Andy Robertson scored a cracking goal for Scotland. Very composed finish. đź‘Ť.

Very impressed with the lad.
Hopefully he'll start against city I feel his defensive work will be needed. Also having two players if TAA plays then we have two players that can cross the ball which is certainly a weakness of Manchester city's in recent times.

I'd go for Robertson versus Citeh as I'd say he is slightly better defensively but still carries an attacking threat, plus his use of the ball was so impressive on debut. Citeh v Liverpool what a spectacle though I can't wait! Even the neutrals will be licking their lips!

I hope they do not put moreno on against Man City! Yes, i will be the first to say so far this season he hasn't been bad. but for sure against an attacking team like Man C, we need actual defenders and Robertson is far better than him.

Moreno starts against city for me. If he plays well then why drop him? . Not his biggest fan but hope he pushes on this year. Most of us are going to be waiting for him to make a balls of things but he deserves his in my opinion.

Eds,

Other than VVD, did Liverpool make any real efforts at signing other centre halfs this past window? If so, do you mind providing who? Personally I thought it was a good window, would've been great had a proper CB been signed. And I'm wondering if Klopp felt the need to improve this area of the squad but no one was available, or if VVD was chased as he specifically was wanted.

Thanks,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No, just a very low bid. Van Dijk was the wanted player.}

hi edd002 im just curious to why we didn't have a plan b like we had with salah when brandt wouldn't come. What was the reason we didn't move onto other targets? . was it just a case of we thought that southampton would eventually let him go which was clear way before deadline day they werent.

{Ed002's Note - That would be one for Klopp.}

01 Sep 2017 20:44:28
There was a lack of decent CBs available. Hence City going for Evans. Just be patient it's a marathon not a sprint and we are well placed with what we have.

Agree15 Disagree4

01 Sep 2017 21:53:52
Ings N Things, that's what I was getting at. Seems our lack of effort at signing a CB was due to a lack of availability of reliable options. I wouldn't quite say we are well placed with what we have though. Three senior CBs are all that are on the books (I'm not including Gomez as he hasn't had a true run there yet) . I still think our XI could compete with anyone, but we're an injury to Matip away from a slight crisis.

Agree4 Disagree6

01 Sep 2017 22:30:32
I don't understand this concept of seniority amongst our centre backs? We complain that Lovren and Klavan aren't good enough and yet Joe Gomez isn't classed as a senior because he hasn't had a run of games? Well which is preferable, someone you don't rate or someone you haven't yet?

Agree2 Disagree1

01 Sep 2017 22:54:24
It's obvious that klopp had his shopping list and he didn't want to settle for 2nd best.

I'm obviously abit concerned about us not getting a CB as we aren't going to be able to out score every team every game.

On the other hand though we haven't wasted money on a panic buy which is going to haunt us for years too come.

You look at the squad now and apart from a GK and CB back we are looking class.

Agree9 Disagree0

01 Sep 2017 22:59:37
It was similar last January when Klopp said, if the right player became available we would move for him. Not the next best, only the right player.

I think its good we have a manager who is strong enough to tell the clubs bosses and the transfer committee the players he wants.

Its probably where Rodgers was lacking a bit and let players he didn't want pushed on him by the money men.

We can see We are on the right track when TOP players are refusing Arsenal, City and Chelsea to sign for us or wait where they are until they can join us.

Im old enough to remember the good times under Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish and also the steady decline that ended with Hicks and Gillette nearly bankrupting the club.

This is the first time in many years that I feel we are the up and coming team, but it won't be all this year butits refreshing to know that Top players are waiting to come.

The owners are not a Cuuntry like qatar backing PSG or the Arabs at City and will not risk the clubs future in the transfer market but even the most negative fan has to see the new stand and all round mprovements everywhere.

Wow. there's a lot of games till jan and No guareentee VVD will still be adament on lfc move if SHFC say no to us. Then he will move chelsea in jan. I'm with you Lfcder. What excited me the most is the fact that Ox turned down the champions to join Liverpool. Keita willing to wait for a year to join, and Lemar snubbed Arsenal when at the same time Liverpool showed interest (he preferred Liverpool, right? ) . That is a really good sign. I don't like during the Rodgers era when he didn't manage to get his main targets, we ended up with whoever that were available, spend for the sake of spending, and it brought us nowhere.

The only thing dissappoints me is we couldn't get the replacement for Coutinho. Maybe I'm among the minority here (or maybe I am the only one), I read posts in Arsenal forum about Sanchez and couldn't help but to agree, what's the point of keeping a player that wants out. We might ended up better without him.

Agree4 Disagree1

02 Sep 2017 08:07:57
LFcder, no players were pushed on BR any money men (whoever these people are) . BR was in charge of the committee and had the final say on who we get and don't get. If BR lacked the bottle to put his foot down then that is his problem and not that of anyone else's. Klopp is in charge of the committee as well with consultation from Buvac (who recommended Grujic) and Kraveitz. He is stubborn and sure of himself, things BR severely lacked which is why he is respected and BR never was. This notion that BR was overruled by the money men or by the TC (which he heads) has been debunked since 2015 by Ed02 so people need to stop pushing this myth as none of it is true.

Agree2 Disagree0

02 Sep 2017 19:32:02
Thats exactly what I said.

Its probably where Rodgers went wrong.
There was at the time within FSG the 'moneyball' philosophy. Where the club would invest in players that would develop and to move on at a profit, if the club chose,
Origi, Coutinio, Ballotelli, Borinii, Aspas, Gomes lliori, and many more.

How many of them have had a positive affect on the first team.

Not many. and that's What I meant by money men having control as opposed to football men, as is the case now,
thankfully.

LFC should never have given Rodgers the job, they did so because he had history and Knowledge of youth set ups all round Europe from his time with Chelsea.

We have a strong manager now who knows what he wants snd will go get it if available,
if its not available he won't compromise but will work with what he has already as they are familiar with his requirements.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Sep 2017 07:54:14
I don't get this whole " no centre backs are/ were not available"

The recent issues at the back has been going on since BR's teunure. Klopp would have done his homework on this before he arrived but has still not fully addressed the issue since he arrived in Oct 2015.

Someone said previously klopp won't take second best and is happy to wait, well that's another load of rubbish too. He bought Klavan whom is no where near second best! What about Caulker? ill advised maybe but he should have known better and "waited"

If we can't get a decent CB then we need a new defensive coach to at least try anx work with what we have.

Agree1 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - Klavan is a back up, you can't get the best as a back up and he was deliberately chosen because he is strong and good in the air plus able to cover left back. There were no top class centre backs available, you might not get it, but it is true. If there were, do you think there would have been so many teams, including Man City and Arsenal, interested in Jonny Evans? Good as he is, he is a long way from a world class defender.}

03 Sep 2017 08:32:40
Thanks for the reply ED001.

If you read my post, I quote that klopp has been here since Oct 2015, he would have surely done his homework on the shambolic defence he took over from BR.

I read all your comments Ed"01 and have a hell of a lot of respect wkth what you day but I totally disagree with you regarding Klavan. If you're saying to me that Klavan has been the best available since Oct 2015 then sorry I don't buy that, back up or not

Watford away, I was at that game Ed 1 and Lovren was bullied all afternoon in the air, he couldn't cope. Why not bring on Klavan to deal with their powerful attackers?

We conceded 12 goals from set pieces alone last season. Klopp has had enough time to address this issue.

I'm not alone on this, just about every person I speak to can see the problems we have, why can't the scouting or the defensive coaches?

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - the scouts and the coaches do see it and are working on it. It is not as easy as clicking your fingers. As for what you are saying about Klavan, you can moan about him all you like, but how many other centre backs could cover left back at the time we bought him that were available to us? Since Oct 15, is irrelevant, we had Sakho before, so we were looking to upgrade on him, Matip was brought in for the right side to upgrade on Lovren. It should be Matip/Sakho as the first choice pairing, with Gomez/Klavan as the back ups.

As for Watford, it was the first game of the season, move on, it takes a while for teams to get going. 7 clean sheets in the last 9 Premier League games suggests there is improvement there defensively. Much better to take a longer view as one off games can be an aberration, such as the Watford one.}

03 Sep 2017 09:30:36
It's not just about clicking ones ED1, the coaches and scouts have had plenty of time since Klppps arrival to sort out the defence. We conceded 42 PL goals last season, most out of all the top 4. So have the other teams that conceded less not strengthen their defence because there was no one available?

Sakho was banned from March 2016 so the writing on the wall was from then and yes 2015 was relevant because we're no better than BR's defensive unit.

I'm not interested in having a poor defender in Klavan, that can cover LB and CB because it hasn't worked has it?

Did you watch the last game of the season against Boro? One of those last seven you mentioned. Thier attackers got goal side of Lovren at least 3 times, luckily woefull finishing meant we are in the CL places.

Did you also see how Hoffenheim calved us open time after time?

As much as it pains me, you watch how well United do this season with a solid defence.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - I watch every game, I also watch hundreds of other games a day and you are quite clearly of the opinion we are worse than everyone else and that no one else's defenders get caught out. Which suggests you need to watch more of other teams because it happens all the bloody time in the Prem, the defending is utter crap in 90% of games. The ones that do best defensively are Spurs, yet Vertonghen regularly gets caught out, it is just that they have a lot more protection from the midfield. They also have a keeper behind them that makes saves, rather than Mignolet. There is a lot more to it than just the defenders.

To be honest this conversation bores me because it is always the same hysterical bull with no balance. Whining on and on about Klavan is not going to change anything. Especially as your whines are so pathetic and just you calling him names. You never explain anything, just whinge. You don't explain why they were goalside of Lovren. Was he ballwatching? Was he trying to hold a line and they got caught out? Was it good play from the forward? Or do you not actually know and just want something to whine about?

As for Hoffenheim, we got carved open because both managers took a chance and gambled on being able to outscore the other. They were throwing extra bodies forward and Klopp was brave and kept his players high to catch them out on the break, believing we were better than them and so could outscore them with the gaps they were leaving. I think we can safely say he was right and it was a very enjoyable game because of that. Ok he could have kept you happy by doing a Jose and sitting all ten outfield players behind the ball and gone for a 0-0, but who wants to watch that?}

03 Sep 2017 10:38:48
So why are you ignoring the fact we conceded 42 goals last season? This has nothing to do with other teams, all I said was that we conceded more goals than other of the top 4 teams, that's the reality Ed1. Chelsea conceded 33 goals and won the league! So again Ed 1, why haven't we addressed the keeper situation or are you gong to say there were none available?

Whines? Actually Ed 1 if you care to look back on here regarding the Boro game you'll see I explained what happened with Lovren, after I returned from the match.
What names? Just because I call him a poor defender? Shall I send some cotton wool in the post? I didn't realise we were discussing each game in depth right now?

What a different conversation we'd be having had Hoffenhime been more clinical? Scored the penalty from Lovren's mistake?

What did Jose win in his first season playing boring football ? Two trophies and a route into Europe . We played lovely football going forward and what did we win? Who will be remembered?

You want to talk about Whining Ed 1? Come and sit with me on the Kop, listen to the radio Merseyside phone phone in in the way home. Bring your pacemaker, you'll have heart failure.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I can't be arsed, you have nothing of interest to say, nothing new, no insight, you can't even understand anyone else's point just shout about the same old things. Carry on whining it is obviously the only thing that makes you happy is unconstructive criticism.}

03 Sep 2017 11:01:27
Me neither Ed 1.

I see far more watching the back 4 when it's live.

This conversation is to do with our failure to sign a decent centre half durng his appointment at LFC.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it really depends, if you had access to the scouting sites, you would see even more. You can watch it over and over again from multiple angles. It makes a huge difference.

The conversation is just pointless, no one signed a top class centre half other than one going to Milan. There are very few of them available and each one had 10s of suitors after them if they did. It says a lot that so many were after VVD and Jonny Evans, neither of which are top class. There just aren't many around which is why teams are taking chances on players like Bailly and Lindelof in the hope of getting lucky and they work out. We already have one player in that mould in Gomez, that is intended to be gradually fed in, so we couldn't go and get another without blocking his route. It is a long term view Klopp is taking, it is how he works. There is none of this buying a quick fix, he always wants to look at building for the future.

We have 2 decent centre halves, we don't need a decent centre half now, we need a better centre half and that is the issue, they are all just decent or unavailable. No point buying to stand still with players that are only of equal quality. Better to develop Gomez, who is expected to be far better than decent.}

03 Sep 2017 15:04:22
Interestingly enough, I think Bailey and Keane ( now at Everton ) are better than both Klavan and Lovren. I only see our CB's live and the errors they make, so full judgment based on seeing the other two live only twice a season is difficult.

I will agree with you regarding Gomez, he looked very composed before he got injured and also the appearances he's made this season. He's not rash on the ball and will try and bring the ball down, chested or otherwise, and puck a pass, as apposed to just heading the ball back to the opposition or no mans land when it comes to him.

Again I agree we need better but we've needed better form when klopp started. For me, Matip is the only one I'd keep out of the three. Conceding 12 goals last season from set pieces is not good enough. Now is that zonal marking? For me it's a mixture of Zonal marking and individual errors.

We are never going to win anything unless we dramatically improve at the back, be it be new personal or better coaching. This has been proven since the BR days and has filtered through to klopps reign. We have won nothing.

I'm fully behind building for the future but as it stands, under klopp, we have improved our strengths but not our weaknesses.

Agree0 Disagree2

03 Sep 2017 18:45:19
I think Klopp has improved on Skrtel with Matip and improved on an old Toure with a younger Klavan who is nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe. If he was Russian/ German/ French/ Spanish/ Argentinan nobody would moan as much about him.
So that's 2 he's improved on in less than 2 full years, have some patience man this isn't a video game.

I personally don't rate Keane as a centre back, he is awkward on the ball and doesn't really have a lot of pace.

Given that we missed out on VVD, I would like to see Gomes getting games above Klavan and if he does well, then the first choice partnership should be Gomes and Matip.

Gomes has a lot to offer, he is very quick, good in the air, physically imposing, confident with the ball at his feet and he appears to be defensively very sound (there are many better judges than us who rate him very very highly) . The only question mark is experience and if he has recovered fully from injury, which you can only answer the experience question with playing games and sticking by him and the injury issue can only be answered by the medical staff and playing time.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Sep 2017 02:30:32
It's so refreshing to read that reply from Ed001 about the defender situation! Our centre backs actually do quite well compared to the rest of the league, but there's more to defence than the centre backs. Not to mention, the set pieces are almost exclusively conceded because of individual errors from the midfielders or strikers not doing their role.

Also our playing style means we need to be disciplined in midfield and most of the time we get caught out is because a mistake there exposed us. Any game plan that involves constantly putting our centre halves in one on one situations, especially against quick players, is always going to be a roll of the dice. I'd go as far to say that Lovren is one of the best in the league for those situations. In a normal backline it's risky defending but when you're exposed so often it's necessary. The amount of times he's had to make a block or interception to prevent an almost certain goal is way too high, and 95% of the time it's not his doing that puts him in that situation.

Defending for Liverpool is harder than for just about any other team so there's no point bringing in a defender who does well in an easier setup. If it's not a clear upgrade, we're wasting our time. We've done well this window, and on top of that we've made a statement. Now we just need to perform on the pitch and by next season can genuinely be seen as an elite European club again.
