I feel we are being a little harsh on Owen's comments. Surely he was admitting what we have always known - that without pace he was finished as a footballer, but he didn't want to give up on the dream. There are clearly many things he can be criticised for - but I am ok with him on this one. I never warmed to him hugely, and thought him 1 dimensional as a footballer, but am intrigued to know why he has such a bad rep? I never saw him do anything particularly dirty on the field, and just thought him a bit dull. But clearly there was more going on behind the scenes? And I really disagree with the poster who says it doesn't matter if our players are horrible people. person that I am, I want to like our players.

I'm with you.
heard the full piece and thought his comments were fair enough.

I've disliked the guy for years now. The United move aside, he's the reason Fowler was moved on.

3.) 27 Aug 2018 01:17:21
I know people who have worked on Owen's properties, they all hate him to the bone.

I also know someone someone who did Rio Ferdinand's flooring and said he was the nicest guy you could ever meet and got a 5K bonus.

{Ed001's Note - Rio was a Liverpool fan as a kid.}

I think on this one, his comments were pretty fair and doesn't really bother me. Not a fan of his though, I remember seeing a video of him and I think it was Big Nev with a 15 year old keeper in training and Owen was acting like an absolute cretin to this poor kid. But, I've never met him personally so can't be too critical.

Very surprised by the general lack of appreciation on here for Henderson. Surely our best midfielder since Alonso? Who was also under appreciated while we had him. But once he had gone, how we loved him.

Henderson wouldn't make my top ever LFC midfield - and nor would Gerrard - but we are lucky to have him.

And the loathing of Lallana is also weird. Guy gets injured a lot, but when fit he is a gem.

I like lallana too. Gerrard better than hendo though.

2.) 23 Jun 2018 01:25:41
Depends what you by "since Alonso", If you're referring to Midfielders we've signed since signing Alonso, then he's definitely up there. I'd argue Coutinho has probably been our best midfielder since Alonso, but its tough comparing players who carry out two completely different functions in the midfield. Either way you're right with regards to Henderson being underappreciated.

Lallana is a talented player who was great for us last season. However considering the signings the club has made, he's definitely fallen down the pecking order. Given his age, he should really be playing first team football and its likely he'll have to leave to get it. If he's happy with a squad role, fantastic. Useful player.

Interested in knowing who you midfield would be if Gerrard wasn’t in it! Can’t think of 1 better midfielder Liverpool have ever had never mind 4!

4.) 23 Jun 2018 05:13:00
Ill give you the obvious one nulty. Souness. I'll let other give you 3 more. Stevie is up there, But we've had a good few on par with him.

5.) 23 Jun 2018 08:00:20
Nutty, Graeme Souness was light years ahead of Gerrard. I’ve not seen a player like him since. That’s no insult to Gerrard, just that Souness could defend and attack with consummate ease. It was like having two men in midfield, you could see that he lifted the team by his presence.

6.) 23 Jun 2018 09:09:19
Sorry frankly but I disagree. Gerrard was better than graham souness. Souness never had to carry the whole team did he? Did he snatch victory from the brink of defeat in fa cup an champions league finals?

7.) 23 Jun 2018 13:04:46
Top midfield 4? Souness, Barnes, Whelan, Alonso. But I am biased towards the 80s. Gerrard knocking on that door, but I felt he sometimes chose the Hollywood pass, when a more measured approach was needed to win control of a game.

Here goes the whole gerrard/ alonso debate. For me Gerrard is easily the best player liverpool have had in the modern era. Those who come close are fowler, torres, alonso, Owen, coutinio and now salah. Salah has the ability to become one of the best ever. Is he near Kenny's level? Well, not yet but if he keeps scoring 40 goals a year that may be revisited.

For me Gerrard would get in any liverpool team.

Souness
Whelan
Gerrard
Barnes for me.

I also think mcmanaman was an amazing player, everyone loves him but I don't think he gets the respect he deserves as a player, Such an exciting player.

9.) 23 Jun 2018 18:51:40
Because sourness was so good he didn't have to drag the team back in final. He had done the defensive work to not have to. I will agree that the players around him were better, which without a doubt makes it easier. I encourage the younger generation that didn't get to see him to seek out some full matches from that era. He truly had it all as a CM.

{Ed0333's Note - Henderson best midfielder since Alonso? I’m not so sure young man. He’s decent but better than say Couts, no way. I don’t know where you got the notion Xabi was under appreciated from? Anybody that knows football will tell you Xabi Alonso was a living legend in the red shirt and we haven’t replaced the void he left to this day.

1.) 22 Jun 2018 22:50:52
Might get close to replacing him now ed with Keita and Fabinho arriving?

{Ed0333's Note - yes mate I agree but he was that good he needs 2 players to replace him. Xabi was a beast.

2.) 22 Jun 2018 23:12:13
Hendo is the most unappreciated since Lucas.

He is the best 'midfielder' we have had since Alonso. As he actually does what a midfielder should do.

He's not as talented as coutinho individually but far more crucial to us as a team than coutinho would ever be.

Every coutinho needs a Henderson. Not every Henderson needs a coutinho ;)

{Ed0333's Note - I’d have Coutinho before Henderson all day long.

3.) 23 Jun 2018 09:09:02
As good as Couts was and is I don't remember too many games that he won for us. I recall that Gérard was winning games for us a he'll of a lot.

4.) 23 Jun 2018 11:26:38
Coutinho is a luxury.

Hendo is necessary.

5.) 23 Jun 2018 13:54:05
Spot on klopp boss.

6.) 23 Jun 2018 15:00:59
Coutinio scored against city to make it 3 2 when we nearly won the league. At the time everyone thought that was the goal that won us the league. So yeah, he did score big goals. There were 1 0s too where he popped up with a free kick or long range shot against stubborn defences. I love Hendo but no one is ever going to pay 140 mil for him.

That said, I know what the op means by best "midfielder" couts more an am than cm. And probably right, he is the best cm signed since alonso if you don't count coutinio.

7.) 23 Jun 2018 18:51:39
But you can't count coutinho because he isn't a central midfielder.

He is an attacking midfield and in fact a lw up until last season. So h3 doesn5 even qualify for the debate.
