Hi Eds.
Any truth in the Alex Meret rumours?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Thought to be the eventual challenger to Gianluigi Donnarumma as the next long term first pick for the Italian International side Udinese's Alex Meret has already attracted interest from both Juventus and Chelsea. Udinese are looking for a new deal that will give him a new contract and make him first choice next season (which seems a big jump up - and an unlikely one given the two who are currently ahead of him). I am not aware of Liverpool showing any interest by attending games at SPAL in Ferrara nor talking with Udinese but I am aware that an agent looking to represent the player said he could get him in to a major side where he will win trophies and earn much money. If Liverpool were interested he would certainly not be first choice and any chance of a future in the National side would be gone - so it makes little sense for the player - but he is clearly one of the very well thought of youngsters - and that in itself will attract attention from scouts.}

Thanks for the reply.
Sounds like one to keep an eye out for in the future. I'd rather see us linked to more established Goalkeepers that would come in as our number 1. Are you aware of any that we might be interested in?

{Ed002's Note - Sunderland's Jordan Pickford could become available if Sunderland are relegated else they will fight any sale. He is home grown which makes him attractive to English sides with Everton, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all having had him watched on a number of occasions. He will want to be first choice if he moves which is a commitment many clubs will not make - although we know Klopp is more than happy to blurt out such promises to players. Everton's interest seems more targetted on another whilst Manchester City are already in discussions to agree the transfer of their first pick goalkeeper, so Pickford may be a very viable solution for the club.

St Etienne's goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier was very much a target of Napoli but they previously made a derisory offer that was rejected out of hand. Arsenal and Roma looked at the player in the past but interest seems to have drifted. Everton has recently been watching Ruffier and has asked about his availability whilst West Ham, Liverpool and l'OM have been representated at games this season to watch Ruffier as well.}}

That's great thanks Ed.
Sunderland going down is looking pretty likely at the moment. So perhaps Pickford is the one.

{Ed002's Note - I think it would be a decent option.}

Right, that's Goal Keeper sorted. Just Left Back, Centre Back, Defensive Midfielder and Left Forward to go!
Thanks again for your insight Ed.

No Spud, I really don think signing Pickford would sort any goalkeeping problems that Liverpool have. Please explain to me what Pickford has the Karius doesn't?

End of the day Pickford has come on a lot this year because he has been given game time. Karius got around 10 matches at the start and then dropped.

We either sign a proven number one to battle with Karius or not bother, why stifle a youngester we already have in Karius for Pickford?

Pickford has looked great every time I have seen him. He was superb last year too and his distribution is great. I haven't seen enough of Karius to make a full judgement but what I have seen of him he is not as good as Pickford.

Strong distribution, great command of his area, strong on crosses and an outstanding shot stopper are pretty good reasons. I agree that an experienced goalkeeper could give Karius and/ or Ward the chance to grow. But who? Ed02 mentioned Ruffier as an option, but he has no Premier League experience. Who would you suggest as a better signing for no 1 than Pickford my puzzled friend?

Pickford is a shining light in that Sunderland team and he's likely to get better and better. He would be a great signing, more so since he's homegrown.

To be fair Puzzled Red, Pickford has always looked class. Even 3 years ago when I first saw him for the England U21's I knew he was potentially world class.

His shot stopping is good like with most good keepers, but what sets him apart is how confident he is on crosses and how quick and accurate his distribution is. He is the best English player of his generation by a long distance. The likes of Sterling, Loftus-Cheek, Gomez, Winks, Shaw etc are all good players. Pickford is a special talent though. We should've signed him ages ago.

He is definitely better than Karius right now, but I also cannot argue with your point that Pickford has had a fair chance whilst Karius has not.

I've not been impressed by Pickford when I've seen him, doesn't fill the goal very well, doesn't do well with high balls into the boxes, he has an aversion to crosses that would make Dracula cringe.

don't just have a look at the saves, look at the goals he concedes, it probably doesn't help that he's only about 6ft, which for me is too short for a top class keeper in the premier league and standing out in a very poor Sunderland side isn't exactly a glowing reference as we've been there before.

He's not the solution to the goalkeeping situation. I'd rather we bought in a good quality experienced keeper, like Begovic or someone like that.

Pickford just reeks of Mignolet all over again. Get an older, more experienced keeper in the side. Stability not youngsters from the back.

Pickford is not better tan Karius, IMO.

6ft like Shay Given, probably the longest serving keeper in the leagues history and in his prime, arguably only bettered by Reina and Cech.

What does height have to do with it. Smaller keepers have other advantages. They can be quicker to get across the goal, shift their weight more easily, faster off their line, more agile etc. At 6ft tall and with the advantage of being able to use his hands, he would need to come up against a 7ft tall player in the air to still not have the advantage.

That is English football all over! 6ft, but not tall enough. He actually deals with high balls very well. So I'm guessing you have googled his height and then made that up? In fact I believe that despite missing 7 or 8 games, he still has more successful claims/ punches than any other keeper. As for filling the goal, what does that have to do with anything. By that logic, Wayne Shaw is the best keeper available.

Fair play Dennis, you are entitled to your opinion but that comes across as though you have never seen him play a full 90 minutes.

His actual weaknesses which you didn't even reference are his defensive organisation (he needs to talk to his defenders more) and his handling of shots (as he seems to try and make every save spectacular, instead of holding on to it) . Both are more of a mental issue though. He needs confidence to talk to the back 4, and a bit of discipline to focus on being the best and not looking the best on match of the day.

Butland would be better than Pickford IMO.

6ft shouldn't be that much of a problem for a keeper I agree with you on that MK but shay given? . You could've picked a better example, because Given was never a top keeper at any time in his career. Such an overrated player.

Pickford looks good. but one good season. He may turn out to be worldy, but atm we need a stable, established number 1. let's not gamble again, and just buy a proven top line keeper. Leno would be my choice.
