Forgive me if this is a stupid question Ed002, but as Matip wasnt actually selected in the final Cameroon squad for the AFCON how was there any question around his eligibility to play?

{Ed002's Note - Assuming the Secretary informed FIFA that the player had retired from International football and was not avaialable for selection there should be no problem.}

1.) 15 Jan 2017 21:53:42
Would it his retirement status not be irrelelvant due to the fact that they didn't select him. Surely if they had been under the impression he wasnt retired and not injured they would have selected him in the finalsquad? Or am I just nit picking?

So much talk about the positive effect no european football has on our potential title challenge, but is this all talk? Has it ever helped us win a title before? The majority of title winning clubs in the PL seem to have also played euopean football when they won. Is it maybe just that we have the best squad currently?

1.) 14 Nov 2016 09:27:51
I believe with the squad we have, we'd still be in the position we are in even if we were playing european football, when we're playing as good as we are I believe we could play as good even if it was 2 games per week.

To me it's kinda like saying, we get CL football next year we won't do well in the league, it's nonsense. Like you say 'The majority of title winning clubs in the PL seem to have also played euopean football when they won' Exactly mate.

Dont get me wrong I do understand people saying all we need to concentrate on now is the league due to no european footy but even if we did have it, it wouldn't change much I don't think, I think we have a fantastic team who are more than capable. If other top teams can do it we can do it.

2.) 14 Nov 2016 09:56:33
That was the only excuse we have had in past years to moan about. The midweek games and long travel. One game a week and we should be looking at the league.

3.) 14 Nov 2016 10:12:37
Two team's without European football top the league at the moment. I don't think it's the only reason, but it definitely helps.

4.) 14 Nov 2016 17:45:24
It helps BUT it is not the only reason as if it`s that was as cut and dry as many think, why is West Ham not winning the PL every season?

{Ed001's Note - because they would have European football if they did.....}

Touche, Ed.

Question for the eds if they are about (i know this isn't really the place) but what have you thought of Dundalks performances in Europe this season? Surely Steven Kenny is catching some attention in the lower leagues in England also?

{Ed001's Note - I haven't watched it to be honest. I don't really enjoy European football, so I don't tend to watch it if it is not us playing.}

1.) 30 Sep 2016 12:52:46
Quite the story, semi professional team from Ireland who have picked up 4 points in the Europa League when an Irish team has never had even 1 point before. Missed out on Champions League qualification by 2 late goals in each leg. Have drawn away to Az and just beat Maccabi Tel Aviv at home. Managed by the last manager to qualify an Irish team for europe.

2.) 30 Sep 2016 18:20:24
Kenny's done an excellent job at Dundalk, the club have always been traditionally behind the Dublin clubs and Cork City, had nearly gone out of business a couple of years he joined, only just had escaped relegation the previous season, and basically had no players when he joined (contracts in the Irish league tend to be one season at a time) . He managed to get a squad together and finished 2nd straight away, before winning the league the last two seasons.

He's really instilled a lot of belief in the side. Player for player, they're not the best league of Ireland team to play in Europe, and he also has a tiny squad, but I've never seen another league of Ireland side try to play football and bring the ball out so consistently in continental competition before. And they've been rewarded for it.

He might get poached, but he did manage in Scotland before unsuccessfully.

Rumour around here is Sam allardyce was asked if he fancied coming back to limerick they are even offering the cortina he was given to drive around in and all the pints of wine he needs in the horse and hound 😀.

Question for the eds if they are about? How is it that sky can run both Sky sports news and simultaneously run skybet? It just seems ridiculous when they promote a story on their website which says player x going to club y according to their 'sources'. This will then have a link to the betting site with updated odds because of this source and a couple ofhours later the player ends up at a different club altogether. If they are unfairly skewing the market and creating fake favorites how are they allowed to do this?

{Ed002's Note - Betting odds are calculated based on the money placed on players moving - they are not swewing the "transfer news" in order to get additional income from betting. The lesson is for those stupid enough to place bets based on what some oik says on television.}

1.) 03 Sep 2016 13:16:23
Only a complete tool would bet on a story that was released by that betting agency!

That is just modern day natural selection ;)

2.) 03 Sep 2016 15:05:20
Sadly there are plenty of tools about who will part with cash.

Just some food for thought, the general consensus seems to be the Wijnaldum in not wanted because of his attitude last season in Newcastles relegation battle and that he didn't have any interest in working to scrap for a relegation battle.
i'm sure when Newcastle signed him they had higher aspirations than a relegation scrap and he would have been signed as a player to help take them above teams fighting relegation. Unfortunately he had had steve mcclaren as a manager all season and Rafa wasnt appointed until it was too late already when his appetite for busting a gut was well and truly gone. Relegation sides needs tough minded strong players to get them through, he is not this. But that being said we shouldn't be involved in a releation battle and whether its right or wrong a player is going to be much more inclined to run around and bust a gut when they are winning games. So if the only issue was his attitude in a relegation battle then surely this shouldn't be an issue for us? Not saying we should or shouldn't sign him either just making a point.

What happens if were losing 2-0 to Stoke, or get knocked out of a cup. Attitude is hugely important - we don't need someone whos going to drop his bottom lip when the chips are down, or who only puts in 100% when we are winning.

2.) 18 Jul 2016 13:11:55
I can see what you're saying but my point is we won't be going out every week and being 2 0 down to the likes of stoke like newcastle were, players generally don't seem too bothered by getting knocked out of cups these days. If I was used to losing every week to the likes of stoke and went 2 nil down to them my head would more than likely drop, if i was usedto beating these teams every week and went 2 0 nil down and seem my teammates stepping up and busting a gut (which nobody at Newcastle did all year) I may be more inclined to get my head down and give something extra. Added to this the concern around Mane's attitude has disappeared once we signed him but he displayed an equally poor attitude at Southampton almost downing tools to get a move and getting himself dropped. Who has displayed the worse attitude?

3.) 18 Jul 2016 13:57:56
I'm just waiting for someone to come out with a statement the he was 2nd in the average distance covered to milner 😅 of course the lads head was down, he was playing for a terrible manager in a terrible Newcastle team. NIt terrible in terms of quality btw. They had many decent players. So the fact all of them were brutal shows an underlying issue. If he signs which I suspect he won't, give him a chance. Unless he is coming for a pay package he already knows himself there is no need to come to Liverpool if he is not going to put the effort in.

{Ed001's Note - the underlying issue was a lack of bottle and fight, which WIjnaldum compounded. No one had moved for him because of his laid back attitude. He is a Kenwyne Jones type of player. The quality is there to be better, but 999 times out of a 1000 he would rather stroll round the pitch.}

4.) 18 Jul 2016 15:25:18
Kopdogs, the guy is awefully lazy, doesn`t try hard enuff, doesn`t have a stomach for a fight, got dropped by Rafa for being poor and not wanting to press, is very inconsistent, all of which explains why Newcastle want rid hence, he is being hawked around. We beat up Benteke (who is a good player) for being all this yet some want all these "qualities" in a much poorer player. You tell me why we should sign such a player while at the same time, having players like Grujic Hendo, Can, Firmino, Coutinho and even Stewart who actually work harder and have more potential than he does?

Makes much more sense than ever signing him in the first place.

If you want any news on Damiao track down the user known as 'The Oracle' from the spurs site. Was a very big Damiao fan every window if memory serves me correctly.

Got to disagree with that view benny, off the field issues aside, and looking past the fact he moves awkwardly but is not actually awkward he was by a long way our strongest cb last year. the potential partnership of himself and Matip could have been formidable but sadly because of his own actions it won't be. This doesn't take away from his ability though our best cb after Matip and would have been his ideal partner. Your assessment of him seems ridicukous, shaky as they come, he held our threadbare defence together and played with Moreno beside him and Mingo behind him it wasnt him who looked shaky.

I feel like you're just arguing your point for prides sake now, there is no deal, Fonte plus cash (any random amount you suggest) for Sakho, that is fair for both sides.

Ok understood apologies. But if your suggestion overall was Fonte plus about 15m they could just pay 17m and not have to give us Fonte. There is no way you can spin this to make a good deal out of it for both sides.

{Ed002's Note - Why would Liverpool want yet another centre back? There is no more space unless someone is sold - and even Klopp is not stupid enough to buy to replace someone who is not even in the first team squad.}

We want quite a lot of money for Sakho, I'm not sure how offloading him, plus giving cash, for a 33/ 34 yr old would represent a good deal for us? This also moves Gomezto 5th choice cb, not exactly ideal for his development to have two 30+ squad players in front of him along with the two 1st choice.
