirlo was underrated, he played as an attacking mid in his younger days, precisely because of his ability to beat a man.}

12.) 24 Sep 2020 06:57:25
How about fabregas ed01? Do you think comparison can be made between thiago and fab?

{Ed001's Note - not unless Thiago stops bothering to work back and becomes slower than a tortoise in hibernation. Fabregas is one of the most overrated players of all time. He was good when he broke through at Arsenal, then it all went to his head and they had to put him in a place where his laziness defensively would be less of a liability. Thiago never stops. Fabregas wishes he was ever as good as Thiago. By the time he was Thiago's age, you needed a calendar to time a Fabregas run.}

13.) 24 Sep 2020 08:53:21
Thiago s best attribute is his vision. I think his vision is the best in the world right now.

I love how he can pick an unbelievable pass in a split second while also apologising to the other 2/ 3 options he saw in the same second.

I was even more impressed that he was able to pass as he always does in his first game without training. This shows that it is 100% vision driven and not having learned patterns in training and being able to execute. I think he will make us so much more unpredictable as a result and a better team.

I expect he will get much better defensively than he was Sunday once he s had a few weeks training however I don't see him reaching the energetic levels fab, hendo and wijnaldum. Combine thiago with a selection of 2 of these three midfielders and we have a world class midfield. I would not trust right now thiago being in the same midfield with ox/ kieta against the big boys. Against the bottom half perhaps.

14.) 26 Sep 2020 05:05:59
Lmao ed01. Okay, good. Lol @fabregas.

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about football.

OK as Reds fans we all want to win the EPL and the current starting ix is the best group to get it done until Matip is back. Henderson / Wijnaldum means to TAA and Robbo what Bobby means to Salah/ Mane.

1.) 11 Nov 2019 17:23:40
Def some truth in that OES!

19 Jun 2019 07:53:38
Morning fellow Reds, just looking at some stats and seeing that Mane outscored Salah in goals from open play. Well at least as far as penalties are concerned anyway. Three of Salah's goals came from the spot.

One Eyed Scotsman

1.) 19 Jun 2019 08:16:53
Irrelevant really. They both played bloody well last season.

2.) 19 Jun 2019 10:31:32
I don’t think it Is irrelevant actually, as we have seen from last season that the reliance on Salah has been dispersed and shared more equally with mane.

3.) 19 Jun 2019 11:13:37
I would go as far to say our reliance on the front 3 has been shared across the squad.

The sheer number assists that came from our wing backs was staggering. Throw in Virgil, Milner, Shaqiri, Origi, Sturridge and Gini who all got between 5-7 goals. It didn't even matter that Salah got about 20 less or that Bobby got 10 less. We still scored more in the league than the year before as a team. We scored 20 less in all comps but that was heavily down to the two 7-0 wins we picked up in an easy group which we did not have the luxury of this season.

Onwards and upwards I say 👍 if we add a proper midfield goalscorer like Fekir or Fernandes there could be demolitions next year.

4.) 19 Jun 2019 13:58:42
Salah had more assists, but Mane played slightly better overall. mainly because Mo had extra attention from defenders it was clear to see.

5.) 19 Jun 2019 14:25:08
manè could have had more had salah not have been so greedy in the box got to say I support salah as a lfc player but not a fan of him. his ego is an issue and the fans singing of an Egyptian king probably doesn't help that.

Not really bothered about transfers this summer. I think the 11 that started in the CL will probably start the season wit a bench something like Ox Keita Milner Gomez Origi Shaqiri Brewster Mignolet. Then there's the players coming in. Ed002 says not to rule out Fekir. So we'll see.
I 'll assess us according to my very limited managerial knowledge / awareness. No need to mention our front 3. They' re pretty much nailed on (if they stay) . Our fullbacks have had their best season ever. VVD and Allison are nailed on to start. I don't see anything to suggest that Fabinho won't be first choice in his position. Gomez is capable of winning back his place alongside VVD but Matip has been outstanding there. Everybody is going to say it's because of VVD but he's actually shown loads of ability especially aerially and in starting attacks. I think that's because he is well shielded by our midfield. Not just Fabinho but Wijnaldum and Henderson have defensive abilities that allow our defence to attack with fluidity and confidence. That's what Henderson and Wijnaldum contribute that all out attacking players lack. That's why I was never bothered about losing coutinho. As far as that attacking mid position is concerned then let's see whether or not we get Fekir. We just won our 6th CL with the players we've got. We hit 97 points and we were CL finalists the previous year so I'm not re bothered about what's going on behind the scenes tbh.

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has actively been looking at bringing in someone versatile for the forward positions. And I expect that they will if tehy can.}

1.) 09 Jun 2019 14:14:18
Carroll on a pay as you play deal Ed002? Kust noticed he'd been released by WH 😁.

2.) 09 Jun 2019 14:59:05
That was perfect assessment scotsman.

Just my opinion but our midfield is the main reason why we have such an attack minded back four. If we add an all out attacking midfielder then that would mean less protection for our back four. Any of JH, Fab or GW can drop back when need be. I think this is why we saw so little of Shaqiri last season. I couldn't see any significant flaws in his game so I guess it was down to tactics. We conceded the least amount of goals last season and were only behind City by about 5 goals.
That being said I would absolutely love us to sign Bruno Fernandes but I don't feel that desperation to sign players that I felt in seasons gone by.

Gomez will have his work cut out for him. Matip was immense last season. I don't think people realise how good he actually is.

I'd prefer Harry Wilson. Getting into this team won't be easy for him. Some times I think it's harder to break through when from the UK. Ed01 do you think Wilson we will ever see Wilson play for Klopp.

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed001's Note - he will have to do a lot more than score one free kick to deserve a chance.}

Ed 001, what about 3 centre backs with TAA and Robbo as Wing backs? Can we expect that?

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed001's Note - I doubt it, we struggle to keep one centre-back fit.}

Ed001 how about Alonso and Fabinho in the same team? Fab could the Masch role because like you said Alonso is the best ever in that role. I just love Fabinho though and would bend over backwards to accommodate him in m any team.

One Eyed Scotsman

{Ed001's Note - the pair of them have a beautiful range of passing and great reading of the game, I am sure they would be great as a pair.}
