Use our rumours form to send us liverpool transfer rumours.

I have to say that I am privileged to have witnessed some sublime attacking play from us this season at home. and the seat I occupy is gold-dust the way we're playing in the first-half at the moment!
The shot which hit the post from Suarez yesterday is still shaking my bones!
And Sturridge's goal (over the shoulder) against the blue-noses was unreal.
Add to this the pace and trickery of Sterling, the vision of Coutinho and the threat at corners of Skrtel and Toure and we are looking like the "Liverpool of old".
I was lucky enough (and just about young enough) to see Kevin Keegan's debut and have seen many, many greats in the red shirt of Liverpool. But, I have to say, Luis Suarez is the most exciting player (and controversial) that I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
If we do lose him in the Summer I would be gutted if we got less than £80m. the man is priceless!
But let's not even think about that. the League title isn't beyond us and fourth place looks like a minimum at the moment.
Come on you Reds!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sturridge's goal v Everton was rated goal of the month on motd, great effort!

Ed001 and fellow reds, what do you think is going to happen to lucas? I have no idea where he is going to fit in when he comes back; especially if Henderson, Gerrard and Coutinho maintain this form. Would love to see Gerrard given a chance to play further forward though

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I expect him to slot in fine, no one plays every game these days.}

Lucas Leiva is a very important part of the squad. what does he have to do to be accepted?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas is quality mate I love him to bits, but let's look at it, SASAS are not getting dropped with the form they're in. Henderson is vital to our team, fantastic intensity, work rate but does need to work on his final product - he is not getting dropped. Gerrard is not getting dropped at all, Rodgers doesn't have the balls. Coutinho? only dropable player, and even he is starting to hit form again.

Lucas is fantastic, but I dunno where he is going to go tbh.

Agree0 Disagree0

The problem is you're all looking at it in terms of starting 11 when you need to be looking at it as a squad, which is what football is these days - a squad game. Rotation will be key next year if we get Europe.

Agree0 Disagree0

''I expect him to slot in fine, no one plays every game these days''

What about Hendo there ed 001?

Just messing.

There will be plenty of rotation and changes in formations so Lucas will be fine.

Agree0 Disagree0

No player can play 70 games in a season. There is always a spot for someone who looks like they might miss out on a place.

We have to hope United are blindly naive & keep moyes for as long as possible in the same way we let souness destroy us

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Gotta give credit where credit is due. He inherited and aging team that had been milked dry of their winning days by one of the best managers in the game. He was always going to be rebuilding, especially replacing saf. Careful what you wish for.

Agree0 Disagree0

Be careful what we wish for do you really think Moyes will be any good.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think he will last long there but simply because they don't have a good team. There aren't too many managers that could help that team. Their back line is awful.

Agree0 Disagree0

My dream was to always visit Old Trafford but I believe that I need to cross it off my bucket list.

Skrtel's right however, we need to focus on the next 4 games. 10 points for a top 4 form team or 12 for a title winning squad!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Next game is the only important one. Focus on Fulham and nothing else.

We must have a cup final mindset from now until the end of the season.

Both the players and the fans.

One thing is for sure, if Liverpool bring that intensity to every game between now and the end of the season, we will achieve our goals and maybe more.

Hi Eds and Fellow Reds

What are your thoughts on next week's cup tie against Arsenal? Do we field a full strength side, bearing in mind the league is our priority?
I personally prefer if we blooded some of our youngsters (SOME of our youngsters - for those who can't read ie Stevie8) than risk injury to our regular first teamers. for me, getting top4 if far far more important than the FA cup! Without top4. not bear thinking about.
Please don't comment about romance of FA cup, I understand all that, but CL football is membership to the elit, please understand.
sorry if I'm sounding patronizing, but some of the replies I've had did make me think I'm dealing with children. maybe they are!
YNWA. even the kids! lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd rather win the FA cup so no chance rest them. Crazy

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd play out strongest team, we aren't in Europe anyway the games on a Sunday then we play the following Sunday, we can't risk them overpowering us I'm sure they'll play a strong team after that embarrassing defeat.

Agree0 Disagree0

The way I see it is that we have 13 FA cup finals to go to the end of the season and we are still in with an outside chance of the golden prize. The next FA cup tie is just a distraction and we are best out if it.

Agree0 Disagree0

The FA cup is not a distraction to Liverpool at all. Field a full strength squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Will the Champions League last 16 be a distraction this time next season? Of course not!

Just some reflections from the game.

In terms of team performance it was at least as good as when we tore apart Forest 5-0 with Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge up front.

Players who impressed the most were. the whole team! It was one of those games where we clicked!

Individually.
Mignolet - Did everything expected very well. Not that arsenal threw much at us!
Flanagan - Every game he gets better and better, a hard worker, tough competitor and good defender and had a very good game.
Skrtl - two goals and hard as nails.
Toure - played well, motivated and organised.
Cissokho - has taken time to settle and this was his best game, keep it up lad!
Henderson - was his usual effervescent self, a real
dynamo in midfield and showed why he is such an important player, Ronnie Whelan mk2!
Gerrard - OK he gave away the penalty. But the game was won by then and Gerrard had been immense. Didn't think he could do the job but he is working on it.
Coutinho - was brilliant, great through ball to Sturridge and some really great footwork.
Stirling - great display of wing play, 2 goals, caused a headache all afternoon for an experienced international, Salah who?
Suarez - Amazing and unlucky not to score, £40m+£1 looks a little daft now eh?
Sturridge - love the guy, goals, pace and skill. £12m is fast becoming a bargain. Don't believe the nonsense about him having an attitude problem, he's decent lad away from football and is very focused on the pitch.

Overall if we keep this up we can go far. Well done BR was gutted we didn't buy a DM but he is getting every player to play to the top of their game.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have to say this is great post. The performance was a devastating attacking formula of pace, movement, and skill.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 21:06:41
I've got to be honest, after watching some of the players we were linked with the past few years, I'm glad we didn't sign them. I've watched Spurs several times this year and I'm not sure that any of the players they signed that we were linked with would be in our starting lineup. I certainly don't mean any disrespect to Spurs or their players. They are only 3 points behind us and had a huge win today. Am I wrong in my analysis? What am I missing?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You're spot on mate. I wouldn't take soldado over sas, erikssen over coutinho, de jong over Stevie G or Lucas, Walcott over sterling. Could go on all day. They just wouldn't get in the side.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 21:00:38
I appreciate our owners have forked out millions over the past few years on signings but surely the wisest financial investment right now would be to help pay to extend David Moyes' contract. I believe he only has 6 years left on it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I wonder if they can afford to sack him

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 20:19:59
It's a worse than horrible thought but if we finish 4th & Manchester United win the CL we will b excluded from the CL, probably lose Louis and all will have been in vain.
Fulham result MORE important than arsenal away in FA Cup. thoughts?
We must finish 3rd.
Come on you mighty REDS!
2009 Captain

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Would that be the same Manchester United that drew with the bottom of the league team (at home)? They're hardly looking like CL title contenders. Don't loose too much sleep over that one mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd say their odds of getting CL next year are better through winning the CL this year then they are finishing top 4. They've only got to do well in 7 games to do so and personally I'll breathe a little easier if Olympiacos manages to drop them out of contention.

Agree0 Disagree0

RDL seriously?

Man United to win the champions league? Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Man City, Bayern Munich.

They might get past one of them but I just can't see them going all the way.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well, like I said I think the odds are better, I never said likely. Call it 5% chance to win CL and 2% to make top 4 (my BS odds based on nothing whatsoever).

Point being, if I were in Moyes shoes, I think that's about the only thing that can save his season baring a monumental collapse by us, Everton, and Spurs so I fully expect United to take those games very, very seriously.

Agree0 Disagree0

You guys forget, Mata is not eligible for champs league either.

Agree0 Disagree0

We were written off many times in our run to Istanbul.
Pundits said "They cannot do it"
Teams and players raise there game for these kind of matches (and yes Utd will have to raise the bar a long way from what we have seen this year)
But let us not forget that while there in the competition there is a chance they could win it.
3 points needed against Fulham and maybe Utd can do us a favour against Arsenal (who seem to be stumbling at the minute) and we may just catch them for 3rd.
vrcomp
Y.N.W.A

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, that potential outcome can't be dimissed why they are still in it. We have to go balls out to win every match and achieve higher than 4th.

Agree0 Disagree0

We had a decent manager then vrcomp, can you really say the same thing about them?

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and to add to my point, that was Rafa's first season and this too, is Moyes first season, yet United have looked pretty good in Europe this year.

Agree0 Disagree0

You guys forget, 2005, Liverpool finished 5th in the league but still won the Champions League. We were hardly brilliant in the league that year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Let us also not forget that Rafa Benitez was a manager who had won 2 La Liga titles in 3 seasons with Valencia. He had also won the Europa the year before.
Contrast that to Moyes. A manager who has spent a decade treading water, not winning anything, who's only European experience is losing a Champions league qualifier.
There is a lot of difference in the clubs and the managers. Rafa coming to LFC was a breath of fresh air after Houllier had lost his way. Moyes is a little boy lost who's just taken over after the most successful domestic manager of all time retired.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 20:18:41
I know it's of little consequence now but anyone else onto the fact the first free kick of the game yday was not in the right place from where the foul occurred, a good couple of feet closer inside the pitch, it's small things like that, Gerrard may have not crossed as he did, he may have but I suppose amongst the bigger picture it is irrelevant, anyway who's next on what I'm smoking ha

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Skrtel was also offside so the goal should not have been allowed. It should have just been a 4-1 master class instead

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah skrtel was offside but it came off an arsenal player

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you need to watch the action in slow motion, and learn the offside rule - level when the ball is played is ON side, not OFF, not one of the pundits/experts said the goal was offside, all without exception that I heard or watched agreed that there was no offside.
Get over yourselves and stop looking for negatives all the time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually Skrtel wasn't offside. He wasn't offside when the first ball came in and, as a previous poster has explained, the ball was flicked on by an Arsenal player. No wonder referees get so much stick - too many people don't even know the rules.

Agree0 Disagree0

Wow it gets vicious on here pretty easily. Where are those polite gooners when you need constructive criticism. I didn't realise it had been touched by an Arsenal defender so the goal was legit. However, if you watch the replay instead of blindly criticising, you will see Skrtel is a yard offside when the ball is played.
To be honest with you, who cares. We won and it was a great result. I was just joking that we demolished Arsenal regardless of a contentious decision but I guess this isn't the right place to jest. Now where are those pleasant Arsenal fans?

Agree0 Disagree0

It was offside, there was no seconds phase there. An arsenal player simply getting a glance on it doesn't affect that Martin Skrtel obtained an advantageous position as the ball was kicked.

That was some shot by Suarez that struck the woodwork if it had gone in would have been goal of the season for sure

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The free kick was better 2nd half, if that had went in it would have been goal of the decade.

Agree0 Disagree0

You could see how much he wanted his goal too. That's 2 games without one I'm expecting him to really rip Fulham apart on Wednesday. definitely going to stick a few quid on him getting 3

Even with Juan, the MATA has not changed. Tom can't play CLEVERLY, Ashley has failed to mature; his game is still YOUNG. Antonio is only good for clubs like VALENCIA. If you have an average LB like Patrice, you will never EVRA win anything. And let me warn you, if you fail to make top four and give David MORE YEARS even Wayne will be ROONING away from the club.

Have fun guys. YNWA!

Well done on the win yesterday lads.Destroyed us. Started so slowly by the time we woke up we was 4-0 and the game was over. I hope you've just watched bent head in from 3 yards. 4th is now urs in my opinion. Especially if we can get a vital win on weds against them.

Agree0 Disagree0

He missed a sitter. Raheem Sterling anyday

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolutely inconsequential to me what Salah does.

I'm more concerned with what we do and right now, Stirling is looking a good player, pace, trickery and an end product. How good is it to see a lad work his way into the team from a raw 16 year old?

And I hope Suarez will stay with us for a long time
Question for the eds
If we reach UCL next season do you think Suarez will stay?

One quiz for fellow supporters here
Anyone remember, what was the shirt number of following ex Liverpool players when they were still with us?
Barry Venison
Jim Magilton
Julian Dicks
David Burrows

Indonesian Red

I remember Burrows wearing the number 6 and 3 Shirts Venison 4 and 2 Dicks number 3 Magilton never made an appearance for us though he wore the number sixteen shirt on the bench.

Hey Ed. Just have a question. If we were to finish 3rd, and the team in fourth or below (arsenal, maybe united) wins the champions league, would we be bumped to the qualifiers or would they start there?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Bumped - and the same is true with 4th place and Europa.}

09 Feb 2014 14:33:58
Morning guys.

I have a nice afternoon stroll down memory lane for you.

I was having a chat with a mate the other day and we managed to end up on about players that 'didn't make it' at Liverpool - but will always be remembered.

Anyway, I thought of Sinama Pongolle and his two goals that won us the game against Luton in the 3rd round of the FA Cup in 2006 - and the rest as they say, is history.

Just thought i'd post it on here as a nice, friendly topic for debate on a sunday afternoon.

Will be interested to hear the thoughts of ed01/02 and other supporters. maybe even Dagenham Gooner. maybe.

Have a good sunday.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Neil Mellor's goal against Arsenal alone must get him inclusion in this. It wasn't the only important goal he scored for us either.}

Good call. It was a screamer if I remember correctly.

Agree0 Disagree0

N'gog for carrying us in the Europa League under RH before KD dropped him for no good reason? I still think N'gog was better than Carroll for us in terms of price and role in the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Djimi Traore surely
That goal line clearance against Milan was heroic!

How about Dossena and that chip he had to top off the 4-1 at OT?

Other than those mentioned . Igor Biscan for his midfield performance away against Deportivo in the 2005 season. although never for playing centreback.

Ronny Rosenthal for an excellent hat trick and worst miss award too.

Sterling along side Sturridge is a must for England in Brazil this summer and Henderson has improved vastly too so I wouldn't be disappointed if he made it as well

Believable0 Unbelievable0

On current form is there a better all round English cm than Henderson at the moment? Gerrard's playing well, Wilshire I like a lot. Cleverley, Carrick, Lampard? don't think so. I've had him inked in my squad for 12 months.
A front 3 Of Sterling, Sturridge and Rooney could be very exciting. behind them i'd play Wilshire, Hedo and Gerarrd.

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope none of them goes to Brazil ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Oxlade isn't too bad himself, but he just came back from his injury, might take him abit of time to get back to his best, but he did score two goals!

there are a few wingers vying for the spot but with Roy as manager, I still think he's going to go with ashley young and milner.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I wouldn't take more than 2 out field players aged over 28, and plan for France 2016 and Russia 2018.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gunnner 62 argree with you there's no point in bringing the likes of cole milner lampard carrick unless they are going to start an actually get time on the pitch we need to take young players who are playing week in week out in the premier league the like of shaw barkley sterling hendo rodriguez oxlade wilshere if he bucks up his form.

I know most are rooting for Arsenal to beat United on Wednesday, but personally I hope it's the other way around.
If United and ourselves win, that would leave us just 2 points behind 3rd place.
If I thought 3rd was unattainable I'd root for Arsenal too, but a quick look at Arsenals fixtures and I can see them dropping a few points in the next couple of weeks.
I'm not saying we can win the league or anything, but we can certainly aim higher than 4th. If we keep up our momentum against Fulham in the week, we could find ourselves a lot closer to the top than we thought possible.
Keep the faith!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You may be right in theory, but could never shout for them! And besides, we really want them out of the champions league, so come on the Gunners!

Agree0 Disagree0

This is a prime example of how fans and supporters outside of Merseyside never quite grasp the rivalry.

It doesn't make you less a supporter, but my God how it makes you look stupid.

When you refer to "we" you refer to a very, very, small minority of fans with an attitude like that.

I'm not interested in any other results but only concerned with that of Liverpool Football Club - and if the form of the club continues we are guaranteed top-four.

Agree0 Disagree0

I want the gunners to win myself.
There is little difference if we finish 3rd or 4th. but a massive difference between 4th and 5th. United, spurs and Everton all have it in them to overtake us still.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good point MIKEY1985!

Top 4 is the priority! Get that and push on.

Agree0 Disagree0

But, first we have to beat Fulham.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, and those games have often proved more difficult than those against the bigger teams. Let's hope this weds is more successful than the WBA game

Agree0 Disagree0

I live outside merseyside and could never get myself to support united. ever
A draw will be a perfect result but if there is to be a winner I would prefer the gunners to get the win

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 16:12:03
I totally agree that if I lived in Liverpool I would probably feel differently, but to say I'm making myself look stupid for wanting my team to finish as high as possible seems rather uncalled for.
Like it or not, we won't go any further without teams above us dropping points, and United are hardly a threat to us right now are they?
When I say 'we' daveybootle, I simply mean those who support Liverpool, whether you wish to include or exclude yourself from that is your choice.

I want the teams above us to slip up so we can finish higher.
If this makes me stupid somehow, I'll accept that!
I think calling me stupid over this is pretty petty of you tbh. Can't we not just revel in the win, whilst daring to dream of a 'higher than 4th place finish?'
Or would you limit our potential success this season Just to spite United? Who barring a miracle are already well off the pace for 4th.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 16:26:43
Let's put it into perspective here guys, I'm not going to be sitting in a United shirt.
My point was simply, Arsenal losing will be beneficial to us.
So whoever they play, ATM, I don't want them to pick any points up.
Let's not forget Spurs finished 4th and it wasn't enough, I know it's highly unlikely but it could happen again,
And the potential banana skin of a qualifier, again unlikely we would lose but to say there's no difference between 4th and 3rd would be misguided.
There would also be a small financial benefit to finished higher.
Somehow my point managed to become 'I support united'

I see it as being simple. The three clubs above us drop points, we can get higher. If they don't, we can't.
Despite overriding feeling towards the scum, if they can somehow benefit us, then that's pretty sweet right?
I'd hate to think we somehow made them happy,

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't write off United until it's mathematically impossible welshboy.

Agree0 Disagree0

As a self respecting Liverpool fan, you should never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever want united to win. even if they are playing everton.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 19:20:49
To be fair, upon reflection I can see where the reaction has come from.
It's purely a benefit to us reason, but yeah fair point.
Not writing them off per say Mikey, if we can claw back a few points to climb higher there's no reason they can't too, I'm just hoping our own form will be enough to keep us as far away as we are now, if not higher.
It's not that I want the to win, I just want to close the gap on Arsenal.
The wording on that was probably my fault though.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think a draw may be helpful then neither of them get the three points. Does that work for everyone?

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Feb 2014 13:16:20
EDS if you could pick 3 players that we could bring in an realistic players I mean lol who would they be an what area would they play to improve the team, the reason I ask is that I think that we are only 3 maybe 4 top players away from being a very good team.

Eds fellow reds, great result yesterday, but now that arsenal are on the ropes with there tough games comin up, I think we should be talking about third not fourth, if we were to get third in the league we wouldn't need to play a qualifier .or has that rule changed since our last champs league season .

Amazing result yesterday still on a high!

Does anyone still think we are title contenders? There is still a lot of games left and we have all the big teams still coming to us and we are on a mad one at home! I really do think we can come close we are 6 points behind less games to play!

Top 4 is priority but aim for the top and if we fall behind great top 4 is still amazing! What do you guys think?

It's not impossible, but winning the league would mean arsenal, city and Chelsea losing points. We have put on much better displays than Chelsea and arsenal, and in my opinion played much better football, but they have been more consistent than us, which of course is key to winning the league. Whilst Chelsea drew against west ham, I'm sure this will be a one off, although this has been our best season for years, we are no stranger to drawing games we should be winning. The other teams will be pushing on to finish in the top places, as will we. If we can beat Chelsea and City at home then I'd say we have a chance, as long as in between those matches we can put a stop to the careless mistakes against the likes of Villa and WBA.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree that the 3 above us need to stop points but considering man c away form has been poor and we out played them at home seems a very possible 3 points. Chelsea will be the toughest but as you said not impossible. I really do think if we can make sure we win against the smaller teams then we can come somewhat close!

Agree0 Disagree0

No but if we beat both city and Chelsea then it will be very close.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think I've said this before but we will win the league this year and nothing has changed that opinion. we will beat most teams and by the time city come to anfield they will be running scared. I still believe there is more to come from our team and I think Brendan said at the start of his reign was to make anfield a fortress again and by god is he going some way to doing so. it has been a pleasure watching him enforce his ethic on the team which I felt we had lost for some time, all Liverpool players need to play for their shirt and I believe for the first time in decades these players are doing it regularly. dare I mention when we score and rodgers celebrates it reminds me of a certain Mr Shankley. onwards and upwards

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea and City will both have champions league matches which will effect them. We need to make sure that we pick up points when they fail and give them a taste of what spurs, Everton and arsenal got.

Regarding safe standing, I think we should bring it back, I was at Hillsborough that fateful day and the fact is that standing did not cause the deaths of our 96, it was the fact that too many of us were standing in a penned in area.

Yesterday was like a morgue at Anfield, certainly standing up would bring the atmosphere back, I know the Kop used to hold about 24.000 fans and yes during the 70-80's young fans did get carried out, however after Hillsborough the capacity was lowered to about 18,000 without any problems at all.

alan50

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - and 18000 means a lower revenue, plus difficulty watching the game, so why bother? Also there was problems, even after capacity got lowered, so please don't make up stories to back up your opinion. People still got crushed, just like they do at pop concerts etc, where there isn't overcrowding, it is not just that which is the issue. It is human nature to surge forward when an event happens, to try and look closer. With seats, they create a natural break to stop people just crushing those in front (though I can remember celebrating God's last gasp winner against Newcastle in the second 4-3 game and ending up about 6 or 7 rows down even with seats, due to the surge forward), without seats, even ends up crushed at the front or piling onto the pitch. It still happens with seats, it is just worse without them.
Oh and the atmosphere at Anfield was far from a morgue yesterday.}

Anfield like a Morgue yesterday?

Don't agree with that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001, Surely falling down 6-7 rows with seats is far more dangerous than without, as for revenue you will get more people in you would not lose out on revenue, don't know how may seats there are at present in the Kop but certainly not 18,000.and I still say with the right barriers on the terraces the Kop could hold 20,000 people standing safely

alan50

Agree0 Disagree0

Like a morgue think a hearing aid u need not stands!

Agree0 Disagree0

The old KOP was problematic in my experience, viewing the game and trying to prevent getting caught on one of the barriers when the surges occured was a constant concern, and most worrying was the time when I ended up flat on back in the KOP after drunken supporters arrived late for the LFC v Manchester United game (1-2 with an Ian Rush beauty) and could not even keep their balance forcing everyone to hold them up which took its toll and resulted in a very dodgy moment .

Ed 01 I seen your reply about someone to push sterling.

IMO that person is ibe.

For me he has the ability to beyond the level that sterling can acheive. Although I must say sterling is finally playing upto all the hype that was made about him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I agree, but that is still only 2 players for up to 4 forward positions, plus Sturridge and Sterling. What happens when we have injuries, suspensions or loss of form? We still need more options.}

09 Feb 2014 08:02:12
Sterling is certainly pushing Henderson for the most improved player this season. Although to be fair Henderson's good performances have become a normal thing and you don't normally say Henderson's performance have improved anymore.

a question for ed001 if I may,

1. Skrtel has been pretty solid so far, and i'm not saying this because of his 2 goals, but admittedly he has been pretty good and actually better than i'd like to admit. He is prone to mistakes but to be fair so is any other defender. In your opinion, (im hoping you feel the same as I do that he has been pretty good so far) what has made him better this season? Tactical changes in defensive style to suit him? or has he found a way to fit his strengths into our style of play? Would love to hear ed001 and others too, opinions on this.

2. what's your opinion in Gerrard's progress to his new position? IMO he has been improving, some loopholes here and there but I have to admit I truly thought it would take him more games to learn the role like he is doing now. I admit that I also wanted him to be benched at some parts earlier in the season, (not to totally put him away from the team to be fair, I only wanted players being played by merit and there were times when Stevie was abit out of form).

3. Could Coutinho continue his form like this? I have to say so far this season (before the last 3 games) Coutinho hasn't really lived up to his form last season, and many were asking for Joe Allen to replace him against Arsenal (I was one of them too, but its only because I thought we needed to be good defensively as we are good offensively, and Coutinho in the past hasn't been that good on his defensive side of the game), and in the Arsenal game similar to Sterling, Coutinho definitely has improved a lot of aspects to his game, especially defending, intercepts. IMO some of this improvements are also because BR has moved back to 4-3-3 and moved him to the middle from the 4-2-2-2 when he was playing on the left.

4. I remembered you said BR has managed to improve our 2nd half bad performances. I think its because we have been putting high intensity in the first half hour and then slowly move into counter attacking before we lose our steam, what do you think?

apologies if the questions are too many ed001, but lately questions have been aimed at you (mainly not regarding transfers, but about the team) and I do like reading your replies, so take your time to answer the question, I don't mind waiting for a response :).

other posters are welcome to share opinions too!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - 1. I am still not convinced by him defensively, though he has been playing better of late, we haven't exactly been under a lot of pressure in those games. Everton and Arsenal we blew away and they showed nothing, West Brom just never turned up. He does look to be developing an understanding with Kolo, which is a huge part of defending, so I wouldn't drop him right now, but he is still a worry for me. It is just we can't tell if he has improved until we are facing a team that are giving us a challenge. Not a team that us penned back defending deep, as that suits him, I mean a team that breaks on us, quickly springing forward, as that is what he struggles against.

2. He has always been able to raise his game against the big teams, it is good to see that he can do so even playing in a different role. He has been getting better and better, but now he has to maintain (or even improve) on that level, no matter who we are facing. Right now, apart from the rash tackle which gave away the pen, he has been pretty much excellent. Long may it continue.

3. Yes. This is how he should be playing every week, and how he can play every week, it is up to him to keep his head in the game. I definitely agree he suits playing as part of the midfield 3, especially in the one behind two system we employed yesterday, as opposed to the two behind one we quite often employ. With the one behind, the pressing has to be done higher up the pitch as that is where your players are, so he is getting the ball with players more advanced and offering him more options to play them in.

4. I think we have managed to maintain our pressing later in the games, such as yesterday, as the game was dwindling away towards the end, Arsenal scored and we tore into them again. It put a halt on any thought of a comeback because they were again put under pressure on the ball and they wilted. It would have been very easy to continue to coast at 5-1 and allow them a sniff of a recovery.}

Enjoyed this post, good stuff Kaizer and Ed001.

Thanks for the reply ed001 appreciate it.

fair point on Skrtel, ill have to see how he fares when we get attacked. but I honestly think despite being quite fragile in our defence he has been ever present.

and I do agree about gerrard, scary to think if he truly puts in a shift every single game, at his age, he is still very very good, a mark of a world class player I guess. but the big games are the kind of games players go for, can't really blame him for that.

heres hoping we fight on till the end of the season.

Obviously to get top 4 finish we need to be taking 3 points against the lesser sides, still think we missed the best opportunity of a top 4 finish by not signing anyone last month.

Was just wondering in terms of summer targets, obviously with cissokho going back and Johnson not being offered a new contract we will probably look to sell.
Clearly then we would probably need to look for a full back for both sides. Could you tell me anyone we have looked at, iv searched and few names have come up but not very recent so was just wondering who might be some realistic full back targets

Although we didn't sign a winger in the transfer window, I think that our pursuing one may have had a positive effect on Sterling, giving him the kick up the arse that maybe was needed. A young player that needs to be reminded how good he can be without being big headed IF he works hard. A reminder that no one (except Suarez) is safe. Nice to see Ibe get a run out as well. My first game was way back in 72 so not a play station, or whatever it is, fan. Wind and rain, sun and snow, home and away fan for many years and I can honestly say that the only thing missing now is consistency. Maybe a couple of other young, eager to prove, players to pressure the first teamers, and we will grow into a more consistent team. I trust in Rogers and I like the way we are going about things. Having been to all those European finals and other big and minor games I think that those trips are maybe not that far away again. Belief and support. Not just in the big games. We can do it. Also a big shout out to the regular away fans. The away support has made an old fan very happy and proud. You have a lot to live up to to follow what we did for our team. Keep believing lads and lasses, let the good times roll. Remember that song, I get knocked down, but I get up again, ain't nobody going to keep us down.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

On Sterling, he was already playing well before we pushed for Salah or Konoplyanka.

Agree0 Disagree0

I know that Stering was playing well but a reminder now and again would not go amiss. He is still only young and it takes time to get it in the head, to be mentally strong and to be consistent. Still, no complaints.

2 goals and 7 assists in 17 starts now for Suso.

I wonder if he will go on loan again next season?

Agree0 Disagree0

I watched the game, ignoring the stats . he did well, but he also played from the right and at times had no involvement in the game as you may imagine Almeria defended or the game drifted.
He did look bright when in possession but he needs to improve if he wants to get in our first team. Sometimes the extra touch, or trying to beat the extra man. much like Coutinho not long ago. needs to get his head up for the pass more, also needs to improve his shooting.

But, i'm a big believer in Suso and the regular games are helping him improve.

Hi Eds 001 & 002.

Two questions;

Did Liverpool ever look at Neil Taylor as an option for LB. Only reason I ask is obviously Rodgers knows the player well and during Januray Cissokho was pretty awful. Seems as though he could have been a relatively cheap option to improve that position. And possibly available given Davies has taken that spot at Swansea.

Secondly I read a lot of responses from the two of you saying that Liverpool wouldn't be able to attract players of a certain caliber. After our thrashing of Arsenal I can't help thinking we really will finish top 4 this season. If we do finish 4th do you think players we may not have previously been able to sign will see LFC as an option. I can't see why you wouldn't dream to play for Liverpool regardless of CL. But surely with CL football on the calender for next season we could really reinforce the squad this next transfer window.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of interest in Taylor. And I don't recall saying Liverpool cannot attract players of a "certain calibre".}

I'm sure there was rumoured interest in Taylor in Rodgers first January window but the player had a bad injury which put him out for months (? Leg break). I don't know if he's ever regained his consistency.

Rodgers deserves credit for the defensive changes he has made to the team. He knows he hasn't got the quality within the squad, therefore, he is using the players he has got to their strengths.

Flanagan and Cissokho are good at defending, but not so effective going forward, therefore he has made sure that they concentrate mainly on defending. He has also got the forwards and midfielders constantly closing down the opposition and winning back possession, which is very important in relieving the pressure from our defenders.

My only issue is that we need to take that positivity both home and away for the remainder of the season. No matter who the opposition are, it is crucial that for the next 14 games or so, we play at same level as we did against Arsenal and Everton in every game.

Red Rum

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree. I wish our approach to away games could be as positive. We've gone from sublime vs Everton to tentative and mediocre vs WBA and then sensational vs Arsenal. Is there a psychological issue regarding being up for it in the 'big' games or is it merely a different tactical approach to away games? We wasted 2 points against the Baggies by not pressing home the advantage and my only concern is that we don't approach the Fulham game in the same way. Come on Red men, let's seal fourth place and look at catching the top 3 instead of looking over our shoulder.

Raheem has from now until May to prove to BR that we do not need to sign a world class Left Winger, and I have to say if he keeps on at the level we see today I don't see any reason why he won't, he would effectively free up funds for other areas of the team, thoughts eds & reds?

It's exciting to think we have a rejuvenated Borini & Suso returning in summer, should sterling carry on like this surely there isn't a need for extravagant spending in this area?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - sorry I don't see that, we still need someone to push him for a place, or to play two strikers and two wingers. Also cover for injuries and loss of form. We need a forward regardless, in my opinion.}

Agree ed01

Agree0 Disagree0

If we qualify for CL we need to think about strength in depth. When Moses returns to Chelsea, Sterling will be our only senior winger. How can we expect him at 19 years of age to play every league game, every CL game and every cup game?

We will also need a strong bench, especially for games like the West Brom game last week where we needed to bring on an impact player to come on and help us ensure maximum points.

This squad is more than capable of getting us 4th, but to challenge at the highest level you need to have a strong squad not just a strong starting XI.

Eds and Others

Where do you think the team realistically needs strengthening?

As good as Flanno has been, at 21 can we expect him to maintain his performances. Which leaves Glen Johnson who I think is out of contract in the summer? Do we expect him to stay or move on?

Center Halves: I do not see us needing players in this position and probably expect us to lose 1 or 2 players from this position.

Left Back, is an obvious weakness and needs to be looked at.

Midfield is a difficult one:
Obviously Gerrard is being molded into a quarter back type role. Where does this leave Lucas when fit and would we look to bring in a Lucas type player who could offer a little more going forward to give gerrard a rest.

Henderson: A cert on the teamsheet at the moment, but next would we look to upgrade especially if we have champions league positions?

Coutinho, again another young player, who has and will drop out of form and probably the only player of his type in the squad. Would we look to provide cover or a player to challenge for his position?

Sterling: Superb at the moment, but with Victor Moses failing to step up and our obvious interest in wingers in Jan. No doubt will we will be looking to strengthen in this area.

Forward Line ( providing Suarez stay)
Probably expect Aspas to move on and thoughts on Borini will we cash in and bring in another top striker?

I expect a huge amount depends on whether me make Champions league next year on how strong and deep our squad needs to be.

EDS what a great performance today but one thing that I see has been missed is rodgers decsion to move raheem to the left at the emirates they played with gibbs an sagna as the full backs today was monreal in for gibbs he's not has good getting forward or as dangerous as gibbs so it was a great move move to switch raheem keeping sagna from getting to far forward an getting caught out with raheems pace (althou he did for his 1st goal). great move in my opinion.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - do you not think it was more about putting Suarez on Monreal as he can't defend? Monreal I mean.}

I mentioned that sterling being moved to the left was the brilliance because Arsenal were expecting Coutinho or Suarez to play there and Sagna can defend against them, but sterling is a different matter with his pace.
Ed it was about Sterling on the left more than Suarez for Monreal as BR also said something about sterling on the left to deal with Sagna in his post press smiling session.
