Liverpools new manager has to be Alonso. Then maybe Nagelsmann. The rest that are linked won’t do anything.

Nagelsmann would be a terrible appointment. Showed poor judgement at Bayern, completely lost the squad because of that and his “tactics”, he’s on record as saying he has no respect for us as a club, and even if you can look past all that, he’s been a failure in the Germany post and won’t be available until after the Euros.

24 Mar 2024 08:28:36
If you referring to comments he made when he was the Hoffenheim boss, what he said was he "is not in awe of Us" when he was questioned about having the away disadvantage of playing at Anfield. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, and a far cry from saying he doesn't respect the club. Apologies if that is not what you were referring to though. I'm just thinking don't be too against it because I can see it happening. I don't think we will get Alonso.
Not that I want JN either mind. I think his personal affairs make him a bit suspect in my book, but of he does come he will have my support. Germany aside, his teams do generally play attractive footy.

Youd have to think he has learnt his lesson about mixing business with pleasure - can't imagine he is going to ever data a journo again and trust them. And given the situation at Bayern over the last few years, Im not sure we can judge him totally by his record there. not saying im a fan of his - just i don't know him well enough to say one way or the other.

Lot of talk on here about VAR. Understandably. However, we complained about referee decisions before the introduction of VAR, we complained after the introduction of VAR. Me, not least of all. It's a very nuanced game, interpreting the rules is very much down to individual judgement of specific situations. No method can be right all the time, mainly because of the vagaries of a human body in motion, coming into contact with another human body in motion. Yes, there are howlers, but there are howlers before VAR. Arguably there's fewer howlers now. Complaining is part of the game, but I don't think the game is better or worse for the existence of VAR, it just provides a different ( maybe more accurate? ) type of error analysis.

I would be able to accept it if there is no VAR and mistakes were still made. I mean, the referees are only human too so they are bound to make errors. This was the consensus back then before VAR and and I think we have accepted it on the basis that the decisions tend to even themselves out over the course of the season. For example, if Doku's high boot on Mac had happened where there is no VAR, it would be easier for us to accept since the referee did not have a clear view of the incident and the game was generally fast paced.

However, VAR is meant to reduce these errors, giving the referee another POV that helps them make more accurate decisions. What we are seeing now is an opposite of that, with VAR being used to justify the bad decisions that referees make. The referees are poor but instead of improving their own officiating, they are hiding behind VAR and throwing the book at anyone who dares question them. This is what frustrates fans a lot.

Trying to be fair:
Less mistakes are made with VAR and that is objectively evidenced. It's better with it, let's not try and pretend otherwise. Bar a terrible Comms issue against spurs they have got offsides decisions sorted and that on its own cuts out a huge amount of mistakes.
Now we have the ability to get decisions right though, microscopes are being put on every decision that goes wrong, even when there are objectively less of them. VAR was wrong v spurs, arsenal and City, but if VAR wasn't there we still wouldn't have got those decisions based on the decision the ref made. I have put in another post of mine that these things will keep happening until reasoning for fouls, decisions are made objective and I stand by that.

21 Mar 2024 22:07:44
The problem is the referees don’t give decisions because they think VAR will correct them if they’re wrong.

Then VAR just backs up the ref’s non decision because it’s not clear and obvious enough.

It’s blurring the lines.

At least if VAR isn’t there the ref is forced to referee the game as he sees it and although there were always mistakes we could accept them.

With VAR in its current form it’s very hard to accept that they can’t see these things and get to the correct decisions. The Doku challenge is one in a long line of really poor decisions that have directly affected the results of games. The Onana foul against Wolves being another obvious one. Rodri’s handball against Everton that cost us a title etc etc.

With 2 people looking at monitors, with 10 different angles, slow motion and freeze frame these errors simply shouldn’t happen.

Yes there is always subjectivity but these fouls are blatantly obvious and the type of errors we all expected VAR to eradicate. tjr fact that it hasn't leads us to one of two conclusions.

The VAR operators are incompetent or thr VAR operators are actively manufacturing results. its up to you which one you believe.

Totally agree BP that the refs need to ref the game bravely, so how does the game encourage that without removing BAR completely.
To me the answer is simple. Make VAR a challenge mechanic only i. e A team can challenge an on field decision (offside, penalty, goal etc) once per 90 mins if they disagree with a decision the officials have made. If the challenge is upheld they can challenge again, if not then they lose it and it's gone. Promotes the refs being brave and officiating the game properly, whilst keeping VAR if a team feels unjustly punished but not making it so they have to use that challenge strategically. Obviously I'm just spitballing and it won't happen for a while, but I do think we will end up in this situation.

Hi Ed002,

If you have some time I would appreciate a response.

Regarding the sporting director, social media has everyone an expert in what the role involves but it's a little unclear for me if it's standard from club to club or does that vary? Could you please explain briefly what they do in general and if Richard will have the full capacity of the role considering Edwards has taken a footballing role with FSG probably freeing up Gordon too.

Thank you Ed002.

{Ed002's Note - Firstly the terms Director of Football and Sporting Director are largely synonymous. Clubs allocate responsibility on a case-by-case basis so the roles are never identical. Typically, a Director of Football, or Sporting Director, will act as a buffer between the Board and the footballing side of the club. He, or she, would typically take responsibility for all footballing aspects of the club – which means the first team and the lower tier teams (although they will have someone who sits as a buffer between him and the ladies and youth teams as well). In all cases the scouting network will report in to the DoF/SP via a Chief Scout and that in many larger clubs is a world-wide operation. In some cases, although typically not in the UK, the Director of Football will look to instilling the same ethos for the game throughout the club’s footballing structure. Examples of this are best seen in the Netherlands with the likes of Marcel Brands when at PSV, Frank Arnesen at Feyenoord, Martin van Geel and Marc Overmars at Ajax. Similar approaches have been taken in Spain where Txiki Begiristain did the same at Barcelona and is doing the same at Manchester City. Some people, notably Chelsea’s chief advisor have claimed that clubs can be far more successful with this approach towards the youngsters. An old chum who, in the role of Sporting Director, has been building a new club from the ground up says he has the best job in the world, and he has already spoken with one English side to take a couple of players on loan. Some coaches do not like working with Sporting Directors, but it is the norm through most of mainland Europe. Some coaches very much want a good Sporting Director to help them out – Mr Mourinho is a good example of that.

As for Liverpool, FSG are seeking investment to again look at taking on another football club – possibly in the MLS where costs are far lower – so there is some planning going in to that. They are also looking to an NBA Franchise in Las Vegas – hence prior efforts to sell on part of Liverpool. Mike Gordon is not an issue at Liverpool, but there is someone else who is, and FSG will need to address that.}

Thank you so much Ed002 that was insightful and informative. Appreciate you time. ??.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

20 Mar 2024 16:49:25
Does this mean he gets to choose what players we sign and how we play?

20 Mar 2024 20:20:28
Edd002 who's the issue?

{Ed002's Note - It really doesn't matter.}

21 Mar 2024 00:10:55
Is the person they have an issue with me Ed? What do you mean when you say they are going to address it? Do they know I have a wife and kids? Will that matter to FSG?

25 Mar 2024 05:35:56
Davey - i've watched the bourne movies so i know what it means when it says the Americans are going to address it - you might want to go into hiding for a bit ;-)

When Klopp leaves could we still employ him to convince players to join Liverpool?

Apparently AI rank on loan Sepp Van Den Berg only behind Saliba, Van Dijk, Kim Min-Jae and Schotterbeck among CB's in Europes top 5 leagues this season. The lads having a fine season in a top league, hopefully he equally impresses the new manager this summer.

What's up, reds. Something occurred to me right now.

Remember when we played Arsenal in the 3rd round of the Cup and we had a few players out including right before kick off at the Emirates? Now when the game was seemingly going to a replay, Klopp then, sends on Bradley and Clark for essentially their debuts for the club. At the time, it seemed (and many believed this) that Klopp did not want a replay and was okay with either losing the game or getting the replay if that was what it came to.

Now fast forward to Sun. Near the end, we tried to see the game out and of course that did not happen. Then comes the final corner of the game where inexplicably, we send everyone up and leave only 2 people back.

So my question is: Was Klopp trying to win the game at all costs to avoid another game (a semi) which would have only complicated the already heavy calendar esp. since a PL game would have to be moved to acccommodate for the semi final, something he may NOT have wanted? I ask this cos he didn't care if we lost to Arsenal apparently. Now I know for a fact that he cared if we lost to Utd BUT was he more conscious/ concerned with the fixture list had we won?

19 Mar 2024 15:59:20
You're suggesting Klopp's intentionally thrown the game? Not that he's gambled on winning it in the 120 mins at the risk of losing it, cos winning it wouldn't save us any fixtures, but has in fact outright thrown the game.

Is this meant to be some sort of send up of the weirder reactions to the defeat or have you lost your marbles?

We routinely leave plus the keeper back on corners and rely on the couple of lads around the edge of the box reading things and funnelling back if there's a break. No conspiracy.

Impossible to know. But in general we’ve not been a team to play for a draw.

Folks just to keep everyone outside of Ireland in the loop. A few arrests were made in relation to the audible tragedy chanting from the Stratford Eve yesterday. It’s been reported and covered here in Ireland. Sky seemed to have focussed their attention on Jurgen walking out of an interview.
