Just heard that John Henry has told world press that Suarez will NOT be joining Arsenal or anybody else either. He stated empahtically that Suarez would be a Liverpool player on Sep 3.

Looks like he's going nowhere boys. Only time will tell if he likes his pies hot or humbled.

Personally i'm sick of the whole Suarez stuff and think he has been extremely badly advised. No idea what happens now, but the board of LFc are getting tough. He is after all just a squad member ( albeit a good one ) in a team that has many new young stars.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I like John Henry but I think he's made a blunder here! Keeping Suarez with his attitude could be a disaster! And what does he mean no time to replace? There's a month left yet! He's really backed himself and the club into a corner now!

Agree0 Disagree0

As the ed said, its just posturing. If the right bid is made, he will go. However, henry will not tolerate Arsenal and Suarez`s under-handed schemes. That he will not stand for.

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool have no intention of keeping Suarez. They are after as much money as possible for him. This is just the owner of the club showing who's in charge. Suarez has stated he wants out and Henry has basically said "you go on our terms not yours".
Don't read too much into it.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's just an awful statement from Henry, to be honest. I don't know if he actually means it, but keeping an unpredictable Suarez around seems a terrible idea to me. Certainly didn't work out for City with Tevez and don't see it working for us either.

Just watched the highlights of 2005 on ITV 4.
I'm surprised Alonso is still alive after that goal. celebration

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd fancy his chances of being alive even less if he didn't put the rebound in!

Just been on the anfield tour when my 3 year old started having a massive tantrum crying, screaming and shouting outside. She has now been offered a contract at arsenal. Obviously she said no!! :-) taffred

Ed,

I have a question.

Why can't LFC just take Arsenal to court if they try to be aggressive in the Suarez saga?

After all by bidding 40 mil + 1 pound, it can be established that Arsenal ALLEGEDLY did have a look at LFC contract with Suarez. Something which is alleged to be protected by a confidentiality agreement.

besides when did Arsenal last bid that kind of amount for any player. It usually goes in round figures I expect. I feel that THAT EXTRA 1 pound is very symbolic and vital and it would be very difficult for Arsenal to explain that kind of bid.

Liverpool got punished in the Ziege case but that 1 pound should make it a little difficult for Arsenal. {Ed001's Note - because you would need to provide proof that they didn't just get it from media reports.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It would be pointless and petty. Everyone on the internet (or at least those that pay attention to the Eds) knew about Suarez's clause.

Evening All,

Been away for a while, now back & loving the positive site. Well done eds.
Just wanted to mention that I walked into my office today to see a picture on my wall of Freddy mercury with Suarez' face, whilst "I want to break free" was playing on someone's phone.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2013 21:31:25
Do the Ed's think if arsenal would have bid £50m for suarez instead of the £40m+£1 He would be anarsenal player?

Ynwa {Ed001's Note - I doubt it myself.}

so according to Steve nicol he shall not be named is an "honourable guy" and has demanded the club "do right by him". In the words of Mr Henry. what's he been smoking?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can not stand Steve Nicol. He has very little, if anything positive to say about anything LFC does. I suspect he has an issue with the owners or Rodgers, because I can't understand it. I also suspect he was one of the nameless whining trolls that used to post on here.

Agree0 Disagree0

I've seen a few of Nicol's post since he joined ESPN.
He always has a contrary pov that's for sure.
Can't see him tolerating such antics in the dressing room as a player or a manager

1. Chelsea
2. Man City
3. Liverpool
4. Man Utd
5. Arsenal

18. Norwich
19. Hull
20 C. Palace

Top English Scorer: Sturridge
Most Assists: Continho

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm loving the optimism so won't disagree but I'm sure loads of so called LFC fans will!

Strive for stars and you may end up at the moon!

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha - no bias there! I love it and hope it comes true my friend.

Not bias at all lol

Best assist and goals coming from us and top 3! Would love it. where would spurs finish?

Agree0 Disagree0

You really think Chelsea will finish above us?

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldnt be surprised to see Norwich in the top 10 this season.

Hi Eds, a question about Canos if I may. He really does look a great talent and I was wondering, from what you have seen or heard, how long do you think it'll be before he is given a chance in the first team? Many thanks as always and have great weekends {Ed030's Note - Thanks mate,You too,There are high expectations for him and this is highlighted by the hard work that went into bringing him here. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Another spanish youngster joined from valencia in the summer, Pedro Chirivella, he is likened to busquets and alonso but with more mobility, turned down barca for us can play as traditional midfielder, defensive midfielder or attacking midfielder. t the recent milk cup tourny in northern ireland he was picked out as best talent of any age in the tourny watch for this kid too

How would everyone feel about luis Muriel an alexis Sanchez as Suarez replacements?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes definitely. But it won't happen. If only the club thought like the fans when it comes to buying replacements, we will end up with another Andy Carroll

Agree0 Disagree0

Grate but ain't going to happen especially sanchez

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we should go for them or at least 1 of them along with Eriksen, Papa & Cissokho to finish the summer off, we need proven quality players when Suarez departs and in Papa, Sanchez & Eriksen were getting proven quality players!

Agree0 Disagree0

When you say 'thought like the fans' you mean, Spend money on players like Dempsey and Sigurdsson who had such huge impacts for spurs last season?

Or perhaps you mean we'd spend 150 million on Cavani, Ken Aguero and Lavezzi?

The fans have good intentions, but a lot of them would be disasters if they could make the decisions. Myself Included.

Agree0 Disagree0

DBol - that's because us as fans only have to consider whether we 'think' they are affordable! The board have to explore whether they player wishes to join us, will the player be able to settle in the uk, what length of contract they are after and wages etc - as fans we just throw names out there - I want another attacking front player and trust the club will get it right - i'm impressed with the acquisitions so far in the last 12 months - we press high, we break quickly - we just need a little bit more quality at full backs and that other person up front and I would be well happy

I think people are forgetting how good of a player michu is, we could play him as are main striker, behind the striker or even in midfield. Think how big he is he Bullys people and he's not that slow and the cannon of a left foot speaks for its self, let's snap him up and either papadopalous alderwield or llori and I think we could be good to go this season maybe another attacker or another lb to add competition.

Cheers

hi eds and reds,

ive been thinking about where we need to bolster the team, we know suarez wants to go, and now agger might be going aswell as skertal, I think we need to buy 2 top CBs and a fox in the box because we don't need to win games 5-0 or 6-0 a 1-0 will do every time and with everton looking at toby A from ajax then we need to get in there 1st because we all know what happend last season when we let AC go with no back up that's why come january when we got sturridge and couthinio we improved a lot sturridge goal return was just as good as suarez's he scored 11 goals in 4 months were suarez scored 23 for the whole season so we may already have a replacement for suarez and his goals . my point is if we get good defenders then we can stop the other teams scoring giving us a better chance of winning

eds do you think Liverpool will report arsenal for the tapping up (not sure if tapping up is the right word) of suarez saga?
the 40 +1 bid only came after suarez said he would be happy to move to arsenal.
that bid is pretty exact to activate the clause in his contract (bids over 40 million)
last night after the game they said that there would be a confidentiality agreement in his contract, so I would guess one of his representatives informed arsenal of the clause, so arsenal have tried to used info obtained illegally to there advantage.
this is of course only if Liverpool have to sell for less then there valuation of suarez.

thanks {Ed002's Note - There is nothing to report them for. I explained the reason for the £1 all ready. The figure that would let there be discussions with another club has been discussed openly on here for 9 months. You seem to be clutching at straws for some unknown reason.}

Everone in favour of a Suarez fee day on www.Liverpool-rumours.co.uk say I. This Suarez stuff is doing my head in I haven't been this bored and exasperated since I the last time I had coital with my girlfriend. On the flip side I saw Ronaldo and entourage in Bal Harbor Mall in Miami yesterday and let me tell you that man is a serious unit and far too good looking for his own good. He walked past me all sunglasses and bling and your initial instinct is to go all hysterical like a prepubescent girl at a Justin Bieber concert but then I remembered if it wasn't for Ronaldo scoring 500 goals in that freak season Liverpool would have wone the league under Rafa despite of Robbie Keanes abysmal performances! Once a red always a red even though I live in Florida!

I seen you post that Michu hsa price, but would you say its a fair price? Do you think we would be put off by the price or do think we may turn to him once S is gone?
Cheers {Ed002's Note - I would not want to get in to whether or not any price is "fair". I have no idea if Liverpool would look to him but will say if I hear anything.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

How come they have made him available? Diffcult to say but I guess everyone has a price

We seriously need to get John Barnes involved in the club as some sort of ambassador or something. The man just speaks sense everytime he speaks. {Ed002's Note - So what would you be expecting him to do in his role as an ambassador?}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd expect him to teach kids how to rap.

That would do to start with ed.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's always nice to have your legends around the place. Commercially its not too bad either, even if its just posing for pictures for excitable fans at official club functions like we've seen Fowler and Rush doing. So basically not that much but I'd like to see him involved more with the club. {Ed002's Note - So you would like him to mooch around Anfield, and smiling when someone wants their picture taken with him. Not much of an ambassadorial role.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Advice, smiling, motivational speeches.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hmm maybe there are non-commercial aspects to the role I'm not privy to.

Agree0 Disagree0

Perhaps he could give out some ferrero rocher.

Agree0 Disagree0

You've got to hold and give but do it at the right time, you can be slow or fast but you must get to the line.theyll always hit you and hurt you defend or attack, there's only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can because I'm the England man and what your lookin at is the master plan. Heard Liverpool have submitted a written offer for Guilherme Siqueira. You heard anything to that effect Eds? Hope this is true as I rate him better than Cisshoko. Exciting times IMO {Ed002's Note - See previous answers.}

Does anyone else remember the interviews Suarez gave last season saying he wouldn't be leaving just because we didn't qualify for the champions league. So he thinks he's persecuted by the press & wants to leave the country. Then he changes his mind & says he wants to move to Arsenal. Get rid of him ASAP we've had bigger & better players than him. I can't wait for the reception he gets when he comes back to Anfield in an Arsenal shirt. Not to mention the half way line leg breaker one of his former colleges should deliver. {Ed002's Note - The key lesson to be learned is not to hang off every word spoken during interviews with players, managers etc.. Things change all of the time and players come and go. Suarez played the field last summer with Juve and Liverpool bought him off. Now he will be gone.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'll be glad when he's gone. If he wants to leave so badly put in a transfer request. Only hope he finds the grass is not always greener.

Agree0 Disagree0

I vote lucas to do it, suarez has betrayed him more than any.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd be happy with a simple Agger elbow to the head ala Torres when the ref basically ignored it. It would also mean Agger is still with us. Make him Vice Captain asap.

Just seen the tv season preview, and staggered to see that Suarez won us 11 points last season compared to bale with 24! We all know he is an immense talent but would love to see how the points won compares to our other players, think Sturridge may be close.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

These comparisons are redundant really. don't forget player like Suarez takes defenders with him freeing space for others, those making these comparisons don't take these things into account.
There are not many players as good as Suarez, that's why we demanding a high fee for him . I want him gone, but we will be loosing top quality player that is hard to replace, fooling ourselves that he was n't effective enough is just plain stupid.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Roy, it is plain stupid to think that way, simply because if you take out Suarez from the team, you have to put in someone else and there is no way of knowing how that situation would span out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually I think there is a case that could be made that Suarez isn't nearly as good as many on here seem to think. All I ever hear about is his goals. Find me a decent striker that takes the 2nd most shots in all of Europe and doesn't score 30 and what you have found is not a decent striker.

He's awful in possession (most dispossessed player in all of the PL last season and 2nd highest turnover rate per game), not a great passer (completion percentage is much lower than many other top strikers), and is incredibly wasteful (thus why he wasn't the 2nd highest goal scorer in Europe last season).

The season before he was absolutely abysmal at finishing which everyone seems to have forgotten for some reason. The only thing I can't understand is why people seem to think he's worth £55M+ or whatever. Could it be perhaps that no one is biding the amount we want because he's being overvalued?

Agree0 Disagree0

Roy the same could be said of sturridge like the 1st poster said, he would have took defenders out of place and after watching aspas then he will do the same because he runs for every ball down the flanks

I wonder is there any interest this summer for Dinamo Zagreb players( younglings), Halilovic will be a great player but would be too pricey even now when he is only 17, there are some more great players coming up as DZ cadettes as they have recently won vs AC Milan and Boca Juniors, real impressive displays, we should keep an eye for em {Ed002's Note - Not from Liverpool.}

i have a feeling we would be in for dzeko very soon.
just wondering though is there interest from Liverpool in any BPL players?

Any news about Yesil? I really like this lad and if fit would put him in the senior squad, he has goals in his blood! mark my words he will be a superstar for us, given his chance, in fact unless we are going to attract a top forward I would go with who we have and promote him, feel free to disagree but its my opinion, don't just diss it, tell me your answers!

Completly agree that Hypia and Riise were amazing players, I still remember seeing big sami scoring against Omagh town in a charity match when I was about 8, never seen a man jump so high and never seen someone wear the badge with so much pride, the topic of skirtel is a sensitive one but michale owen even said last night on BT sport that he lost his form more times than enough but as he was given the chances he got his form back and only improved as a player, that is until he abandoned us for real madrid, talking of kolo toure the man has had nothing but great things to say about the squad, the supporters amd the club since he joined, I think when he is back to full match fitness he will be a great addition to our team and will be there to give experiance to the likes of andre wisdom :-) would love to hear your opinions back

I've high hopes for Wisdom/Kelly. Rather than CB, I would rather we strengthen the full back positions - cannot wait for the new season

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah that's me broseph lol yeah just was reading the comments Brendan Rodgers left on ssn about suarez and it really got me angry that a player with his quality doesn't see the love and support that all Liverpool fans have showed him, but I have 100 % trust that Rodgers will replace him with a more than capable striker who this time will hopefully care more about the badge, the supporters and the club rather than think the grass is always greener on the other side

Oh I see what happened there, thanks for pointing that out 100 percent Red

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2013 17:10:57
Reading on ssn, and it fills me with pride when you hear Brendan Rodgers chata about showing respect for a great club, and having honour, what I say is you should play for the fans who chanted your name through a racism and biting accusation, children around Liverpool and the world with suarez wrote on the back of there shirts, peoples dreams are to see you walk out in anfield and play for the badge that we love, respect and honour. What I will say Luis is you will end up like Torres, Mascherano and michale owen. All players who we loved and wished we could be. Why can't these players be like Steven Gerrad and Jamie Carragher who showed loyalty through out there whole carrears. Them two will not be remembered for winning the premier league but they will be remembered for being two of the greatest proffessionals of all time and will go down in history as legends who wore the shirt. Something you will never achieve. My only other point I will make is people saying about buying another centre back, take a look at Martin Skrtel a player who was our player of the year two years ago, big strong fast an amazing addition to our team, if it was me i'd be getting behind my current player who is amazing before looking elsewere. Anyone who wants to comment on this is more than free to :-)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree Sion Mills Red - but not only Gerrard and Carragher - the loyalty shown by the likes of Riise and Hyypia - two foreign players that immersed themselves in the passion of Liverpool, Riise was edged out by Aurelio and a string of others and it's a position I don't think we have effectively filled since Riise left - a good effort made by other players but never truly filled. I don't know if it was partly sentiment that saw Carragher played instead of Skrtel in the 2nd half of the season but overall the team playd better - I would rather see Skrtel get it together and re-establish a formidable partnership with Agger - I'm sure Toure was bought to play, so it would be difficult to see us attracting a formidable centre half with no guarantee of first team action - an interesting few weeks ahead

Agree0 Disagree0

He lost a bit of form, made some costly mistakes and has been pilloried for it ever since, I would keep him, but it's not up to me.

Agree 100% Sion Red.

Anyone else think we are holding onto Suarez til the end of transfer market so that Arsenal won't have time to sign another striker whilst we whisk Suarez off to Madrid (or Bayern, or who cares)?

Would be great if we strengthened and Arsenal didn't have a chance to sign anyone. Perhaps that is BR's plan! Brilliant.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Do you honestly think we are depending solely on this transfer lol we have money and other top targets too get real please

Agree0 Disagree0

No Devon, I do not honestly think that we are relying on Suarez transfer (BR has made it clear that we have targets, etc). Just stating how nice it would be to keep Arsenal lurching until the last day then unload Suarez on continental team, such as "get Real" as you have suggested

Agree0 Disagree0

Apologies Devon, just realized you meant to say 'gooner'. In that case, yes, I think you are relying on one target

Agree0 Disagree0

Devon you may well have money and other targets doesn't mean you will get them . Take it from us its hard for teams like us to sign top players at teams perticulay when you haven't won anything is so long .

Everyone keeps banging on about Marquee signings but if we look at our track record spending £15m or above over the last few years it has not been good (except for Suarez and Torres but they both turned sour). Carroll, Keane, Aquilani, Downing, Henderson & Allen (hoping the latter 2 turn things around). Our track record has not been good and the pressure has got to these players.
These little nuggets such as Agger, Sturridge, Coutinho, Aspas, Enrique, Mignolet all at reasonable prices are the way forward. If we get £50 for Suarez go and buy 5 £10m gems and reap the rewards rather than putting all our eggs in one or two baskets. Out of the 5 if 2 or 3 blosom then money well spent again. I really think we will secure top 4 this season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Spearing is having his medical at Bolton after personal terms and fees have been agreed.

There is a rumor that Skrtle might go on loan to Napoli w/ an option to buy.

Suarez will definitely leave. Even if he stays with us, what's the use of player who does not want to play for us anymore.

I am not sure about Coates.

So far the news has all been about our number 7 and not about how the team have been playing so we've relatively flew under the radar. I think BR has some good targets in mind and with the 2 to 3 new signings we should have a solid chance of mounting a challenge for the top 4 in my opinion i'm staying optimistic but realistic that the other teams above us have also strengthened their sides so its going to be tough for us but with a little will and determination i'm sure Liverpool will do just fine with or without our number 7.

if he was in the utd squad he would be, but not for the friendlys.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally don't rate cleverly that much and agree with you regarding henderson. Think he is a much better player and if his stats back it up! Dunno how he is overlooked. also thing I hate more is seeing Milner's name on the team/squad sheet

Agree0 Disagree0

Milner does what is asked of him, which is mostly defensive work to cover for Johnson. Other than a dodgy hair cut I can't see what cleverly brings!

Hi Eds

By now Suarez should have realised that the club will not let him leave on his terms. Do you think Suarez will end up handing in a transfer request? {Ed002's Note - Why not take the time to read the posts or give the search engine a shot.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2013 16:00:39
Could potentially be 8 out, 4 in by the time the transfer window shuts.

Spearing should leave soon and I expect Assaidi to be next.

Skrtel or Coates, if not both, are probably on their way, as long as a replacement is brought in (let's hope it's Papa!)

Cissokho to come in as cover/ to challenge for LB.

I'd expect Flannagon to be sold or loaned and Robinson to be loaned if we bring in Cissokho.

Assaidi will probably be going back to Holland rather than on loan to QPR and I expect there to be some news regarding Downing too; probably that he will leave rather than sit on the bench for £80k a week! (Hopefully a replacement will be brought in.)

Finally, let's face it, Suarez is as good as gone. Probably won't happen until nearer deadline day, but come September 2nd, he won't be a Liverpool player! Again, let's hope he is sold abroad (which I am sure he will be) rather than to Arsenal. Also, depending on how soon he leaves could determine what kind of replacement, if any, we get. Perhaps if he were to leave soon, we may get a more established/experienced striker ie Costa, or if it is later on, maybe a young striker to provide cover for Sturridge/Aspas/Borini.

Not in the know, just (trying) to use common sense!

Last thing, I'm very happy with our pre season, the signings we have made and the way BR is going about his business. I am so pumped for the new season, top 4 here we come!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In all honesty do you think the first team has been strengthened as br said he had strengthened the squad but not the first team as personally without any added first team replacements I am afraid 4th is out of sight

With the likely departures of Stewart Downing, Oussama Assaidi and Luis Suarez imminent, I was looking at wingers linked with Liverpool this summer.

Cissoko looked ok against Everton, not great but decent, I guess we'll see how his loan goes.

Coates looking so dodgy, if we can get rid of him is Ilori still the most likely replacement Eds? Who might be interested in Coates? Loan or buy?

Similarly if Skrtel goes is Papa the most likely replacement right now? Thanks again Eds & best of luck for the final weeks of the window. {Ed002's Note - Try the search function - nothing has changed about these players.}

Hi Eds

A question for ed001/002 if your around

Do we know if the rumours of interest in Muriel were true or just rumours?

Also seen that one of the eds said that work is currently being put into identifying CB targets, do we know who these targets could be yet and is this player going to he Skrtels replacement

Think a steikeforce of Sturridge, Aspas, Muriel and Costa would be immense all skillful, pacey and lots of strength in Costa to bully defenders to offer up a different option

Cheers {Ed002's Note - As I have explained, I am not aware of any Liverpool interest in Muriel. I could only speculate right now about CBs beyond what has been discussed.}

I think Liverpool should go for someone like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. I know he is 29 but he would be a good signing for a season or 2 if we could get a good price. Guaranteed goals. I do realise he did sign a contract extension last year so a fee may be high

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd rather we didn't sell Suarez to Arsenal but if we did it wouldn't be the end of the world - we had him last season (in top form) and we still only finished 7th. Add to that the fact that he is best with the team built around him, will take some time to settle in, and misses a decent chunk of league games, and he may not have as big an impact at Arsenal as many are predicting.

If we could replace him with a goalscoring AM and a wide attacker (eg/ Michu+Costa) I wouldn't write us off for the top 4 even if we do sell to Arsenal, and especially not if we use some of the money to bring in a top class cb - something that Arsenal are painfully lacking!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I honestly think he would have little impact at Arsenal. The won naught with Van Persie and he's arguably a much better striker. Personally, I would have taken then £40M+1 offer (but would have required a transfer request out of Suarez), avoided all the drama and allowed us to go on our way.

Agree0 Disagree0

As it stands this could be the best thing to happen to Liverpool. With Rogers comments last night and Carra's today this is all bringing the club together.

We are proving we are not going to be a push over, and building a good little squad in the process. Built on the ethics of all the club stands for.

We are at very good stage at the moment in our progress from the shambles that was. So it is essential that we stick to our guns and do not sell any star players to a rival. No matter what. We should not have done this with Torres either. It sends out the wrong message. Whether he was finished or not.

Suarez needs to be sold to a European club and more than likely will. Real Madrid are waiting in the wings.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2013 15:02:54
With Eriksen being publicly being made available at the right price, why is it he is only attracting concrete interest from Russia & Ac Milan at the moment? At 10-20 million he would surely be a steal for us especially with our youth policies and a sensible buy as we are in the market for an attacking midfielder - It just saddens me why we continue to be linked with his name but show no sign of making a bid

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2013 17:24:08
It's been stated repeatedly by eds and reds that he continues to speak to the press in a manner which is making prospective clubs nervous, and there is tall that his performance level this season has not been as high as expected

He will be sold nearer deadline day when his price will be low and he can demand more wages.

Things seem to be progressing nicely this week in terms of transfers,
Assaidi has gone to QPR to get valuable experience.
Spearing looks set for a transfer to Bolton(shame really because he actually wants to play for the club unlike others)
Rumours circulating about potential moves for Downing, Skrtel and Coates.
We also now hold immense power over Suarez's career we could fine him everyday for his poor attitude and let him rot in the reverses(which would be to good for him) or we could sell him at a realistic price of around £45-47million.
Now with these players gone or going we could examine players we actually have a chance of signing
CBs: Alderweireld, Papadopoulos, Sakho, Badstuber(I don't think he's part of Guardiola's plans)
LBs: Cissokho, Melgarejo
CDM/CM/CAM: Luiz Gustavo, Livermore/Sandro(if Spurs sign Capoue) Eriksen(unlikely but it would be nice)
LW/RW: personally I can't see us signing a winger however we've been linked with a couple and would probably only sign one on loan e.g. Shaquiri/Atsu
ST/CF: Who knows, 1 in is a certainty and as always your guess is as good as mine, Muriel(Work permit wouldn't really be an issue; "exceptional talent" rule) Eto'o seeing as Anhzi are in meltdown, Lamela (we could use the FSG link to try get a deal)
Finally: youth players to get a chance again this year: Sterling, Ibe, Wisdom, Yesil, Lloyd Jones, McLoughlin, and maybe teixeira (if his back holds up)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well targets depend on sales but seeing as we bid (apparently) £20m+ for costa/HM we have money plus loan of assaidi and sale of spearing, means even w/out Saurez money we aren't broke, but if you add £40m after he's gone (other 5-10 we get from him towards agents fees, tax etc) we could really strengthen. For me I'd try:
Lb:cissokho/melgarejo (just loan cover don't mind which)
Forward: either costa or muriel would be idle but both could be difficult
CB: papa, alderweireld
DM/CM: want a bit of athleticism, Diame (not everyone's cup of tea, but cheap) or kondogbia
And if there is money left over maybe a wee gamble: Ericksen, Griezman, Boudebouz, or konaplyanka (dunno his price) if not maybe try loan Sinclair or Tello.
Think we could have a great squad but will have to see how things pan out.

The 'Experts' in the media seem to keep reminding us that a team that does not have money will no longer be able to win the PL. "The days of Notts Forrest are gone"

If the Money teams are ManU, ManC, and Chelsea, who do you think could win the PL with a squad that has been grown and how long do you think it will take.

I think at the minute the best bets are Liverpool and Spurs but can't see it for 3 or so years.

Note: I'm just talking about money here not size of club.

Liverpool on the other hand have loads of homegrown players that we have either brought and had them come through the ranks or are scousers that have been at the club since day 1. I read in Marca that Suarez did the same to Groningen in 2006 to force a move to Ajax for less than what he was worth. He ended up going there for more than original offer.

So now he has bit a player like he did in Ajax when he left to Liverpool, and also tried legal actions like he did when he went from Groningen to Ajax. Just shows what kind of person he is. Suarez is much more important than the club and supporters that have stood by him, and he proves it over and over again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yeah he def has an agenda . But don't understand why Arsenal . Players have left them to play for other clubs . Compared with the start of last season, this seasons squad (even without Suarez) looks so much stronger on paper.
The new starting 11 plus the options we will have on the bench will earn us so much more points.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I actually think we are looking better on grass than we do on paper. The players have worked a lot on adapting the system from last season (likely as a result of the imminent departure of Suarez). The front line(s) that have played in the pre-season games have all been quick and very fluid in their movement which has created far more openings than our goal tally suggests. As the sharpness comes with every game hopefully we will take more of these chances and see some teams get a real spanking from us this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Your spot on mikey. Young kids are a year older. Also have more attacking options now .

Agree0 Disagree0

Mikey, I am very optimistic about the new season and Rodgers has my full support, I think the way he has added depth to the squad for little money has been inspired .

But both Rodgers and Ayre have said repeatedly that we now need quality, to me that translates as two top drawer first choice players ( three if Suarez leaves ), otherwise we will be in the mini group from sixth to eighth again .

I am not being negative, just realistic, and I realise how difficult this will be without Champions League football .

If Rodgers and Ayre realise this, I for one am not going to argue with them, they are the experts after all .

Agree0 Disagree0

How so?

We’re stronger? Please tell me who covers Enrique if he’s injured? Robinson. no he’s gone.

Tell me what happens if Mignolet is injured? Jones, same as last year

Midfield the same as Alberto has replaced Shelvey. On paper that's a reserve player from Spain against first team and EPL experience or if you dislike Shelvey then say Suso. whos also gone.

Up front? Aspas for Suarez? Really. Better?

Only improvement on paper is the balance sheet, which is what FSG are interested in. Only one I see as better is Toure for Carra. But overall a weaker squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Who covered Enrique last season?
Not Robinson, it was Glen Johnson so we are the same in that department anyway and by the looks of it we will be signing another LB on loan so we will be stronger.

Depending on your opinion of Mignolet you could argue we are stronger in the GK area because he is better than Pepe.

We are looking for another AM as everyone knows so we will be stronger in that department, not to mention having Allen back to full fitness and a much improved Jordan Henderson.

Aspas was never bought to replace Suarez, he was an extra forward so when Suarez leaves we will sign someone else.

Dont judge a job that is half done, why be negative when we have won 6 on the run, scored 17 and conceded 1 without Suarez or Sturridge?

Agree0 Disagree0

Crunch, sometimes it's not about comparing individual players FIFA/FM scores to each other, but how the team plays as a whole.

Go back and re-watch the shambles that were the Toronto FC and Roma friendlies from last year, then watch the ones from this year and tell me the team is not playing miles better than we were this time last season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree0

The article at Marca says that he wants to leave to a CL team, that there's no clause that forces LFC to sell, yada yada

Aspas looks like a really decent buy! Alberto's technique for the volley was also top draw. Borini was unlucky not to get a couple, unfortunately for him he just seems like an unlucky person. Needs a bit of a break to get him up and running.

I can't help but wonder who we will sign if Costa falls through with suarez departing. Looks like Rodgers will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat! Regardless of age, Spurs have got an excellent player in soldado. I think there is a good chance he will pay off that fee with champions league football.

The reason I ask is without CL it will be hard to attract massive names without spending big money, which we may have but shouldn't spend on big player. What do you guys think, should we chase big names or what?

Have you got any ideas in the sort of players we should be aiming for? {Ed002's Note - Obviously it is impossible to say who people have heard of and who they haven't heard of - I was surprised so few knew who Mkhitaryan is. If Cissokho is a household name, then expect to be pleased.}

Why are so many LFC fans against selling LS to Arsenal. The main reason given is that they are our rivals (for 4th place). This is not the case though, because since we dropped out of the top 4 several years ago now we have finished well behind them - 12 points last season.

Our rivals now are the likes of Everton, Tottenham and maybe teams like Stoke City. Tottenham have strengthened hugely for the new season on established high profile players, whereas we have bought in the £4-6 million bracket. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but in my opinion the players we have brought in so far will not do anything to get us higher up the table. I repeat, in my opinion.

Rogers has stated himself that the 4 players he got in at the beginning of the window will improve the squad, and now he wants to bring in players to improve the first 11.

Losing LS is massive and to bring in a player(s) who gets anywhere near replacing him will be not only expensive, but extremely difficult considering we are out of all European competition this season.

Most of the names being mentioned on this site are players who like LS want to go to teams in the CL, so it's a vicious circle really.

Nevertheless, to get back to my main point, right now I don't see Arsenal as a main rival, and what's more, I bet they don't see us as any threat to their chances of making the top 4. They will be more worried about Tottenham.

KBL

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You my friend are deluded, Stoke City finished 13th last season, 19 points behind us! How are they on our level?

Just because Spurs have signed players for high fees, it doesn't mean they will be successful. In my opinion, it also means they are selling Bale because Levy is careful with the budget so he won't allow AVB a net spend of nearly £60 million.

We signed players for large fees under KK but it didn't work for us.
Last season Spurs bought players in the lower price bracket you pointed out, players like Dempsey and Sigurdson but they still finished above us so again, price means nothing.

Arsenal are on our level because our goals are the same: top 4.
Any Arsenal fan who believes they can challenge for the title and Champions League are kidding themselves. They won't even be anywhere near favourites for the domestic cups.

We are making clever signings who fit into a system because the days of outbidding teams are over, we need an overall squad of good players who are committed and technically sound. Their price tag or star status is irrelevant.

Agree0 Disagree0

You must be crazy if you think Stoke is a rival to us. if we give LS to Arsenal we will struggle to make the top 4 as we will hand a 30+ goals as season striker to a team we could catch the quickiest out of the top 4 from last year, plus you state Spurs are a rival but they finished 1 point off Arsenal hhhmmmm so your logic on the matter just makes no sense! Secret Arsenal fan me thinks!

Agree0 Disagree0

You are definitely not a LFC fan if u say Stoke are our rivals. They were in relegation battle last season and it ain't changing for them this season either. We on the other hand will fight for top4, so get back to the Manc page where u belong.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you mostly but what I do not understand is how Spurs seem to be able to attract some big name players? I am not saying I rate them all highly but I do think LFC supporters would be pleased with any of the signings they have made. Soldado was too expensive I think but if it gets them top 4 it was worth it

Agree0 Disagree0

First off who cares what Arsenal and Spurs think of us.
The fact of the matter is that we are aiming for 4th spot, which is currently occupied by Arsenal, so even by the simplest analysis, Arsenal are our chief rival and main competitor for that spot. the fact that Arsenal may see Spurs or somebody else as their chief rival is quite irrelevant as we can do nothing about that, at least not until the season commences and we clock up enough points to put us up there.
Furthermore your analysis suggests that we have either stood still or declined in terms of our ability to compete at this level. Only time will tell if this is the case or not but I think there is a general belief emerging that once the LS business is concluded and we have a full team/squad identified and assembled we will capable of mounting a serious assault on 4th and perhaps even with some luck with injuries and form, perhaps even higher. roll on season 2013/14

Agree0 Disagree0

KBL you are bonkers. Stoke have a better chance of getting relegated than they do of finishing within 20 points of us, yes I said 20 points that's how crazy off I think you are!

Teams will be watching out for us as potential challengers for the European spots. Spurs have done very well so far this summer and luckily Arsenal haven't done anything so far.

Hey peeps, as angry and disappointed you might be at Suarez, the fact is he is just an employee, he could be sold, fired whatever you wanna call it by Liverpool at any time. If hadn't whinged and sulked and was sold off for 50 mil without anyone knowing he wanted to leave. You would all be hating fsg and Rodgers. So in a sense he's done them and us a favor by being such a brat. Btw I'm Uruguayan so I still love the guy because of our national team but am very disappointed in him for Liverpool lol.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I completely agree with you, some people are jus fickle minded and want to jump on the band wagon to blame anyone for anythin, if FSG/Rodgers had sold Suarez without anyone knowin, it would have been 'FSG out, Rodgers out' They seem to forget these people are in a position to judge what we cannot, and if they see a benefit to sellin him so be it, ala Torres and the 'black cloud' he kept over Anfield! The only person blame should be placed upon here is Suarez himself and Suarez alone!

The 2 benefit's to what Suarez has done, is allowed the fan's to see its - A) Suarez actively pushin for the move and B) allowed Liverpool fan's to really see what kinda person he is.
They removed some of the red tinted glasses people wear and they've 'forgot' they stood by him durin the Evra and Ivanovic incidents, cause quite frankly, we now know it was not worth standin by him in his time of need because he is unable to repay the favour, not only that dragged the Liverpool name down durin the process.

Remember, this is the same Suarez who took Groningen to court to pursue a move to Ajax, lost the case and still got the move he wanted. Hand balled on the line in the African World Cup, he bit a player in Ajax, he 'racially abused' Evra, he bit Ivanovic, he's used at least 3 different excuses (English media, Champ's League and an agreement in his contract and/or with Rodgers) to get his move from Liverpool, he's threatened to take us to court and has taken us to the PFA.

I've said it since we bought him and i'll say it again, while Suarez the football player is incredibly talented and top 5 in the world on his day, Suarez the human being is jus a despicable person and someone you wouldn't have the time of day for if he wasn't a footballer.

I was looking for the Valerenga highlights and accidentally clicked on the ones from 2011.
If anyone questions what Rodgers is doing and whether or not our team and squad has been strengthened, then watch both sets of highlights.
We are a completely different team. If he can get us to stop shipping goals then we are going to be serious contenders this year.
I just want this season to start.
Suarez will rue his actions. He is leaving at a really exciting time for our football club.

i really think the longer brendan gets with the group as he calls it the better we will be.only a year ago we were a laughing stock supporters of everton, spurs even newcastle were taking the piss but that is slowly on the decrease and I put that down to a shift in the way the club is viewed from outsiders a lot seem to think we r on the rise again so for me brendan is doing a good job hopefully 1r 2 top additions we can be contenders for top 4 r maybe even more, remember u r talking about a club that was 3-0 down to the best team in the world and still lifted the trophy as rafa said back then we have to believe.

Agree0 Disagree0

The teams we played pre-season will be no where near the teams in the prem .the jury is still out it we be plainly obvious over the first few games how far we have come .i still think it will be a difficult season ahead and with out suarez or a replacement it will be even harder

Hey eds. The metro is reporting that Manchester United are interested in Luis Muriel, I know we were linked with him a few weeks ago, just wondering if you know of any interest. Looks promising
Another thing, we went after mkyitaryan and lost out, are we interested in any other attacking options for the first team in his mould. Jorginho was talked about and Costa also but he seems to be a bit of a different player. thanks in advance, you all do a great job and you seem to know a lot more than all these journalists {Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any Liverpool interest in Muriel. Topic: net spend

Just had a quick look at three clubs who are relatively new to the Premiership and their net spend this close season.

Norwich - Net spend +20m
Swansea - net spend + 24m
Southampton - net spend +19m

contrast that to Liverpool whose net spend this close season has been +2m

Amazing to think that even after the sale of Suarez we will not have spent anything tangible.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I understand what you are saying however there are years when clubs don't need to have a big net spend as they have assets within the club that they can remove that allows the club to strengthen without investing tens of millions.

The owners have shown this over the past three windows.

This summer is different as we have removed players that have brought in money that we have then used on new players which given time will become greater assets.

The sale of Suarez will no doubt see the money re-invested however we have to give the new signings and young players time to blossom. If we continue to spend tens of millions above what we have sold then these players will not get the chance. Bare in mind we are only in domestic cups this season, the squad does not need to be massive, just filled with better quality, which I believe we will have. The new signings look good, the potential signings are meant to improve the team further. Yes Suarez will leave but the replacements will improve the team. A new cb, lb and attacking player from the Suarez money you could argue will generate more points than Suarez alone.

I for one trust FSG whole heartily and I think when money needs to be invested they produce. I also believe Rodgers has a great team model he is trying to implement and the players he targets will support that. So yes we may miss out on certain players but in BR I TRUST!

Liverpool - 20 mill

Agree0 Disagree0

Lower teams have to spend the money to try and stay in the premier league.

was the carrol money not used up in january on sturridge and coutinho? {Ed002's Note - It really does not work like that with money. The money comes and goes in and out of the club. It is not in cash in brown envelopes marked "Carroll Money" or anything else.}

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2013 12:00:45
hey ed's. do you think the delay in selling Suarez is that the club are trying to tie up the replacements before shipping him out or are we not going to sell at all. I for one think that if we are to sell that we should do it ASAP to have plenty of time to get in replacements and give them a chance to bed in with the team. I really don't want any deadline day madness. {Ed002's Note - Done to death.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2013 11:52:53
The team has simply not been improved - in fact it's being weakened - perhaps for a season or so.

I do however find it remarkable that the press slated LS, he then castigated the press, then used them to try to engineer a move and put his case, the press then slating him again. Very funny.

Bottom line LS has been very badly advised and can frankly disappear from the club .one can accept he feels BR has broken his word ( not denied by BR) . a man'a word is his honour one may feel and certainly if that's the case he is entitled to feel aggrieved.

Nonetheless, LS abject disregard to the fans is a disgrace.

Hopefully those who cheered him at SG testimonial now know they're cheering for a player that has complete disregard about their support.

But whilst whilst we defend our club . they were only too quick to get rid of AC and other 'deadwood' players .

Bottom line - players and clubs both play the system- the common bond is that both don't actually care about us - the genuine fans.

Ps. Rogers has denied it, check ssn. he said

"There were no promises made - categorically none - and no promises broken, "

Agree0 Disagree0

BR has denied it. He has said there were no promises made.

As for you comment that the team has not improved, that is a very poor observation.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am not convinced we are that much better than at the end of last season and if Agger & Ratboy go then we will be weaker. Aspas looks good in terms of his movement and will start against Stoke and will be an improvement. Is Mignolet better than Pepe? Maybe. Can't see Alberto starting and is Toure better than JC? Not sure. Have we made a significant improvement? NO but we aren't weaker either. If no additions then I would say 6th right now.

Agree0 Disagree0

The team has improved from when KK was in charge and that's without spending as much money and cutting a wage bill as well as having owners who are a lot more cautious in the transfer market.

Agree0 Disagree0

How has the team not been improved?

its also doesn't matter if Liverpool promised anything to saurez, if its not in writing it doesn't mean rubbish. {Ed002's Note - That is simply not true. This is the problem with all of this misinformation being shared, and I appreciate that one of the Eds misinformed everyone that this was the case yesterday.}

Agree0 Disagree0

BR has to tow the line and say that there were no promises made as LFC could be in breach of contract - we'll never know. Maybe the tribunal will sort it otherwise we sell to the highest bidder and move on. We should have learnt from the Torres affair

Agree0 Disagree0

There was an article in the Guardian with a sports lawyer about verbal agreements regarding premier league contracts. Basically, legally, they don't wash. {Ed002's Note - Legally any verbal contract stands up in law, it may simply be more difficult to prove. However, it should be stressed that no one is relaying on such a situation in this matter - and equally no one is relying on there being any "release clause".}

Agree0 Disagree0

"Any such assurances are legally irrelevant as Premier League contracts contain something called an "entire agreement" clause which excludes, or overrides, all prior verbal agreements. Morally it is a different matter, of course." Obviously I'm not a lawyer but I'll take your word for it. {Ed002's Note - As you see - the word "prior" appears. In simple terms this means that the contract overrides anything discussed during negotiation. Any subsequent agreement is enforceable but would need to be proved if disputed. But as I have said, such issues are not a matter of contention.}

Heard a rumour early in the summer that he would be considered, but although I like Henderson and always thought he would come good, I can't help but feel the vice captain role would put too much pressure on him.

I thought Agger was nailed on for it (providing he rejects Barca) or other options were Lucas, Toure and Reina (before he left).

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

NLS:

Don't think so Jay. Could be in line for it in years to come if he keeps his consistency, but of the players starting last night there was only him, Allen and Downing who would be realistically picked. With Allen not there too long and Downing potentially moving away, it seemed the only choice.

Your laughter will be short lived. Having missed out or rather Utd's offer/interest tossed aside by Lewandowski, Thiago and now Fabregas, Fellaini will be your midfield "maestro" by the looks of it and that to for somewhere close to £25 million.

Im heading over to Dublin this weekend for the game, just wondering if anyone knows of any places where our fans are likely to gather pre match?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Red,

To state the obvious, pretty much any bar.

Visiting Dublin a lot I suggest though that you drink a mile or so away from the Temple bar area. The price of a pint goes up about 10 cents every couple of hundred yards you get nearer to it. Check it out for yourself.

Hope you have a good time.

Agree0 Disagree0

I live in Dublin a irish lad Dublin will be grate crack with Liverpool vs celtic any where in temple Bar is usually good but for the night that's in it any bar will do

Agree0 Disagree0

Start off in Temple bar then head to any of the hotel bars close to the Aviva but be warned they will be packed but will be great athmosphere.
Thats my plan anyway

Agree0 Disagree0

The Bars around Baggot Street are usually good craic on matchdays in Aviva- would imagine will be 50/50 on support as Celtic are also massive over here.
If you are looking to get leprechauns and get ripped off then temple bar will be up your street, but if you are looking for a more authentic Irish bars then Kehoes or Bruxelles off Grafton Street are prob best - bruxelles opens v late.

Golden Rule - steer clear of Copper Face Jacks - unless you looking to chase a rough creature

Agree0 Disagree0

Make sure you buy drink in the off licence and drink it in the room . that will cost you a euro or less but a pint in temple bar will cost you 5 euro plus . dublin is dear to drink out all over but temple bar is the dearest, up around lansdowne rd [ some people call it the aviva but I don't ] is where you will get the footy fever kind of thing, I can't wait .

Daily Express has reported that Liverpool are paying £2 million of Pepe Reina's wages to "help finance his loan move to Napoli"! Can somebody please explain to me how this has turned out to be a good deal for the Reds? We lose last season's first choice keeper and still we are paying for him!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2013 11:49:13
No idea mate. I haven't heard much.
But he was pretty good against arsenal. saved a penalty too.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is pretty simple. If we suppose Reina earns 6m a year, Liverpool of course would have to pay him that just to sit on the bench. Apparently no other clubs came in for him, so Napoli took him and they will pay 4m of his wages.
Liverpool, although still paying 2m, save 4m they can spend on other players, that will actually play.

From an economical POV it does make sense.

Agree0 Disagree0

I do believe Liverpool will receive a loan fee from Napoli as well for Reina's services.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mushroom, I doubt it seeing as this is why they pulled out of the Caesar deal. I'd be surprised if we're paying one third of his wages still though, could the papers be spinning the fact that the loan will likely expire the end of May and we will revert to paying his full salary then again?

Agree0 Disagree0

In general Sean, there is usually a loan fee involved between clubs. Unless it is a youngster on loan for development, then it is usually about how much game time they receive.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ya I get that obviously but we're talking about Reina's loan here to Napoli not general loans. Reina was only seen as an option because Qpr asked for a loan fee. That would indicate to me that there is no chance of a loan fee here and it wouldn't make sense to get a loan fee and then us pay some of the wages.

£6m is his annual salary anyway so I'd say they are just lumping everything from May onwards into this £2m we are paying. I.e. They are making out we are paying 33% of his salary while his is at Napoli, if we are paying any I would say no more than 20%

So on that note:

what teams do people on here think could be a bit of a surprise this year.

I would go for Swansea and Sunderland. Good business is pre-season.

Swansea starting from a good foundation could push for top 6.

Sunderland what a turn-over in players have got in some interesting ones - Di Canio could be a surprise or could tank massively.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Norwich are looking interesting. They could go either way but Houghton seems a good manager so I expect them top ten.

Agree0 Disagree0

NLS:

Thought about them live, seem to be getting plenty of goal scoring options, looking forward to seeing van Wolkswinkel, not so sure about defence though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Swansea looked really good in the Europa, that could be for one of the following reasons:

1: They are really good
2: They were playing a poor team
3: I've spent all summer watching womens football, clouded my judgement.

Possibly a combination of the three Op6?

Hi peeps,

I just don't know why LFC just offer suarez "officially" to all NON-PL teams for £50M. and offer hime to Real Madrid for £40 plus Xabi Alonso.

Xabi would come back and hasn't much time remaining on his current deal. Real may be forced to deal if Xabi comes forward and asks for the move. I know we have midfielders but Allen and Hendo are not a shade on Xabi.

IF not and no bid is made for him, then I would honestly leave him in the reserves for the ramainder of his contract until he commits to his contract. If he refuses to play then I would fine him weekly until he gets the idea. {Ed002's Note - Alonso has the offer of a new contract on the table and an offer of a move to Italy next summer. If he wants a move now there is one interested club - and that is in Turkey and to be honest there interest seems to have waned. If Liverpool were to show an interest in him, which they haven't, I am sure agreement could be reached with Real Madrid - as has been explained before.}

I wonder what Suarez's agent's role is in all this? No one is coming out of this smelling of roses but Suarez's camp does smell strongly of sewerage {Ed002's Note - There is nothing to report them for. You really need to drop any discussion of contracts, legal issues etc..}

You said Suarez was considering legal options and all this stuff so why is it annoying you when you're the one that first spoke about it? And confused why you don't want to talk about it because its the number one topic on earth at the moment; the interpretation of Suarez's contract. So of course there's going to be legal talk on here all week non-stop, its a given isn't it? You seem to get annoyed by things you really have no control over, you can't possibly think we are all going to stop talking about contracts and legal disputes when its the most talked about thing on the planet at the minute? Didn't manage to catch the game yesterday due to not having the internet in our new place, but what a hit from Luis Alberto. Did the lad play well throughout? He seems to have almost drifted under the radar with his performances in the post-match write-ups by journos.

Also, looks like Kelly has been smashing the bench press since his injury. Absolute tank. Will be great having a defender of his size coming in from corners/set pieces at both ends of the pitch, it's about time we had a beast in our back 4, Skrtel seemed a little lightweight considering his size.

Who were the standout performers yesterday?

BR putting a bid for Leighton Baines would be a good idea. Brilliant player. (even if his choice of team currently is a bit poor)

Best that could happen:

We get a good left back, straight into the first team strengthening us, and with a quality back-up in Enrique.

Everton are weaker and annoyed.

Manu miss out on a target. (they seem to be having more problems than us at the minute! Rooney wants out and no-one will sign)

Worst that could happen:

We don't get him.

Manu have to pay more.

Everton have more money to strengthen.

Hi eds and fellow reds.

Observations in my opinion from pre season so far.
We look a solid unit with some quick slick passing and good to see goals are coming from various players and not just relying on one. Amazed at how fit the players look already. Going forward WOW, we are quick on the break with quick slick passing with players running in all directions which is a defenders nightmare. Still bit concerned about defense but hopefully BR is on the case.
New players seem to have settled in well and the whole squad (apart from one) is showing a desire to play for the manager/club.
Think the way the club is handling the Suarez affair is great. He has now backed himself into a corner, now let's wait and see how he gets out of it.
Exciting times ahead.

Not bothered if Suarez leaves now, disrespectful to the shirt. I remember when our last "superstars" left the club to win trophies, we went on to win CL. Come on red men let's prove to Suarez he made a mistakes, 3rd spot & CL footy next season,

Its hard to judge if Liverpool have been good in pre-season or the teams we have played have been poor, 6 wins and lots of goals?

I think the Celtic game will be the toughest test and we will see a fairly strong team from Rodgers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I love Celtic, but I'm sure we'll run rings round them.

All of the players look fit and hungry and the team is a handful for ANY opponent.

So Barcelona rate Agger at £14 Mil and Luiz at £30 mil. Personally think it should be the other way round as Agger is twice the player. Who would you rather have because I think Luiz is a liability!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Especially as ones a defender and one gives it a go but would rather play "slightly" more forward!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd take Agger over Luiz and his clumsy late tackles and play acting any day. Luiz is so over rated, he's a liability. Whilst being a little injury prone I wouldn't swap Agger for any defender.

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool will say Agger is not for sale. If he wants a move I'm sure Liverpool would probably want in the region of 30-35m. If they could convince Sanchez to join (unlikely) I'd take him plus a 5-10m.

Alright guys,

Does anyone else think Allen for the past few games has be fantastic, his movement and touches of skill have been quality. If he consistantly starts playing like the way he has done. god lol i'm starting to rate the guy. None seems to rate him but that's due to is poor turnouts last season, but to be fair to him he was nursing a shoulder injury?:S

Think he's going to help the team out a lot this season! touch wood.

On the other hand, I hope Rogers doesn't get rid of Assidi as he really deserves a chance I think he's a fantastic player, last nights performance by him I though was good his perfect touches in the box laying players up while holding back the defender.

so. I think if Allen keeps up his recent performances hell be like a new signing aswell as Assidi

was also good seeing Kelly back on the pitch! i'm quite a fan of his

Just my thoughts, thought I would share to see if anyone else feels the same.

I would suggest its paramount we keep hold of Agger more than Hannibal Lector as let's face we will implode without him. We have a good chance of finding players to replace Luis and his goals with the 40-50 million we get for him but to find a new Agger? Now that is footballing suicide!

What Liverpool should do is sit down with Suarez and ask him to sign a new deal which if Liverpool fail to get a Champions League place this season then he can leave next season as long as Liverpool receive £45M minimum for him and that he cannot join another Epl team only a foreign club. {Ed002's Note - That is not going to happen. With all the financial trouble at anzhi do you see usoving for any of their players? I know lacina traore had been of previous interest but clearly they have other talented players like denisov, jucelei, zhirkov, eto, willian and lassana diarra. Loved diarra as a player in the premier league and for real and would give great cover in midfield and can also play right back, think there is any chance we will take a look at any?
Thanks, loving the site {Ed002's Note - I really can't sensibly comment. It is not how business works for clubs like Liverpool.}

Will some of our fans wind their necks in please,
Why are you coming on here stating we won't make top four now and without Suarez we'll be on a downward spiral?
I don't get some of you lot, yeah ok question things that don't appear right but where throughout pre-season have we looked anything other than a promising side on the up?.
You want to call the manager no matter what he does, If he talks in the press you say he's talking too much, If he says Suarez is going nowhere he gets laughed at. Why?. Is it because Suarez has a 3 year contract and we don't want to sell to anyone else in the prem?. I suspect so, so why all the manager bashing?, I've called him in the past but I honestly believe he's doing a great job now and he's settled in really well,
Certain people keep coming on and slating the likes of Downing but can't you see how much he wants to fight for the shirt when he's playing?, surely we should be happy with this fact not berating him at every turn,
Apparently our squad is poor and we'll finish somewhere between 5th and 10th too. really? have you been watching pre-season?. Do we not look like a side that can pass anyone off the park?, do we not look like a side that creates many many chances no matter what the opposition?, did we not outscore most teams the 2nd half of last season?, all this I might add a lot of the time without the nutter that is Suarez,
I get the feeling with a lot of modern fans that nothing will ever be good enough hence the change in Anfield atmosphere,
Well ill tell you all this, there better be a change in that atmosphere this year because the way Rodgers has dealt with Suarez and the things he has to say about the club in the press alongside people like Gerrard giving up his whole career to support our cause we need to be putting something back too,
Anyone seen what's happening to Anzhi?. Right, then be careful what you wish for,
Ill judge at xmas, until then start backing the club up and giving it some support, you never know you might be pleasantly surprised.

We can all see he is definitely doing his best, but at the moment this is not good enough - we ain't strengthening our team Carroll - Suarez - assaidi - reina. - carragher - downing all these gone, finished or potentially going and you reckon we are better off with aspas - mignolet - borini - toure and Alberto I beg to differ

Hi everyone,

Just registered, I'm glad there is a lot more positivity so good work eds.

My opinion if Suarez goes is that there no chance we would sign a Jackson Martinez type player. Purely because DS is no1 striker, we play with 1 striker and he didn't move to us to play second fiddle 6 months down the line.

The Suarez money can be re-invested more wisely in other positions. DS showed that if fit he can bag 20 goals for us this season.

Thoughts anyone?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I kind of agree but then again if he gets injured who will step up and take his place borini? That guy can't even score againsy really poor teams! CAM/winger DM, LB and CB of class and well be fine

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair no one is expecting a Jackson Martinez type player. When Suarez is sold, I am almost certain we will take the money and look to buy a top RW and LW. Someone like Diego Costa, Muriel, Konoplyanka, Bernard (if he is not already sold).
Someone like them who are predominantly wide forwards. While our centre forwards will be Sturridge, Aspas and Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

I certainly don't expect a jackson martinez type replacement either (hence my post) but the amount of times you see people if we have any interest in him or any other top striker I think it is a pointless question. and I think solid cover would like aspas or costa if we sign him, who will other wise being played out wide usually

Hi eds
Surely by now Liverpool have fully accepted that we have to sell Suarez, he has such a strong desire to leave and has said so much that it is clear there is no going back now. Given this situation they will obviously want to get rid ASAP so if they do not wish to sell to arsenal would it be in heard of for us to approach Real Madrid and suggest a package we seemed to be acceptable instead of waiting for them to make the first move?
Cheers {Ed002's Note - Liverpool could do that but it is a waste of effort - if Real Madrid are going to bid then they will.}

Borini surprised me massively yesterday, he was desperately unlucky not to score a number of times. I think those who rubbish him may regret it come the end of the season. I feel if he gets a goal or two, he won't stop scoring, he has pace and excellent movement he just needs to fine tune his finishing!

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, many people have not started off on fire, but how they have played is what has mattered. Ian rush for one, also LS kept hitting the post when he first arrived 11 goals, difference is he kept getting on the pitch to show what he could do.

Think Borini deserves our support until he is given a decent run and a chance to shine.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2013 09:45:23
i would say he would be 1 to play centre only, as didi hamann said last night he dosent get seen in the best light on the wings, but if you see his movement in the centre its much better and anyone that has played any football can see his running in the channels is perfect for countinho and gerrard to slip in. with sturridge prob first choice suarez head firmly stuck up his u know what fabio could be a very important member of r squad and for those that slate this lad who has been very unlucky imo since he joined the club with injuries need to remember loyalty goes both ways supporters and players.

Agree0 Disagree0

He kinda reminds me of owen, sure owen had great finishing skills, but borini is running in channels, fast, has pace, only lacks confidence and a lil bit of arrogancy, what other think of him?

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, I think we should give the guy a break, and support hm fully. He's definitely talented, and has good movement. I think he just needs time to settle, and some confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

I like him but I still think he's trying too hard. Needs to relax a little bit.

Agree0 Disagree0

Based on pre-season, Borini deserves an extended run in the first team. Let's see what he can do when fit.

With our lack of decent defending last season, especially from set pieces and corners, I would understand if we lost Agger and Skyrtel as long as we bought decent defenders. If only Sami was 23 again!

We don't need defenders who can play out of defence, we need them to clear the bloody thing in the danger area, that's why we got Toure.

Agger though is the best of last years bunch and has shown he loves LFC, he just needs to buck up a little.

Oh yeh! and Kelly needs a haircut! and Johnson needs to shed a few pounds!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree Big Bill, whilst undoubtedly our best defender, he still was at fault for a few goals! But for me our main problem in defending is at Fullbacks, why do they never try and stop crosses coming in? Over the last few seasons more and more clubs do it, Is it to keep the shape? I don't get it stop the ball coming into the box and you will not concede as many! Simples!

Agree0 Disagree0

We can definately replace those 2 with 2 quality defenders in Papadopoulos and Sakho. But the problem is, is there enough time?
Wouldn't it be too much to change the whole defence in 1 season?

That is why the best scenario for LFC is to keep Agger, sell Skrtel and get Papadopoulos.

If it happened once or twice, he is angry but how do the other players he represents see this.

He must be genuinely embarrassed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

With a lot of help from Arsenal, Pere Guardiola has single handedly ruined Suarez at Liverpool. He has allowed this situation to escalate knowing full well we had set a minimum price for the player. Its obvious to me that the agent and Arsenal are working together to get the outcome they seek. Funny how both Suarez and Wenger have come out using the word 'amicable' in the last few days as a description of how they want the deal to be concluded. This is football however and utd did the same with RVP so who can blame Arsenal and Wenger, not us. There is however, if and when a deal is concluded, a strong case in favor of Liverpool as to how Arsenal obtained confidential contractual information for them to bid an exact amount of £40M + £1 in relation to a non-existent release clause. I hope LFC report them to the Premier League once all this has settled just as in the Ziege case against us. This is Anfield and we will never be moved {Ed002's Note - Everything that has happened is of Suarez's own doing - no one else. There is nothing to report Arsenal for.}

saw this comment on a football highlights website, seems interesting and I wanted to share it here.

"In the preseason of 08-09, Liverpool played Valerenga. The score was 1-4 then as well. A lot of similarities from that game. First a spanish midfielder scored (Alonso, Alberto), and then Valerenga equalized. Next, the spanish #9 scored (Torres, Aspas). After that, a goal was scored by a player with long hair (Benayoun, Kelly). And last, a goal was scored by a young player coming off the bench with dark skin (N'gog, Sterling). We finished second that year."

players were eager to impress yesterday, and I am impressed. can't wait for the Stoke game.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

And they played with a round shaped object, and also a referee. The same cheer was heared when goals were scored and the same hot dog van was parked outside. theoretically if suarez and skirtil go, we also have 25 additional money to spend we will have around 80 to 90 million to spend. surely that means we will have 35 mill to spend on a striker, 25 mill to spend on a attacking midfieder or winger, 15 mill to spend on a defender and the rest to spend on a left back. If this turns out to be true I will be estatic because witht this money and targets we will be able to transform our squad into top 3 candates. we will have a allround quality squad with no weak links

The situation with LS should not detract from the promising work in pre-season. It is easy to simply write off victories and clean sheets as inconsequential but on the whole there is a lot of positives to be taken into our new season. Hopefully this is not undermined by Suarez and his web of lies and finger pointing. I hope we receive an offer that is sufficient so we can end our association with him definitively and move forward as soon as possible.
Our signings have all showed promise so there is hope for the rest of the transfer window, albeit it's taking a little longer than we may have hoped.

I thought Rodger's interview with the Echo was perhaps his strongest piece of management to date, hopefully this is a definitive point for him too. On the field the higher pressing is positive, as is the quicker starts, this is part of the team evolution for next year.

Why do people automatically expect loyalty from someone who is basically a self employed contractor who comes from the other side of the world? Do you think that Liverpool were worried about Suarez being loyal to Ajax when they came knocking. Why is it any different when Arsenal/Real come knocking now?

Anyone with half a brain realised when he signed the contract last year that it was a desperate attempt to keep him one more year. The contract says as much. Liverpool's lawyers were just smart enough to outwit his lawyers or agent, who by the way if he does not fire them he is a bigger person than I expected.

"Oh no we won't say you can leave for 40m, we will say they can talk to you. Don't worry, basically it means the same thing Luis". What a load of crap. If you are going to agree to put a release clause in someone's contract do it like a man and don't be a pussy about it.

Don't get me wrong Suarez was wrong to go to the press and it was a crap thing to do, but what do you expect from someone who racially insults people and bites other players, multiple times.

The most depressing thing about this is that now everyone knows how Liverpool under Rodgers/Ayre do business with contracts. Do you think they will get away with that again? Either every decent players contract will have a bullet proof release clause or we will never sign another player worth having a release clause.

Oh sorry I forgot all these world class players will sign just because they want to be loyal to the club and ask for pound a week wages!

This is the funniest post I've read this morning. Clubs don't spend huge transfer fees to put release clauses into their players contracts and players looking for a big move wouldn't be wise to ask for one either. The club have not duped Suarez and his agent, infact it is the Suarez camp that have misunderstood the legalities of their contract with LFC. I doubt you're a Liverpool supporter, the whole post stinks of an outsider. Oh and I think we pay a lot more than a pound a week in wages, a lot lot more so. Forget about loyalty, how about a professional honoring a contract that he has not so long ago signed!

OK then good, goodbye, you will never be bigger than LFC, I do not care how good you are Thanks for the few memories you have left behind, but know there are not as many as Rush, Barnes, Yeats or anyone else with a bit of class and loyalty have shown. Good to read in the Telegraph that Brendan is to make Suarez rain alone . and until he gets an apology to club and fans for his behavior. added to this seems Suarez is a messy situation with LFC's view of his contract being considered the correct interpretation and that they have the right to seek market value based on current transfers.
Added to that apparently Henry will not sell to Arsenal.
Advice for Suarez. sue and sack your agent. make up with LFC quickly and try and renegotiate your release clause value for the future.

Suarez will not make any apology. Hi to all fellow Lpool fans out there are you like me getting really bored with all this Suarez talk, we all know that he can not stay with us now with everything he's said and done and is really bringing shame to our beloved club.
I can understand why BR doesn't want to let him go to Arsenal who will be challenging us for that C League place but the club surely can't take too much more of this and so I think soon as a decent offer comes in hopefully from Madrid then he's gone and then we can carry on with the task of bringing in new faces. With this distraction going on I'm concerned BR has taken his eye of the ball with some players we should be in for such as the Ajax pair of C Erickson & especially Alderweireld who's a great CD and available on a Bargain price £6 - £7m and of all teams to sneak in and pinch him from right under our noses Everton have had their bid accepted and I for one will be really gutted if we lose this guy So PLEASE BR don't overlook this guy and get him signed on the dotted line. So if we can't buy any new players until we sell Suarez let's put that into action Now. YNWA

I would rather have a first class Suarez than 50mil, but if not the money would come in handy and soften the blow.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez could go on a 9 month pub crawl from England to Brazil and Uruguay would still pick him for their squad.

Rumours are QPR wish to take Oussama Assaidi on Loan for a season.

Would also like to say I feel Rodgers has handled the Suarez situation very very well.

Its done assaidi to qpr on loan

Having been previously unconvinced by assaidi, whaty I've seen of him in pre-season so far suggests he's getting the hang of our system. If he has a future at LFC, a loan to QPR would seem less than ideal as he'd simply revert to being an out and out winger in a boring, one dimensional kick and rush team.

Ed02, What punitive recourse do you imagine the club will employ to address the Suarez comments?

I wouldn't think DF giving an apology would help his case if he were to try and avoid a punishment by claiming innocence. {Ed002's Note - As I have explained on many, many occasions, the club want to sell him. They want the best deal they can get and should be looking to get this done as soon as possible. Getting involved in any squabbles over the player and doing anything to attract further attention to the matter is not going to do any useful at all.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the Valarenga game showed us exactly why we can't really use Assaidi in the prem. He neglects his defensive work too much.

Eds can you honestly see us letting Agger go when we would prefer Skrtle to move on? I know you said that we would we're open to the idea a number of months back, but can we really afford to lose Agger this summer?

When you consider we are linked with both Alderweireld and Papadopulos I think both of these players would compliment Agger at the centre of defence.

However I don't think a Papadopulos and Skrtle partnership would work, on the other hand maybe a Alderweireld and Skrtle one would.

I would much prefer to see Skrtle depart this summer and Agger staying. Even if it is just a loan move to get his wages off the wagebill. With the sales already done Carroll, Shelvey and impending departures of Suarez, Downing, Spearing and Assiaidi, I don't think we would be in the need for fu ds for new recruits so can't see the need to let him leave.

He's one of the most committed and loyal players in our squad and I think we should be keeping him at Anfield.

Jonesred {Ed001's Note - we really would prefer to keep Agger out of choice, but if enough is offered it would be considered. The question is whether Agger would be interested, it wouldn't be the first time he has refused to even consider an offer made for him.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agger has to stay. He is one of the faces of the club and one of those that embody what the club should be about. Him and Lucas are my favorite players in the squad atm.

Agree0 Disagree0

Reports are that Agger is willing to go to Barcelona.

Please no, not Agger :( a Liverpool without Agger at the moment for morale and loyalty would be pretty hard.

Some observations from tonights game.

~Ibe is stronger, more skilful and better running direct at the defence than sterling who depends mostly on his pace. Ibe can drift in an make runs through the middle without him being bullied off the ball, Sterling isn't strong enough when he drifts inside.
~Luis Alberto is a great buy. Would love to see him and Coutinho play together. He adds height to the midfield and has great technique. I see him being used only through the middle as he lacks a bit of pace.
~Allen has gotten some drive. Pity he's not a finisher, He'll add quality to the bench and with him, Gerrard, Hendo, alberto and Coutinho, We have those middle two positions covered well
~Downing was impressive, but he's 29 and on 80k a week, He may just have done enough to buy him time till the January Transfer window.
~Assaidi's strength and hold up play in the box was impressive. Those one touch set ups and flicks were great.
~Borini seems to have the workrate but not the natural born talent. (somewhat like a Kuyt). He tries so hard but things just don't happen for him.
~We are better with set pieces with kelly in the team as he adds an extra big guy in the box.
~Coates is very suspect with the ball at his feet. He's a bit clumsy.
~Flanaghan got forward well tonight.
~We defended too deep in the 2nd half, creating too much of a gap between midfield and Borini. {Ed001's Note - is it me or has Kelly bulked up while out injured? He looks a lot less skinny than he was last season.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Maybe he has grown his hair in other places too ed to make him look bulkier.

Agree0 Disagree0

Completely agree Ed! He used to be a really powerful runner up the line. He looks every inch a CB now.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kelly has definitely gotten bigger, I agree. Appears to have lost some pace as well though (or perhaps is holding back a bit while he gets match fit) which is a little worrisome.

Agree0 Disagree0

We should try and sell Coates and Downing.

Ibe is good. Sterling is good. We need to manage them well. I wonder whether we can get those hormones that was given to Messi for Sterling.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kelly is a beast of a man! Looks like Conan the barbarian with his new hairstyle!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Ed. He seems to have hit the gym and bulked up. I think it is good for him if he wants to play center back as he looks a lot stronger.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep kelly has bulked up, but he seems to have lost a yard of pace since kenny had him bombing down the line a few seasons back. would like to see him given a chance at center back. i think he's be better than coates and he's better on the ball.
has anyone notices br's weight loss?
