my starting line up vs stoke city:
Reina

Coates
carragher Agger
Johnson Enrique

Lucas Adam
Kuyt Downing

Suarez

Subs: Bellamy, skyrtel, flanagan, maxi, shelvey, carroll, Henderson. RedTurk

Your starting lineup is wrong

09 Sep 2011 22:28:13
Predicted starting lineup:
Pepe Reina, Glen Johnson, Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, Jose Enrique, Lucas Leiva, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Dirk Kuyt, Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll

How solid are we looking ?
Good times again.

Mikel

Not to mentioned Bellamy, Gerrard, Maxi, and Henderson in addition. I am quite sure we have the most chance creators out of any squad in the EPL. If it possible to find a young striker with Torres 2007-2009 finishing ability we would be quite unstoppable.

Just thought i'd share this with you guys :D

Stoke have only netted two goals in their last five Premier League games combined.

Liverpool haven't won at the Britannia Stadium in the Premier League, drawing two and losing one of three games there.

Stoke have only lost one of their last 10 home league games; a 0-1 defeat to Wigan on the final day of last season.

The Potters have failed to score in four of their six PL meetings with Liverpool.

This is Stoke's best start to a Premier League season after three games, with five points accrued already.

Liverpool have scored in all but one of their last 13 away league games.

The Reds have taken seven points from their opening three games this season: as many as in 10/11 (four) and 09/10 (three) combined.

Liverpool are the only Premier League side to have scored more than once in the opening 15 minutes of games this season (two).

Stoke have mustered only three headed shots in the PL this season, fewer than any other side, while Liverpool have had the most (12).

The Potters have played the highest % of their passes long (24.7%) and launched the most long throw-ins (35) in the Premier League this season.

Ghandi Floss

So all that adds up to a 4-3 Liverpool victory.

That's right folks - you read it here first.

Archimedes.

Does somebody honestly get paid to keep track of these meaningless statistics?

The FACT is that, football is unpredictable. Those statistics do not make the outcome of the game any more or less likely.

Don't get me wrong, fascinating stuff, nothing against you matey. I just think that there is too much waffle about statistics and analysis in the game now, and it's less concentrated on what truly matters, what happens on the pitch.

There's usually 40 minutes of crap before the kick off on skysports, and on MOTD the majority of it is pointless punditry that nobody honestly cares about.

Sorry to rant mate,
Keep up the great work
Jacob red

I appreciate your reply m8 :)

@ Huyton Red,
re : Stadium development post at 14.18hrs
Again cheers for the reply mate. Your maths do indeed work out. You can use mortgage calculators on the net for £1m and multiply up by 260.
However, I'm only being devil's advocate here, but trying to be realistic not personally getting at you.
You say a new ground would cost £300m, presumably with a larger capacity than Arsenal as per JWH interview. Arsenal's ground actually cost £390m to build, and with additional infrastructure requirements (transport etc) their total stadium debt was £490m.
I'm not saying that a new LFC stadium would have London-style costs and infrastructure requirements, but there are a lot of other needs and the final cost would be significantly more than £300m mate.
Again, as a comparison, Arsenal's naming rights deal with the Emirates was £100m over 15 years (which is £6.66m per year). Your assumption was that a new LFC naming deal would be £200m over 10 years (£20m per year). Mmmm, again I can't see that. Especially again with the global recession.
I will stick to my opinion that it's Anfield redevelopment.
Cheers, The Real KB

Hi real KB

I know your not having ago and appreciate your raising valid points rather than just saying "head in the clouds" "your stupid" "never gunna happen" this is how intelligent debates take place.

I would be lying if I said I knew the ins and outs of arsenals build expenses etc. However I will list what I do know.

Arsenals build cost was £390m - this was in London (higher material and labour costs than NW) and was before the last financial crisis. The original cost for Stanley park was £350m however financial crisis and subsequent effect on construction industry has knocked prices down by 20% to 280 + 20m contingency fund.

My understanding is Arsenal also had to buy the land in London which would be added to construction cost.

Arsenal also spent a lot of money converting highbury into luxury aparments - which later gave them a big income on sales.

Your right arsenals naming rights were £100m for 15 years and more significantly also included 6years of shirt sponsorship.

Compare that to Liverpool who get £20m a year just for shirts. Our deal will way outstrip arsenals.

Forgot to add. United just got 10m a year for their training kit. Think it's realistic to expect more than that for the naming rights to the home of 5 times euopean cup winners.

It's also worth noting that after 10 years when the ground is paid for. In addition to the additional income the new ground will generate the club will continue to sell naming rights - something they'll never be able to do at anfield.

Let me say YOUR HEAD IS IN THE CLOUDS AND NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Do you watch the news? Are you aware what is happening in Europe? Do you take an interest in the financial markets? Luckily our owners do and thats why your day dream info is way off. The conractions at the moment are threatening to make the impact of the last credit crunch seem like a babies burp. So dont expect Wembley of the North.

Oh and please....

Get Real

Get real provide some facts to back up your arguement please. Your constant put downs with no substance are getting boring and tedious.

If the idea was so obserde can you please explain why these owners you are lording are openly seeking naming rights partners? Surly if it was a waste of time they wouldn't waste their own?

Do you really think Fsg are that stupid?

Hi eds re torrez he is going nowhere he is the 4th highest paid player on the planet which meens nobody can afford him especially the way hes playing ,also the reason he left us was approximately a 100k extra a week which I dont see any person/sportsman/ whoever would turn down I have been a liverpool supporter for 66years and for that kind of raise Id have been gone in the blink of an eye so would all who read this post.(except for the rainhill crown) and even them Im not sure about bye.

It's quite sad that you feel like this. There is a lot more to life than money, especially when you already have vast amounts.

Wavertree red

Id play for liverpool for free!im sure his wages for liverpool was enough to set him up for life!what are you chatting about

So earning 120k a week and playing for the team you love you would still leave to sign for a club with crap supporters who can't even come up with any decent songs. No chance this would happen I'd be staying a red end of 100 k extra a week or not.

Are you sure your a Liverpool fan lad cos it doesn't sound like you are. You'd leave for the Chelsea palsies because they offer you more money behave. They couldn't even think up a new song when they bought him and let's not forget the flag they robbed because again they couldn't come up with one of their own.

hi eds all reds i have been caught out by the different way the match tickets are being sold . i was hopeing to take my son to the wolves game on the 24th of sept ,my birthday on the 25th. unfortunatley , when i got through to the ticket office it was sold out. so despite being a member, no tickets. could any of you advise me of anywhere or anyone, who i could get two tickets off please. thanks everyone. good luck to the players at stoke tomorrow. steviep48. {Ed001's Note - I don't know any more, everyone I used to get tickets off in the past has had to give up their season tickets because of money. They are like gold dust this season!}

Poor guys who bought a season ticket last year when roy was in charge!

Ok ed thanx but if anyone can suggest anything id be grateful steviep48

You will get a text a week or 2 before a game if there are any spares and I would phone as soon as the text arrives. Failing that the only other options are hospitality - cheapest is £150- 200 meal after the game and ticket or Thomas cook sports website do a hotel and ticket package for about £150 each.
These are the only options I'm aware of apart from sucking up to a sponsor.
Ultra Red {Ed001's Note - try magazines such as 4-4-2 and World Soccer as well, they might have ads in there for companies that do the tickets.}

09 Sep 2011 18:20:07
as we are playing stoke tomorrow

do you think we should start with any carrol ed

i personally think we should to see if there defenders can cope with him.

i would love to to play a 4 3 3
againest them

swurez carrol and belamy

with downing adam and kuyt

doubt it happen though {Ed001's Note - I would keep Carroll on the bench against Stoke, bring him on when they are tiring. Their defence are big and strong and suited to playing against him.}

I think he'll play Suarez and Kuyt up front with Carroll and Bellamy on the bench. With Hendo, Lucas, Adam and Downing midfield.

I think the best option wud be to play bellamy and suarez and have kuyt on the right for his work ethic our pace up front wud be perfect for adam to feed and i think u may see carra on the right with agger and coates centre and enrique left to deal with them from set plays

I think if we do start with any Carroll it should be Andy!

Samson Rasher

I think kk will keep carrol on the bench. His physical presence wil be completely negated by stoke's big defenders. Wud luv to see a front 3 of downing, suarez n bellamy.

Eds, if Carroll continues playing poorly up until January, do you expect another high calibre striker to be bought? Or do you expect us to just play 5 in Midfield {Ed001's Note - playing poorly? I am not sure he has been playing all that poorly, I think the team have not been getting the best out of him yet, but he did ok.}

09 Sep 2011 19:00:59
Does anyone know the injury situation with Charlie Adam? I know he came off injured for Scotland. Just wondering if he's fit again to face Stoke.

Many Thanks

so whats everybodys favourite signing of the summer?
post below your favourite signing and briefly why.

mines downing.
this is because we have been crying out for a decent wide player for as long as i can remember, i see him making the biggest difference in the team. he gives us a whole new attacking threat from the wide areas.

MIKEY

Sebastian Coates. Gorgeous! What a smile!

For footballing reasons, v hard to choose between the midfielders but am going for Downlng so far. Signs of a great partnership with Luis.....and I really was not a fan of his before.

Cant say i have seen coates play. only on youtube. but he has his fans and 7m or whatever it was for the copa america young player of the tournament seems like very good business, most of our signings look like good business to be honest its hard picking just the one,

MIKEY

In terms of value for money, it's Enrique. £6m is a bargain for top, top LB. How he isn't international is baffling.

In terms of promise to the future, it's got to be Coates. Cannot wait to see him play, young and talented.

In terms of what the player brings to the club, it's Adam. His distribution of the ball is world class, and will prove deadly this season.

In terms of attitude, it's Bellamy. His love for the club is evident in that he has taken a pay cut to be here, wants a second swing of the bat (no pun intended), and you've got to give him credit. I like to see that in a player, playing with his heart on his sleeve and can't wait to see him on the pitch. I get a feeling he will be dynamite with Suarez.

Jacob red.

09 Sep 2011 17:28:31
I think Kenny will play our players who have the most pace as stoke are not well known for their mobility hope bellamy gets a run and if we are lucky enought to have a 3-0 lead i'd like to see coates get 20 minutes

MJ

there is obviously no transfer activity now apart from long shot rumours, however, I just looked at the situation the club was in a month ago and where it is now in terms of the personnel and its quite staggering.

15 players have left. Thats FIFTEEN players that were surplus to requirements and a massive drain off the wage bill. What a transformation in a short space of time because the players that have come in have gelled very well into the team and squad. I have to say the dream situation would have been a right winger but lets see as things may change in January.

Its a long season and we nee dto be patient as something great is happening on and off the picth at LFC.

So here again to put things in perspective and to demonstrate how far we have come in a short space of time. We have off loaded:

1 Deggen
2 Ayala
3 Darby
4 Konchsky
5 Insua
6 Cole (loan)
7 Jovanovic
8 Meirelles
9 El Zhar
10 Pacheco (loan)
11 Ngog
12 Poulson
13 Acquillani (loan)
14 Kygriakos
15 Jones

We all know who has come in and I think on the whole, we can be delighted with the progress everyone has made in the club from the boardroom to the playing staff.

Lets not get carried away about what we can this season. Dont forget we were miles behind points wise last time and to make up such a huge gap especially when our opponents have also strengthened is a big ask.

However, with KK in charge, you never know!

#YNWA

18 players have left mate - Kenny's words not mine

MJ

When did jones leave?

Add mavinga ince bruna and darby is on loan

18 players left - have a recount

               Reina
Johnson Carragher  Coates Enrique
               Lucas
         Adam    Spearing
Suarez                   Downing
              Carroll

Subs: Doni, Agger, Maxi, Kuyt, Bellamy, Gerrard

This is my team for the Stoke game. I would like your thoughts? Eds and readers? I will try and justify my selection.

Reina - No doubt why he should be in the net, best 'keeper in the world.

Johnson - With Kelly injured and Stoke being very physical it is important to have some experiance to stop Stokes wingers getting balls into the box. The signing of Crouch and with Kenwyne Jones it makes it more important.

Enrique - Similar to Johnson Experiance at the back is important. He will more than likely be up against former Red Jermaine Pennant so it important we have pace to stop him.

Carragher - Again a no brainer, still playing very well despite his so called error against Bolton.

Coates - We need physicallity at the back and he will offer us this. He has the ability and frame to stope both Crouch and Jones so I think it is important he starts.

Lucas - I would like him to sit just in front of the back 4 to pick up what they clear and then pass it to the other attackers on the pitch. We need a passer and a tackler in the side and Lucas will give us that.

Adam - For his set peices alone we should have him in the side, he will give us options and help out Lucas when needs must.

Spearing - With Gerrard nearing a return we should let Spearing play a more attacking role for this game. He will offer some real grit in the center and give 110%.

Downing - Started his LFC career very well and we need to get balls in the box. Downing is one of the best in the business at this. With Carroll up front he needs Downing's service.

Suarez - Playing on the right of a front 3, he will be able to get past players and then get balls into Carroll. His work rate is top class and should play as many games as possible.

Carroll - Wrongly critised for his 'lifestyle' when there are players like Rooney and a Welsh team mate of his with worse lifestyles. His height and heading ability will be alot for Stoke to handle but he will give the likes of Upson, Woodgate or Shawcross a real fight. He will also help out at the back with Rory's throws Delap plays.

With this team and bench we have a real chance to get 3 points for the first time at The Brittania. Feedback is welcome

Stoke play with out and out wingers so I expect us to play a 4-4-2 to counter-act with our wingers helping the full-backs. I would also be shocked to see Coates make his debut in a game like this, it could scare him for life! Agger in for Coates - Henderson RM instead of Spearing (who would offer nothing defending set-pieces) - Suarez and Carroll or Kuyt up-front.

JRG

The likes of Woodgate,Shawcross and Upson like the ball in the Air.
Keep it on the ground and run rings round them, 3 points on the way.
It's a football match with 3 points at stake and not the Andy Carroll heading challenge? ;(
kidmillions

Not a bad shout. couples of things to remember. we have not won at the Britannia yet and stoke have had the better of us in recent years.

i think KK will ease coates into the team and stick with Agger.

I agree with the rest for this ame though when Gerrard comes back, i would go as follows:

Reina

Johnson Carra Coates Enrique

Gerrard Adam Lucas Downing

Suarez Bellamy

Subs: Doni, Kelly, Agger, Hendo, Maxi, Carroll, Kyut

Gerrard could easily come in field if we need to change things. I am still not convinced abt Carroll and for all his running around, Kuyt doesnt score enough. We need to take pressure of Suarez and Bellamy is an able partner but we will need reinforcements in Jan.

Coates wouldn't be there, unless we drop Carra(seems unlikely), As Agger is class. I don't see a point in us, droping him. And it would be Henderson rather than Spearing. The rest would be the same, probably 4-4-2.

Switch Spearing with Adam, then put Henderson in place of Spearing. I expect Bellamy to come off the bench for Downing at some point in the game. Hopefully Coates starts, we need him to take on the strikers in their team.

RenegadeRed

Carra needs to be dropped for this game .We need to push stoke back and attack them, to do this we need to drop the Titanic at the back, or we will sink.He his the most overrated defender ever.Come on Kenny man. Ditch the hoofer now.

So drop our best defender in Agger? I don't think so.

Reina

Johnson Coates Agger Enrique

Henderson Lucas Adam Downing

Suarez Bellamy

maka

Coates wont start in a million years and you have spearing in instead of hendo, and no hendo on the bench, glad your not the manager!

Not bad at all, I really like the formation.
My few gripes are that I can't see Coates starting. Nobody wants a debut against Stoke, it'll be hard and horrible. My bet is Skrtel, for his aspect of muscle against Jones and Crouch and as you rightly say - experience.
I would start Spearing as well, wrongly criticised in my view. We need to fight fire with fire, Stoke will be arduous and that's exactly what Jay brings - good call.
No Hendo in the line-up? Perhaps a good shout, perhaps not. I think having scored last week, that will be in the back of his mind, and it would be a good idea to at least have him on the bench and take that confidence into the game.
Carroll is a must starter for me, Suarez will get bullied out of the game without him.

Jacob red

Coates and Carra are both right footed and would never displace a fit left footed Daniel Agger. We've just had years of trying to fit square pegs in round holes?
King Kenny has bought Enrique, Downing and Adam who along with Agger are all left footers and all in the team.
No team at any level can win trophys consistently without talented left footed players. It's one of the most important factors in building a well balanced team.
Thank God for King Kenny.

Is it just a stab in the dark but i reckon it could be possible that FERNANDO TORRES could make a dramatic return to the redmen. Would he be forgiven?

R u insane! He said "football is a business" we only want players who have a bit more pride who want to play for the club. Nando walked away from iconic status the fans worshipped him and he walked away at the worst time and he turned his back on King Kenny! He is human waste just like Owen.

Luis Suarez all the way

Dont Buy the Sun

Don't be silly. Forget about the fact that he tried to burn us when he left, his form the past year and a half as been absolute rubbish.

There is no way in hell that we would buy such a clown. Get real FFS.

£20m only can paid for him.

Why would we want him back? He clearly is not the player he was 3 years ago, injurys have plagued him and it probably didn't help that there was no back up for him here meaning he played when he should have been rested, but his best days are past him now and although form is temporary and class is permanent he now looks like more like £5million pound striker rather than a £50million striker, sellng Torres was the best bit of business done by the club in years...bar FSG buying us that is, it's time to lok to the future not the past.

Gman82

For a tasty profit, cut wage and him to give us a public apology as a community, perhaps.
Jacob red

I'd forgive him he was quality whilst he was here and think he could still do a job.Luis Andy and nando frightening.

Why would we want a knackered out striker like him anyway? I heard a rumour a while back that his knees are not what they were as the ground in England is harder than it is in Spain and over time, this has knackered his knees out. Don't know how true it is, but he certainly isn't the player he was. I expect him to wind up back in Spain soon with a team outside the top 2.

Ash

Welcome back Fernando

Although his chances of returning are non existent, he would keep suarez on the bench

How much do you think Torres is worth mow on current form? I think £20m is too much on current form.

JRG {Ed009's Note - I could see him going to Malaga for about 30 million.}

Nando's return is a distant possibility. I won't be at all surprised, let alone shocked, if he does return. It all depends on how he gets on from now till january 'cos i expect Abramo's patience to have snapped by that time if Nando's goal drought has continued till then.

BooDaBooze

He would keep Suarez on the bench? are you for real! Alphared

"Although his chances of returning are non existent, he would keep suarez on the bench"

No, sir! He would keep Carroll on the bench to form a formidable partnership with Suarez.

BooDaBooze

Pfffffffftttttt! SingRed

Torres is playin worse than carlton cole. Wudnt pay a penny more than wat cole is worth for torres. Ed is right. Let him go to malaga n earn his big bucks. he betrayed us n is a mercenary. Why wud we want him when king luis is around?
Indian Buzzer

No! from what I've read I don't think the Athletico Madrid fans were one bit surprised either at the way Torres left us back in January. Says a lot about his character. Do you really want this type of player in a red's shirt unlike Downing, Adam, Coates, Suarez, etc. who want to give everything they've got week in and week out for our team. I for one don't want to see him back here. Slan abhailie Torres!

Cuchulainn's Hounds

We should buy him 5 million pounds or so, and then sell him to real madrid, the club he hates, for some paella to have him rot on their bench,

Whats Poor Carlton Cole done? to be compared to Torres! :)
kidmillions

Keep suarez on the bench ? what u been smoking? , next to kk suarez is the most exciting player i have seen in my 37 years of following the mighty reds, theres no one on this planet who can keep suarez on the bench if he is fit, we got a great team now ,great owners and staff, but believe me suarez will be the difference between a top 4 finish and WINNING the epl ! Y.N.W.A kingkennykop7

Torres is only bad becuase there is no Gerrard to feed him the ball, everytime stevie got the ball he looked for Torres and the mo*ons said Gerrard played bad for the last two years cause he was not a glory hunter!

If you re-united Torees with Gerrard and had Torres interested in playing the goals would flow again.

Simples!

I've seen a few sites selling Liverpool tickets eg 1st4footballTickets.com.I just wanted to know if it's safe to buy them because all liverpool games are sold out on the official lfc site.

So are you considering £162.50 to go to Stoke tommorow or waiting for MUFC to visit in October for £422.50? Not heard of the site until you mentioned it. However if you have the money and its legit then fair play, i'd do anything to be at more games. Doe's anybody have any better options or info on this particular site? Disagreeing with a question doesn't make much sense
TheRedEye

You would be better off buying a ticket off a tout outside the ground at least you know you get your ticket in your hand or even try gumtree

I've used www.footballclubtickets.bz in the past. They were reliable, but you pay through the arse for a ticket.

Manchester United and Arsenal earn £1.5m a game more than Liverpool, that's £28.5m a season based solely on league games . Taking Europe (either CL or Uefa) and cup competitions, additional "emirates cup" style competitions, increased advertising revenue etc, a conservative estimate to increased revenue generated by a new ground would be around £30m a year.
10 year £200m naming rights deal would be £20m a year.
That would increase revenue by £50m a season.
New ground costing £300m.
Knock off £20m from the club/owners and £20m first instalment of naming rights means the club would have to borrow £260m lets say at 10% (being conservative).
If the club paid of £2m a month (£24m a year) plus £20m at the end of each year when the naming rights money comes in to the club (£44m a year) this would allow the club to pay off the finance in less than 10 years. (wont bore you all with the calculations however Ed can email a copy of the SS/calculations involved – as I use it in work to calculate loan/mortgage costs)
This means the club would have an additional £6m a year whilst paying back the finance and £50m a year once the finance is paid off.
The biggest benefit to the owners would be the massive leap in the value of their asset.
In summary if redeveloping Anfield is a no go due to red tape and CPO delays, is it worth while building a new ground?
The answer is yes on 2 conditions. A good naming rights partner has to be found willing to pay at least £180m over 10 years and finance needs to be sourced at 10%p.a. or less.
If the club (or any other entity) offered you a bond yielding 10% a year would you take it? I would beats the 0.3-1 % the banks are offering. Additionally worth noting 1 of the share holders in FSG (Seth Klarman) is in control of a $22b hedge fund.

Huyton Red!

{Ed002's Note - You have made some very broad assumptions in your calculations.}

Huyton Red, can you do my tax returns next cheers Mr Whyte (Ibrox)

Ed02 the only assumption in there is the £30m additional income which can only be guessed at -educated guess obviously. All the other factors naming right, construction costs, finance costs would all be in place and finalised before contracts are signed.

Huyton red. {Ed002's Note - Well there is an assumption that someone is going to give Liverpool £20M naming rights. Together the two figures total more than 25% of Liverpool's annual income - so it is a very significant variable for a club that are going to declare a loss for last season and a significant loss for this season.}

And still you cant see the reality!

Get Real

That's not an assumption ed as I have said all along the new stadium is 100% dependant on the naming rights. No naming rights no stadium.

However as I have also said time and time again the offers are already on the table.

I think I have proved with the figures above a good naming rights partner makes the project more than viable.

Suppose the only question is if you believe me that we now have offers in principle to make this a reality.

Get real obviously seems to think Liverpool Football Club is not capable of attracting s £180m naming rights deal over 10 years.

You will all see how right I am as soon as the deal is signed.

Huyton red

Huyton Red,
You say the club would have to borrow, say, £260m presuming a new ground costs £300m. That would be a long-term mortgage that the club would have to meet.
Do you have a mortgage at home mate ?
If you borrow £260m, the cost of the mortgage would be around double that in interest. So the mortgage would be circa £500m say. Interest is compound, not net. So you'd be looking at £60-70m annual mortgage repayments. Factor in new players on top of that, increasing wages, inflation etc. You could then see how easily the club could get into financial trouble.
Arsenal have only been able to get by with a combination of re-sale receipts of old Highbury, increased gate revenue, and bare minimal transfer spend but still CL money every year. (Yet Wenger is still castigated by their fans). It is not as simple as you make out mate.
The Real KB

Huyton Red I will write a long personal apology on here if you are correct. However FSG would never foist such an uncertain project upon the club because they unlike you understand global finance. You even made up some rubbish about FSG using the plans commisioned by Tom Hicks! You are persistent though ill give you that. You are probably the type who has being going nuts over the last couple years expecting VILLA and AGUERO! FSG are responbsible owners they are making the right decision. Now wake up from your daydream and....

Get Real

Very much technichal post. most of the source is in net and I am agree your can be right

Huyton Red

I think you make a valid point over this. You're estimates of additional income are as you "conservative" and in all reality are likely to be higher.

True there is the global recession but again there are companies out there who to some extent are recession proof and would put up the money say £20m per year over 10 years. I'll use coca cola as an example purely because they have been mentioned but they are pretty recession proof realy - how many of us have cut down the amount of coca cola that we buy plus and all the other drinks they make?

As the Ed says the BIG IF to the plan is will there be a naming partner.

Personally I think therre is one of several out there that will come forward with them money. If they haven't already got a deal in principle agreed.

As I say in more post a few post down FSG are actively looking for a naming partner.

Irish Red Dog

P.S. Ed's - Can you make the posting box bigger, it would make writing much easier to not have to scroll up and down to see what you're writing. (Not a criticism of your great site just a request)

Do you do Del boy's accounts?

What a work of fiction?

The real KB I actually have 4 mortgages. 1 for the property I live in and 3 buy to let mortgages. I understand what your saying over the cost of a mortgage often costing almost twice what you borrow however this is very much dependant on the interest rate and and the length of the loan. A mortgage is after all simply a secured loan. I also understand compounded interest. If you read my post I talk about financing over 10 years at 10% interest.

Even in simplistic term that means paying back £26m a year in capital plus any related interest. So even if the first year was 26+26 that's only 52. Then the following year we would only owe 244 so interest would drop to 24.4m. Etc etc. As I said this is just a very simplistic break down. Full formulated calculations make it 2m a month plus 20m once a year. Honestly mate for 10% p.a my figures are right. I make these calculation on a weekly bases for cash flow in work.

This project would have no impact on player costs and wages as i explained would more than finance itself - again dependant on the naming rights deal.

As for inflation that would be fantastic for the club. If inflation hit say 20% over five years that means the cost of tickets shirts etc would all go up by 20% therefore revenue would go up by 20% yet the debt would continue to decrease. If you borrow £1000 and pay all the interest on the bank doesn't then say well due to inflation you now owe £1100.

Regardless of weather you agree the naming rights are on the table or not the fact remains with naming rights and a 10% p.a finance deal the ground would pay for itself in 10 year making just £25m a year in additional revenue. This isn't my opinion its maths.

People can question if they can get £18m a year naming rights or even if they will build a new ground but you can't question the maths behind the logic.

I don't for 1 minute think the club would build a new ground without a naming rights partner just used maths to explain that a new ground is financially viable if these criteria are met.

Hi Ed's, just question if you don't mind, has the 25 man squad been realeased by now? As I can't seem to find it unless it excludes under 21's, was curious to see which of our starlets were stepping up to 1st team football this year, great site by the way lads {Ed002's Note - It is available and under 21s are not part of it.}

All of the squads are on the Premier League website , along with all the U21 players .

By the way , only four clubs named 25 players - is this a sign of the times ?

Everton could only find 18 - we were only one better with 19 , but what a fantastic collection of U21 players at Anfield .

Great help, thanks mate

Ok first up I don't have anyone in the know, am not an architect or exper on building regulations.

That said there is a lot of discussion on the the stadium - Redevelop or New Stadium. Personally I can see the benefits of both. I would be loathed to leave Anfield with all its history and atmosphere and anyone would be rightly concerned that a move to a new stadium would lose this history and atmosphere.

However from a commercial viewpoint we do need to increase capacity not only to say 60,000 in the short term but also towards 80,000 in the longer term. Additionally I beleive that the corporate boxes that could be included in a new stadium would be of far greater revenue generation than the same number of seats that they would occupy.

So hand on heart I don't know what I think is the right thing to do so I feel my comments here are out of complete nuetrality.

My point is this: -

If we read the John Henry interview in Telegraph it strikes me that several things are clear.

1. We would love to expand Anfield, but there are enough local and regulatory issues to keep that avenue stalled for years with no assurances that once begun it would bear any fruit ---- FSG want need to grow this club to be a succes on AND off the field, in today's commercial world a larger stadium is needed and needed sooner rather than later. It seems to me that John Henry is ruling out an Anfield redevelopment due to the time it will take and concerns that ultimately after a lot of work and plannning it still may not happen.

2. If a new stadium is constructed with 60,000 seats you've spent an incredible sum of money to add just 15,000 seats. If the cost is £300m for an extra 15,000 seats, that doesn't make any sense at all. ---- Clearly I think Henry is saying that you cannot spend £300m for such a small increase in capacity, and I feel he is saying that any new stadium would have a far greater capacity. This would make sense as to build 80,000 first off would be cheaper (probably) than 60,000 now and adding later. Given the numbers on the waiting lists for season tickets (quoted on this site so they could be wrong) would we not be likely to fill the majority of 80,000 seats?

3. That's why the search is on currently for a naming-rights partner. And that could very well happen. ---- Personally I think this is the biggest clue. "We are searching for a naming rights partner". I think we have to accept that and to me that would indicate along with Henry's other comments that a new stadium is what they are looking at.

Like I said I'm not in the know and not sure myself what the best option is but to me all the signs indicate a new ground.

Lets all hope whatever happens the right decision is made and if as I suspect it is a new ground then FSG and Henry listen to the supporters and design a stadium which keeps the atmosphere and in some ways can retain the history of our great Anfield.

We will all get behind Liverpool and support them wherever we play.

Irish Red Dog

I think your right Irish Red Dog, the million dollar question is will the new stadium be in Stanley park or in the Docklands as part of the Liverpool Waters Development?

Ozone

Very good post irish red dog , you sum up what i think as well , if a deal can be got for big money naming rights , it looks like a new home with 70-80.000 , i think, but as you say whatever happens , its the best for the club that matters and i think the owners will look at the long term view.........lfc

My view is that in the short-medium term, Anfield will be part redeveloped.
The new owners are savvy enough not to ever rule out a new stadium in the future, cos the fans would go mad and accuse them of selling out. So a new stadium would be a long term objective (10 yrs plus?). Before then, the club needs a squad good enough to regularly attain CL football and the revenue it brings. As well as reducing wage costs, getting younger players. JWH has been quoted as admiring Arsenal's example on this. But until (1) the squad is good enough and (2) the global economic market improves, I do not feel we can afford a new stadium. I could be wrong, and I wouldn't mind at all if I am, but i do not feel we can do it all at this moment in time.
Like your post, very thought provoking.
The Real KB

Thanks Ozone - Not wanting to get speculative but I would guess Stanley park may be the preferred site as there is already planning permission to some extent for that site.

Plus, and I don't know what other supporters would feel but there could be the view that the park would be closer to Anfield and therefore closer to home and more likely to retain history and sentiment with the area??

To the second poster, thanks as well. The more I think about it the more I do start to think it will be 70-80,0000 straight up. I agree with you that the the owners will take the long term view and I think they have already showed that they have good business acumen but also balance that with the needs and feelings of the supporters.

Irish Red DOg

Theres been a few suspicions and ideas bounced around within recent weeks Irish Red Dog.

My concern with the location for a new stadium is the commercial angle. Im not wholly certain of this but i would hazard a guess that the docklands area has been earmarked as an 'enterprise zone' and would therefore attract a business rates incentive. In addition I am quite sure the City Council, and any Quango involved in the Liverpool Waters Development, would welcome a key driver such as LFC to the Central Docks area in order to attract external investment into the region.

Re-locating LFC to the Docks would benefit the City of Liverpool as a whole as opposed to L4 and I'm quite sure that with this in mind, the City Council would be willing to pick up the tab for any area regeneration obligations that LFC have for the area of Anfield.

On the face of it therefore, the good business acumen demonstrated to date by the owners, maybe a trait that steers them towards re-locating in the Docklands.

I hope I'm way off the mark and any new stadium is built in Stanley park but given this current governments drive towards private sector enterprise and the economic incentives they put in place to enable this, I fear an alternative scheme in the Docklands cannot be ruled out until the first spade goes in the ground over at Stanley Park. Just a thought.

Ozone

I agree not sure if you have been reading my posts but basically your right.

My source informs me that £180m is the golden figure for naming rights. He also informs me that the club has 3 offers in principle that surpass this golden figure.

Million dollar questions for the sake of a bit of interesting banter: Who thinks Liverpool could win the premier league this season? Who's going to be happy with top 4 place?

I'm really starting to believe in the PL title, if we can stay with the top 3 before christmas and then really start getting this new suad gelling come January I really do think we can do it this year. We have strength in depth in this squad.

Man united are not a great team, they've still got weakness in a goalie and I think in defense too.
They are still good going forward but none can deny
they were lucky last season to win with that team, which has hardly improved this season. City look better to me, but does Mancini have the pedagree to win the PL? He's got to stop believing a draw is a good result and actually start beating top 4 teams. I think he will be out next season if he does not deliver the PL and maybe they'll buy Jose Moreno. Arsenal: my prediction is Wenger is the next in line for a job at Paris St Germain which would be great for him. Change there is long overdue. Spurs are good entertainment but I can't see them winning PL, they will be over the moon with fourth. Chelsea always have great expectations - but there you get a load of cash, you get one season or two to win the PL or your out on your arse - no manager there has any chance to build anything while that russian (more-money-than-football-sense) is making all the calls - also the first season in PL for Villas-Boas. That's going to be tough for them. I've got a sneaky fealing this is Liverpool's year. Come on you REDS!

RedAce

Realistically we are looking at finishing 3rd or 4th this season - which is good when you consider the amount of turbulence the squad has suffered in the last 12 months - transfers in and out, 3 managers, two sets of owners, all the court cases.

I am hoping they are in the title race till the end, but methinks it depends on the next three games as last year we got zero points from these games....if we get atleast 7 then the title race is on....it has never been a case of how we perform against the best teams! We normally lose out on mid table mediocre teams such as Stoke where as United always seem to beat these teams even when they are playing sh*te!

Killerpool

From original poster: I agree 3rd or 4th is realistic and I'd be over the moon with that and bacl playing CL. But I'm not expecting too many points between 1st and 4th place team this time around and what I'm saying is, with a strong finish, I could really believe we could nick it this season.
RedAce

I'm not ruling out winning it given the way we're playing. The next three games will, in my opinion, define our season. If we take 7 points from the next three games, I would say we are genuine title contenders. I believe we can roll over any of the big guns at Anfield. The test for us is against the likes of Stoke at the Brittania. We'll see on saturday what sort of character the teams made of.

I've already had a £300 bet with a Villa fan for top 3 but I do fancy us for the title.

Ozone

Ozone...did you just repeat what I said? lol

Killerpool

We are going to win it !!!!!! And that's the way we are going to play this season. Game by game, focusing on getting the maximum points every time. We can do it and we will.

Team V Stoke;

---------------------REINA--------------------

JOHNSON----CARRAGHER----AGGER----ENRIQUE

----------------LUCAS----ADAM---------------

KUYT--------------SUAREZ-----------DOWNING

-------------------CARROLL-------------------

Bench: Doni, Skrtel, Flanagan, Spearing, Henderson, Maxi, Bellamy

Sounds pretty close, but hendo will be in won't he? so long as people realise that this formation is only like this on paper, as soon as suarez pushes forward as he does, it's then a 4-4-2

Keep the ball on the deck. Stoke won't live with us. Andy on the bench. Spurs would be a better prospect for Andy.

Don't be surprised if Carroll starts but more for his height defending set pieces than for frightening the Stoke defenders. Suarez and Kuyt may also start to frighten the Stoke defence.

Has there been any progress on the prospects of a new stadium? Is building a new stadium a viable option in the current climate? Your group has indicated in the past that a ground-share with Everton is off the agenda — is this still the case?

I've seen a lot of talk recently about ground-sharing, but our position hasn't changed. There's no doubt that if a new stadium were to be built in Liverpool from a financial perspective - which is the major issue - a ground-share would be helpful for both clubs. But there doesn't seem to be any support for that from Red or Blue fans - at all. So how could that ever happen?

Here is John Henrys last reply to the question about redeveloped or build a new stadium now read it there is to many complications to redevelope anfield and we are currently looking to sell the naming rights!!

John Henry
We would love to expand Anfield, but there are enough local and regulatory issues to keep that avenue stalled for years with no assurances that once begun it would bear any fruit.
If Anfield cannot be expanded a new stadium is wonderful choice. But the fact is we already have 45,000 seats. If a new stadium is constructed with 60,000 seats you've spent an incredible sum of money to add just 15,000 seats.
If the cost is £300m for an extra 15,000 seats, that doesn't make any sense at all. Liverpool isn't London, you can't charge £1 million for a long-term club seat. And concession revenues per seat aren't that much different at Emirates from Anfield.
That's why the search is on currently for a naming-rights partner. And that could very well happen.

Eds & Reds,

Here's one for you on the topic of a new stadium. Imagine the scenario.....

LFC are to re-develop Anfield and (as another poster suggested earlier), this will be done by digging down as Barca did and widening the stands. This is a very real option and would allow us to achieve 70k plus seats in Anfield. Happy days!

It will take some time to achieve however, and we would most likely have to play our games in another stadium for 1 season. But where?!

Goodison is the obvious choice but controversial to say the least!

Where would we go?

Goodison
Ewood Park
Reebok Stadium
DW Stadium
Prenton Park
Deepdale

Probably turn out to be an irrelevant question, but an interesting angle I've not seen discussed yet! Any thoughts guys?

Red Gart

I dont know if digging down is possible, but i am sure everton would like the extra money they would make if we had to play a season away from home, also i think our owners would have looked at all possible opitions , very interesting to see what they have in store.........lfc

I would move our matches to Malaysia. The fans were terrific!

Hi Eds and all,

A question for all, between player sales and player purchases ( including the approx £30 mil off wage bill) does anyone know the rough amount of investment in players made by FSG?

I get the feeling they are more business savvy than previous owners and have had little outlay financially. If so we are definitely in the right hands and have a fantastic club business structure IMO.

Please post Eds as I am curious.

Many thanks

Just been looking at pictures of the squad training on the main LFC site and it occurred to me that you never see anyone wearing shin pads, but you can see tackles going in. Surely they should be wearing shin pads. I'm sure they've been told not to fly into the tackles but if I were manager I would still want them to be wearing shin pads.

Bored in work!

Sure. Why not give them frocks to wear as well.

They are professionals and team mates FFS. They would not harm one another. The only danger of an injury would be Bellamy's golf club ... :):):)

sorry bad joke.

In my opinion the original poster has a point. They should also all wear high viz jackets and hard hats and each morning fill out a training risk assesment. Good point BORED AT WORK! Plus those socks hanging limp are a trip hazzard and I would ban that ear flicking.

STAY SAFE

Just because they're professional and team mates doesn't mean they won't be tackling. My point was that there's no point in getting injured in training from a mis-timed tackle when wearing shin pads could prevent it.

The high vis jackets would be a good idea though!

Jackets? They look more like a sports bra

Morning Ed's

Im not wanting to start a riot of abuse on here but a genuine question for all REDS

If we had a choice of one of the two who would you pick.I want you to judge on ability and impact within the team ?
Luis Suarez
Fernando T

My choice would be EL Pistolero,He has all round versatility and can un lock defences prime example .The pass to Downing against BW.
El Nino was good but this guy is the next level.
Im also certain there are better things to come off El Pistolero

REDFORLIFE

On current form I would pick Suarez but the other day on the LFC channel they were showing some of Torres' goals and you do forget how good he was in his prime. It also reminds you how good Gerrard is as he sets up most of Torres' goals - I bet Torres would give anything for that kind of service now! The thing with Torres though is that if he didn't score he never really contributed much to the team whereas you get the feeling Suarez will score nearly as many as Torres did, but will also assist or play a significant part (Henderson against Bolton) in another 15 - 20 goals throughout the season which to me makes him a better all-round player.

JRG

The Torres of the first two seasons.

Suarez every time - El Nono, sorry but there is soo much more potential to come from Luis... and he's contracted LONG term so stop with the RM rumour crap

Hard one to call , I'd have saurez because he's a lot better with the ball at his feet.
But id say torres in his prime was a better finisher.
Saurez needs to relax in front of goal sometimes , he's to desperate to get a goal every game.

LAVERS

Nonsense. Suarez has outperformed Torres, even in his 1st 2 seasons. Suarez is far more than just a striker, he's a creator, a winger and an attacking midfielder as well. He is the whole package.

If you choose Judas over Luis, you are really deluded.

I expect Torres to join Athletico Madrid for just under 15 million after this season ends. Pretty much sums up my answer.

RenegadeRed

I'm a sucker for a provider rather than a finisher, and suarez has that quality over torres, torres is obviously the more accomplished player, but i'd rather suarez..... jesus, 2 years ago i would never imagine myself saying that, i honeslty didn't rate suarez, but he turned a massive corner in holland and uruguay, hence his amazing form and transfer to us.

I'd liked to seen them both play together, they are both different to each other

The two could have been so electric together, it's a shame.

I was juz thinking b4 manchester united ever won anything under Fergie, we were e dominant team under kenny. Up til when kenny left the club, he was more successful then any of the managers then. N younger too.

It made me wonder- if he hadn't left, wld the 90's and beyond have been ours instead? Afterall kenny did lead blackburn to victory over manchester united, rite?

I noe there were many varying factors n it's all hypothetical but I cnt help but wonder.

Anyway, it's great to hv the king back. And he easily has another 10-15yrs of management left, if he wants to.

Here's to the hope that the king can lead us to title number 19, 20, 21, 22... 30... n beyond.

Long may the king reign.

Hey can anyone plz sum up sterling, suso n coadys performances in the next gen match?
Indian Buzzer

All three had a stormer. Sterling capped his day with a nicely taken goal too.

BooDaBooze

Thanx mate. Btw is suso a cm or does play off the striker? Iv watched him on youtube n to me, it appears he plays a free role just like gerrard did during rafas time.
Indian Buzzer {Ed001's Note - he used to play that role, but lately he has been put into central midfield to try and learn some other aspects of the game.}

With the arrival Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates in the summer, our defence has undoubtedly been strengthened. While Enrique has already established himself as first choice left back within the first three games, there have been much debate on our central defence. Some say Carragher-Agger, some say Kelly-Agger(with Johnson at RB), some say Coates-Agger. I can't help but wonder, what happened to poor Martin Skrtel? This lad is at the moment, the most underrated player in the squad. While Adam, Henderson and Lucas seem to have won over most of their doubters, why is it that Skrtel, who had played every single league game last season, and in my opinion our best performing centre back last season, relegated to 5th choice, even 6th choice centre back? When he first joined under Rafa, I thought he did really well, being a no nonsense defender like Carra. He had clashed heads with Carra twice and in my opinion that is one of the reasons why is performances dipped. When Uncle Woy came in last season, his performances dipped even further as did everyone else in the squad. However when KK took over in Jan, I thought he improved a lot with Carra out injured, with him and Agger being paired in central defence. He may not be first choice centre back this season, and perhaps in some fan's eyes should not be, but I think his performance against Bolton showed why he should start ahead of Carra, who is ageing, or Coates, who is new and needs to be eased into the team, and Kelly, who's world class at right back. Whatever your opinion, let's not take away the fact that Skrtel is a proven international and Premier League player and give him the credit he deserves

Keith YNWA(sorry for the length of the post)

You need to get the balance right. People say cara has lost pace but he has never been quick. He can read the game so well he is always a yard ahead of the game (much like mccallister 10 years ago). Although it is arguable weather he is 1 of the best 2 centre halves at the club it's undeniable that he leads the back line better than anyone in the prem let alone the club. All them clean sheets we kept under rafa were due to a excellent keeper behind a ruler straight back line that rarely got caught playing players on side. Do not under estimate the importantance of this. Aside from that agger is a monster defender who can play football. If his injury record was better he'd be regarded as best in the prem

Skrtel's flexibility could make him play in the RFB too.
I wonder if he would not leave with the January transfer window.

Skrtel won me when he came in under Rafa. He was rock solid then, but suffered a serious dip in form next season. However, much of his bad performances are due to the whole team's problems with defending after Xabi and Masch left. I still rate Martin, and I believe he is an excellent squad player, it's just that Agger is in a better form nowadays, and Carra is, well, Carra! Coates will also come out good, but I believe Skrtel will stay and fight for his place, hope we keep him!

Skrtel may have played every minute of every game last season, but that was in part due to Agger's injury problems. Remember, he played every minute of every game in a team which finished 6th!

Is it a good or a bad thing to have on your LFC CV?

He's a good squad player, but its Cara & Agger for me until an injury occurs, then hopefully we will see Coates come in and prove his worth. From there, its whoever is in possession.

i would like to know what all the posters on here say, go for new ground , or stay and rebuild, its such a big thing , i would love to hear why we should stay or go, please post -long or short , its our future we are talking about, thanks........lfc {Ed001's Note - I would stay and rebuild myself, moving ground should be a last resort, Anfield means too much.}

I trust that the owners and board will make the best decision for the club, however, I just cant imagine watching the players walk out on television and not seeing the "This is Anfield" sign that they walk under and touch. My heart is with Anfield stay, but my head is impartial.

LIVERPRES

Stay...if we can redevelope, as Macca has stated, two of the stands over the next few years then hopefully we can carry on redeveloping the other stands in years to come, as ManUtd did several years ago...

NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!

It's very tricky. All the sentimentalists (myself included) would like to see Anfield regenerated to become a world-class stadium capable of cramming an extra 30 thousand or so fans in. But the harsh reality is that football is a different monster to how it was in the 70s. I'm sure the majority of fans (especially the older ones) would like to see us keep with tradition, keep seeding the hallowed turf, then patch up and extend the venue that has seen so much history and glory. Problem is that football now goes beyond the sentimental wishes of fans and historians, and is now dictated by revenue, advertising, corporate obedience, infrastructure, branding, the stock exchange and international business.
The decision-makers at the top need to plan for the next 5-10 years so they can maximise the revenue and make Liverpool FC successful both off and on the pitch. If that means unscrewing the 'This Is Anfield' sign and unbolting the Shankly Gates to move them to the new 90 thousand capacity Marks & Spencer stadium at Stanley Park.....then all us romantic nostalgists have unfortunately got to accept progress and get with the programme.
As much as I desperately want LFC to remain at Anfield, I think we would be better served playing in the equivalent of the Emirates than the equivalent of Elland Rd.

cozinoz

Move to Stanley Pk, love Anfield but progress is progress, i am one of the lucky ones and had a season ticket for the last 20 odd years but there are thousands who desperatly want one, these supporters deserve their chance or we risk losing a generation of support.

What your all not seeing is that if we redevelop the main stand and the Anfield road, we will essentially have a fairly new ground, as the other two sides have recently been renewed. If they make it wider and dig down like Barcelona did then you could add thousands of seat.

Sooty

Face the fact. If we need to compete with the top, we need a much larger stadium. 65,000 is not enough. We need a stadium with the potential to host over 85,000 spectators. Can Anfield be redeveloped to cope with that numbeR? No.

New Stadium. {Ed001's Note - there is nothing to stop it being 85k, that is a fallacy, the exact same issues would exist building a new stadium as redoing Anfield. There would still be the problem of access to and from the stadium. That has to be fixed either way, so please stop trying to use that as a determining factor. Both involve the regeneration of the surrounding areas, including transport links. The question is whether to do it all in one big rush with a new stadium or whether to gradually increase the size.}

I'm with ed001, isn't the world money hungry enough, wouldn't it be a good statement to take tradition and soul over cash, f**k financial bloating, let's do things our own way and be one of 2 big clubs in the world that remain true to their traditions (barca being the other one).

When you sed unscrew th tia sign it sent a shiver down my spine

Team to play Stoke:

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Enrique
Lucas Adam
Henderson Suarez Downing
Carroll

People need to remember that Stoke is always a physical game and Suarez will get mauled on his own. Andy will thrive on these games!

Henderson cannot handle being mauled, I'll use Kuyt instead.

I'll alos look to bring in Coates depending on last minute thoughts.

O'seunfunmi (Anfield Red)

Still think we should have nellamy in the team stoke prob has one of the slowest def in the league bellamy's run and general pace along with suarez and downing will destroy there backline.

I'm a massive fan of the NFL (Patriots) Ed mate, i know you are not. The season starts tonight and if you get enough people interested, you could maybe start a page page for it. I'll not hold my breath mate because i think i'm the only person on here, that likes it.

Or has it been suggested already? If so i apologise, thanks.
