Ed, or others who may know
Re : the stadium redevelopment
People have been mentioning compulsory purchase / closing orders etc to possibly make way for the redevelopment.
But it's my understanding that those legal powers are only invested with the Council or a legally-appointed body (like a Development Agency or a Transport Body), and not LFC ?
The club wouldn't be able to issue Compulsory Purchase Orders surely. We could make offers to householders. So who would do that on the club's behalf ?
Or is it part of the Council's wider neighbourhood area regeneration ?
The Real KB
The Real KB

The club cant issue a compulsory purchase order however they can apply to the council to get the council to issue them.

Knowsley council issued them in Kirkby on behalf of tesco/everton however as we seen it's not that simple. The business owners in kirkby appealed the cpo's and had their appeal approved. So after years of legal battles and millions of pounds the development came to nothing.

You can appeal them mate, but only on certain grounds. What is crucial with the Anfield area is if the Council has a neighbourhood masterplan. If they have, and it's seen to be of benefit, residents can't appeal just to leave the area as is, ie all closed up and run down - it has to be an alternative. Is how I see it.
But thanks for your initial answer, would explain it.
The Real KB

Real KB, I'm sorry but your wrong. Liverpool city council delivered a redevelopment program for the entire city. Which included a £1.2b retail development at Liverpool 1 and an essential development of edge lane to give people access to the city. Even the cpo's granted to enable this to happen were appealed. Granted in this example the appeal was rejected however the road development (Liverpool gateway) is still ongoing due to these appeals despite being scheduled to be finished for the 2008 capital of culture year.

If appeals can delay a essential transport link 4 years what do you think it could do to a sports stadium. Especially when the new stadium is so much more beneficial to the area and the council regeneration program is ACTUALLY designed around a new ground.

Huyton REd

Huyton Red
Cheers for the reply mate. As I indicated, there has to be grounds for an appeal. What are grounds in one area may not apply to another. The delay to the Liverpool gateway, what are the grounds for this appeal ?
Most of the properties around Anfield are closed up anyway.

Ed i agree with gman84 a rugby world cup site would be great. Pretty please? As for the winner,if we play bismarck du plessis at hooker and played john smit off the bench,we'll win the rwc again no doubt. My prediction for the semis and final. Nz 17-24 sa,aus 38-10 eng. Final.. Sa 15-13 aus.
Capetownred

I really cant see anyone beating NZ this year

I'm an aussie, and your predictions sound pretty spot on, but the final will be a much higher score than that. with SA at full strength, which they haven't been for a long time, they can beat ANYONE, NZ will choke AGAIN.

lfc fans need to stop worrying about what the press make up. we dont have to sell anyone. we have hard owners that wont back down to anyone. keep the fath and just back the team.

If fsg tried to sell luis in jan they would have a revolution on their hands,i would imagine the protests against h and g would seem like small fry,do you think that they would want to have that,i dont,

they are not fools, they listen to the fans and respect their wishes, suppory j henry, suarez wont be going anywhere soon, but should he hand in a transfer request im sure that by that time fsg would have found a replacement,

though im sure it would be nigh on impossible to find a player as good as luis,i dont even miss torres and i didnt think i would ever say that, but with the team kk has put together even our second team would give most epl teams a run for their money, heres to the best future ever, roll on sat, ynwa jimmybosun,

The journalists of all the tabloids must really have it in for us, they have always given us bad press over the last 20yrs even when we won the champions league they belittled us concentrating more on us as " lucky Liverpool" and Milan through it away etc etc.

Now that we have made the best start for 17yrs, King Kenny has returned, all deadwood gone, under new ownership, plans for a new stadium on the table, and a very good team assemled cable of really going places.

Instead of concentrating on all the good things about our club as above the journalists and the tabloids, Skysports news and talksports would sooner print total b****cks and mis-chief make storys that the brothers Grim would be proud of.

They all seem to have a vendetor against the only club in England who put British football on the map in the first place. They would sooner crawl up old whiskey nose's arse and kiss his grapes. They all worship Old Arry the most bent back hander ever to work in the game, and as for our captain Englands beloved Chelsea john "al shag ya missis" Terry what a role model he is... but the press love him.

Instead the press have some kind of a mission to de rail everything we do which has started again.

The latest s**t to come out doing the rounds is Real are supposed to be making a bid for Suarez in January, and Suarez wants to leave? What a load of b****cks the guys been here less than 9 months and apparently he will be off to Madrid, very very very poor journalists stories who must have nothing better to do than talk s**t about us.

It's like dj vou every season, muppets

Who wants to be the darling of the English tabloid press anyway? Let them fawn over Utd let them support the Tories WHO CARES WHAT THEY PRINT!

dd

It shouldn't really suprise you Curled1 mate. Like you said it's been happening for over 20 years and will continue for years to come.

Yet another great press conference today from Kenny. Especially when asked about Andy's lifestyle, he said

I think Andy is wiser than a lot of the people who write about him, the Liverpool boss stated. I don't think his lifestyle is anything like they'd like it to be to get stories.

I don't know how much the media is going to milk this, the story goes back to March. You don't know his lifestyle. Who knows his lifestyle? Andy.

For us, as we've said often enough, it falls on deaf ears, Andy wasn't properly fit last year because of a knee injury. We've been very pleased with his level of fitness this year because he's lost that knee injury"

Kenny also added this, when asked about what Slur Alex said about 6 teams challenging for the league. He said

"Are we one of the 6 teams? If Fergie said it, it must be true" lol

Kenny truely is the King of all Kings.

Blair Mayne YNWA

Is it really true that the media have a biased view towards Liverpool, or is it our biased view that they have it in For us?

Would Liverpool sell Suarez if they got a £50million+ offer for him?

Maybe to Chelsea in 4 or 5 years if he suffers serious injury problems..
The Real KB

Yes if he was in F torres' form when we got 50 million quid for him and had his attitude he was carrying around with him for 6 months, but form and attitude suarez is showing now after selling FT for 50 million you'd want more for a player of that calibre, you do not sell a player at his peak for any price really...unless it sneaks up to 80 million if you know who i mean,

Forget about selling suarez now. Our priority should be to make sure he spends his best years wid us. He is the best player in the squad n selling him now for even 100 million wud cost us a top 4 spot coz arsenal r not too far behind n it wud send a wrong message to the dressing room n all us kopites who have been waiting n waiting for the 19th title.
Indian Buzzer

At this moment in time, Suarez is invaluable, so no.
Without him, we won't get into the top four, let alone win the league. The costs that no CL football again will incur is not realistically worth the £30m profit we could make from selling him at £50m.
In all seriousness, and without any rose tinted glasses involved, I genuinely think we have a good chance on the league with Suarez. Without, we can forget it. So for that reason, and that reason alone, I cannot see Kenny selling Suarez.
Is Suarez replaceable? No, I don't think so, he is a very unique player. He has the 'la liga' quality, if you like, but the tough outer shell that the prima donna's don't have. He is a fighter and a magician. He has an attitude and a determination with a flair and creativity that you can't put a price on, if the player is long-term contracted.
If Chelsea want the player, then they have to bid an absolutely ridiculous of amount money.
Jacob red

Another unsigned manc or cockney poster! Suarez is priceless! Alphared

Hey ed002!
I read w interest that u!r thinking of changing teams? Liverpool is the way to go, my lady.

There is no other team in england that can match the tradition, the history n the heritage that Liverpool has.

In fact, bill shankly practically brought modern football management into the english game.

Add to that the fact that liverpool has the best fans in the world. It's unbelievable how staunch, loyal n supportive the fans are (even if some on this site appear to b stick-wielding critics! Haha). If anybody watched that monumental game in istanbul in '05, it wld'v been so obvious. The unwavering support when we were 3-down at halftime is unmatchable. I've been a Red 25yrs, so I noe wat i'm talking abt.:-)

And of cos, if u'r the kind who's inclined to go w a winning team, now's a gd time to jump onto the Red bandwagon cos we'r obviously on the up. The owners are fantastic, the manager is brilliant n mad passionate abt e club, a great backroom staff, terrific youth coming thru, new stadium/redevelopment in the pipeline, strongest squad we'v had in 20yrs- there r so many reasons to feel good abt being a Red!

C'mon ed002, the choice is clear! U'd look great in red, i'm sure!:-)

Interview from Telegraph and John W Henry dated 5th Sept.

Has there been any progress on the prospects of a new stadium? Is building a new stadium a viable option in the current climate? Your group has indicated in the past that a ground-share with Everton is off the agenda is this still the case?

I've seen a lot of talk recently about ground-sharing, but our position hasn't changed. There's no doubt that if a new stadium were to be built in Liverpool from a financial perspective - which is the major issue - a ground-share would be helpful for both clubs. But there doesn't seem to be any support for that from Red or Blue fans - at all. So how could that ever happen?
We would love to expand Anfield, but there are enough local and regulatory issues to keep that avenue stalled for years with no assurances that once begun it would bear any fruit.
If Anfield cannot be expanded a new stadium is wonderful choice. But the fact is we already have 45,000 seats. If a new stadium is constructed with 60,000 seats you've spent an incredible sum of money to add just 15,000 seats.
If the cost is £300m for an extra 15,000 seats, that doesn't make any sense at all. Liverpool isn't London, you can't charge £1 million for a long-term club seat. And concession revenues per seat aren't that much different at Emirates from Anfield.
That's why the search is on currently for a naming-rights partner. And that could very well happen.

So Ed's new Stadium for Liverpool, what's your feeling from this interview. YNWA {Ed002's Note - I suspect that his statement "If the cost is £300m for an extra 15,000 seats, that doesn't make any sense at all" is key. I suspect Anfield will get a make over in the short term.}

But if you get a naming rights partner, that means that you can use anfield without loosing revenue over the two-three years it would take to build and get the new stadium up and running. making a new stadium a better option as it can also be expanded with less hassle that it would take to get anfield expanded over the 60,000 capacity mark. it would make sense to a proper business man is all im saying, that will benifit LFC and the city of LIVERPOOL as an attraction feature.
but for me the new stadium would have to be 65,000 to start of with.

Could this also hint at the Americans contemplating a bigger incriment in stadium capacity to possibly 75-80,000 to make a new build a more viable option, but the extra spend per seat would diminish pro rata once the decision to go down this road is started. They are smart enough to realise that they will not be able to charge 'london rates' for seats in Liverpool, so higher volume of seats with less profit margin would be more practicle and obviously the much needed bigger return from more corporate boxes which has us hamstrung currently. If nothing else the Mr Henry and Co have shown they have no intention of just making up the numbers, and I suspect the biggest statement of intent will be a massive increase in stadium capacity to possibly usurp that dung heap down the East Lancs Road. As a post note it is also worthwhile remembering I believe there are 60-70000 on our official season ticket waiting list (capped), and im sure they have factored that into their plans.

Red Til Dead

I hate to say I told you so (well love it really) but has this interview not confirmed exactly what I was saying about the problems with redeveloping anfield? You all mocked me saying Macca said the opposite.

Maybe now you will believe the other half of my post?

Real KB I can find my original post but can't find the follow up for some reason. Sorry if I didn't respond.

Get real? What you on? A few days ago you were telling me you believe Macca over me now the owner of the club releases a statement saying redeveloping anfield is unviable as could cost millions take years and still could end up a no go.

You say I'm not in the know as I hadnt read a article? I was simply passin on what I had been told. Oh and it's not over a week old it's 2-3 days.

Huyton red

Will copy and paste it mate :
Following on from Huyton Red's excellent post yday about the stadium development. I've only just seen his post and wanted to add some thoughts :
1. A new stadium, in Stanley Park, has already been given outline planning permission by Lpool Council. This would have included infrastructure improvements and area regeneration by other partners also. The current ground and surrounding housing would have been demolished for redevelopment.
This development would have been sympathetic to the surrounding area and would not have impacted on other resident's 'right to light'.
2. If new funding, or a naming rights deal, was sought a new ground would be the ideal option for everyone. This would be likely to get planning permission (following on from the existing planning permission) and bring in the other partners also. However, the problem IMO, is accessing the funding. I would be delighted if a major naming rights deal was sorted but, failing that, the current global economic climate makes it very difficult for funding to be provided for a new stadium. The interest rates charged for any loans / mortgages would also be crippling. Much much higher than Arsenal's.
3. The other option therefore was phased redevelopment. From an affordability viewpoint, much more achievable.
Macca's info was that the Kop & Kemlyn (as us old timers still put it) would remain untouched. So it's Main Stand and Anfield Road. I would reckon 90%+ of housing etc to the rear of those areas is already closed and boarded up. There may be some residents reluctant to cooperate and they do have a right to appeal. But only on certain grounds. If the club's development has benefits for the wider neighbourhood, the appeal must offer something against this to state why closure / demolition is not viable. Leaving the area a mess is not a grounds for appeal IMO.
4. The 'right to light' is an old law and nothing new. As a guide, a surveyor will measure an angle of 45 degrees from an affected window cill at a new development. If their light is so affected as to cause the property to become less fit, they may be successful. But try doing this test at your own window. You would have to living almost right on top of a new development to be so badly affected. And, as I said, much of the surrounding streets around the 2 x likely parts of the ground to be re-developed are already closed. So there is space to develop.
Anyway sorry for going on, but my thoughts for the day on this.

£300M for an extra 15,000 seats?

Hay chaps, it was myself who posted this article, and i reckon you should read all the interview, it goes into depth about Transfers and other major items the club needs to deal with in the short and long term.

tinyurl.com/3ntlbvd

DB YNWA

Naming rights partner? Stan chart stadium anyone?

Keith YNWA

Get real.

I have said over I agree with you on the grounds that 15,000 seats are not worth an investment of £300m. Why do you keep repeating that? This would work out at £20,000 per seat.

However the club has stated over and over that they are searching for naming rights partners. Do you honestly think they won't find one at all or is it the figures I quoted you don't agree with? If so what do you think the naming rights are worth?

I've told you what I have been told is going to happen all you keep saying is the same tripe which I actually agree with. With out the naming partner the new ground is a no go for 15,000 extra seats. However the reason Henry keeps saying this is to pressure the council to increase the capacity limits. A £300m ground with a £200m sponsorship deal is only a net investment of £100m if that's for 20,000 extra seats it works out at £5,000 a seat making the deal much more appealing.

Again these offers are on the table. I WILL be proved right.

However {Ed002's Note - If Liverpool were to sell the naming rights the payments would be spread over many years, still meaning that the club would need to borrow a large amount of money. I suspect that anyone sponsoring the stadium would not be willing to provide the money up front and certainly not anything like £200M up front.}

No ed you are right 200m would be 20m a year for ten years. However this is a factor of financing. Lower risk debt lower interest rates. As I say all to be announced as soon as naming rights contract sign.

Huyton Red {Ed002's Note - If the club could raise £300M at 5% then then spread over 10 years the cost of the stadium would be £45M per annum. It is hard to see how that makes too much sense for FSG I am afraid. It will be a tough call.}

Exactly Ed exactly.

Any fan would love a mega Anfield or Stanley Park but your bang on. People like Huyton Red have no clue as to how finance and borrowing work. They think Coke withdraw £300M from an ATM and say to Lfc "go ahead build a monster stadium if construction goes over budget give us a call plenty more dosh to throw around". Capital is not flowing throw the banking sector at present and the idea of the club taking on debt when the business model doesnt stack up is madness. The club isnt solid top 4 to ensure steady higher income. So as the Ed says as Macca says as anyone looking at the big picture will tell you there is a short medium and long term plan and Hicks and Huytons pipe dream isnt part of it.

Anfield development staggered without piling debt onto club is the only sane option. Just because you would like something to happen does not mean it will.

Now.....

Rubbish line up. Glad you are not the manager. To play that kind of formation, it is essential to have both FBs as wide men.
Besides, i'd rather pair Downing with Suarez up top, in that set up, than Carroll.

Team that should play v Stoke:

Reina
Kelly--Carra--Agger--Enrique
Henderson--Lucas--Spearing
Kuyt--Suarez--Bellamy

Subs: Doni, Skrtel, Robinson, Adam, Maxi, Downing, Carroll

Swap Downing for Spearing and that'll do for me

Chris in Tamworth

I have to disagree i would have bellamy on the bench and spearing swap them with downing and adam and then put coates on the bench aswell and ur maybe getting somewhere!

Daryll

Come on, it's obvious this anon poster is none other than jay spearing haha

Carlos slim

I'm the OP. I'd put Spearing in as his combative style would be very useful against Stoke. Adam's main strengths - long passes and set-pieces - could be nullified by Stoke's excellent aerial defence. Equally, playing wingers to cross into the box could just play into Stoke's hands. A front 3 of Kuyt, Suarez and Bellamy would interchange quickly and each possess a goal threat. Their movement would be perfect against Stoke's defence

Red Ollie

I would have Carra left back,
in Anfield training with the under 18s.

JOJO

How the heck do ya work it that Downing, one of our best players so far, is on the bench!!.. I just dont get it!
Attack attack attack!!
And with Stokes height at the back id say Carroll was a given to start, wear them down and then bring on Bellamy.
Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Enrique
Lucas
Henderson Adam
Downing Suarez
Carroll
Subs: Doni, Skrtel, Maxi, Bellamy, Robinson, Gerrard, Spearing

With Stokes height at the the back?
Wouldn't it be best to keep it on the deck.
Same as against Bolton who also have height at the back? But couldn't live with our pass and move style and neither will Stoke.
Playing Carroll would just play into Stokes strengths in my opinion. Where as against Spurs who are rubbish in the Air Carroll is a must.

Hi eds, just wondering if what the situation is with regards to fitness. Is he fit? And when you expect to see him in the side?

KingKennyXI {Ed001's Note - who?? It helps if you tell me who 'he' is!}

Kelly, Gerrard, Johnson and Adam.

He sir - he he

What length of contract did Coates sign. {Ed002's Note - A little under 5 years - until June 30, 2016.}

Suarez to Real Madrid? I doubt it. Real would be better off spending their money on Dalglish. The problem with the spanish league is that it's a two horse race with Madrid and Barca and at the moment Barca are the stronger team, they are going to take some beating for some time to come yet as well, they are even better this season than last year. That team has been playing together since they were kids, Fabergase included and they are largely responsible for the success of spain the the world and european cups. Suarez will have a much better chance of winning a league title at Liverpool in the next 4 years than at Madrid. I can't see that move ever happening and if anything Suarez said he would one day like to play for Barcelona.

Lets just stop talking about suarez going anywer now eh?

That may be happen after 2 years not now.

If liverpool win things then he wont go anywhere.

Not a Liverpool related post but as a reds fan and seen as there is no talk rugby site, what's everyones predictions for the world cup? As an Irishman I was feeling pretty confident but our warm up form has me pretty worried, but at the end of the day it's all about peaking at the right time and I'm hoping that when our full team are lined out together that we'll have a few tricks up our sleeve, we need our players to bring their club form onto the international stage, if we do we are a match for anyone on our day, I just hope that we have put the ghosts of 2007 behind us and are well prepared both physically and mentally. My heart says semi finals but my brain says quaters, I think England can hope for the same as ourselves, I have a feeling Scotland and Wales are going to strugle to get out of their groups, the big test for Wales is Samoa, likewise for Scotland they shoud go all out for the win against Argentina win these games and you'll make the quaters, It's hard to look past the big three southern hemisphere teams when lookin for a winner, the All Blacks have home advantage but the constantly seem to fail on the big stage and they will have the extra pressure of playing at home this time around, I like Australia they have a really talented team with some great young players and they are super quick out the backs, but I'm going to go for South Africa for the win they are brutes, easily the most physical of the big three, don't be fooled by their tri nations form they have a huge pool of players and a lot of their best ones didn't really feature in their tri nations games, and when they did bring out some of their big guns they beat the All Blacks all be it a team with out Carter and McCaw to name a few but they are the best value for money and I'll be having a cheeky bet on them to lift the Web Ellis, as for the French....well who cares?

Gman82
ps. eds any chance of a rugby world cup site? I konw your looking to fill your servers {Ed002's Note - I'll ask.}

Australia will win it beating new Zealand in the final.England will lose to France in the quarters

Sounds like a good way to use a server for 5 weeks and I like a bit of rugby myself. From an England perspective, I'd take the semi finals as a good result. Even though Scotland and Argentina are difficult customers we should just about have enough to beat them and I'll always back us to beat Les Bleus when the chips are down. Then we'll probably go out to the team I've been tipping for the last two years, Australia. Which is a bit of a pity as my wife's an Aussie and I've given her so much crap over the Ashes that I imagine a payback in kind will be on it's way.

Anyway, enough of that. Stoke is a tough game on Saturday and how we do will tell us a lot about what we can expect from this season I suspect. Lets have a nice solid performance at the back and we can pick them off when their physical but less than pacy backline starts to tire around 60 minutes with a bit of luck.
AC

Hope japan does well, but i dont know much about rugby , just as long as the aussies dont win it.........lfc

England will almost certainly make the semi then anything could happen but I fully expect that, at last, the all blacks will win it again

Chris in Tamworth

To the guy who said new Zealand will win an we will get beat by France, we will either play new Zealand or France in the quarter finals, so your outcome is unlikely mate.
huddz red

Chris, i don't think the all blacks will win, being on home turf helps but it also puts a massive amount of pressure on you especially as for the last few times they have had he chance to win the world cup and they blew it. Their like Ireland, good team, just play crap at the worst moment.

SA all the way. but know that a Southern Hemisphere team will win it. but not New Zealand they always bottle it.

Scotland will be the All Blacks in the final! Ha ha, I wish!

Everyone on this site seems crazy about hazard. But dont forget that his attitude is terrible. Rather have adam johnson than someone whoos gonna sulk when the goin gets tough. Remember our previous no9?
Indian Buzzer

Are you forgetting Carrol and Bellamy have both had attitude problems in their time both off and on the pitch but it does not mean their crap or cant play hazard is class and im sure Kenny could sort him out

And might i add that the lad is way overrated and won't cut it in the EPL. Would be another french leagus disaster buy for us if we do go for him, even though he's a belgian.

BooDaBooze

I agree completely with what BooDaBooze said. He is physically frail, has poor attitude n walked out on his national coach. What if he did dat to kk? N the french league is light years behind the bpl. U cant judge a players performance when in french league. same goes for boudabouz.

Has there been any further news regarding the Stadium?. It is truly exciting to think of Liverpool playing in a new stadium of 70000+ fans, and playing 'the style of football that made us famous'.
Long live "The King"!.

08 Sep 2011 12:59:01
Ed, do you think Gerrard will come back a better player? He doesn't have to carry the team anymore with the likes of Suarez and Downey playing.

Wheeler92 {Ed001's Note - better than he has been the last couple of years, he will no longer be carrying a team but be a part of it. It will help him having a better team around him as well, with a better manager to get more out of him.}

Gerrard will come Back more better player as he have no presur on him now. after alonso leave he have to do the extra job in midfield. Lucas And Adam been very good taking care of it so Gerrard can back his killing mood again.

Cant wait for the gerrard-suarez-downing trio tearing teams apart. I just dont see carrol playing a major part in our success even when gerrards back. Wud rather have higuain or zarate. Not slagging off carrol but i just dont think he wil make it in our best 11.
Indian Buzzer

Very good point ed001 straight to the point, you do know a thing or two about football( just kidding). I love how you are always positive in your comments about lfc, it lifts my spirits.
hibsylfc {Ed001's Note - I am only positive about the good things. I will say if I think there is something wrong, it is just that right now there is not a lot wrong with the club. We are going places and are exciting to watch. The last time I actually enjoyed watching us play was during the Roy Evans era, it is nice to see us play positive football that is enjoyable to watch again. Long may the King reign!}

Did'nt you enjoy the run in of 08 09 Ed? where we played so positive and destroyed team's i:e United,Real Madrid and Villa! in 5 consecutive game's we scored 21 goal's conceded 9 playing attacking football! Alphared {Ed001's Note - yeah but it was always too little, too late and it frustrated me more than anything because of the previous years of defensive footie we had suffered under Rafa.}

Listen Lads, we got who we got. I think kk and dc with the help of the owners have done a great job getting in quality 1st team players. Look at all the dead wood they have got rid of. It's a great start, don't speculate just trust......y.n.w.a. jay (wmsc)

Afternoon all,
Reading Raul M's comments today just reassures me that LFC did the right thing by not sticking to the old owners promise of a pay rise.
His comments are contradictory mentioning he didn't want to leave and then as ssinf as AVB came asking for him he leapt like a smitten salmon.
So glad we have the right guys at the top and KK is back putting the club first and not pandering to players.
By the way, I thought Raul was am average player and looked good in a poor team last season. He would be a bench warmer if he was still here, so good to get £12m for a sub as we were overcharged last season.
Ultra Red

Once stevie g is back people will of forgotten Meireles and his 5 goals, stevie will have the same telepathic link with Dowing,Carrol and Suarez as he did with Torres...Great times ahead

Heis already forgotten as is Judas.

Torres is no Judas

Just a self indulgent individual who craved success for his ego!

I think I echo the sentiments of most Liverpool fans in saying that Charlie Adam so far has shown the promise of being the next Xabi Alonso in the Liverpool team. I think we have lacked a player with that sort of passing range since Alonso left and I am delighted with the way he has slotted straight into the team in this way. I was dissapointed when we did not make a move for Alonso in the summer but now I completely and thoroughly believe that Charlie Adam is as good as if not potentially better than Alonso. He clearly has the passing range of Alonso but seems to play with more grit.
RedPandaMan

So you think Charlie Adam is better than arguably the best passer of a football on the planet? Well your wrong! I do like Adam and he is a Very Good passer of the ball, with sightly better movement than Xabi, But he is certainly not a better player than him.

SW81

He's young though. He will only get better :)

cozinoz

I'm afraid if you think Adam will be better than Alonso, you will be bitterly disappointed. Adam will be a very good player for us, but to compare him to Alonso (as SW18 said, arguably the best passer of a ball on the planet) is some way of the mark.

Ash

Charlie will never be better than alonso in cm , but he is better futher forward around the box attacking.......lfc

Alonso is not the best passer in the world you idiot. He was good but no way the best. Look at the barca midfield there all better than alonso. I would not put Alonso in the top 10 passers in world football

Before anyone starts having a go at me, I have been a season ticket Holder at Liverpool for 18 Years so I am not an Armchair Supporter

Alonso was a cracking Player for us, but the 5 years he was with us, his best seasons, where his 1st and his last, the 3 years in-between, he was still good, but not as influential as his good seasons.

And considering his age, and the fact Rafa, tried to get Barry in instead, we did well getting £30 million for him

As for Adam, he will bring a new dimension to the team, an example was the Ball he played to Downing against Bolton the other week, when it was handled was brilliant,

My only concern with Adam is fitness, he looks knackered after about an hour, and he don't really see him for the last.

Steve

Ok if im an "idiot" for claiming Xavier is arguably one of the best passers of a ball on the planet name your 10 players who are better right now! with back up for each...... idiot!

SW81

Adam is more attacking than Alonso, but Alonso could pass the ball better and start attacks. What I like about Adam is how good his set pieces are, great free kick and corner taking ability. Alonso wasn't as good in that aspect, but if you ask who I'd rather have it's Alonso all day.

10 players better than xavier....... that wont be hard, the whole sqiad for my local team for a start. would have degen at rb rather than abel

Charlie being a gifted Left Footer gives us balance.
Been a Red for 50yrs and for the first time in the last 20yrs. The team has real balance.
The importance of natural left footed players can't be under-estimated, especially when there of the quality of Agger,Enrique,Adam and Downing.
So to answer is Adam better than Alonso?
Yes he is better. Alonso no longer plays for us? So how can he possibly be better than Adam.
kidmillions

You lot are comparing a guy who played with LFC for five years to a guy who has played with LFC for five weeks. Let's revisit this topic in five years, then compare the two. For now, lets just appreciate the good job Charlie is doing for us on the pitch.

LIVERPRES

Gentlemen lets have a bit of good spirit and less of the person remarks!

Differences of opinion can be accomodated without name calling?

Alsonso was a good player but he has moved on for whatever reason and is unlikely to come back for so many other reasons look at who we have rather then who we havn't.

New players don't have to compare well with past players to be good for the team.

Budda

Gerrard is beter than both of these clowns!

The problem with most players and im not just talking about the foreign players either, is that England is in all fairness a crap place to live if you are filthy rich, the only benefit most people have with living here is the benefits and the NHS system, Be honest if you could afford, 90% of people would have a foreign Holiday or even move abroad if they could get a visa and guarenteed work.
The temptation of the weather and lifstyle in a country like spain is just too good to pass up, so i for one dont blame any player wanting to move to madrid or barcelona, my issue is with players moving from the likes of liverpool to chelsea or arsenal to man city, these players are just mercenaries.
I think if barcelona or real madrid come calling its going to be extreamly difficult to hold onto saurez or anyother player, unfortunatly the only thing clubs can do is hold out for the right price.
Jaydee

But you're assuming everyone wants the same as you Jaydee. i lived in Australia for 10 years and got sick of the hot summers and craved the history and culture of Northern Europe. The UK can be quite appealing for a few years or so.

cozinoz {Ed001's Note - I fail to understand the original post, if you are filthy rich anywhere is a good place to live! It is when you haven't much it makes a difference.}

Very good point

Have you tried living in England as a filthy rich person, from what I can see most of them seem fairly happy!

I completely disagree with your post. I live in Spain and yes it is nice, but for for the last two winters we've had 5 months of constant rain, causing floods and landslides.

Obviously, the summers are a lot better, but you still have to work in the hot weather, which is a killer.

My point being, don't take it for granted, that Spain is a much better option.

Paul R

Ok let me put it another way, you play for a team in the premiership, not LFC and one of the two most prestigious clubs in spain, in fact arguably the two most prestigious clubs in the world comes calling, doubles your wage. the climate is such that t.shirts are the norm for 300 days of the year, what would your choice be.
Jaydee

Not true for all players, but for players from south america or medittarian countrys who grew up idolising Barca or Real Madrid and who's language and life style since they were young would fit living in spain it's hard to say no if either club come calling. It think that's why it's great that there's a backbone now of British players, some Scandanavian and some latin.

Fitzy

Rafa Benitez still lives on the Wirral? Don't blame him? I lived in Spain for a while Madrid is boiling hot in the summer and freezing cold and shrouded in fog a lot of days in the winter. I now live on the Wirral, voted one of the best regions to live in the UK.
Hope Suarez buys a house on the Wirral he'll never leave..
kidmillions

I have lived in over six countries during my life on three different continents and the best place on earth by far is England and I am not british,so my opinion is based upon being around.
hibsylfc

Did you say the best place on earth by far is England?? You're having a laugh hibsylfc. If that's your verdict then the 5 other places you lived must have been Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Mongolia.

I've also lived in many countries and all but 1 of the continents. England is one of my favorite places to visit but certainly not the best to live in. Certainly not.

What I really like about the UK is the mix of cultures. In London and other big cities you can experience all sorts of different cultures. There is a fantastic cocktail. On mainland Europe, apart from France, there is very little else but typical boring European.

The best place to live is odessa.

Plkus the women are incredibly beautiful and without the BS of the western european women

Ukraine is a poor country materially but rich is soul

UK is rich materially but poor in soul

This, maybe, would be the best formation for the game vs stoke.

- reina -
- Johnson - Coates - Agger - Enrique -
- Hendo - Adam - Lucas - Downing -
- Carroll - Suarez -

So you'd put coates in for carra?

Are people like you crazy, you cant put coates in who has barely trained with his new team in a very difficult fixture. Rest of the team is fine with carragher for coates

Sounds good but dont be surprised if carra plays on the right

Yeah, Great Idea.... Drop the Vice Captain for a 20 year old, who has never played in the EPL and had a whole 2 training session with the players against a fast, tough, bullish team who are incredibly hard to beat on there own patch!...... Erm.. No, No, No! Coates has a great future but give the KID a chance to bed in...
SW81

Your going to drop Carragher for a 20 year old with no expereince in the EPL?

Who probably hasn't even sttled in to life in Liverpool, that would be champion!

Thank God Kenny is the Manager!

I'd play carra for this game with coates on the bench taking off sktrel and play skrtel v spurs with agger as cb also and coates on the bench because spurs attack is fast & strong and skrtel n agger are our best cb combo

There is a possibility of dropping Carra.
Suarez hit the ground running, same for Enrique.
Altho it sounds dicey, it is very much possible. I would also drop Carra for Coates too, no insult intended.

O'seunfunmi (Anfield Red)

Please send me a ticket to Fantasy Island .

Coates ??

Have you ever been to a football match ?

Your all in for a surprise. coates will play instead of carra

Why would you change a winning team?
Stokes strength is in the Air!
But if we keep good possession and pass and move, it won't be in the air.
Playing Carroll would be playing in to Stokes strength.
kidmillions

Four at the back...

Johnson Carra Coates Enrique...

I dont think Johnson will be deemed match fit! as he's only been back fully training from the start of the week! and Kenny is'nt gonna drop Agger! I cant see Flanagan starting so i would go for Skrtel at rightback Carragher Agger centreback's and Enrique leftback! Alphared

Team that should play Stoke

Reina

Kelly Carragher Agger Enrique

Henderson Lucas Adam Downing

Suarez Carroll

Subs: Doni, Coates, Skrtel, Spearing, Shelvey, Kuyt, Bellamy

Good team

I'd think Kelly won't be back ready for this match so I think KK may keep Skrtel at RB {Ed001's Note - Johnson is back in training.}

I think we need maxi on the bench instead or shelv or spear?

A quick word on Poulsen... After arriving in France for his high profile transfer, he was shocked to find out he was'nt going to be the new holding midfielder for French club Evian.
He was actually going to be the new water carrier for Evian, the mineral water company.

Just wanted to say, I love reading through the posts laughing at the comical banter but probably enjoy the more fiery verging on aggressive posts. Not saying that 'my dad is better than your dad' tactics are the way forward but it all goes to show just how passionate we all are about our great club. We have our own opinions that will obviously differ from others but when the aggressiveness comes out it not only serves to defend the poster's corner but also their beliefs about liverpool football club. A year ago there was anger, hurt, despondancy and a complete lack of being arsed, not just with the players but fans alike because we could all see our great club falling to pieces around us and we just could not believe what was actually happening. Now the liverbird is rising once again, we have something to fight for and we have fire in our bellies. If these emotions are the same in the players as well as the fans then surely glory won't be too far away. I live and breathe this club and can't wait for Saturdays. The thrill of watching our club is back again.

Cheers
Greggers

No you don't.

People like you are the reason your club is hated so much. Chavski & Citeh are also detested, but no where as much as the spam. Simply because of punks like you. When we take the title from you this year and the record, and whisky nose retires next season, you lot will be crying like the little babies that you are.

I have mates who support a wide range of clubs, but never a manc like you.

Is it Irish Red who posts in before games, predicting we'll get a right drubbing ? That's his superstition to ensure we win. It's very amusing. Hope he posts in before the Stoke match.
The Real KB

Wolves gave Spurs a very tough game last year, Wolves have srengthened their defence with Johnson and Spurs will be without VDV, Lennon, King and Gallas although they now have Parker and Spider Monkey I can see a draw for this game.

I wouldnt argue with you mate. I would not have it much different.
