Another great podcast guys, nice work!

ED001, I was just wondering if by playing two up top, and trying not to lose out in midfield we tuck any wide players we play inside to better protect the middle of the pitch, we leave Clyne exposed against Depay? If Depay wreaks havoc from his favoured LW position, then it’s likely a midfielder will go over to help Clyne… this will give a strong United central midfield pairing more space than before which could also cause us damage. We know BR loves to control the middle of the park as best he can, and this is one of the main reasons I don’t think BR will play two up top.
For what it’s worth, I’d quite like us to set up with 2 forwards. BR needs to change the system to create some attacking impetus, and frankly if we can’t score against this United defence (even without Couts and Sturridge), then I fear top 4 really is out of our reach this season.
So Ed, do you think BR should adapt his tactics to be more attack-minded against United even though it will expose our defence? Moving forward in the season, a balance of course is ideal, but we haven't shown much improvement in defence and again our attack is so impotent.

I look forward to your response!

Jos

{Ed001's Note - have you not watched Depay play? He always looks to cut inside, so tucking people in will help deal with that mate. Sorry that sounds harsh, it wasn't meant as a dig at the beginning. I was just pointing out that if you watch him a lot you will see he doesn't look to get down the sides at all. He will be constantly cutting in to where the midfield should be packed and waiting for him.}

I did not listen to the Podcast yet so no comments what Ed01 has said about the UTD game in perticular.

I don't think BR is good enough to win this match with his tactics or any kind of system. Like always, someone has to produce a magic of brilliance and Who is the only question BR would be asking himself and his coaching staff.

What happens if LVG brings in Young and Fellaini?. Young is an out and out winger who would get to byline and whip in balls. I have a strong feeling Fellaini might start playing off Rooney and Young replacing Mata midway through.

Haha a fine point ED001! Don't apologise. That was me not thinking it through.

Hopefully we will play with 2 forwards and come away with 3 points then!

{Ed001's Note - fingers crossed. I don't think I could cope with another disaster against them.}

What would be your starting XI ed001 ?
Sorry, haven't listened to the podcast yet.

{Ed001's Note - I don't remember doing anything on the team to be honest, I can't remember that. Mind we did have to keep redoing it so it gets confused.

Harry you clearly haven't watched Young play, he usually checks back on to his right peg to cross, if Clyne is any good then he should be able to deal with that. It will be a good test of whether he actually is a decent defender or not.

I would go with Clyne, Gomez, Sakho and Moreno as the back four.

Midfield Hendo (hopefully) if not fit Can, Lucas. Firmino on the left with freedom to roam, Ibe on the right with the instruction to just get the ball whipped into the box.

Up front Benteke and Ings.

4.) 09 Sep 2015 15:21:57
Not a bad line up Ed01, But unffortunately not happening. in my eyes.
Skrtel would come in place of Gomez who would keep the place at LB pushing Moreno to the bench ( that will weaken our Left side comapred to Moreno would trouble both Darmian and Mata with his pace )
Ibe won't be starting and BR would yet again pick Lallana ( Same cut inside and cramp for room)

I would slightly tweak that Line up.

Play the same back 4 as you suggested.

Can alongside Lucas in the middle.

Henderson to play the Gerrard role behind Benteke

Firmino and Ibe on other side of Henderson.

Tactics. Lucas to break up the play and Can to spread the ball and pick the players. Instructions to Moreno / Clyne to push high up to recieve the first time ball from Can / Lucas.
Stretch UTD and create the space in the middle.

Henderson would provide a much more threat than Ings.

If Henderson isn't fit, I would play Milner out wide comibing with Clyne and Firmino behind Benteke, Lucas and Can in the middle.

If we play a narrow diamond, we stop there midfielders playing hopefully, which is where their strength lies. Shaw may be dangerous without a direct opponent but say henderson is right of the diamond he can close him down and whoever is top of the diamond cover the middle. I think firmino may be better at the tip with ings up top personally

6.) 09 Sep 2015 20:06:08
In my opinion it will be.

Mignolet.
Clyde.
Skrtle.
Sahko.
Gomez.

Henderson.
Milner.
Moreno.
Firmino.
Can
Benteke.

I think he will try and have Moreno doubling up on left due to Gomez's inexperience. Plus Moreno's pace can be utilised to counter at pace when required. I do hope Sahko gets a start.

Spot on Ed and Fencey. i proposed a 442 diamond as well which will help defend against depay who comes inside a lot like Sanchez does. Hopefully, BR will be courageous enuff to do it because they are there for the taking.

A question for Ed001 if he's around:
I know that despite how much you and most of us love Suso for his wonderful ability, you said that the club (the playing staff I guess) have concerns that his size/lack of strength and pace will prevent him from being a starting midfielder for Liverpool in the future. My question is, is Cazorla that much stronger or quicker for him to have the influence he does at Arsenal? Cazorla, like Suso, seems to be able to play across the midfield; what is it about him that enables him to play regularly for Arsenal while there are doubts over Suso?
Thanks in advance!
Jos

Jos

{Ed001's Note - well Suso will struggle to have an influence for us, considering we let him go in the summer, but I understand what you mean. You could also point to David Silva, who also lacks pace, power and strength but is still one of the best players in the league. The trouble is that we are not looking at their strengths and trying to find ways to play to those. Instead we are looking at their weaknesses and worrying about how opponents will play to them.

Other players in other teams do not have those same issues. Wenger mostly concentrates on the strengths of his players and doesn't worry too much about the opposition, at least he did over the last few years. This year he has made a few concessions, but even those concessions, in using a proper defensive midfielder, are to allow the creative players to create and play to their strengths. We simply don't have the right attitude to do that within the club.

I have never understood how a club that spends so much on Joe Allen could then worry about the physicality of young players! Allen is not fast, strong or powerful, he offers little physicality at all, so why do worry when a young player is similarly lacking?}

Thanks for your reply Ed and sorry about my silly mistake!
It is a shame that that is our mentality. Yet more reason big changes need to be made to the coaching side of the club, considering the quality we have all the way down to our youth players.

Great read, Ed1 barca have the exact type of players and do the exact same thing. they have players similar to the mould of Suso in Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Neymar and so on YET these players flourish under what you just stated as in, focusing on their strengths (technical ability, ball possession, raw skill, pace, movement etc)and let the opposition worry about them. I rmember a game where japan played cameroon and the Japan coach Phillipe Trousier was asked afJapan win, how he was able to counter the physicality the ameroonians had, he said, " We have to focus on our ball movement, pace, quick passing and constant movement because that is what you do when you are 5 foot 5` and weigh 100 pounds, soaking wet". I never forgot that quote

Hi Ed002,

Can you clarify your distinction between drug testing and dope testing for me? I have had a look on many websites, but remain confused.

Many thanks.

#JFT96.

Jos

{Ed002's Note - An easy one. Drug testing is looking for any evidence of banned substances, some of which may destroy brain cells. Dope testing is looking for any evidence of brain cells in footballers.}

Ed001, I know time-frames are an area you sensibly want to avoid, but should we have any optimism for Rodgers being axed before Lucas can finalise a move away and thus possibly be convinced to stay by a new manager/coach?
Thanks,
Jos

Jos

{Ed001's Note - impossible to say. I hope so though, I would hate to lose him.}

Ed001, do you think Skrtel is a main reason for our midfielders dropping deep because of his poor passing ability?
If teams are more inclined to press Sakho but especially Can with their passing range, Skrtel has a lot of time on the ball in which really, he does nothing with. Thus our midfielders drop deep to try and make a simple outball. Yesterday, they were guilty of not providing good angles like you said - a part of an all-round lethargic performance - but if Moreno is too far up the pitch when he plays as he often is, then our options for moving up the pitch become quickly limited.
Is this close to part of our problems Ed, or is my naivety showing?

Jos

{Ed001's Note - it is one part of the problem defo. Can can play out from the back, Sakho can play out from the back, Skrtel just can't. He has shown signs of being able to in fits and spurts, so clearly it is his mentality stopping him, same as it is that which makes him constantly drop too deep as soon as we lose the ball. For me, he is mentally weak, he looks hard, he pulls and pushes and fouls (and now stamps) but he is not tough. He doesn't have the strength of character to get over his natural instincts and change his game and it has meant we have had to keep changing the whole shape of the team to suit him. While you have to do that to a degree with any player to get the best out of them, you shouldn't need to change everything to shoehorn him in, especially as he is simply not that good in the first place to be worth shoehorning in.}
