Atalanta in Europa League quarters. Hopefully on of easier opponents we could face.

15 Mar 2024 12:53:14
Atalanta are no mugs.

The only team I wanted to avoid is Roma because of their ultras. Not worth the trouble. It actually annoys me that they are allowed to continue in the tournament after consistent issues.

Agree14

15 Mar 2024 12:54:57
Jürgen V Alonso in the final could have a great story behind it.

Agree8

15 Mar 2024 13:14:04
Be good to see how alonso does against wet spam.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 13:27:36
Liverpool should be destroying this competition, no matter who we face. Atalanta are not the tricky, sleek team they were from 2018-2021 when they had Ilicic and Gomez causing chaos. They also can’t defend.
As the Sparta Prague manager classily pointed out yesterday, Liverpool are a high-level Champions League team playing at a much higher level than the other teams in this competition. No excuses for not winning it.

Agree11

15 Mar 2024 13:34:37
Leverkusen are not getting to the final they barely beat Qarabag, reckon West Ham will beat them tbh.

Agree5

15 Mar 2024 14:20:21
@Kloppers, i do share your view point. Leverkusen could actually underestimate west ham. West ham is playing top football by the way they crush Freiburg. Will be real test for Leverkusen.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 15:26:30
Leek, top football? West Ham? Have you seen their last several games in the PL where many of their fans wanted (and still want) Moyes gone? Miss me with that stuff, man. Top football and WH in the same sentence is the stuff of pure comedy.

As fo Atalanta, we could have gotten Milan or Roma so I'll take it. We play up to our potential, we beat them and go thru.

Agree7

15 Mar 2024 15:36:44
Agree with everything you've said there, OliRed.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 15:53:51
OliRed watch West Ham closer, when Paqueta plays they play. No coincidence their form dropped this season whilst he was unavailable.

Some feckless performances this season no doubt but any team with Paqueta, Bowen and Kudos playing can cause teams huge problems. Leverkusen have been superlative all season but are not infallible, West Ham I believe have won 26/ 28 of their last European matches. Highly unlikely it will be a procession and should be a good tie.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 16:31:33
Any of the teams left could beat any other on a given day.

Over 2 legs though is there anyone left that could beat Liverpool? I don’t think so.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 16:47:37
Big Jorg, I fully agree with you on the Paqueta being absent and all that BUT to say that WH has been playing top footie is just porkies, man. Have they had good performances? yeas. Have they had wretched ones? ABsolutely. Vs Arsenal (6-0), Nott. Forest (5-0) and at Fulham (5-0). Did I also mention vs LFC (5-1 and 3-1)?

That ain't top football by any stretch when you get battered by near tennis scores once in a while. Vs Leverkusen? It will be a great tie and Im looking forward to him.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 16:56:21
I agree with that BP, I don't think any of teams left will beat us over 2 legs but a final a different story, 1 off game anything can happen. Good draw for us overall, although as far as winning it goes we probably better off playing leverkusan in quater final rather than a final as they be possibly distracted with closing out bundesliga title win. By time final is on they probably have it won.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 17:17:46
We’ll win this Europa League with ease if we want.
Only way we don’t, is if we literally Chuck it because we focus on other competitions.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 17:58:17
I'd quite like to see us hit double digits against Rome, just to teach their ultras a lesson.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 18:56:52
@Lowel, I totally agree with you - what’s the need in playing any of the games ? We are far, far better than any of the other teams left in it. I’ve actually just written to UEFA pointing this out and have asked them just to send the trophy over to Anfield as early as possible next week.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 19:28:26
I can see a Liverpool vs West Ham final tbh. Paqueta is back fit and they’re pretty resilient in European matches.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 19:33:36
Leverkusen with batter West Ham this way and that way.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 20:37:33
Agree with Lowe. I take nothing for granted, but I think I will be a bit disappointed if we don't add this to Klopps trophy haul.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 23:13:46
We'll win this trophy, I have no doubts about it. We're so strong this season, no team will come close. Leverkusen deserve respect, they've done very well this season and I think they'll have enough to get into the final vs us.

Agree0

16 Mar 2024 06:30:04
Salah - Agreed on all points. Liverpool have coped quite remarkably with the injury crisis that would have ruined the seasons of pretty much every other team in the league. A lot of that is down to Jurgen Klopp, but it must be said our squad is packed with amazing technical quality. Though I doubt Alisson will play again until August, I think the injuries we have sustained in 2024 may turn out to give us the vital energy boost we’ll need to win 2 or 3 trophies this season.

Agree0

14 Mar 2024 19:21:02
Why can't VAR work for the referee on the pitch instead of them dictating what should and shouldn't be looked at? The ref should be able to say, can you get that up for me on screen so I can have a look before I make a decision. And vice versa the VAR should say at times you might want to look at that without making any decision themselves.

The games played at 100 miles an hour the refs cannot see everything that happens but VAR shouldn't be making the decision for the ref either. Its a obvious and simple solution.

14 Mar 2024 20:41:05
it's because the game is fast that they don't have time to second-guess every decision mate.

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 21:09:06
@K-86, it's cos the system is deliberately not set up to do the things you are saying hence, not set up with rational, a goal and desire to make things better.

Howard Webb told us wht VAR is supposed to do, based on the setup during his last apology tour (telling us that Odegaard doing his best Steph Curry impression in the box should have been a pen) as in, "Corroborate the on pitch decision of the ref" even if/ when it is wrong according to the actual rules governing the actual incident. The City game last week is your latest example. The Odegaard example is another one.

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 22:19:55
Because the game is corrupt. It's so obvious. Just like every other game or authoritative organisation in the land. I watch football for entertainment purposes only. A bit like WWE. You know its BS but you watch it anyway.

Agree6

14 Mar 2024 22:23:25
what do you guys expect here? Like if the ref waves play on do you expect them to blow the game up and say 'hold on lads, just need to double check something'?

It's not realistic.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 06:52:09
The only thing I think is corrupt are the players and their behaviour on the pitch. The constant play acting and cheating to gain the slightest advantage. All this moaning about the refs but no regard whatsoever with what they have to deal with on the pitch every game and that certainly includes Liverpool players.
Maybe that might be a good place to start when we talk about the downfall of the game🤔.

Agree5

15 Mar 2024 08:21:22
As far as diving and getting in the refs face i think were one the teams who avoid it more than most. if that was a city player looking for a peno like the Doku tackle on Sunday the whole team would have surrounded the ref.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 08:33:42
Let the referee do his job and give each team a few challenges and the get VAR involved then. They retain the challenge if they are correct and lose it if wrong, it works a lot better in rugby league, not perfect but better.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 12:59:14
Logan - would you have just the challenge? Cos obvs the TMO in rugby League gets involved in far more than just when captain challenges a call.

Agree0

15 Mar 2024 15:31:33
Faithworks, that literally happened away at Palace when Andy Madley was called to the monitor TWO minutes after the fact to check and confirm the awarding of a penalty to Palace on the tackle from Quansah on Mateta.

That scenario has not happened to ANY team neither before nor after that. Again, I'm just saying what people did and what happened. Nothing more.

Agree0

15 Mar 2024 18:20:04
Yes I would Faith, unless there is serious foul play. There is a time limit on how quickly you can challenge in league too, so 2 mins later wouldn’t be allowed.

Agree0

15 Mar 2024 19:51:07
When we have refs heading off to work their nixers in the home of the owners of Manchester City for very large sums of money and PGMOL giving them their backing, it says everything really.

Agree0

16 Mar 2024 05:35:00
The VAR team should just be instructed to make the right call, regardless of ref's decision.

I don't actually think it's corrupt. But unconscious bias is strong-- there have been numerous studies about race and refereeing, for example, and people tend to very slightly favor members of their own race. They are probably not doing this on purpose.

Furthermore, there's another human bias where not doing something is safer than doing something. In The Trolley problem, for example, people are generally ok if the trolley runs over one person instead of a bunch, but ask them to shove another person so that person dies, saving ten, and they won't do it. This is, I think, applicable to referees making penalty decisions late in games. The notion that they "shouldn't decide a game" punishes them for blowing a whistle but imagines that they aren't deciding the game when they don't make the call.

Referees should for sure be trained in this stuff and instructed to try and overcome it.

Hi current contract is up to 2026.

That's weird, my mate messaged me the same thing yesterday after reading an article online. He then messaged again saying the article was 2 years old.

I'm afraid there's no going back on this one.

I heard and read that Klopp and Edwards didn't see eye to eye on a number of things, hence one of the reasons why Edwards left,
sadly, Klopp is leaving the building, we have to move on .
the process has started, its going to be really exciting, don't think City will be that strong next season, but we definitely will .

Got me in stitches there, @Faith. Can we all take Klopp at his word and move on?

Agree0

15 Mar 2024 00:49:25
Ye Oli, at this stage it’s look almost silly on Klopp to make a U-turn lol.

Just rewatching highlights from 15 years ago with Torres nicking the ball off of Vidic. Got me thinking, has there ever been a greater mismatch. Torres always had him in his pocket and Vidic got sent off numerous times. Hilarious.

14 Mar 2024 14:26:11
I used to hated seeing carra against drogba tbh - but surely award goes to Rudy at Norwich? Suarez used to traumatise him when he was in goal for them…poor lad.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 15:09:17
Carra vs Thierry Henry was simply not fair. You can also add Phillipe Senderos to one of Drogba's victims. Some mismatch that was. All Drogba had to do was make eye contact with Senderos and his head was gone.

Agree6

14 Mar 2024 21:43:52
Remember Ashley Cole having CR7s number when they played each other or bale destroying maicons aura as a world class rb…. Testament to quality of VVD and Salah in they consistently are able to do what they do best against majority of players they face.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 22:20:51
Bruno Fernandes v groundsman
Old Trafford groundsman missed a section of grass causing Bruno to complete a reverse 2 1/ 2 somersault with a 1/ 2 twist while in the pike position.
Complete mismatch.

Agree7

15 Mar 2024 00:32:14
I always found Drogba incredibly overrated to be honest. Turned up in a few big games which is what he's remembered for.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 02:58:37
Think you either misremembering or didn’t watch him enough Babbitty, not only did Drogba score goals and terrorize defences, he was the focal point of their attack and linked up their play. Incredible player in my opinion, and I used to hate it anytime he was up against Carragher as he would just dominate.

Agree7

15 Mar 2024 07:10:21
Drogba didn't have the best of starts at Chelsea from what I remember, but boy oh boy he soon turned that around.
Same as Seano, my strongest memories of him were just bullying Carra. And NOBODY did that.
Immense player for Chelsea, never in dispute.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 08:03:52
Babbitty, Drogba’s scoring record in his first stint at Chelsea is one goal for every two games played. That’s pretty good IMO.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 16:29:58
Drogba's record was less than one in two. 100 in 226 in the league and 157 in 341 all comps. For a number 9 at a big club, that's respectable but not jaw-dropping. I remember several times Chelsea either trying to replace him or bring in a "better" striker like Shevchenko in 2006, Anelka in 2008 and Torres in 2011. My point is there were a few times when Chelsea thought he could be upgraded upon. I also remember his legend status went up a notch in 2012 after his exploits in the Champions League and FA Cup. I remember him as a decent striker who was handful and turned up in big games but I certainly wouldn't put him in the world-class category.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 20:02:12
Drogba was a brilliant striker in his prime and I would have loved him at Liverpool.

Agree1

14 Mar 2024 10:42:03
Ed001 mate is Quansah a player the club expected to be playing first team football for us in cup games etc this season or was he going out on loan. Crazy how an injury to Matip has just fast tracked his career and looks the real deal.

{Ed001's Note - the plan was always to look at him in preseason and make a decision. He did so well in preseason that it was decided to bring him into the first team rather than send him out on loan. I think the idea was to have him replace Matip when his contract expires in the summer though, it has just been moved forward due to the injury.}

14 Mar 2024 11:04:28
He's doing brilliantly so far from what I've seen. Arguably better than Matip yet still only 21. Keep it up Jarell and keep learning from the master alongside you.

We've been lucky he's stepped up this season - I really rate Konate but he seems to struggle to put a long run of games together. Still only 24 though so plenty time to sort that out!

Agree10

14 Mar 2024 11:59:51
Think he has been a revelation maybe now we have a class of 24 like the mancs class of 99? Wouldn’t go as far as to say he is better than Matip tho atm. Close tho the lads been brilliant.

Agree5

14 Mar 2024 12:18:58
Centre back is not an easy position for a young player to step into at a club the size of Liverpool. He is an exceptional talent. Super excited to see what he can become.

Agree5

14 Mar 2024 13:48:09
The lad really is making a name for himself. Thankfully we didn't send him out on loan, he's solid and I see him being so important in the future. This season he's just getting into the swing of things, next season he's all in. Good luck to the lad, if he stays injury free and keeps a level head he's laughing.

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 15:14:02
he seems like the perfect replacement for Matip. He's even had flashes of those galivanting runs into the box.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 15:39:41
Our young men have really stood up to be counted when needed this season, but in my eyes the one that allows us to play is Endo, he's the one player that gives other the freedom to play.
Under the raidar of most of the media and some of the fans.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 15:50:34
Plus he is only going to get better and better, when he fills out a bit more, he will be a big unit .

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 18:15:55
If Quansah can find an extra yard of pace he’ll be class. We still probably need another CB in the summer with Matip leaving and Konate injury prone though. I’d sign a young left footed CB, and a young attacking left back to hopefully take over from Robertson / Gomez in a few years, Tsimikas should be sold.

Will then have a defence of:
CBs - Virg, Konate, New CB, Quansah, Gomez
RBs - Bradley, Trent, Gomez
LBs - Robbo, Gomez, New LB

Good cover there with Gomez being able to play everywhere. Would be interesting to see if Chambers / Beck could take up the young LB role in pre season.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 02:46:24
Jarell isn't better than Matip but he definitely shows more promise than Williams and Philips.

Does the Manchester United Squad Size Matter?

14 Mar 2024 07:39:01
{Ed's Note - Shappy has posted a new article entitled, Does the Manchester United Squad Size Matter?

14 Mar 2024 08:51:33
Surely it’s about quality not size, or so I’m told.

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 10:38:50
I usually find your articles a bit too rose-tinted for my liking Shappy, but I actually agree with you entirely on this one.

While the quality is still lacking for a team with United's ambitions, having such a large squad means that as far as atmosphere around the playing staff goes, it is probably lower than it should be when things are going well (too many players not getting a game, not feeling part of it) and considerably lower when things are not going well (more people feeling miserable means it's harder to lift the mood), and I agree that it's difficult to foster a "one for all" mentality when there's so many ones!

Not that i'm complaining, mind you. :)

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 20:06:52
11 years since Utd won the title, never thought I’d be saying that a few years ago. Their fans are quiet these days that’s for sure! Long may it continue.

Agree0

14 Mar 2024 05:47:33
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned on here so I'll ask the question.

What the (. ) is up with Kyle Walker and Sky airing that interview where Walker praises the ref Oliver in how he handled the LVC vs City match.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

How is this type of thing even allowed. it just smacks of pure bias and entitlement.

14 Mar 2024 07:44:31
I dunno but I thought his “great” defending got exposed for what it really is - great recovery pace. The actual defending bit got found out multiple times.

Agree7

{Ed001's Note - I never knew anyone considered him a great defender. I have always read comments about how he is crap just incredibly quick. Even back when he was at Spurs. I can't believe anyone considers him to be a top class defender.}

14 Mar 2024 08:52:57
Apart from Gareth. He seems to rate him.

Agree6

14 Mar 2024 09:22:54
Ed1, Rio Ferdinand called him the best RB in PL history in his own podcast or whatever online show he did few days ago. Talk about delusional.

Agree0

{Ed001's Note - Rio is a moron. Great defender in his day, but he is clueless. Walker isn't even the best right-back in Spurs' or City's PL history ffs.}

14 Mar 2024 09:29:55
And Paul Merson, who thinks England are odds-on favourites to win the Euros.

To be fair Merson probably stumbled across a lost cache of personality powder. Southgate doesn’t have that excuse in his locker.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 10:10:17
JLC, I think they did the interview to get clicks and reactions from the fans and online likes. And even in the interview, Walker in his body language awhen he was asked about the pen incident, looked so uneasy and tentative and then, the nonsensical praise comes out his mouth. You could tell he himself didn't believe the dust he was spouting.

The fact that anyone ever thought that Walker is a good defender is a problem in it of itself cos that guy is absolutely crap. ot his (and has been getting) his arse handed to him by Diaz and frankly, by any other wide man with the guts to go at him all season and not surprised at all. Take his pace away and trust me, not sure he would even have a career, IMO.

Agree2

14 Mar 2024 12:07:17
He wasn’t the best right back on Sunday.

Agree3

14 Mar 2024 12:12:12
I give up with listening to what anyone has to say or at least taking any notice of them. Not one of these pundits is impartial and Sky Sports is owned by Manchester Utd. Yesterday Sky Sports spent all day banging on about Mainoo hopefully being able to play for England. He is nowhere near good enough for that yet and would be back of a long Queue of players. If only there was a channel you could just watch the match and cut out all the pathetic waffle. So Sky own Man Utd and Man City use oil bribes to stay relevant.

As a Liverpool you should really have learnt by now that no one wants us to succeed and any success will be swept under the carpet ASAP so outlets can focus on Man Utd. We as a club are a true case of us against the world something Klopp has had to learn the hard way in many cases but ultimately embrace the hate and turn it back on the haters ten fold.

My advice would be to not take any notice of these agenda driven media outlets as they will try to turn fact into fiction for the purpose of entertainment and viewing figures. Journalism is a dead format in any form in the modern world as it will always be twisted to suit the narrative preferred by the sponsored media agency. Know what you see and believe and ignore all other noise as just that noise. On a side note that Shay Given is a tool isn’t he how does he get on TV anyway he was a tragic player and is an even more tragic human being.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 02:54:37
Point taken regarding Walker but Rashford literally just gave up against him so he can't be that bad.
