I like Emre Can as a player and think we should be building our team around him. My only problem with him is he looks like there's always a red card in him. I'm glad he's got a bite in his game, something we miss I think, but I don't know whether it's a rush of blood or not

1.) 21 Aug 2015 20:01:39
My concern is he's very slow over the first 5-10 yards and he needs to build a head of steam in running . He needs to work on this . He's got a it about him . Looks heavy to me . I do like him and hope he has a top season tho . Obv

2.) 21 Aug 2015 20:02:59
He is still quite young. All that is required is a bit of experience. I can remember a young Gerrard throwing himself into tackles. He will learn.

3.) 21 Aug 2015 20:45:00
Totally agree 5ive. Can does appear to have a slow acceleration and he seems to take quite considerable time to turn his body around.

4.) 21 Aug 2015 21:36:41
I know he's thought of very highly in Germany. Can should be playing he hasn't had a decent run of games IMO

5.) 21 Aug 2015 22:01:46
He is carrying to much weight.

He's not obese or anything but he's very top heavy.

His speed won't improve an awful lot but his stamina is woeful aswel.

I expect the if he gets games fitness issues but I'm not pointing out that.

His body is an issue.

I saw him in the under 21 euros and he is looking out of breathe and very leggy within 20 minutes.

There could be a lot worse things he needed to work on.

My only fear is he has had his last growth spurt with still being a kid and has filled out a bit and it is his natural build rather than stuff he is tacking on in the gym or burger kings.

Enough rambling

Slim fast Mr Can that is all.

6.) 21 Aug 2015 22:06:00
Gerard was dynamic . Great stride on him . Rash when he was young but could tackle . Every pass in the book a superb strike . No point in in a comparison in any level . Can is a great retriever of a situation and has ability . But a dm he is not . I fear arsenal will pass him out along with Milner . Brenda needs to change tack and not go with the previous 2 games formation .

7.) 21 Aug 2015 22:15:11
Great point by 5ive, that's my concern. I think he will be ok and Jan Molby is a good reference point in this respect. He the first 5-10 to get going but was then unstoppable. He had to be eased in for first two seasons but found his niche and strength after that. That said, patience of players and fans alike to allow development ain't what it used to be. Also the game is faster with less breaks in play.

8.) 21 Aug 2015 23:26:51
Was on a flight he was on this week. there's not a pick on him!

9.) 21 Aug 2015 23:57:38
Big Jan hardly moved 10 yards in a game! The centre circle was his domain.

10.) 22 Aug 2015 03:11:09
I agree - he looked slow and lacking mobility against Bournemouth - he's a tank when moving forward with the ball and clearly has a ton of talent but it does concern me defensively against the likes of Arsenal who rely on speed and quick movement that he'll be given the run around.

11.) 22 Aug 2015 05:12:42
Can looks like a man against boys for the German U21s. For me, he will be one of the top midfielders worldwide soon enough and will end up captaining Germany in a couple./few tournaments.

12.) 22 Aug 2015 07:08:07
For a player whose biggest weakness is positioning should never be shorn as a DM. He is a kickass B2B player for me.
We are in trouble with Lucas exit. Real trouble.

13.) 22 Aug 2015 08:22:48
He is clearly not obese perhaps too muscular but that must be his natural build. His speed is fine off the mark and agility wise he is not the greatest and perhaps some specific training may help.

14.) 22 Aug 2015 08:35:31
He's speed is far from fine off the mark .

15.) 22 Aug 2015 12:13:28
Lucas going.

I'd rather it was Brenda.

How can he not see the importance of this player ?

Bournemouth were unlucky. Arsenal will be the real test.

16.) 22 Aug 2015 14:40:01
Irish Rover to say Jan Molby couldn't run is ridiculous.

Do you not remember this Molby goal?

17.) 22 Aug 2015 15:41:32
Thank you Mr D, irish rober may also like to remember the 86 cup final, molby ran the game in the second half playing in both halves of the pitch.

18.) 22 Aug 2015 16:35:16
Molby was built like a tank but mobile like Can.

19.) 22 Aug 2015 19:27:44
I think we've got to stop comparing him to Gerrard to begin with. Cans a solid lad and a good tackler but lacks that driving pace that Gerrard had. Over 20 yards he gets up to speed and powers past players. I stick to it that the midfield should be built round him whether he's there as a DLP or a DM. He might be wasted as a DM but I'm sure he could play a similar style/position to how Gerrard played in our 13/14 season.

20.) 22 Aug 2015 20:06:22
Great goal Mr D!

21.) 22 Aug 2015 21:30:53
I wasnt comparing Can to Gerrard only that in Gerrards youth he was a bit rash also.

Just a quick post, edo1 if you're about. If you were manager of Liverpool and you were offered a swap deal between medel and lucas, knowing how much you rate both. Would you be tempted?

Dar

{Ed001's Note - no, I would stick with Lucas. I would like the two together.}

1.) 13 Jul 2015 07:07:34
I would have medal and Kovacic at most away games and Kovacic alone at home games when you play two b2b players either side of him.

Not liverpool related but just want to ask some advice in regards to coaching kids. I have a 4 year old boy, but asking in regards to lads who I work with who have kids slightly older. I grew up in the 70s where we had less things on the TV to watch/computers and the like to get disracted by so we're always out kicking a ball. We are a bit poor with coaching and facilities where I live now but my question if people could help, especially ed01, because of your coaching background is how old is old enough for coaching kids and what would you teach them? Thanks

Dar

{Ed001's Note - from the moment they can I would say they are old enough to play. Just play football with them, no need to coach children, playing football related games non-stop will be enough. Ed003's lad got invited to the Liverpool academy just because he is always out playing footie with him. Coaching should be fun.}

1.) 05 Jul 2015 12:09:22
From my experience of coaching kids, make sure they are getting used to having the ball at their feet rather than just kicking it away from themselves all the time. Just dribbling in straight lines. Other good things are just try and get them to tackle you. Make it difficult for them but let them tackle you fairly frequently or else they get bored. When it comes to kicking it, I'd say get them passing it to you and controlling passes from you from about a yard away for each year of age. So 4 yards for age 4. It teaches them to focus more on accuracy than power.

Technical ability isn't focused on enough with young kids because we think they're incapable. Two of the lads I used to coach now play in academy's because I put more emphasis on control than the classic English "try hard". The best footballers make the game seem effortless until they are surrounded by players of similar quality.

2.) 05 Jul 2015 13:27:06
They play in academies because of you, did you do the selectors a 'favour'

3.) 05 Jul 2015 13:44:21
I played football from the age of 5 on the streets of Liverpool 8 in the 60s and wasn`t coached until the age of 11 when I was lucky enough to be chosen for Liverpool Schoolboys under 11s. Attended a few coaching schools in my teens and went on to represent u14s and u15s Liverpool School boys. I played every waking moment as a kid. Out with my friends or just kicking a ball against a wall for hours on end. Would even pay in my bedroom diving on my bed pretending I was a goalkeeper for the Reds of course.
My only thought was to become a professional footballer with my beloved Liverpool. Signed on schoolboy forms at 15 and even trained with the first team along with a few others that summer of 75. Eventually became a professional with Bolton Wanderers Fc in 78 and had a good 6 years here before moving abroad.
I was able to get my F.A. Full License Coaching badge in 1990 and finished playing in New Zealand as a player manager in their National League.
For me kids shouldn't be over coached in their early years and should be left to develop naturally. I am a great believer that mentality is just as important as ability and young people need to develop a love and enthusiasm of the game before you even think of coaching them. I know it makes me sound old but if we didn't have a ball we would use a tennis ball or even a can. Things were tough then in Liverpool 8 but we were out from morning till night just playing the game. Coming in for your dinner only and eating it as quick as you could to get back out their. No PS4s X Boxes.

4.) 05 Jul 2015 14:36:25
I'm a coach of an u10's stepping up to u11's this coming season. All they need at that age is plenty of touches of the ball, toe taps, roll overs, drag backs etc. I didn't introduce goals in training until u7's and just had a training poll for the players to dribble to and stop it at the pole. If there was a goal there instead of the pole the kids would just kick the ball at it as soon as they get chance.

5.) 05 Jul 2015 14:07:13
Cheers lads. I was the type that was always out playing Wembley, headers and volleys, anything, and think that's the way I learnt but thinking how much better someone could have been with coaching at a young age. I agree that it should be fun and all I do with my lad is when I'm not working is get him to kick the small ball he has from nursery home. He has no interest at the mo, and he's built more for rugby! It was just a query to see if people thought it was coach them from a young age or let them just play and give them pointers when they need it

6.) 05 Jul 2015 14:17:50
Take the micky all you want Fencey, my 9 year old cousin has had trials as well and I coached him from 3 years onwards 1 to 1.

As soon as I fi ish my degree I will be looking to get back into regular coaching. I have a real passion for it and people who know me tend to think I'm good at it. So your opinion is of little importance to me. I was juat trying to offer advice to a fellow poster.

Royzered, that was a very interesting insight into your coaching methods mate. Thanks for sharing.

7.) 05 Jul 2015 14:55:38
Completely agree with that Ashy77.

8.) 05 Jul 2015 15:43:52
I found all these comments very interesting as I have a 2 year old Red obviously lol and he does love the ball always asks where's ball and when I'm watching football he shouts football at the TV so he's very attuned with it right now so I'm hoping he will get to love it as I do. So best think to do is to keep playing footy with him for now is it because he's so young?

He does tend to pick it up a lot obviously he's still really young but he loves kicking it around. He kind of kicks it at me though not too me lol

Any advice would be much appreciated.

9.) 05 Jul 2015 18:00:59
Sorry ems it was just the way it read, that was all!
I'm not really a fan of tooting your own horn, maybe when your cousin turns pro he will thank you for making him the player he becomes

10.) 05 Jul 2015 20:49:22
At that age, footie should be fun and that's all it should be. Having played every level but the pros, footie has always been fun and even with all the tactics, systems and responsibilities on the pitch during games, I always made sure to enjoy the game.

Can I ask the editors opinion and fans too about a thought of mine. Since the last time that we won the league, do you think the club have been too carried away concentrating on keeping up with mainly utd, but now you're chelseas and arsenals over spending and panicking about losing ground. As a club we have an excellent academy but every so often knee jerk reactions and no great leader behind the scenes are leading to clearing the decks from top to bottom instead of building the club up as it was years ago

Dar

1.) No top club nowadays bases its squad on home grown players. It is not the 1960s. Not sure what you mean by trying to keep up with Utd etc. You seem to think that the focus of LFC should be its youth academy and the professional team should just be a place where the graduates of the youth academy can play regularly even if it means they play in league 2. If you don't set a high level of expectations you will never get anything.

2.) Fully agree, Lucas, had a bad start to his Liverpool career, then won the hearts of many with hard work and determination. Now he's another bound to leave the club when he's the exact type of player we need. Sad day if/when he leaves.

3.) @ Wayne - Lucas wasn't that bad at the start of his career for us, he had just made a big cultural change (in both football and lifestyle terms) from Brazil to Liverpool and was given an absolute mauling by many of our fans because he didn't set the world on fire in his early games, his treatment was shocking, his performances were never that bad, it was only that they became so good that fans started to be won over - there were calls for him to be sold many times before fans recognised his quality.

Slightly disappointed that martin odegaard has gone to Real, but guaranteed playing time in the b team and managed/ mentored by Zinedine zidane, no contest.
On a positive note, if he keeps progressing as he does, we have Harry Wilson. Young, quick, can finish, and he's Welsh :)

Dar

1.) Don't get to excited he will leave when his contract runs out by the time Brendon has done with him.

2.) He hasn't signed anything yet.

{Ed001's Note - he is just there for a second look at the club, but they do seem to be the most likely as they are offering him regular football with their B side.}

3.) He should sign for Ajax as he would be in their 1st team and playing regularly in a competitive league.

So we could have got Chilwell and zielinski, if we had dealt in the right way, for less than the price that was paid for wijnaldum?

He had a knock from the training camp in Portugal. They reckon he'll be ok for the Slovakia game.

The guys a fool, especially if he knows he's putting his career and Liverpool's participation in competitions in danger. What makes it worse is he's playing alongside a teammate in toure that was banned for the exact same thing! Good player or not, what a fool.

Thanks for the updates 23carragold. Jordan williams has been called up to the full welsh squad in the last five or six matches I think, but can't remember him featuring in any of the games up til now
