Hey think this could be one for ed002 if you don't want to answer/get into it I completely understand and no need to post if you don't feel either!
Well with all the commercialism in football now and new tv deal etc I was wondering what the future holds and do you see in the future clubs essentially privatizing broadcasting of games? Especially if the European league breaks out or would this go against whatever regulations are in place? I know barca and Madrid are the famous examples of negotiating their own deal but could we see the day for example where lfc tv have the sole broadcasting rights to Liverpool games and a subscription/ pay per view model put in place?
Secondly if the above is not feasible as I feel it probably wouldn't be what would happen in terms of broadcasting were a European league to break out. Would all clubs negotiate privately ala Madrid and Barcelona or would their again be fixed broadcasting in place or is this a bridge that will be crossed closer to the time?
Finally is there a large disparity between deals barca and Madrid have in place and the new premier league tv deal or is this gap being closed?

(1) To some extent this would be dependent on when the pan-European League happens. At a recent meeting in Monaco a proposal by two clubs to begin in 2018 only received support from one other side – the others in general voted against it with either one or two abstaining. This though may simply have been posturing as they look to a more realistic date of 2022. Because of the World Cup and the general mess with high-end sponsors related to the WC and on-going issues at FIFA, the original pencilled in date of 2027 is back on the table. There will be a couple more meetings this season. A date has been set in April and I rather suspect that the clubs involved in these discussions will look for another meeting in mid-December. Do not under estimate the value of foreign television money to the European leagues.
(2) There is every likelihood that the big money from television, other media, sponsorship etc. would go with a breakaway league. It would completely rupture the operations of UEFA and I would expect it would require national associations like the FA to restructure their leagues. Nobody wants this but it is the eventual consequence I would expect. As a result there would certainly be a step change in the way clubs capture their media income. Two EPL clubs (Arsenal and Liverpool) have already investigated, and probably continue to investigate, the streaming type options for games. Whilst they cannot do it in real-time right now, in the future the chance may well be there to do that. Both clubs have media exploitation expertise within their existing senior management structures – but both will also be aware of the damage being done to the clubs by the illegal “free” internet providers. So in the longer term, I would think that there will be more options to watch games live – either through existing/revised media deals or through the clubs providing that service themselves. In all probability it would be far more cost effective and beneficial to do it through the likes of a television company, perhaps as a partner. Clubs on their own do not have the broadcast capabilities, nor equipment and facilities necessary to do this easily on their own and it would seem likely they would seek a media partner rather than go in to the broadcasting business.
(3) The television deals in Spain have been renegotiated and eventually if nothing changes then the gap between what Real Madrid and Barcelona have in income and the English sides will disappear. However, regardless of the new agreement kicking in during next season in Spain, there is a caveat that means all sides will earn at least what they did last season (it might be this season, I would need to check) for six more seasons – this was reluctantly accepted by the other clubs simply to push through the deal. However, the only clubs protected by it are the only two that would potentially lose money – Real Madrid and Barcelona.
(4) Meetings have been held including representatives of the French FFF and Spanish RFEF to discuss their concerns over the new EPL television deal and the deal Real Madrid and Barcelona has in Spain. They approached UEFA with a view to capping TV/media income in the same way as commercial sponsorship for the purposes of FFP. No resolution is in place. This upsets EPL clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona. The others will get support from other nations such as Germany and the Netherlands should they ask for it – and even Italy which has the second highest income but a rupturing financial structure for all but 6 or 8 sides. The further complication relates to what happens when the breakaway clubs run for the pan-European league. The Spanish club know that opens up the Real Madrid and Barcelona second string sides to La Liga - so they want assurances that they can only use the extant stadia, and not the main stadia, and the television rights will then be shared equally - regardless (the agreed plan right now is not dissimilar to the English deal for their National income which are divided (1) 50% equally between clubs, (2) 25% for those clubs hosting live matches, (3) 25% based on performance (league position). The international broadcast monies are divided (3) 100% equally between the clubs.. This has been raised in a meeting of the breakaway sides in Monte Carlo last year with UEFA present and an unbiased journalist sat in to moderate - at the agreement of all parties. It remains partially resolved only.
From this you may just be able to figure out the names of the two clubs looking to accelerate the pan-European league breakaway.

I don't think the break away league will work as fan interest will not be as great, European football can be very dour and not sure it will fill stadiums, it will destroy football.

I couldn't agree more Mighty reds. One of the reasons football has become a global sport is because it is played in so many different countries with each having its own style. Fast paced, direct, athletic, technical, hoof-ball etc. and combinations of such styles. Everyone can find a league where football is played just the way they like it.

Not sure my thanks went through but if not again seriously appreciated ed! And also as a follow on is their a potential for premier league games to be played abroad in the nearer future possibly America? I think mourinho was talking about how he would support this recently. Not sure many teams would be happy with it myself especially smaller sides and surely would be very limited as to when it would be possible with all the midweek football as you couldn't make a team play Saturday in New York and Wednesday or Thursday in Russia!

Hope you don't mind me annoying you now but would that be with agreement from the team's or would it be enforced that 1 a season had to be abroad? Could any team refuse to play a match abroad and how would that go down?
{Ed002's Note - I don't see it happening but the agreement would be with the FA and the Premier League and it is fraught with insurance and other issues. If it goes ahead the teams will have to play it.}
