Liverpool are hopeful that they will agree a new contract with Joe Gomez.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

1.) 09 Jun 2022 12:37:31
Good news. Too good to let go Joe.

2.) 09 Jun 2022 12:44:55
Good decision. With a run of games I'm sure he could be a first 11 player.

3.) 09 Jun 2022 13:14:17
But will he get a run of games? That's the question.

4.) 09 Jun 2022 13:40:56
Irish, he will eventually. Van Dijk and Matip are both the wrong side of 30, so there may well be injuries.

I know it's not football manager, but Gomez and Konate are the future partnership if Gomez can be patient.

5.) 09 Jun 2022 14:49:53
Matip at 30 is getting outrun by quick CF and TAA isn't any better tracking back when it matters. Gomez is quick and provides great cover and a safety net. However, he looks very rusty and needs run of games to get him up to speed with the game. If not, I'd rather sell him because he needs a run of games.

Hi Ed's hope you are well.

Do you know what the plan for Minamino is? Is he for sale? Will a loan be acceptable or is he set to stay at Liverpool this season?

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

{Ed002's Note - Takumi Minamino (AM) Sevilla are keen to take Minamino to replace Vazquez but would want a loan to buy. Southanpton were keen to keep him but again but it would be a loan to buy they are looking for. Liverpool are looking for sales not loans but may well price him out of a sale leaving Klopp to work with him as an existing player to save money.}

1.) 18 Aug 2021 14:28:35
If we sold origi and shaq I would be happy keeping mina, even if we got another player in. Jota mina and new attacker being the three to compete. Elliot could be used there but more often in the middle.

2.) 19 Aug 2021 07:42:02
Thanks Ed02.

Lovren- Zenit- £11mil.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

1.) 24 Jul 2020 12:31:29
Wow, that’s genius.

2.) 24 Jul 2020 15:35:15
Not as genius as the Southampton lad that got Liverpool to pay £20m for him.

07 Jul 2020 13:56:19
Hi ed01 and ed02

I remember a year or 2 ago City were interested in Joe Gomez. Has the interest disappeared? Quality defender and I hope his partnership with VVD continues for years to come.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

{Ed002's Note - I don't recall that. Bournemouth were interested at the same time he moved to Liverpool.}

30 Jun 2020 09:51:23
Hi ed01

Just interested to know what the plan for Sepp VDB is? Will he go out on loan? Let's say Lovren stays another year do you think Sepp could replace him as 4the choice cb in 2021?

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

{Ed001's Note - right now he is staying put, but if we sign a CB then it is likely he will make a loan move.}

1.) 30 Jun 2020 10:33:37
Just got a txt sayin Matip is out for the rest of the season not much left I know but him and lovern are made of glass!

2.) 30 Jun 2020 10:53:15
Which looks likely as Matip has been injured yet again and would miss the rest of the season. I am all for offloading both Lovren and Matip for anyone that could remain fit!

3.) 30 Jun 2020 12:22:40
Hi Ed’s- not sure if it will be directly linked to Liverpool but have seen rumours we may be interested in Malang Sarr. Seems to be a strange one as he is young and seems highly rated and out of contract at the end of season but no concrete links to anyone. Are we interested at all or is he heading elsewhere?

{Ed002's Note - There is plenty of interest in Sarr but not from Liverpool.}

4.) 30 Jun 2020 12:32:19
He’s not looked great when playing at the higher level. Loan definitely needed I think.

5.) 30 Jun 2020 14:11:53
Could we even get money for matip? He is very unreliable physically although when fit we have seen brilliant performances, it's a shame .

6.) 30 Jun 2020 17:45:23
Groan. Another Matip injury.

If Henderson and Fabinho both leave, I wonder if that would mean Morton stays.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

1.) 17 Jul 2023 16:48:09
I suppose a lot of that depends on whether Klopp thinks he's ready to step into the first team on a regular basis or not. There's less chance of Morton going out on loan if he's impressing out of Klopp in training.

2.) 17 Jul 2023 18:16:53
Not necessarily. It will be up to who and how many midfielders we bring in should both leave.

3.) 17 Jul 2023 18:33:44
I don’t think Morton (or Like Chambers) were in the squad that went to Germany although Scanlon - the young LB was.

4.) 17 Jul 2023 21:09:24
Stick my neck out and say morton won't make it here. What's all this talk of thuram again? Thought that ship had sailed. Lavia doesn't impress me at all. Young enough to improve but don't we need instant impact players to cover the departing fab and hendo. Hopefully we shift on sick note thiago also.

5.) 17 Jul 2023 22:24:20
Magico, we've got two homegrown players who have left (Ox and Milner), so I think that aspect of things is dictating what is going on once targets are identified with the right skill set. To me it explains the interest in Lavia and Phillips. I just don't see this club paying 50 million for a 19 year-old with limited experience, otherwise. Keep in mind we played the entire last year with 7 homegrowns, therefore a squad of 23 or 24 only.

13 Jul 2023 16:50:08
Assuming Henderson leaves and the same captaincy is maintained Van Dijk would be the new captain, Robertson vice captain followed by Trent and Allison.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

1.) 13 Jul 2023 17:05:13
I'd choose Ali over VVD due to form and personality.

2.) 13 Jul 2023 17:12:19
According to some Virgil has a worse attitude than Diouf and he slags off former Holland players.

Will be some toys out of the pram if he gets the captaincy.

3.) 13 Jul 2023 17:21:22
It’s all speculation JK, but with the players voting for it you’d think they’ll come up with the correct choice.

4.) 13 Jul 2023 18:48:07
Salah has taken the armband, could he be in with a shout?

5.) 13 Jul 2023 20:20:17
VVD should b kept well away from being the club captain, IMO.

03 Jul 2023 07:28:26
Hi ed001

Hope you are well.

Do you know what the plan for Tyler Morton is? Will he be assessed during pre-season to see if he will be used as midfield cover? Are the club thinking of another loan or a sale if a 3rd midfielder comes in?

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

{Ed001's Note - the plan was to assess him in pre-season. The two signings might have changed that, I don't know, but it does seem likely that he will be surplus now.}

1.) 03 Jul 2023 07:59:25
He will be loaned out I’d presume as a club I don’t think we will be too hasty in selling players same way we’ve done with carvalho .
If a 3rd is signed I’d be more inclined to sell one of fab or Thiago
But Thiago looks destined to leave on a free next year hopefully he can play 30 games for us this year.

2.) 03 Jul 2023 08:27:41
Hasnt carvalho gone on loan?

3.) 03 Jul 2023 08:33:18
Another name to wonder about is Adam Lewis (LB), his contract expired on Friday so, strictly, he is no longer a Liverpool player. He wasn't included on the list of released players but, unlike the others, his profile remains on the club website. There has been no mention of a new contract. Mystery.

4.) 03 Jul 2023 10:17:40
He's a very good player but they are such fine margins at the top. I could see him going on to become a solid lower-end Premier League player, which is still one hell of a career.

5.) 04 Jul 2023 05:54:59
Thanks for the response ed001.

{Ed001's Note - it is difficult to see a way even onto the bench for him now.}

6.) 04 Jul 2023 07:29:26
Agreed ed001. Especially considering that we currently have Henderson, Jones, Elliott, Thiago and Baj as the cover options in midfield.

07 Jun 2023 11:06:41
Hi ed001

Hope you are well. What have you made been Gakpo at Liverpool so far? Do you think he will have a great career at Liverpool?

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

{Ed001's Note - I really like him, he is not flashy and eye catching like Bobby but he is incredibly effective. His technique is exceptional, which is why he needs very few chances to score. He strikes the ball so cleanly that it goes where he wants it to, rather than just smashing it and hoping. I have no idea why he is not getting more attention, but I guess he is like Ali, does the job so well that he makes it look easy.

His attitude is excellent as well, works incredibly hard in training and often does extra work too. He could well be key for us in the long term.}

1.) 07 Jun 2023 11:41:39
He seems to hold the ball really well, and for me that was one of the key things mane did really well. He picks it up deep and moves us forward and rarely loses it with the ball at his feet. May not result in assist all the time, but so key for us moving up the pitch.

2.) 07 Jun 2023 11:56:29
I agree Ed01 - also seems to have high availability as well which l given our injury record is a good thing.

{Ed001's Note - good point, something I should have mentioned really. That is also the same with Mac Allister. If they can't be fit to play then being the best player in the world is useless.}

3.) 07 Jun 2023 12:07:56
Worthy successor to Firmino then, looks like. ??.

4.) 07 Jun 2023 12:24:20
Good info that Eds1 nice to know he puts in extra work. I did wonder why he is alway pick over nunez but I think I’ve found my answer.

{Ed001's Note - it is something he has been known for and one of the reasons we were so keen to get him. He has an exemplary attitude to the game.}

5.) 07 Jun 2023 12:44:01
His driving runs from the middle third are a joy to watch. He is very difficult to dispossess in full flow. He does lack that outright skill and blinding acceleration that a winger needs though, and I think his current role is the best for him. His shooting technique is also really good, so that's only going to help.

6.) 07 Jun 2023 12:52:28
His ability to be able to score from outside the box is a great weapon for us.

I might be wrong but I can only really remember his goal (against West Ham I think) as one we scored from open play from outside the box this season.

7.) 07 Jun 2023 12:57:47
Still think he plays better on the left and links up well with nunez. seem to be a understanding there. But he's done well up top too.
Where do prefer him ed.

{Ed001's Note - I honestly don't know, I think he can play either so well it makes him even more useful.}

8.) 07 Jun 2023 12:59:00
He's probably got the best first touch in our team. He looks ideal for our CF role. But where does that leave Nunez? He's a very expensive back striker or winger.

9.) 07 Jun 2023 13:46:43
I've been v impressed with gakpo after a shakey 1st few games. Seems to do everything well. As a team we seem to play better with him in the false 9 role.
I not sure how we get him and nunez into team long term, gakpo has to start if he continues to play the way he has been and don't think we bought nunez to play on wing long
term.

10.) 07 Jun 2023 13:51:08
Best ability is availability! With Gakpo, he could play LW but his ability to hold the ball and play in the hole is more beneficial at 9 to the team than Nunez more direct style at 9.

I think the usual attacking to will be Diaz-Gakpo-Mo.

11.) 07 Jun 2023 13:53:06
Very true ed001 and he is very unselfish. Been times he could have shot but sees players in better positions and will happily lay it on a plate for them.

{Ed001's Note - that is why he is such a good replacement for Firmino.}

12.) 07 Jun 2023 14:08:52
At Anfield Gakpo needs to play behind Nunez with Diaz and Salah out wide, we will be hard to beat at home.

13.) 07 Jun 2023 14:31:28
Could you see him as a centre midfielder ed?

{Ed001's Note - no, he is far too good a goalscorer to drop him back.}

14.) 07 Jun 2023 14:31:41
His first goal against Man Utd is probably the most obvious example of how high Gakpo’s technical level is. A powerful, unerring finish straight into the corner while the goalkeeper didn’t even move. His second was great as well, but the first was of a level you rarely see.

15.) 07 Jun 2023 14:37:22
Ed01, he also seems to be a really humble and respective guy as well. I watched the vid of the away support siging off Bobbie at St. Mary's and he and Gakpo were talking andGakpo kept nodding his head and bowing it in deference to Bobbie as if to show his complete thanks and respect for a true legend who clearly has helped him be the player we have come to love already. Top guy and wonderful player.

{Ed001's Note - yeah he fits the usual Klopp-type profile of a person. You can see why he had been so keen to sign him for a long time.}

16.) 07 Jun 2023 16:16:03
Ed01 hopefully, we stay true to the "No jerks allowed" policy when it comes to transfers cos of the way we never did our due diligence on Naby, by your account.

{Ed001's Note - exactly. Lesson learnt I hope.}

01 Jun 2023 21:53:08
When thinking back to the 2013/ 2014 season I know a lot of talk revolves around Gerrard's slip but what doesn't get mentioned is what a poor transfer window we had going into that season.

MoSalah Steak Gatsby

1.) 01 Jun 2023 22:43:31
I look at plenty of young players from that time, Aspas, Alberto, Gulacsi, Suso, Coates, Coady whove all gone on to do well and Rodgers didn't have a clue what to do with any of them. Borini and Assaidi done well at Sunderland and Stoke that season could have been decent squad options for us. Seeing as Ilori didn't play a single second wed have been better off letting Carra hang around. Reina was past it but we should have brought in better than Mignolet. We needed to spend in January though the Knonplyanka thing late on was a mess.

2.) 01 Jun 2023 22:52:55
Apart from Coutinho, did Brendan sign anyone half-decent? I think even Mad Graeme made better signings than him: Michael Thomas, Mark Wright and David James ultimately proved to be ok signings. Maybe even Ruddock on his best days was ok. Julian Dicks, Dean Saunders, Nigel Clough, Torben Piechnik etc - pure disasters. Can’t remember if Stig arrived under Souness or Evans? He was ok, before becoming awful - not a patch on early Staughton who Graeme admits he should not have sold. Slightly feel that it took the club almost 30 years to replace Jim Beglin at LB after his career ending injury.

3.) 01 Jun 2023 23:04:18
Yep, was a poor window. The only two half decent transfers (which still resulted in us conceding 50+ goals! ) were Sakho and Toure (on a free) .

It was the window that we bought in Mignolet as well, though!

4.) 01 Jun 2023 23:06:31
What doesn't get mentioned enough imo is that in the second half of the season, we'd start at a really high tempo, then fall off and be second best for the entire middle two thirds of the game, before going high tempo again near the end. We were getting scores like 5-3 against Stoke and 6-3 against Cardiff and 3-2 vs. Fulham and Norwich.

It was always unsustainable and it's a miracle that Crystanbul didn't happen sooner.

5.) 01 Jun 2023 23:41:44
Oh god, Ilori. There’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. Remember how everyone had convinced themselves he was the centre back we all needed, he was almost certainly a Beckenbauer clone, and couldn’t understand why he wasn’t ever played? Every week there’d be questions about him. Haven’t heard his name mentioned once since he left, and I can’t even remember when that was.

6.) 02 Jun 2023 00:43:38
I think the darkest era for me was the Hodgson one. Poulsen, Konchesky etc. paying good money to go and see them just took a huge toll. I remember watching a Europa League game thinking why am I here.

7.) 02 Jun 2023 02:39:11
Jones Red. you are not supposed to mention that at all. it never happened. Dalglish came back after a gap from Benitez. that's all!

Football died the day we played a European game at home and drew 0 0 with our players barely crossing the halfway line and having hardly a shot. think Poulson and spearing may have been the centre mids! Good grief.

8.) 02 Jun 2023 04:35:52
Amongst Rodgers better signings were: James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Joe Gomez. He also signed Adam Lallana Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi but can't recall any others that he signed that were an improvement to the squad. He also threw a lot of money at players like Markovic who he had no plan on how to use (you could argue that applied to firmino too) - so a bit of a mixed bag really.

9.) 02 Jun 2023 05:11:20
Nothing against Hodgson but watching Christian Poulsen wander around in our midfield was absolutely the low point of my time as an LFC fan.

10.) 02 Jun 2023 06:36:43
Jones Red. The difference is that Hodgson was the only Liverpool manager to have next to no money to spend. He didn’t have a pot to p##s in ?.

11.) 02 Jun 2023 06:51:20
The only signings Rodgers made that were good under him were Coutinho and Sturridge. Sakho, Can and Mignolet were average. Every other signing was dreadful.

Klopp came in and got the best out of Gomez, Firmino, Lallana, Origi and Milner.

12.) 02 Jun 2023 07:22:35
A better goalkeeper than mignolet and we would've won the league that year. Often think how many leagues we would've won threw the years with a gk of quality of Allison or even bit lesser quality.
Roy Evans would've won at least 1, Rodgers would've won 1.

13.) 02 Jun 2023 08:31:27
OP, Rodgers was incompetent and was especially incompetent when it came to transfers so us having a poor window did not prevent us from winning the title. It was again, BR's incompetence, arrogance and need for acclamation for his "tactical nous" as well as his innate inability to coach a defence to stop a nose bleed that cost us the title.

If we had a Klopp in charge of that team, we win the title and the SG slip is not a thing cos we would never have conceded 50 plus goals in that season nor try to outscore every oppo. to win a title cos that has always been a recipe for disaster on the day your forwards have a bad day or face a stubborn defence which is what happened vs Chelsea, a game we didn't even need to win yet BR managed to screw that up and lose it. 13/ 14 was all down to him, IMO.

14.) 02 Jun 2023 09:06:59
Rodger’s issue in transfers was that he was at odds with the committee and therefore we ended up with two transfer strategies as a compromise.

Also Rodgers wasn’t a pull for the best players. Alexis Sanchez for example.

The two windows after Suarez left were simply horrible and I was gobsmacked he was even allowed to be involved in the second (his last) one.

Ilori must have been crap in training because he didn’t get a chance. It was his speed that had us excited as we had Carra/ Skrtel the season prior.

15.) 02 Jun 2023 09:15:08
Love it, as if the present window isn’t causing enough stress and grief we are no revisiting old transfer windows to build up the downer. ??.

16.) 02 Jun 2023 09:51:47
OliRed if losing the title is all down to him in your opinion, then coming that close should be all down to him too. I don't understand the logic where all the ills are attributable to him, but none of the positives were. He created a good attacking structure, realised the potential of SAS and developed Sterling through the season. Gerrard as the No6 was a masterstroke offensively, and more often than not a disaster defensively. Our defensive roster was quite frankly pretty mediocre, but he coaxed pretty decent performances out of even Jon Flanagan, who was playing well above his level. Sure we conceded 50 goals, but we also scored 101 I think, which is our highest ever PL tally. It was a very entertaining season, which ended heartbreakingly, but first time in years, where I actually felt we could win the title. So I would always have a soft spot for BR for giving me that.

17.) 02 Jun 2023 12:12:53
I still believe losing the title that year came down to Henderson's red card. IF he's in the side, we win the title in my opinion.

18.) 02 Jun 2023 15:31:04
TheKopArmy, of course. You think I separated the two or something? BR was responsible for us getting into the CL for the first time in 5 season at the time.

He is also reponsible for us not winning a title that City literally had no interest in winning cos they handed us the initiative a few times in that run-in esp after we beat them with the "Coutinhoooooo" goal at Anfield. They dropped points v Sunderland 3 days after that game in their only game in hand and that was the end for them. Or so we thought. Two things can be correct at the same time.

I never thought we could win the title for the exact reasons I mentioned at the time even tho, I was obv. rooting for us to do so hence when we wet the bed, I was not surprised. The possibility was always lurching, IMO. I was still sad when we lost it, tho. Still hurts esp. for Gerrard.

I think 10 probably goes to a new signing like McAllister yes. It was available at the start of the season and none of the current players took it. 7 and 9 would be great on Diaz and Nunez respectively.

JK23 Klopp would choose captain and vice and players vote from 3rd captain onwards. He could choose to retain this approach or just move the players in the current leadership group up by 2 places each.
