Hypothetical question. A choice of Alexis MacAllister or Gary McAllister in his prime. Who would you sign?

Alan

{Ed025's Note - Alexis all day, gary was half decent dont get me wrong but a bit of a journeyman who played in a pretty poor side, would not actually get in the top 100 liverpool premiership players for me, just an opinion of course..

1.) 14 May 2023 21:50:26
But he was great for Liverpool Ed, a wonder signing he turned out to be in my opinion.

{Ed025's Note - as i said irish the guy did well for you, i have a lot of time for proper pro,s like him mate but should never be in a conversation about great players imo..

2.) 14 May 2023 22:02:45
He was a great purchase rather than a great player.

3.) 14 May 2023 22:10:08
In terms of overall individual footballing skill, there's no comparison; the Argentinian all day long. But there's no doubt Gary gave the club some good years. A matter of being in the right place at the right time, type of thing.

4.) 14 May 2023 22:24:12
Here’s one.

Who goes down as the better free transfer. Gary Mac or James Milner?

5.) 14 May 2023 22:34:14
Milner, easy. Mac could have been had we got him a couple of seasons earlier but Milly played more league games for us than anyone else in his career and has won the lot with us.

Our greatest free transfer of the premier league era in my opinion.

6.) 14 May 2023 22:38:09
Oh, and he can (and probably has) play in every outfield position!

7.) 14 May 2023 23:43:32
Tell you what, if there was a player out there who was the same age and skills as Millie when we signed him and he was available for free, I’d fly over from Australia, rent a car and deliver him to the club myself.

Gary Mac is a deserved folk hero and was in the right place at the right time, but I’d have the Argentinian - I think he could become (one of) the right players at the right time next season.

As an aside, I thought Gary Mac’s best playing days were when he was at Leeds.

8.) 15 May 2023 02:37:05
James Milner

The model professional footballer burst on the scene at 16 and has been nothing short of brilliant ever since . I don’t recall any manager ever saying a bad word about him personally. Be sad to see him go but hope he returns in a coaching capacity because who better to teach kids how to behave and look after themselves than him.

9.) 15 May 2023 08:07:39
I think Gary mcalister was a brilliant player, going back to his Leeds days. captain of that Leeds team that won league and also captained Scotland for years.
Always felt he was a player we should've been buying years before we did, excellent passer, brilliant from a dead ball, fit as a fiddle, good attitude, could score a goal. V underrated player imo.

{Ed001's Note - I agree Digger, massively underrated and was instrumental in keeping Coventry in the Prem for years.}

10.) 15 May 2023 01:40:25
Yeah, but that free kick Ed025? I was in the Gwladys St end. Bloody mental.

{Ed025's Note - i remember it well burkey, good bit of thinking by him but for me gerrard could have done better mate..

11.) 15 May 2023 12:38:25
MacAllister is suddenly being rated on here because we are interested? Gary Mac was a great player and a level above, he was a great role model and pro and a superb player.

12.) 15 May 2023 18:16:42
Gary Mac at Leeds with the Late Gary Speed and a certain Eric Cantona was a brilliant. Powered Leeds to the title in 91/ 92 over Utd. Top class and severely underrated esp from set pieces. Was he really underrated though? I ask cos if the the late King Pele himself is name dropping you as a great player before Euro ‘96 then, you ain’t underrated, man. Just saying.

And that's only second best version of "Joelene" I've heard involving Roy Keane.

Just watching John Barnes on youtube. I nearly forgot what a sensational player he was. Just imagine him playing in his prime in this team on proper pitches. He would tare the opposition to shreds.
Proper Liverpool legend.

Alan

1.) 15 Jun 2020 20:09:45
One of the greatest players to grace the game in this country. England hasn’t seen a winger as good as him since.

2.) 15 Jun 2020 20:27:02
He has quite the extensive dvd collection as well😂😂.

3.) 15 Jun 2020 20:33:59
I remember I got the john barnes story when I was a kid on video watched it over an over pure class he was, did u see his goal against Brazil in maracana stadium Wow!

4.) 15 Jun 2020 21:13:04
Haha me mate just sent me that, barnes has quite a variety of DVDs hope they ain't fake copies 😄.

5.) 15 Jun 2020 21:37:53
When you talk about players gliding past people Barnes was the king. He didn’t seem quick but would just glide across the turf with a change of direction that defied physics at times. I don’t think the laws of gravity and momentum applied to him as they do us mere mortals.

Best of luck to Harry Wilson who starts for Derby tonight live on Sky Sports.
Interesting to see how he gets on.

Interesting how where you see one Liverpool player there are a few exes! Carson and wisdom there too, I know rangers have Gerrard but Kent Flanagan and Ejaria went and rossiter was already there!

2.) 03 Aug 2018 19:52:34
Forgetting illori?

3.) 03 Aug 2018 22:27:41
Well he is at reading now Derby.

4.) 03 Aug 2018 21:16:41
If all goes wrong at the back for reading, at least they have John O'Shea on the bench. Ain't that right Ed01?

{Ed001's Note - something like that. I think he was made perfectly for the bench. The park bench admittedly.}

Have to agree with Ed 002 on this one. We need an experienced old pro as number 2 as Alisson will be our first choice for the next 10 years. We need someone who is happy to sit on the bench and help out with the kids.

I can't believe anyone would even ask about that t**t returning to the club. Have people forgotten what he was like when he was here.

Utd are building a good team and won't be far away at the end of the season. however, I just can’t see them winning anything with Father Dougal in charge.
