question for the eds,

with Liverpool being linked with several goalkeepers to provide either competition for Mignolet or replace him, what does that mean for Danny Ward. From everything I have read he seems to be doing very well on loan and I know Ed01 has talked highly of him. Will he be given a shot to beat out either Mignolet or whoever we may buy? Also I think Ward is 22 right now, at what age do most keepers enter their prime years I would think it is generally older than outfield players?

Thanks, have a happy new year to all.

Lee in Philly

{Ed001's Note - well the plan was to give Ward the season on loan and then examine it in the summer and then make the decision. The worry is whether or not we can afford to spend the end of the season relying on Mignolet. From what I am told, it all comes down to what keepers are available for a reasonable price in January. No firm decision can be made until we know what the options are, but Ward is well liked and we do want to hold on to him. We would look to loan him, if a Migs replacement was brought in, similar to the way Chelsea dealt with Courtois.

As for prime years, it is generally older, yes. Normally they are mid-20s before they begin to shine, though there are exception, notably the 16 year old currently in goal for AC Milan. For a keeper, experience is normally at least as important as agility.}

1.) 28 Dec 2015 19:36:34
thanks for the info, i feel that Ward could be our future number 1 for a while if he keeps up with this progress!

Regarding mignolet, is klopp aiming to replace him in the near future? january doesn't seem to be a good transfer window to find value for money with the goalkeepers available at the moment!

In your opinion what would you do with our current goalkeeping situation, in all aspects (1st team keeper, reserve, coach, etc)

{Ed002's Note - Read the posts - all covered before.}

2.) 28 Dec 2015 19:44:36
Timo Horn is available in January (plays for Koln) . He has a buyout clause of around €6 million. He Has huge potential IMO but most importantly he's already a substantial upgrade on Mignolet.

3.) 29 Dec 2015 00:12:04
The Milan kid is truly amazing! Not many 16 year olds any positions nowadays, I can't think of many keepers around under 20 even!

4.) 29 Dec 2015 00:22:12
Eds with what you're saying, then it wouldn't make sense that we are offering Migs a new contract. Are we or are we not in the process of offering him a new contract? Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - I am pretty sure this has already been done to death on here, but it does make sense if you intend to give Ward time to develop.}

5.) 29 Dec 2015 02:56:39
Simone Scuffet of Udinese is another to look out for only 19.

6.) 29 Dec 2015 12:12:02
Ward has lots going for him, he's tall, agile, commands his box and communicates well, good distribution and uses the ball well. Has kept 11 clean sheets this season which is a superb achievement. I'd be happy to see him given the opportunity.

18 May 2015 20:35:24
would liverpool have any interest in Leroy Fer? He'll obviously want out of QPR after relegation. He and Can would at least provide some size in the middle of the park. I admittedly don't know how good he really is considering his team got relegated but on the other hand he has 11 caps for the Dutch national team and I have a man crush on all dutch players.

Thanks.

Lee in Philly

{Ed001's Note - no, he is not good enough.}

1.) 18 May 2015 22:23:51
that means we prob sign him then

2.) 18 May 2015 22:59:44
I think Philips is a more capable player than Fer. That being said, I don't think any QPR midfielder will improve our squad.

3.) 19 May 2015 01:28:17
when has that ever stopped us buying players Ed01!? :)

{Ed001's Note - good point, I will expect a £35m offer to go in next week then!}

22 Dec 2014 01:26:24
Saw a report linking liverpool with christoph Kramer. Any truth to that one

Thanks

Lee in Philly

{Ed002's Note - A move, possibly in the summer, for Christoph Kramer to the EPL is possible - Arsenal is the interested club.}

Question for Ed002,

rumor that i read said PSG is shopping Lucas Moura to various teams, Liverpool being one, because of FFP. I was assuming the transfer would be at a discount to what they paid, 35.2MM pounds according to transfermarket.com? Does selling someone at a loss really help a team like PSG in FFP? I would have thought realizing a loss would actually hurt for FFP purposes, but maybe saving salary etc makes it worthwhile?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Lee

Lee in Philly

{Ed002's Note - I rather suspect someone has jumped the gun in respect of Moura being "offered" to Liverpool. As for FFP, it is nothing to do with taking a loss - it is related to the sanctions that some of the clubs, including PSG, are under.}

Question for the eds

There is an article on liverpool echo site about several players that are available in the summer on Bosman transfers. I believe that most of these players get some sort of signing fee so they aren't truly free from a transfer perspective. Is there a ballpark range that these sign on fees tend to run, I realize it will depend on the player. Also, do agents fees also play a part in Bosman's, like they do with regular transfers.

Thanks.

Lee in Philly

{Ed002's Note - (a) It is entirely case-by-case Lee. (b) Regardless of being a Bosman transfer agents, representatives and other hangers on will want their pound of flesh. Again the amount is case-by-case.}

Question for any or all of the eds or other posters. Curious what people think of Liverpool/ Klopp's defensive frailty. I have heard various theories, poor goalkeeper, need new centre backs, lack of a true defensive mid, philosophy is too attacking etc.

I looked up Klopp's record at Dortmund and Liverpool. In terms of goals against at Dortmund his teams ranked 2nd best his first year, 9th his 2nd and from then on 1st (won Bundesliga), 3rd (won Bundesliga again), 4th, 2nd and fell to 7th his final year.

at Liverpool their record defensively is 9th best first year (couldn't break out just his games so it's a Rodgers/ Klopp combo), then 5th best last year and 16th this year albeit a short sample so far.

His drop to 7th, after a very strong defensive record in his last Dortmund year and his liverpool record so far might mean ed002 is correct I think I remember the quote Klopp was "figured out" (hoping not to put words in ed002's mouth) or something to that effect.

Or is he still the guy with a pretty good defensive record at dortmund and he just needs to keep building the team.

Just curious what people think.

1.) 25 Sep 2017 21:09:46
I think you've got far too much time on your hands.

2.) 25 Sep 2017 21:15:37
He is a very good manager who took us to 2 cup finals in his first season and achieved champions league qualification in his second season. Obviously the defence still needs some work but we will get there. Clearly some people think that 2 years is enough time for Klopp to turn a club that hasn't won the league in 26 years and finished in the top 4 twice in 7 years into world beaters.

3.) 25 Sep 2017 21:23:42
Redal,

you would be correct, but hey got to fill the day somehow.

4.) 26 Sep 2017 01:26:54
I think klopp will get us there. We have steadily improved under him but it will be very difficult to improve on last seasons 4th place finish this year. Our rivals look very strong and have strengthened their teams well in the summer. Teams like spurs and arsenal will always be a threat and have a chance of ucl qualification. Chelsea have a strong squad.

I think if we had of gotten VVD and keita this summer we would have a much stronger chance. It's going to be hard and if you offered me fourth now it would be very hard to turn down. There are promising signs though. Palace watford Burnley and Leicester are all games we could have lost last year and I thought we showed brilliant character on Saturday to hold on. Although what Shakespeare was doing subbing the two players who can create something for vardy and co to get on the end of, I don't know.

I like the way klopp has mixed it up this season where we are not playing the high press constantly. Some games we have sat back and still won well. We are a bigger threat with cout's playing and I'm looking forward to the return of Mane, lallana and even Clyne. Especially lallana. I think he could be our most underrated player atm. Amazing when he is on form. Another win tomorrow will do wonders for the boys confidence. Mane to score for me and perhaps a first goal for AOC.

5.) 26 Sep 2017 01:31:40
I think he's struggling to sort the defence out, but he is also capable of adapting (e. g. towards the end of last season where we were decent) so give him time. In the PL you face all sorts and he is still learning.

My own view on the defence is it's partly personnel but partly system too. In some games the high press is working, but it tends to be against the better sides IMO where possession is more evenly distributed and they play less long balls. His major problem tends to come when we have lots of possession, we have pushed both fullbacks forward in attack, and the midfield steps up to press in middle of the pitch, leaving the CBs exposed if the opposition can play between the lines.

Mix that with CBs that struggle with pace and a weak GK who doesn't like to sweep and we look exposed way too often. At Dortmund by contrast he played with a true CDM who can provide the cover whereas Hendo likes to step up into tackles, and Can is still learning the position (and can switch off and not track runners) . Oh and of course on set pieces where we are just poor.

I would personally like to see him play more of a deep 2 man midfield and a 4-2-3-1, I think Can and Hendo can play double pivot and sit slightly deeper to dictate play going forward and provide defensive cover when we lose possession, allowing the FBs to create push forward to create width, with Mane and Salah as the inverted wingers, Coutinho at no.10 and a CF.

Alternative is to play 4-3-3 but tell our FBs their key responsibility is defence and to sit a bit deeper, and play Can in a true DM role like he seemed to do in the first half against Leicester. That would also Hendo and Coutinho to run the middle of the park further forward and release the front three.

Either way would work IMO but the other thing we absolutely need to fix is set pieces where we don't seem to be brave enough or organized enough in defence. We need to harden up quick and clear the ball first time, we are bullied far too often.

6.) 25 Sep 2017 22:40:58
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the acquisition of Hummels a big factor in that? Perhaps VVD could've been our Hummels.
A lot has been made of our defensive frailties of late but I do believe if he's given time Klopp will get it right. He's shown in his short time with us that he won't waste money on players that don't fit. If the right type of player isn't available he will make do with what he has until the right player is available. It's frustrating but I think it will stand us in good stead in the long run.
He's taken chances on the likes of Klavan and Karius but each cost less than £5mil. The pacey, ball playing, strong, leader, organiser type defender we need will cost a hell of a lot more so he needs to get it right and those players are few and far between at the moment.
We don't want stop gaps we've had that for years. Klopp should be applauded for having the patience and ambition to aim for the best players he can. Yes he's gone about it the wrong way and overstepped the mark but it's in the interest of getting the very best players to our club. I for one can forgive him for that.

7.) 26 Sep 2017 13:00:54
Think Ed02 stated just the other day Hummels was already they're brought in by zorc for Thomas doll who was the manager at the time, I personally think klopps struggling with the defensive side of how he likes this team to play simply due to the extremely faster pace of premier league football but there is also some basic decision making errors by the players as well which is exacerbating the situation just my 2p's worth but it does make it an exciting team to watch, what was it involved in 34 goals last ten games lol, looking forward to tonight's game.

Man the negativity. People asked to see a lot of the young players and are now bitching that they went out in the first round. Look Gomez made a mistake playing them onside, but hey he's young that's going to happen. I for one liked some of what I saw. Ward looked confident coming out. I thought Gomez looked pretty good at CB and to me Robertson would be my first choice left back. Grujic is very intriguing to me with his size and ability. thought we had a very good first half but didn't finish. When Okazaki came on it changed the game a little. But hey I think we learned there is some young talent here that will get better with time.

If you want to kill Klopp you can do it but I for one think he knows what he is doing.

Lee in Philly

{Ed025's Note - you think grujic had a good game lee?..

1.) 19 Sep 2017 21:55:51
Did you really watch this game pal? Take yr red glasses off an look at the facts.

2.) 19 Sep 2017 21:56:15
I am sure Klopp had absolutely no idea what went wrong today or against Burnley and probably on Saturday as well!

3.) 19 Sep 2017 22:06:07
No we're playing fantastic aren't we?

Can you blame people for been negative? the team is playing absolutely shite. We're just not winning the games we should be winning, yet your moaning about all the negativity.

4.) 19 Sep 2017 22:13:01
Can I borrow your glasses Lee, life will be so much better . sorry mate no positives today . and its not Okazaki coming on that changed the game its taking Couts out allowed them to start going forward in numbers.

5.) 19 Sep 2017 21:59:49
When Okazaki came on, it changed the game drastically, not a little.

He did what most Leicester players wernt doing until he came on, he ran straight at us. Our players get scared when people run at them xD.

6.) 19 Sep 2017 22:16:23
We were unlucky tonight and have been for the last 27 years apparently.

{Ed025's Note - love it jayden..

7.) 19 Sep 2017 22:21:27
we need better coaching/ training in defence goalkeeping and defending set pieces we don't have the best line up but for all the players making similar mistakes it surely is practice the wrong things or something of that nature making signings won't help if we are poorly trained and organised.

{Ed025's Note - you need a defensive coach mate..

8.) 19 Sep 2017 22:31:44
RP, They also took advantage of Cou coming off as he was a thorn in their flesh which is why they defended deep in the first half and had Solanke been a bit more lucky, he would have scored. Ward was very good, Ings played again and Woodburn and Gomez played well. We lost, I'm cool with it. We move on.

9.) 19 Sep 2017 22:46:34
Move on to more of the same? The teams a shambles.

10 Feb 2016 18:32:26
Ed001. curious your thoughts on filling some of our weak spots through younger players versus transfers. I believe you have talked a lot of the need to repair the defence. Obviously it will have to be a mixture of transfers and youth. anybody stand out from the youth as real potential starters if not right away, pretty quickly for goalie, back 4 or defensive mid. Is Joe Gomez's long-term future at centre back? what have you thought of Ilori so far, shown you enough to think he has potential to work or not. Is Stewart a real option for defensive mid?

Thanks.

Lee in Philly

{Ed001's Note - those 3 you have mentioned all have the potential. Gomez and Ilori have the potential to fill the centre back spots, and I do think Stewart has the ability to hold down the defensive mid speck. We do need to look for a keeper, if Ward is not going to get a shot now then we clearly have no intention of giving him a chance. Fulton looks decent for the long term.}

1.) 10 Feb 2016 19:10:02
Spurs have giving young player a chance in recent years and done no harm at all to be fair Stewart is a good player Europa league is a opportunity to show case his talent.

2.) 10 Feb 2016 19:21:15
I know ilori has been hailed as the Saint, then abused a bit as per normal, but the improvement in fitness definitely helped, he played a midtable or higher team, and conceded less than our usual defence in two games. He has areas to improve but has the time, and physical attributes to succeed. I'm sure playing with Lucas helped a lot, especially speaking the same native tongue. I'm sure having flanno next to him helped too. Would like to see a lineup of like flanno ilori sakho Moreno Stewart hendo can coutinho firmino sturridge some day.

3.) 10 Feb 2016 19:43:21
Ed001

have you heard anything about why Ward has not been given a shot despite being recalled. It's the one thing that baffles me about what Klopp is doing. would have thought he would get a shot in one of the cup games. Is there something they are seeing in practice that they don't like?

{Ed001's Note - I have not heard anything sorry.}

4.) 10 Feb 2016 20:17:01
Isn't Danny Ward cup-tied? I don't know if that means for all the cup competitions though.

5.) 10 Feb 2016 20:30:04
Fencey, they speak Portugese in Brazil., not Spanish.

6.) 10 Feb 2016 20:37:06
ilori was shouting at players to get into position regardless of the language - something we do not see enough of since Carragher leaving!

7.) 10 Feb 2016 21:02:16
Ilori is portugese.

8.) 10 Feb 2016 21:06:27
More No - Tiago Ilori is Portuguese.

9.) 10 Feb 2016 21:07:20
I don't understand the Ward situation either, as surely if he had been brought in last night, done well, he would either have taken over the number one spot or at least given Migs a kick up the backside in saying, if you mess up in the PL, I'm here! It's what competition is all about, players keeping others on their toes!

10.) 10 Feb 2016 21:17:13
More no, who do you think was speaking Spanish, Ilori?

The guy has 10 U21 caps and was signed from Sporting Lisbon, which I think you will find is in Portugal .

11.) 10 Feb 2016 21:27:33
More no, they also speak Portuguese in Portugal, hence why ilori and Lucas both speak Portuguese 😂😂.

12.) 10 Feb 2016 21:47:50
He was born in England and has played football for teams in Portugal, Spain and France, so I think he can speak all 3 languages.

13.) 11 Feb 2016 01:08:10
Here's my best guess on the Ward situation.

As awful as Mignolet is, it may be that Klopp doesn't like what he sees from Ward in training. Could be that he's just not up to the level despite a decent loan spell.

Similarly, Klopp took forever to give Bogdan a chance, and I expect that was also because Bogdan didn't look good in training. And, once he finally got a chance, Klopp got burned with two huge Bogdan mistakes that cost us points.

He might feel he'll get burned by Ward, too, if he's not looking impressive in training sessions.

Granted, Mignolet has cost us countless points. But he may, right now, be the lesser of all the evils. That is a scary thing.

I just hope Klopp's constant open backing he's giving Mignolet is just BS to give Mignolet as much confidence as possible for us to make it to the summer. And then he's shown the door.

25 Jan 2016 21:00:35
If Ed01 is around had a long-term question. If you try to picture our next year or whenever starting 11 given what we have and what we might need how do you see all these rumours of different players we are interested in playing out?

If we get Texeira (big if) does he play in the front four with Coutinho, and have Firmino behind a striker we sign or Ings/ Studge when healthy? or will Firmino remain as striker and we have an open spot behind the striker?

and regarding the back half of the central midfield there have been rumours about Xhaka over time as defensive mid or other opinions that we need a defensive mid as Lucas ages, but do we even need defensive mid, because if Firmino drops behind striker then that leaves Can and Hendo behind him. I guess I am getting confused about what the long-term strategy is for our week in week out starting 11. seems like too many links to players that we may not have regular spots for?

Also do you think Klopp is likely/ unlikely to overall the back four to one extent or another? if so we are again looking at another summer of a lot of movement.

thanks.

Lee in Philly

{Ed001's Note - the plan will change depending on the opposition, so there is no single plan as such. Flexibility is the key word here.}

21 Jan 2016 19:28:45
Question for the eds,

Saw Klopp's press conference regarding his view of loaning the young players out. it's clear he wants to change some of the policies of Rodgers or management (whoever was in charge of loan decisions before) . He emphasized building up a team and a person's understanding of their position and he feels that is best done at Liverpool. My question is do the eds agree or disagree with this approach. Just curious of people who follow the game closer than I do.

Thanks.

Lee in Philly

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what he said but the club need a better plan for how they deal with loans - which are valuable as they give experience.}

1.) 21 Jan 2016 20:11:25
Agree Ed, but I'm a traditionalist and suspect a stronger reserve side/ league would be much more beneficial.

I reckon clubs need to get together, along with the league, to invest money to improve the quality.

It would be nice for the people less fortunate to be able to obtain tickets (or them stuck on the principle of not being ripped off) to see some of the bigger players slogging it out.

2.) 21 Jan 2016 20:14:16
Can't agree more with ed002. Recalling players who aren't a getting game time isn't a horrible idea, although it leaves the question why was such a horrible loan deal created? Also, why recall ward to play in the u21s when the experience he is getting with Aberdeen or whoever it was was invaluable. First time every week. It makes no sense if he isn't going to see first team football here.

My last post and I'll leave you alone for the night. Your last response about results not being the only thing that earns recognition. Implication being th club or the owners is poorly thought of? If so can you elaborate why?

Didn't mean to imply that FSG are evauating talent but they are the ones who ultimately evaluate the people who do evaluate the talent. I don't really know them sues behinds her scenes as well as the eds but looking at it from the outside the whole transfer process from scouting to determining what the needs of the teams are to the negotiating side seem dysfunctional.

Also ed02 I'm not saying that the side is terrible but it's not a top European side. Just in the EPL I would easily take Spurs Arsenal and City's first team squads over ours. So at best I would say our collected talentbis third in the league

I will cut them some slack though. We won't really know how good the squad is until they have Ings Sturridge or Origi healthy consistently.

Lee in Philly

{Ed002's Note - FSG are a group of investors who, for the moment, own Liverpool football club. The club has it's own board and operates autonomously on a day-to-day basis and FSG do not appoint scouts etc.. It is more than results that earn recognition in Europe - perhaps that is one failing the owners have.}
