Not many top class defenders these days mate but personally, I think our defence is fine for now.

{Ed025's Note - for me salah VVD needs someone along side him who is an upgrade from lovren, dejan is a decent option from the bench for me mate..

Loke who Ed025? Lovren has shown quality mate alongside Virgil. Klopp ain't looking at CB's either he is happy with his lot.

{Ed025's Note - then more fool him KR, lovren is a mistake waiting to happen and will always be prone to the odd brain fart, that may cost vital points and i believe liverpool will run city very close this coming season so every point is vital, you cant afford to carry passengers and lovren and karius are the weakest links in the team mate..

I think there is a real dearth of proper CBs out there.

I get what you're saying Ed25 mate and I'd love to see somebody quality come in and be beside VVD but the big question is who? personally I'd rather us hold off and gradually rotate Lovren and Gomez. Gomez I have a really good feeling about personally mate and I think he will be the long term CB we're looking for in time, I hope so anyway.

{Ed025's Note - gomez may well come good salah but in the mean time an adequate replacement is sorely needed, Mcguire, alderweireld and yerry mina would all fit the bill for me mate..

Yerry mina next to vvd my good god.

People talk about minas flaws but seem to forget his pros.

He's an absolute monster. Knows how to use his size. Aerial superb. Determined, groin injury didn't make him leave the pitch. Ran vardy about even in extra time.

He's quick, powerful, tall and young. If we could get him then we would be stupid to say no.

As for Lovren, he is ok and that is that. You say he looked good next to vvd but is that not just because of vvd.

Vvd can't be expected to carry him without mistajes next season.

The league could come down to 3 points and we need everything going for us if we're to take the league off city.

A gk and cb are absolutely essential!

I’ve been saying this all along Ed025.
Yes Lovren has had a good World Cup and looks ok next to VVD but if VVD gets injured and it’s back to a Lovren / Matip / Klavan partership, for me it’s no where near good enough.

I also think we should push the boat out and buy a top class keeper if one becomes avalalible! I put s post up the other day, a quality keeper can earn the team an extra 10 points a season.

Prime example - DDG at United.

Ed25 I would love Alderweireld but would never happen, with your impending role on the transfer committee who would you bring in for the keeper and attacking midfield role if it was your choice?

Ed025, you're a good bloke but I disagree, I'm with salah on this one. Lovren is a very good defender, much better than maguire imo. Maguire has had a decent world cup and now people are going mad about him but he's just as liable to mess up as lovren. I know what you mean about lovren's inconsistencies I'm hoping he has put them behind him.

He had Ronaldo in his back pocket in ucl final and was consistently good in the latter half of the season, as he has been during the world cup.

I think he has done enough to warrant his place in the team. That's not to say we shouldn't always be looking to improve our line up, 8 don't think there are many, available who would be an upgrade, I'm certainly not sold on maguire. I like Godwin.

{Ed025's Note - its all about opinions in the end PH, myself and ED001 have opposing opinions on Maguire but if we all thought the same it would be a boring old world mate, please come back on thursday when harry kane has kicked his and vida,s arses all over the russian republic and argue your case.. :)

There are some mates you love to bits but you just constantly bicker with eachother. I'm pretty sure you and 001 are of that ilk, 025. I'm not surprised one is red and the other is blue with some of your differing opinions on the same subject.

{Ed025's Note - it will always be that way bardzo, we have a healthy respect for each other but no quarter is asked for or given, its fine for people to argue so long as it does not get personal mate...and with him being a know all and never wrong (according to him) it will always be that way.. :)

Perfection. Lallaba, Brewster, origi, Wilson for solid cover.

But amour cbs are klavan, vvd, Matip and Lovren. Not the strongest and out gks are migd and karius.

We're so top heavy it's incredible and that's where we want to streghen. We scored too many goals last year. what on earth do we want more for.

{Ed025's Note - you dont have any fears in the final 2 thirds of the pitch KB and are as strong if not stronger than city, the lower end of your spine still leaves a lot to be desired for me though mate..

Ed25, I disagree on Maguire. Lovren is a very capable CB and tho there is a mistake in him, there is a mistake in every CB as we have seen with Ramos, Pique and several others at the WC and indeed, he formed a very good partnership with VVD. Lovren shut down CR7 in the CL final in wide areas, something very few CB's can do so credit to him there. His issues are concentration issues btw his ears and if he can iron that out n w/ VVD next to him, I see a good pairing there.

Can you upgrade on him? Of course. Is Maguire that upgrade? HECK NO! Maguire simply lacks the tools and ability Lovren possesses to play the Klopp defensive system cos not just any defender or player can play in it, IMO. Maguire is poor at reading the game as he is always on his heels, has the stiffest hips I have ever seen for a CB so can't turn hence, can be turned easily (ask Salah), gets caught in no man's land when getting forward, does not track back cos well, he lacks pace, and cannot defend in wide areas (again poor vs Salah) and can't play in a high line cos well again, he is slow. He can do a fine job for England or LC in a deep-lying defensive line, a system Klopp does not play and one Lovren can play with ease.

{Ed025's Note - some fair points there brover, your right about him not being that quick but for me he reads the game very well, i remember a certain jan molby being tainted with the "hes not that quick" tag mate, speed is more anticipation and awareness than fleet of foot as i see it..

You want to sign an attacker, but the glaring difference in class in our team is Lovren and karius.

If you where allowed to change only one position right now for one of the best player in that position in the world, your surely going to pick de gea or alderwiereld.

For our team not our fantasy ones. Because we would all love Messi and Ronaldo but going for the prem.

I have complete and utter faith in Salah, mane, firmino, Robbie, Trent, vvd, hendo, fabinho and keita

Lovren and karius do not make that list.

Yeah kane can keep pushing him in the back and making him look out of position. He did it twice at Wembley last season.

Lovrern is not on van diike level, it would be luxury to have another 70 mil cb but its not a priority for me. I think lovren is fine. He got us to ucl final. But at the same time we were 25 points off city. It would be nice to have Ronaldo, Bale and Messi, I just think the Am position ius more important and although I'm willing to back karius, it would be good to get in another keeper to push him.

I Can't get over when Salah rinsed him twice against Leicester last season. I wouldn't mind Maguire as a back up but i wouldn't want him in the first team, Id have Lovren over Maguire.

Your all forgetting that these players will be playing for us and not against us.

Salah can make anyone look stupid.

What would Maguire add to us with vvd next to him fabinho and Henderson in front, in a team with minimum 60% possession most games who only reason concede corners and free kicks and long balls.

The only team. he might struggle against is city and sane but for everything else he would offer would be phenomenal.

Sometimes you have to visualise them with us and what we actually suffer from.

Corners. Well his meaty head will come in handy.

Goal kicks. ditto

Ser pieces. ditto

Lukaku. Ditto.

Jesus and sterling caused vvd some problems, so should we sell him?

In general having a unit like Maguire would only streghen us.

Yeah, defence is where we need to strengthen on paper. But actually last season after January we had a very good defensive record. The back four has to be a unit and chopping and changing isn't always the way.

Might not look strong on paper but they performed very well and can only get better. If you're going to buy a new centre back it has to be a massive signing. Maguire isn't that, no way. His big move was Leicester and I think that says alot. If not for pickford England would be out of the world cup. A dodgy team like Sweden cut our defence up about 4/ 5 times. God knows what will happen against a good team like France or Croatia. Every team has fashioned chances by cutti g our defence up and we haven't really played anyone yet.

Lovren would get into our defence no problem, get walker on the wing.

Personally I don't rate Mina or Maguire, each to their own though of course Ed25. Alderweireld however is a different story, I really rate the lad but it sounds like he may be off to Utd? unfortunately.

Ah no ed you lost me at Maguire 😂😂😂. He's a awful old lump at the back and from what I have seen of him has very poor distribution and lack awareness of runs in behind him. As you say only opinions . My choice would be Gary Cahill. I know there is not much chance but think he would be a very reliable performer for us and give a very solid vocal cb pairing . I know a lot will disagree due to his age but I have always rated him.

{Ed025's Note - his distribution is his strong suit emre, very comfortable on the ball and can turn defence into attack in an instant, i think hes the next alan hansen who i was a massive fan of mate..

Ed25, Maguire can play the ball out the back and distribute. Well, so can Klavan, Gomez Lovs and VVD and even, Karius for the most part so no upgrade there. Also, you are correct re: Molby and yes, lack of speed can be compensated for if you are able to read the game, anticipate and be tactically and positionally aware. The prob is IMO, Maguire lacks all the things I just mentioned. I do not think he reads the game well cos if he did, he would not have stupidly gotten tight on Salah and Salah (who is built like a tank as well) spun him for dead and scored. Had Lovren done that, he would be getting slaughtered for that and rightfully so. I think Maguire tries to use his strength to overpower his opponent and gets done.

Also, a guy that slow simply cannot play the high defensive line NOR can he defend in wide areas which you will have to do in the Klopp system. This has nothing to do with having sense of awareness anticipation etc. This has to do with raw defensive pace. Either you have it or you don't and sorry, Maguire is a slow as a slug as Emre just mentioned.

I doubt Trent will get a look in for the rest of the world cup. Trippier has made the right back position his and is having a very good world cup at that. Fairly play to the lad, I thought he would struggle against Trent but Trippier has had the better of him so far. That could all change when Trippier is pushed back and is forced to defend because he hasn't really been tested in that respect. But otherwise, Trippier has been one of our better players, along with Hendo and Kane.

Either way, Trent gets some world cup experience under his belt, gets to train and deal with the pressure that comes from international duty, particularly the press. And, he is unlikely to get injured. Trent will be fresh and ready for another full season.

Not a bad set of circumstances, if you ask me.

The defence is awful. Truly.

Colombia did play properly ed for about 10 minutes. They scored and should of had another couple. They blew there shot but other will not miss the opportunity.

Stones is the worst defender I think I have ever laid eyes on and I seriously don't rate him on the ball either. He makes passes but isn't overly gifted technically.

Walker is a mistake waiting to happen but yet probably the best rb in the world at this current moment. Young needs to retire and Maguire is ok but needs someone far better if he is to play in a 2. Gareth is limited in defence which I why I think he has gone for the high numbers back there. The back 3 is not needed for games we will have possession in though and it would allow us to be e Radford on the pitch aswel.

I would go with

Walker cahill Maguire rose
Henderson
Rashford lingaard Ali sterling
Kane

But then again I'm not Gareth and I don't think he can change in now for fear of it costing us and it being his fault we go out.

Everyone knows trippier is good going forward. His delivery really is 1st class but we also know he is not so strong defensively.

Tbh, I think our defence 3 have done okay. Didn't see the Belgium game but in the others they have been fine bar walkers weak pass in columbia game. Stones has scored twice so I think Calling him the worst player ever is way wide of the mark. Maguire's runs from defence have been great, reminds me of sol campbell. They have shipped 3 goals in 4 games and are in the 1/ 4 finals. Credit where its due. The boys have done okay. Not amazing but they haven't had to be. When/ if we come up against Croatia or france/ Brazil I honestly think trent should get the nod coz he is far more composed under pressure than Kieran and is better defensively. He can also put in top notch delivery.

Ed is correct that England have not really been tested defensively and when they have been esp. vs Belgium and Colombia, they have been found wanting. Walker, Maguire, Stones esp. and the hapless Rose, have been shocking when under pressure and going against Sweden who have a couple of players like Forsberg, Toivonen and Berg who can hurt you when given time and space and are brilliant at set pieces, they could be found wanting and I don't expect Sweden to make the mistakes Colombia made by not getting after England until late on and extra time.

England are an awful team. There was 4 centre backs on the pitch against Columbia when they scored from a corner. Sterling and Lingard keep getting Pelters but to be honest Kane and Alli are the reason why we can't score from open play. They both get within 30 yards and fall over which breaks up the game and prevents it from opening up. It is so boring to watch and it's really hard to get behind two divers.
