What’s everyone’s take on the Champions League draw and the potential to affect Arsenal and City’s Prem form?

Going deep in Euro competition is what good teams do but having 2 tough games each in the quarterfinals and then potentially playing each other twice more in the semi could take its toll, mentally and physically. They play each other next in the Prem too…gonna be an interesting few weeks.

So hoping we play well against United on Sunday and earn Klopp and the lads another day out at Wembley. The lads look on fire at the moment and Ali, Trent and Jota should be back to help out soon.

Loving this season and see no reason not to have high hopes for the next few with our squad and the solid philosophy left by Klopp.

16 Mar 2024 07:45:39
Apart from the intensity it’s also the negative mindset and disappointment if you lose. It’s a bold statement but I’d go as far to say that if they play each other, whichever team loses won’t win the title.

16 Mar 2024 09:26:09
Just a shame they didn’t meet in the quarters as they would have played 3 times in 2 weeks and that would have really took a toll on them .

Looking at the fixtures, I think it'll hit arsenal more than city. City have Luton at home in between, can rest some players, but they're away to Tottenham after the 2nd leg. Arsenal have Brighton away and then Villa, 2 tough games. Ideal scenario, arsenal best city when they play them, and then drop points during the euro game period.

Hello ed1. What's your opinion on konate? By that I mean he's undoubtedly a v good player but he so injury prone constantly picking up niggles that tends to keep him out 3-4 weeks at a time. He can't play 3 games a week and I don't think ever he will ever be fit to do it. I think we need to buy a cb this summer anyway as we be in champ league and vvd will be going 33 so can't be expected to play all the time. i think we seeing benefit now of vvd not playing v much European or cup football in 1st half of season, he flying at min.
Do we just accept konate plays once a week or do we try and sell him and try to get somebody else in.

{Ed001's Note - for now I think we stick with him as he is such a good 1v1 defender. We need one more centre back anyway, so get that for the left and hold onto Konate until we can sort out Virgil's long term replacement and Salah's too.}

16 Mar 2024 08:23:07
Quansah and Gomez do such a good job covering then I don’t see the issue really.
I think a left sided CB is really important this summer, especially if Alonso comes in and we go to a back 3.

Klopp has tried to manage Ibou this season by not playing him more than once a week but he's still picking up knocks. Frustrating.

With Matip leaving, it's obvious we'll need to bring in another this summer. The good thing is that Quansah's development means we don't need two.

I know there's a lot of competition for him from PSG and Real but Leny Yoro would be the centreback signing I would be prioritising this summer.

I'd love Branthwaite but it will never happen because Everton.

Agree1

16 Mar 2024 13:59:14
Branthwaite would be my choice as well. Doubt everton would sell to us when he will have plenty of suitors willing to buy him.

Just touching on what you mentioned Ed001, do you reckon Virg has a few more years ahead of him? The captaincy seems to have given him an extra lift I think. Good for maybe 2 years?

Agree1

{Ed001's Note - quite possibly yes.}

16 Mar 2024 16:42:54
If you are our newly minted Sporting Director Ed, would you give him a 2 year extension mate?

Agree0

{Ed001's Note - depends on the terms it was on. Yes if a lower basic. Happy to give a higher win bonus etc if he is on the team to balance it out but then if he does fade it doesn't leave us stuck like we could have ended up with Henderson and Fabinho. Only the Sauds won't bail us out every summer.}

16 Mar 2024 19:37:28
Replacing, or preparing to replace, VVD has to be the top priority this summer. Even when he was rubbish last year he was still our best defender. Salah and Alison are incredible and thoughts need to be had about their long term replacements as well, but the last month or so proves we can manage without them. We don't win jack squat without VVD this year in my opinion, that's how highly I rate him. Klopp's most vital signing for me by a mile.

We are the best behaved team all around and the Ref gets it easy from our players. Other teams act poorly and with disdain to the point of embarrassment. Our players know the agenda and deal with it accordingly by winning football matches. It is really only our fans who moan and whine still for days afterwards when the players forget the way they were wronged as soon as the final whistle is blown.

16 Mar 2024 00:01:58
Im sure Diaz and co just forgot about losing to Spurs by abominable officiating as soon as the match was over. Im sure Curtis Jones was very philosophical about being red-carded for next to nothing. And when VVD was poleaxed by Pickford he probably lay in his hospital bed and thought ‘ah well, these things happen’.
Players and managers get fined for criticising refereeing decisions. Just because they are not verbalising their dissatisfaction in public, it doesn't mean the players ‘forget the way they were wronged as soon as the final whistle is blown’. The team’s conduct on the pitch is far better than most - especially the Manchester teams - but you can't tell me they don't throw their boots at the changing room wall and post their complaints anonymously online.

Agree4

16 Mar 2024 00:20:48
Im not sure about the facts around this lol but I’d be on board if you’re saying we’re the least complainery 🤣🤣🤣
Also didn’t Klopp get yellow carded last game for dissent!?

Agree0

16 Mar 2024 05:00:03
Us fans make up for the perceived lack of complaining from the players!

Let them to the talking on the field and we'll do the talking off the field

🤣.

@NBG, I beg to differ - what did VVD (the club captain) get sent off for earlier this season? Not sure what the point you are trying to is.

Agree1

16 Mar 2024 09:28:32
I think that was a massive learning curve from virg the sending off and I think he’s better from it . He’s been impeccable since.

What do you think will be Edward's role and what all positions is he looking forward to fill aside from the obvious DOF and Manager roles?

15 Mar 2024 16:57:49
Hello ed1 hope u well. What do u think of Bobby Clark now that he has played a few games? Looks v good player to me, bit of everything in his game.

{Ed001's Note - he is very good, but he has a lot of work left to do to push into the picture when everyone is fit. He lacks physicality at the moment, though he does try to get stuck in to make up for it.}

15 Mar 2024 18:30:39
Bobby looks a tidy player needs to keep progressing and bulk up slightly, maybe like Salah will had to bulk up. Other than that very Happy for the lad.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 19:20:06
Have you been impressed by Elliot this season Ed? I've honestly been impressed by him this season. When everyone else is injured, he stepped up and perform very well as a midfielder and RW. Crazy that he is only 20 and already played more than 100+ games for us. He is going to be a very good player for us.

Agree5

{Ed001's Note - I love him personally and he is getting better and better as the season goes on. We have a gem there with a great attitude to the game.}

15 Mar 2024 19:31:46
Effort and bottle can go along way Ed.

You can always bulk up to an extent. Having that bit of grit about you isn’t necessarily as easy to come by.

Agree5

{Ed001's Note - I agree but there would be no point in me saying he is perfect when that is the clear big weakness in his make up right now.}

15 Mar 2024 20:24:36
What do you think to McConnell Ed? Obviously haven't seen much of him and he keeps it simple, but if nothing else he looks a bit of a unit.

Agree1

{Ed001's Note - I like him, he is closer to the finished article than Clark, though a different type of player.}

16 Mar 2024 00:22:16
Clark has bags of potential for me. Isn’t he 19 still? Scored a European goal at anfield?! Good vibes.
Obviously not perfect but has lots of time to be the best version of himself. Like, he literally has years to go and I hope he does it all with us.

Agree2

16 Mar 2024 06:51:59
I think Elliot is awesome but I do fear he still doesn’t really have a position, I know that a weird think to say after 100 games but I’m still not sure he is a right mid Or right of a front 3 like salah. I might be mis-remembering but my view of him in those 3 or 4 games back in 2021 before the ankle dislocation were his best, I just thought the chemistry with Trent and salah was amazing and I think he lost something then. Don’t get me wrong I think he’s great can play and play for another 10 years or more but I wonder is there another line up where we get more from him. What do other think?

Agree0

16 Mar 2024 07:22:28
ED1 would love your view on this.

I’ve changed my view on Elliott. Very early on I said I felt his lack of blistering pace meant he couldn’t play RW to the highest level but he’s not that type of winger and plays it more like Diaz does these days. Tricky, linking play, fully of energy and less about beating the man on the outside.

It’s almost the opposite to when we had Mane and Bobby. Mane and salah would use pace and stretch the defence and Bobby would link up now Nunez stretches the defence and Diaz and Mo/ Elliott do a lot of the link up play.

I think it works well and the results are proving that as still scoring plenty of goals.

Thoughts?

Agree0

{Ed001's Note - I agree completely. We have a good mix of players now and it works well. Jota can also be that ball in behind through the centre to allow wide players to be links. I do think Elliott is better slightly deeper though.}

16 Mar 2024 09:37:28
Elliot and Joe go have been the difference for me this year when the rest of the 1st team have been missing they’ve stepped in and stepped up getting themselves in the convo for starting spots especially since the turn of the year they have been incredible for me .

Agree1

16 Mar 2024 12:06:29
Elliott seems to have been working in the gym. His physicality seems to be improving. His technical skill and passion has never been in doubt. A fan on the pitch!

Bobby Clark has not looked out of place at all. Presses, is quick, gets stuck into tackles, covers space intelligently and is really good on the ball. He looks like he's going to be a very good no8.

McConnell is an interesting player. Looks like he has good instinct for tackles and interceptions and if my eyes are not deceiving me, he's two-footed. Has some work to do on his physical attributes, but that should come in time.

Brilliant team Liverpool full good youngsters.

15 Mar 2024 12:30:50
Atalanta in Europa League quarters. Hopefully on of easier opponents we could face.

15 Mar 2024 12:53:14
Atalanta are no mugs.

The only team I wanted to avoid is Roma because of their ultras. Not worth the trouble. It actually annoys me that they are allowed to continue in the tournament after consistent issues.

Agree14

15 Mar 2024 12:54:57
Jürgen V Alonso in the final could have a great story behind it.

Agree8

15 Mar 2024 13:14:04
Be good to see how alonso does against wet spam.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 13:27:36
Liverpool should be destroying this competition, no matter who we face. Atalanta are not the tricky, sleek team they were from 2018-2021 when they had Ilicic and Gomez causing chaos. They also can’t defend.
As the Sparta Prague manager classily pointed out yesterday, Liverpool are a high-level Champions League team playing at a much higher level than the other teams in this competition. No excuses for not winning it.

Agree11

15 Mar 2024 13:34:37
Leverkusen are not getting to the final they barely beat Qarabag, reckon West Ham will beat them tbh.

Agree5

15 Mar 2024 14:20:21
@Kloppers, i do share your view point. Leverkusen could actually underestimate west ham. West ham is playing top football by the way they crush Freiburg. Will be real test for Leverkusen.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 15:26:30
Leek, top football? West Ham? Have you seen their last several games in the PL where many of their fans wanted (and still want) Moyes gone? Miss me with that stuff, man. Top football and WH in the same sentence is the stuff of pure comedy.

As fo Atalanta, we could have gotten Milan or Roma so I'll take it. We play up to our potential, we beat them and go thru.

Agree7

15 Mar 2024 15:36:44
Agree with everything you've said there, OliRed.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 15:53:51
OliRed watch West Ham closer, when Paqueta plays they play. No coincidence their form dropped this season whilst he was unavailable.

Some feckless performances this season no doubt but any team with Paqueta, Bowen and Kudos playing can cause teams huge problems. Leverkusen have been superlative all season but are not infallible, West Ham I believe have won 26/ 28 of their last European matches. Highly unlikely it will be a procession and should be a good tie.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 16:31:33
Any of the teams left could beat any other on a given day.

Over 2 legs though is there anyone left that could beat Liverpool? I don’t think so.

Agree3

15 Mar 2024 16:47:37
Big Jorg, I fully agree with you on the Paqueta being absent and all that BUT to say that WH has been playing top footie is just porkies, man. Have they had good performances? yeas. Have they had wretched ones? ABsolutely. Vs Arsenal (6-0), Nott. Forest (5-0) and at Fulham (5-0). Did I also mention vs LFC (5-1 and 3-1)?

That ain't top football by any stretch when you get battered by near tennis scores once in a while. Vs Leverkusen? It will be a great tie and Im looking forward to him.

Agree2

15 Mar 2024 16:56:21
I agree with that BP, I don't think any of teams left will beat us over 2 legs but a final a different story, 1 off game anything can happen. Good draw for us overall, although as far as winning it goes we probably better off playing leverkusan in quater final rather than a final as they be possibly distracted with closing out bundesliga title win. By time final is on they probably have it won.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 17:17:46
We’ll win this Europa League with ease if we want.
Only way we don’t, is if we literally Chuck it because we focus on other competitions.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 17:58:17
I'd quite like to see us hit double digits against Rome, just to teach their ultras a lesson.

Agree4

15 Mar 2024 18:56:52
@Lowel, I totally agree with you - what’s the need in playing any of the games ? We are far, far better than any of the other teams left in it. I’ve actually just written to UEFA pointing this out and have asked them just to send the trophy over to Anfield as early as possible next week.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 19:28:26
I can see a Liverpool vs West Ham final tbh. Paqueta is back fit and they’re pretty resilient in European matches.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 19:33:36
Leverkusen with batter West Ham this way and that way.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 20:37:33
Agree with Lowe. I take nothing for granted, but I think I will be a bit disappointed if we don't add this to Klopps trophy haul.

Agree1

15 Mar 2024 23:13:46
We'll win this trophy, I have no doubts about it. We're so strong this season, no team will come close. Leverkusen deserve respect, they've done very well this season and I think they'll have enough to get into the final vs us.

Agree0

16 Mar 2024 06:30:04
Salah - Agreed on all points. Liverpool have coped quite remarkably with the injury crisis that would have ruined the seasons of pretty much every other team in the league. A lot of that is down to Jurgen Klopp, but it must be said our squad is packed with amazing technical quality. Though I doubt Alisson will play again until August, I think the injuries we have sustained in 2024 may turn out to give us the vital energy boost we’ll need to win 2 or 3 trophies this season.
