Just seen mourinhos post match comments last night, already making excuses for Sunday, reeling off the amount of players he has injured and how tired Matic is etc! I can see how the game will play out already, united with 10 men behind the ball, hoping to nick it with a goal.

They will win. It’s typical, everything to do with our season, unbeaten run, qualified for last 16, not lost at home in god knows how long, our form compared to theirs, player happiness compared to theirs. It’s got United 1 nil written all over it 😂
Jose is just the ass that will beat us in this one off game.

I hope not benny, don’t think I could handle mourinho’s smug face if that happened 😩 I just hope we’re patient in our play because we’re going to need it, they will sit back and soak up pressure all game and try and hit us on the counter. I think if we are patient and not try to force the play, we will break through and get the win!

Ed001, I have a question for you if I may?
How good was Ian rush?
His goal scoring speaks for itself but he is never really mentioned when it comes to favourite players or best players people have seen.
A lot of videos I have seen of him, he seems to be charging thought the defence and finishing well, was that his game? Great finisher with good pace?
Thanks for any input!

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - Rush was simply world class. When he was at Juventus, they used to say that having him was like having a Ferrari with no engine, as he was brilliant but the team around him was nowhere near his level. He was far more than a pacey finisher. He was the first line of defence, stopping opposition teams from playing out from the back as he would be running around giving them no time on the ball. The timing of his runs was superb as well, unlike say Inzaghi, who would make 50 runs in the hope of getting one right, Rush would make 50 runs and almost always stay onside.

The reason why no one mentions him as the best is that he played alongside the greatest player the club has ever had - Kenny Dalglish. He was so good that no one could compare.}

We could've won 4 nil easily, not saying that as a liverpool fan but look at the chances missed. Mane with 2 in the last ten mins.

The game reminded me of the marsile liverpool game a few years ago where we won 4 nil needing a win to progress. We were ruthless that night.

A lovely read, thanks Ed.

The dust hasn’t even settled and I see that Klopp is already being bombarded with the “Who do you fear in the next round” question. We know that we will be facing a strong team, there is no such thing as an easy option at this stage.

What the media should be asking is, who doesn’t want get us? I am fairly confident that the answer will Be ALL of the group winners because the prospect of facing the current Premier League leaders and a team that have only conceded only 6 league goals in 16 games, there are safer options for them. Those managers will look at our team, they will see arguably one of the Top 3 Goalkeepers, Center Backs and Forwards in the world and be praying for a different name to come out of the hat.

{Ed001's Note - I would fear an easy draw myself, we do better when it is difficult!}

thanks ed! Matip has really impressed me this season. he does try and make something happen with the ball at his feet. and his aggression is much improved. gutted for him. an excellent performance from everyone and pleased for the midfield three in particular because the reaction to the team was really negative!

if we play anywhere near as well on Sunday we should get the 3 points!

Great Read as usual. Thanks ED01.

Agree completely with Koulibaly! absolute rock for Napoli. I hope Man Utd don't get him, he would improve their defence massively.

Loved Wijnaldum's performance but it's annoying! Why can't he do it every game.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - Koulibaly has shown no inclination to leave Napoli and I am one of those who feels he probably would be nothing like the same player if he moved. He seems to have an affinity for the club that gives him an extra 10% every time he plays.}

13 Dec 2018 10:58:28
Fair review Ed01, Gomez and now Matip much improved, the presence of Alisson and Van dijk is a major factor in this, the whole defence look so confident and assured.
I know Mane missed a few but no worries as he was not at 100%. He can score a few against Man utd instead.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - fingers crossed!}

13 Dec 2018 11:04:25
Fantastic read, Ed, and the analysis of the opposition is hugely appreciated as well.
Where do you rate van Dijk on a list of top Centre-backs? I believe he’s the best of the lot, and it’s not even close. Just look at our improvement since he came in.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - it depends, this season I would say he has been the best, but previously Godin was. Koulibaly is running him close though, as is the other Atleti centre back, as Godin has been poor this season. Alderweireld, if he was at his best, would be close too. Possibly Varane too.}

13 Dec 2018 11:07:19
Great insight! You really do see what many don't tbh. For example, the Firmino insight. Some double footed tackles into him from fans for being awful. Really not fair! Off the ball, he broke a sweat I thought and was key in some important moments of the game. Overall though, really insightful piece there mate. Couldn't be more proud to be a fan of this beautiful club. Just hope we do United over with a clean sheet and the blue nose come home with a point even. We're close to something special, I know it!

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate. I did wonder why the fans were chanting Robbo's name when Bobby did all the work though! I thought that was a bit harsh. Even when Firmino is having an off game he contributes massively as his workrate gives opponents hell. They never get an easy ride against him.}

13 Dec 2018 11:22:09
Cracking review Ed, agree with every line I think. And i'm glad you gave Hendo the rating he deserves, a lot of the ratings I've seen papers and that give him have been a 7. Expecting him to be running around doing everything from the number 6 role, imo showing either a lack of respect for him and his role in the side now, or just plain ignorance about different midfield positions. Was my MOTM till Alisson pulled out a worldie!

And in Robertsons defence I think a lot of the team were lose with the ball at stages.

I wish Gini would play like that every week, he still had moments he played within himself, the quick one two where he could have drove on and gave a poor pass instead comes to mind, but he looked dangerous for a change against Napoli

Cheers Ed.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - very true about the passing, both sides had loose periods, but Robbo and Bobby in particular seemed to struggle. I personally think those two were just trying too hard to do things quickly and both of them more than made up for it with the rest of their game.

As for Hendo, I don't know what newspapers say, as I don't read them, but he was excellent and I can't believe anyone who watched him would not see that!

Gini was the player we want, rather than the player we usually get. That is why I get so frustrated by his performances, because he is fully capable of performing at this level every single game.}

Hi Ed's,

Do you know anything about the training and fitness the squad do before games? For example the United game coming up. Do they do a lot of team, or individual stuff? Runs, sprints for fitness. Pass and move drills. Fun activities like head tennis or something silly like that. Be interesting to know what they.

Agree1 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - it varies depending on how tired the players are, what games are coming up, injuries etc. They will mostly do recovery work only for a day or two after a match, then a bit of work on formation, team shape and tactics the day before a game. That is pretty much all they have time for during a run of games like this. Over Xmas they will only really do recovery work between games, if anything at all.}

13 Dec 2018 09:00:52
I’ve always been intrigued as to how they train on passing and dribbling, this is by far the most technically able liverpool side i’ve seen, the composure and technique on the ball, the link up between players is amazing at times.

13 Dec 2018 10:02:56
Hi Ed01 thanks for the reply.

Do you know how they would train if there was say a week between games?
How many days they have off. Times, drills they do etc?

Do they do stuff like video analysis of the opposition? Opposition player analysis?

Be very interesting to know what they do in typical day start to finish!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge ED! Invaluable as always.

Agree0 0Disagree

{Ed001's Note - I would have to look into it properly to find out mate. One thing with Klopp is he changes it, each year he tweaks things depending on what he has learnt, also there is likely to have been a lot of changes without Buvac, I would think.

When he was at Dortmund, I know they used to do video analysis the day before a game, opposition analysis is down to Krawietz. I would assume they stick to that, as it is usually a light training session.

Anyway sorry, from memory the basics used to be, two days following a game are for recovery work, so very little actual training. Day before is video analysis work, tactical work and one on one chats with players to get instructions over. Very little physical work.

Any time inbetween that will depend a lot on the players' fitness levels, which will be assessed by the fitness coaches on the two day's recovery. The rest is actually mostly down to individual coaches to do their job under Klopp's supervision. For instance, Achteberg will decide what drills the keepers need to work on. Usually it will be based on what the team needs, either because they have spotted something that went wrong or just something they have been wanting to work on. They usually all sit down to eat together, the players and staff, with Mona Nemmer responsible for providing all the meal plans used.

It is very difficult to do a typical day, as the coaches will try and vary what drills they use to keep it interesting and also I am not sure how much has changed without Buvac. I have seen a lot of footage of training, spoken to former players and coaches that have worked with them and read lots of interviews about what goes on in the past, but nothing since Buvac left. I have to be honest, no one really explained to me exactly what his role was! No one seemed sure, they always just described him as always talking to Klopp and you never saw pictures or footage of him doing anything else. I am sure he must have done more, but I just do not know what it was.}

Great read Ed001 - good to see Koscielny making a return, was awful seeing his injury last season.

While I’m here, also figured I should let you all know that there’s no way I’m going to get the time to do the PL preview done for this week or over Christmas. It’s the busiest time of year even without having to write them so I’m pretty overloaded as it is! Apologies about that everyone - I’m hoping to get back to it in January!

Hope that’s ok.

Morning Ed, thanks as always for the information. I have to say, I was just as baffled when I read about Tony Adams, doesn't make much sense to me.

I remember not too long ago, losing Gomez and Matip (who has look more assured alongside VVD) at this time of the season could have completely derailed us, especially since we've not heard if TAA will be fit, but then a back line of robbo, VVD, lovren and either fabinho or milner doesn't scare me either. It's nice to see we're building strength in depth. Not 100% yet but leaps and bounds from where we've been previously. Hope you have a good day ed.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate it is an odd one, not sure what Adams offers them.}

This month so far is going much better then I expected! 4 games in, all wins, 9 goals scored, 1 conceded! we'll have more of that please! 4 more games this month, we'll beat Utd on Sunday, anybody really concerned about it? I'm not and usually I would've been. It's time for a hammering I think! I'm more concerned about Wolves away next Friday, I think we'll do them but I do see it being a close one.

Anyway, BOOM! this season is going bloody fantastic, who'd of thought we'd of been in mid December unbeaten in the league? I was very confident about us at the beginning of the season but I'd never of imagined us to do this well, long may it continue!

Have a good day all!

13 Dec 2018 07:28:18
Who’d have thought it indeed.
If we come out of December still top or even two points down on City, I’d be delighted.
I had feared we’d be perhaps five or more points adrift of them going into the New Year.
No more injuries though please.

Matip our for 6 weeks. We did not need this and he did not need this. I feel bad for him as he was just establishing himself as a reliable defender.

Lovern can't play all those games in december and I'm sure at some VVD will need a break too.

Who can step up from the youth set up? Think we will have to use some youth players against wolves and newcastle at rb and cb.

Indeed, we have reserves for a reason. As long as whoever plays gets stuck in and stakes their climb, then that's great. I really feel like all the players are pushing eachother on to improve now, its great to see.

Ed's,

What do you think will be Klopps first choice midfield when everyone is fit and firing? I'd personally go with fab, keita and shaqiri depending on the opposition with wijnaldum coming in if we need a bit more control in midfield.

Agree1 1Disagree

{Ed001's Note - he doesn't have a 'first choice' it is a game by game basis.}

13 Dec 2018 07:31:56
We truly have the perfectly rotating midfield with 6 players who have enough quality to start or challenge for every game when fit, plus Lallana as back up.

I would expect that when fully fit and firing, Keita will command a permanent starting position. The rest can rotate in and out depending on the opposition.
