Liverpool have "zero interest" in Nicolas Pepe and any reports saying they've held talks with Lille are "pure lies".

Liverpool believe their name is being mentioned purely to raise interest in his services. [@MelissaReddy_]

Firmane I think she knows absolutely Zip tbh mate.

Agree6 Disagree22

25 Jun 2019 22:06:36
Really don’t see us spending 70mill on an attacker that more than likely won’t play unless we tweak the formation and I think that unlikely considering we got 97 points last season and lost one game in the league. So for me that rules out Pepe and Fernandes. A sensible from a risk / money point of view would be Fekir or another player similar that’s available for 50 and under.

Agree3 Disagree6

25 Jun 2019 22:16:02
Watched him several times. And must admit he looks a very good player! Similar style and build to Zaha but better end product. He will move to a top club in the foreseeable future for sure.

Agree4 Disagree0

25 Jun 2019 22:13:35
Jordz truth of the matter is mate I don’t see us spending even 50M on Fekir for example. Cornet for 25M ish maybe but can’t see us spending big.

Agree5 Disagree14

25 Jun 2019 22:21:32
Yeah that would make sense Virgil. I think we’ve missed some pace from the bench at times so maybe Cornet could provide that.

Agree1 Disagree1

25 Jun 2019 23:01:11
City could bring sane of the bench why cudnt we rotate the front 3 with another, cornet is raw I would like someone like leon bailey bit more tested blistering pace and is jamaican, the new john barnes .

Agree3 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - Sane wants to leave.}

25 Jun 2019 23:16:00
I think we will buy someone like Pepe, fekir, Fernandes type. Creative, can play cam or wing, I believe Pepe plays more centrally for his nation, so I would be happy with him. I think there are better players valuable that fekir to be honest, Fernandes looks like he could be a little special, I’d be tempted to go for him.

I have heard he is about too sign a new deal with city ed, not that I am in the know just paper talk, I knew bayern wanted him but I read they cooled interest.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Manchester City have priced him out of a move.}

25 Jun 2019 23:56:27
Melissa Reddy denied that we had interest in Alisson signed a few days later.

Denied we had intersst in VVD signed.

Could this be a pattern? Hope so but hard to see where he would fit unless Salah is going.

ESPN here in the States have reported that the club specifically informed ESPN that Michael Edwards personally called Lille to explain to Lille that Liverpool have no interest whatsoever in the player. Assuming this is true, I find it quite interesting.

Agree3 Disagree2

26 Jun 2019 07:16:20
I wonder if they do that for all players.

"Hi. Is that fulham? We have no interest in ryan babel. K thanks bye"

Agree14 Disagree1

26 Jun 2019 08:49:17
Aspas I find it strange that Edwards would ring Lille to say we don't want Pepe. Aspas I would just like to say am not looking to buy your house. Virgilfc as for Cornet I find signing him a strange one to surly Harry Wilson should get a chance before we go and spend £25m on him, Not sure he much of an improvement he would be on Wilson.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - There has been a sugegstion of tapping up made about Pepe and I would think that any call would be in respect of that. As far as I know there has not been any illegal approach made. Perhaps slowdog76 should consider what he says about calls to Fulham as that raises another matter about attempted cheating by Liverpool. I would hope that after the last incident the club has made it clear to Klopp that it is entirely unacceptable.}

26 Jun 2019 09:17:16
Hi Ed002, I think you missed sarcasm from Slowdog.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I bet the club would love that sort of sarcasm - after trailing slime behind the board as they begged Fulham not to press charges against them.}

26 Jun 2019 10:02:21
Ed, No illegal approach made as you say but has there been any approach at all?

Agree0 Disagree5

{Ed002's Note - How many times do I need to keep saying the same thing.}

26 Jun 2019 13:28:57
I think you'll only know the answer to that when you retire from here, Ed.

If the allegation of tapping up was against Liverpool (i'm guessing that was the case) then it kind of makes sense for the club to contact them saying they have no interest. If that did happen (and I won't just take ESPN's word for it), that should draw a line under Pepe for everyone, can you imagine the hot water we'd be in if we categorically stated we weren't interested and then went in with a bid? Lille would report us immediately.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what ESPN have said but I am not aware of any tapping up in respect of Pepe.}

26 jun 2019 22:04:31
hi gang,
we cannot stand still after winning cl, we have to be on our toes, can’t be having the
front three are set in stone, you buy from a position of strength.
think one of the edds said sane is looking to leave city because he can’t get game time, but for the last 2 seasons sane has put pressure on the likes of sterling and co, and that’s why city have had 2 unbelievable seasons, it’s called
competition for places, we can’t have our front 3 thinking there place is granted, that’s when you become complacent. before anyone mentions it we can’t rely on brewster who is a young lad coming back from a nasty injury, it will only take an injury from one of the front 3 and where in rubbish street.
you buy from a position of strength.

Agree4 Disagree2

27 Jun 2019 02:05:52
If Liverpool is still embroiled in 'tapping up' situations, that means they have not learned from their previous mistakes. I think the direction that Liverpool are heading now, after winning the CL, should be an attractive one to players. If we do things legally we should be able to get our prime targets and they'd be willing to come.

According to Melissa Reddy,

Adam Lallana has been told his versatility is needed next season.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Right - no effort is being made to sell Lallana or other senior players at this time.}

25 Jun 2019 19:10:19
Bench seat 1, bench seat 2, bench seat 3, bench seat 4, bench seat 5, bench seat 6, bench seat 7.

Arguably the most versatile player in our squad!

Thanks for the confirmation, Ed002.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2019 19:54:56
Hello ED002. With your knowledge within the footballing world, do you think it’s a wise choice Klopp and LFC seem to be taking, not investing in the squad and not looking to move on fringe players if possible like Lallana?
I understood it that the best time to improve is when on top, being most attractive at that point and not investing is standing still.

What’s your opinion on this situation?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The half a billion pounds that many supporters expect to be spent on adding depth to the squad is what I am trying to fight against at all times. The club will look to improve a little where they can and are seemingly more than happy to move on many of the youngsters. But if senior players are to be added then players in the squad need to be moved on. As I have said, I do expect a versatile attacking player to be a target and I expect cover to be provided elsewhere.}

25 Jun 2019 20:22:15
Thanks ED. I don’t disagree with your way of thinking about spending for the sake. I also think what we have was enough to have the season we had. Add Ox and hopefully a fitter Gomez and more settled Keita alongside any promoted young stars and should compete again. But I don’t really know enough about the workings of football. I trust Klopp and Edwards.
Did UTD or now City ever just try and go again with the same squad? Or just one additional starter coming in when they’re on top?

Which is the best way forward. Spurs did amazing without adding but ended with nothing to show? Tough call. Glad I don’t have to make it.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You make a good point about JG and AOC - they will be like two new players.}

25 Jun 2019 21:34:52
As well as JG, AOC, Fabs and Keita will both improve next season. I can also see Trent being even better and Firmino will have a better season. There is much growth and improvement from within. Just 2 senior players needed.

E002, long winded question/ observation here. With City virtually (or the legends being) having 2 quality players for each position, and players seemingly having no problems moving to them knowing this, one of the arguments against Liverpool continuing to invest heavy is that no quality player is going to move to Liverpool to sit on the bench for prolonged periods. While i'm not in the camp of spend, spend, spend, I'm failing to see why to this regard City would be seen as the more attractive option (knowing you may be benched for periods) than Liverpool.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I have explained the answer to this repeatedly. Manchester City has a lot of players who are not content. Liverpool supporters are jealous and obsess about Manchester City players and have no grasp of reality with the expectation that Mbappe will move to sit on the bench. It is pointless me explaining the same thing over and over again.}

26 Jun 2019 08:41:45
Gomez will have his work cut out for him. Matip was immense last season. I don't think people realise how good he actually is.

Agree5 Disagree0

26 Jun 2019 13:35:33
Clubs, in general, only actively try to sell senior players if they serve absolutely no purpose in the squad (a third choice left back, for example) . Lallana could feature in 15-20 games next season, whether starting or off the bench, so he serves a purpose to the squad.

It doesn't mean a bid won't be considered if it is made, just means he's not being transfer listed or hawked around other clubs.

If Lallana's not happy with his squad place, i'm sure his agent will try to encourage bids.

I love the Football Manager games, but I feel it has played a huge part in supporters wanting to replace all the squad players with people they consider slightly better every season.

Palace interested in Mignolet.

Any truth Ed002?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - They are looking for a number three so it is unlikely. Liverpool has priced him out of a move to Brugge, Bournemouth and Norwich who have all shown an interest.}

25 Jun 2019 12:22:10
Ed002,

I understand that right now we have priced clubs out from buying players but as the transfer window progresses will clubs be more willing to spend money to cover positions? We've seen before that Michael Edwards has sold players for a lot more than fans were expecting. Would you expect players like Mignolet and Clyne to leave still?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - If the club gets an acceptable offer and the player wants to make the move. If players are priced out of a move the clubs look elsewhere.}

25 Jun 2019 13:54:26
Do you think we should let him leave?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sepp van den Berg is the name lots of websites are reporting about at the moment. Eds, any truths in these reports?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I suspect there is. My notes are out of date but say: Sepp van den Berg (CB) Zwolle kiddie but being watched by a number of sides including PSV, Brighton, Ajax, Lille and Genk - Sampdoria have had a couple of offers rejected - Crystal Palace, Bayern Munich and Liverpool have enquired.}

Lots of pace as he used to be a winger before converting to a centre half. That will probably mean that he'll be able to play as an attacking full back too.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone convert directly from a winger to a centre half.

Sure, winger to full back; centre half to defensive mid; even full back to centre mid (ala Fabinho and Philip Lahm) ; but winger to centre half? never.

OGRed_Phil. I forgot the centre-half/ forward combo. There's quite a few examples. Chris Sutton was a classic example and regularly played both roles, and dare I mention him? Steven Caulker, haha.

Strikers and Centre Halves share a lot of the same attributes. I don't know if he ever played in defence but I'd imagine that Duncan Ferguson would have made a decent centre half.
