Any truth to us being back interested in bringing in Nolito?

Its an old link that has been rehashed. He is 30 this year and is a pretty average player playing in a pretty average team, furthermore he would struggle to adapt to the premier league at his age.

2 players I keep hearing about from Ligue1 are Pastore and Ben Arfa. Could you shed any light on those to Ed? Please put to bed this Ben Arfa rumour it's building steam, and he's a trouble maker.

Believable0 Unbelievable12

{Ed002's Note - Pastore will be moving in the summer with Juventus certainly interested. His agent has spoken with other clubs who he sees as possible but no firm interest. I am pretty sure Liverpool has no interest.

Nice are looking to have Ben Arfa sign a new contract and then cash in on him at a later date with Dortmund, both Milan clubs and Atletico making their interest known. It is very unlikely that Inter will be able to make anything happen but Milan are pushing hard now. The suggestion of Liverpool interest might come from a statement by his agent that Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea would have been more impressed by Ben Arfa that Dembele at a game both were playing in recently.}

Were Liverpool there to scout Dembele Ed?

Agree0 Disagree7

{Ed002's Note - They all were.}

Your personal thoughts of Ben Arfa Ed?

Agree0 Disagree6

{Ed002's Note - A talented player who had issues at Marseille which they worked hard to manage; but he never settled in England. And the years are slipping by now with him being 28 or so. I have met him on a couple of occasions when he was at Toulouse and there was some simmering discontent. I don't think a move to England would be in his best interests unless he slots right in. But if he does, he could be a real benefit.}

Cheers for the information ed.

I think he's got 'Leave well alone' written all over him. His best days are long gone and this is just one final Indian summer in a wasted career. Whoever buys him is buying a player who at 29 has no long term future or value.

Was it him who put on a couple of stone over last summer?

{Ed002's Note - That might just have been me.}

Here's some proper mental gossip I heard at the weekend from my mate who is an Italian footy journalist. Anyway, he thinks that LFC are after wingers and a left back (I read that from the Eds on here, but he had no prompting from me! ) and told me that we are looking at Marko Arnautovic and Erik Pieters form Stoke. Not sure if he was winding me up or not, so take it with a pinch of salt, but wanted to share it all the same.

I can't believe we'll go through a whole transfer window without signing someone from Southampton, so what about Mane?

Southampton ron no doubt we will be linked with a few saints players but the 2 mentioned above play for stoke.

Italian football journos are notorious for knowing nothing. Further to that both players are bang average and not better than we have.

Arnoto is out of contract soon I think and peiters looks solid enough. Not major upgrades but not the worst additions. Especially is Arno is going to be a bench player behind Phillips, some pace coming off the bench 😊.

I'd rather we didn't shop for well know Prem players given their inflated fees, I think we could do better shopping in the foreign leagues. Firmino, Coutinho, Alonso, Torres, Suarez, All from abroad and all were good value for money, even Firmino I'd say is now a £50million player, just to mention a phew.

I trust Klopp will find some nice cheap rough diamonds.

I really rate Arnautovic actually, on his day he's a real threat. Who holds an interest, Eds?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You need the stoke page but approaches to Stoke City by both PSG and Hamburg have met the "not for sale" response but the club are struggling to have the "difficult" forward agree a contract extension.}

There's a few inches today regarding Timo Horn leaving for a new challenge; you'd have to think we'd be interested in him; would appear to be a good option.

If the 7 million Euro buy out is to be believed you would think it would be a no brainer to try at that price.
I don't know if the eds have or could confirm any such buyout?

There is a clause; some time ago a poster on a Liverpool forum who is very knowledgable about the Bundesliga said that the Mainz chairman had confirmed it, and just today I saw that the english media are also running with this story.
I wouldn't delve into the exact amount of the clause, I think it was 9 mln euro, but I might be mistaken; what was interesting is that it is only valid until the end of May.
However, the main problem is that he wants to be a starter, and as the reds have said numerous times, we are looking for "competition" to Mignolet. Personally, I suspect that if a good keeper is brought he will push Migs down the pecking order, but Klopp seems to rate him thus far, so we will have to trust our manager.
Eds, do you have any official list of clubs interested in Horn? I seem to recall that there was conflicting information whether we are interested from ed01 and ed02?
Cheers to ya all, looking forward to thursday!

{Ed002's Note - There no "buy out" clause and if there was the player won't have the money to pay it. If your "knowledgeable" chum has said there is he is wrong.

There is a release clause which German clubs can look to exploit.

One EPL side has looked at Horn this season following previous interest of Milan and Valencia which has gone.}

26 Apr 2016 10:06:02
Ah, sorry ed, didn't pay much attention to what type of clause it was ;> So, it is similar to Firmino's, and only applicable to German sides? Thanks for the clarification!

Agree0 Disagree9

{Ed002's Note - They simply don't work how you think - you need to ignore clauses. However, just to be clear:

This is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws.

The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA (on behalf of the club) the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax. There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about three years ago. So "buy out" clauses are very rare.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales) for legal purposes. These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. For interested clubs outside of the country the selling club may use it as a guide but are under obligation to accept a bid.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

26 Apr 2016 11:25:32
So termination clauses are like release clauses but don't have certain national parameters?

Agree1 Disagree7

{Ed002's Note - Yes Nick.}

26 Apr 2016 13:08:22
Don't think the guy is a big enough improvement on Mignolet. Personally I'd go big on a goalkeeper this year as I believe we only need a couple of players as we have Matip n grujic. Someone like Bernd Leno would do nicely or Jan Oblak.

Agree0 Disagree8

26 Apr 2016 13:40:25
Oblak is a great young keeper to be fair. Potential to be one of the best in the world.

Why would he leave Atletico Madrid though? They're probably the 3rd best team in the world after Barcelona and Bayern. Only Real Madrid, Juventus, Dortmund or PSG can realistically claim to be a better side.

Which means paying way over the odds in terms of both salary and transfer fee.

Horn, Sirigu, Mandanda and Leno are probably more realistic.

Agree2 Disagree6

26 Apr 2016 16:32:15
Sirigu and Mandanda are both very poor keepers and have a fear of crosses that would make Dracula blush and given they're both about 29 make no sense signing.

Agree1 Disagree6

26 Apr 2016 17:16:35
Isn't Mandanda available on a free at the end of the season, or has he signed a new contract?
