Question for the ignorant (I'm Australian, forgive me), I've seen a bit about strengthening our spine. In Aussie rules football the spine is the 6 central players out of 18 from full back to full forward. Teams very rarely change formation, and when done it is usually dropping a player back to act as the 7th defender.

So what constitutes a spine in this game? Is it dependent upon the formation used or does it just mean every central player? Does a 5-3-2 have a spine of 7 or 5 or 4? Thanks for any replies and keep up the great work eds.

{Ed002's Note - It means the central players goal, centre back, central midfield and centre forward.}

To the Ed's, or anyone else really, my issue with the pen wasn't that it was given (thought it was soft but I don't know enough about the sport to say it was/ wasn't there) but with the positioning of the ref.

I used to umpire Aussie rules football, and the benefit of having two or more central decisions makers means that it's easier to get into a side-on position to be better able to make that decision. To me the ref was largely guessing as to how much force Lovren used because he was behind play.

My question is has there ever been discussion about adding an extra ref (I think another 2 linesman would be great as well)? It seems to be something that would be easy to implement and I don't see it having a detrimental effect on the game, but see a lot of upsides. How feasible do you think this would be?

And thanks for all the hard work you all do. It helps an uneducated Australian understand the game a little better, have a merry Christmas too.

{Ed001's Note - not that I am aware of, though I have always said that extra linesmen would be a big help myself. The extra ref would probably help as well. Anything to make decision making instantaneous rather than having to refer it to videos, imo.

There will always be grey areas to argue over and they should not be removed from the game. But we should make it as easy as possible for the referee.}

I believe what you are saying, Ed. However, there are extra refs on the goal line in the CL and the Serie A BUT thy seem to either have no input, get overruled by the center ref or are just there to see if the ball crossed the line and have no broader powers. Which is it, in your opinion?

{Ed001's Note - they are pointless because they are not in a position to see anything of any importance. If they are side on they have a much better view and can have more input.}

I play hockey and they have two refs communicating by headset, one in each half. Whoevers half it is in is responsible for the call, but can take guidance from the other of they are not sure. Seems to work well if the refs are open to take advice and give it.

Firmane we had the same! It means that the refs are in a better position to make a judgment if it’s a quick counter.

Would that be something that could work Ja the future?

Why not an extra field ref? Other sports make use of it quite well. These are older guys expected to keep up with prime athletes on a full pitch.

Sorry not that tech savvy so hope this ends up in the right place. Also apologies if this has already been covered as we don't get a great deal of coverage in the land of Oz. My question is if a super league does get created what are the chances that a team in there still has reserve team competing, kinda like a Barcelona b, but in there national league?

P. s. Even if this doesn't get approved, thank you ends for all the work you do, much appreciated.

I can't see the national leagues approving it as it automatically downgrades their competition.
I guess, at the end of the day money will talk.

A bit of an extreme example, but Daniel Menzel, who plays for the aussie rules team I support has had 4 knee recos. He did his last one (hopefully) in 2013. He played his comeback game in the back end of 2015,but is only now getting back to his best. Any of those major knee type injuries need to be managed carefully.

As an aside, anyone who is into sport in general, might want to look up "Dan Menzel — A Long Way Home" on youtube. pretty decent doco.

Don't mean to sound stupid. But wouldn't most people prefer neuer to their incumbent?

If you want a work around you can remove the tree but keep the lights and hang them somewhere. Put them on a mantelpiece and turn them on when needed. Sorted.

The major problem was they didn't offer it as separate service, you had to get a contract with them and potentially pay an early contract exit fee if you were worth another provider. Most people I know did what I did and used the account of a friend/ relative who had no interest in the game.

I think that optus screwed themselves over and will lose a fair bit of money but hopefully that means whoever gets the next rights realises how much money it can generate if done correctly and that means better, cheaper and more wide-spread coverage.

When I went up to brissie to see them it was mostly 1st team squad mixed with a bit of young prospects (Gomez and Ibe) . I'd imagine it will be similar barring injured/ returning from injury players. Regardless, it was a great experience, I might never get to see them live in England, but at least I've been able to see them albeit in a friendly.

I'm on the other side of the globe so not fully across it. I know he stuffed up and has been punished for it (assuming that he gets matched related bonuses and obviously can't get them off not playing) . Does he have anyway of redemption though? If he's done so bad a thing then the contact should just get terminated maybe? If not then surely he deserves a chance to prove himself and put in the hard yards (if he hasn't fair enough to dump him) . Just a view from oz, feel free to enlighten me

{Ed002's Note - Klopp wants him gone. There is nothing else at all.}

Does anyone know if Foxtel will offer their liverpool tv channel online? I paid for their epl on demand last season and it wasn't too bad for the price. Wouldn't mind paying a similar amount even if it means delayed games.
