tom werner sayin rodgers is the man for liverpool and there sure he will prove it this season that's why they kept him

Believable6 Unbelievable6

07 Aug 2015 23:19:38
Considering they're successful businessmen FSG seem very naive. Credit to the Reading Chairman, he saw through Rodgers very quickly. Oh well 80 million quid down the drain again so that can back 'their man'.

Hope so Hampo, really needs to get things right.
Best team in the league each week and stay clear of injurys.

Good season ahead hopefully, good luck to all redmen for the season.

What do you expect him to say? They have to back him after deciding not to sack him. They are hardly going to come out and run him down.

It's pure 'last chance saloon' stuff from Werner. A public backing, yes, but also a thinly veiled message that Rodgers must improve after their support and backing in the market or he's out. All of the noises coming out of both camps points to it being his last chance as boss.

Irish - I expected them to sack him after the absolute disaster and humiliation last year, not least in the Champions League

Not really 80mil down the drain Essex.

There good players we have signed, who have also signed for our football club on long contracts.

If Brendan fails this year he will be gone.

Someone else will come in to a great team.

I agree Essexred, but for some reason they didnt. We have to move on and accept their decision. Going on about it and slagging the manager off won't help anybody now. The seadon starts today so we have to stay positive and see what happens. Cheers

Werner has focused on how this season, all of what Rodgers wanted has been handed to him, and explicitly said he expects a big improvement. Sounds more like a "no more excuses" kind of statement to me.

Interestingly, Ayre said a similar thing, that LFC have acquired ll the targets Rodgers wanted, and even BR's best buddy at The Echo, James Pearce has said there are no more excuses.

Looks like all they have said is make it very clear that it is time to deliver.

Agree2 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 14:45:45
Sounds to me, like he's saying last chance we need improvements. We have new staff. Even when we came second i had my doubts over Rogers. We have some quality signings and overall a strong squad. New Coaches now it's all down to the team and Rogers, if he doesn't get top 4 i think we all understand he wil most likely get the axe! Come on lads YNWA hopefully a nice 3 points at stoke!

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 21:45:03
Spot on, AG. Don't know what some on here were reading or concluding based on his comments. He pretty much hung BR out to dry, saying, "this is absolutely your last chance. If you screw up, you will be shown the door."I hope he does make it because it means our club is progressing. But If he fails, there will no longer be Pascoe, Marsh, Balo, Sterling or Studge's injuries to blame or fire to save his neck and that I am happy about because I can longer stand his pathetic deflections in the media.

Once again Liverpool are about to loan an Italian player to an Italian club with a set price upon completion. I have a feeling that Fabio Borini will sign for Fiorentina at the price pre-negotiated before he joins.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

07 Aug 2015 23:17:41
I don't see anything wrong with that? Both clubs agreeing a price now.

If he goes on to have a superb season ya we lose a bit but if he doesn't then they'd most likely have to take him if he makes a set number of appearances. I would assume a set number of appearances locks in the sale or else agreeing the price in advance only leaves a possible upside for Fiorentina.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 06:59:32
Sean we have had issues with our last 2 high profile loans with Italian sides i.e., Juventus and AC Milan and they tried to extend the loans instead of buy Alberto Aquilani.

Reus Is "Flatterd" By LFc interest?
Lacazzette has been "told to leave"?
Gotze's Agent Admints "he could leave Bayern"

Obviously this is all speculation.

but any chance of LFC trying their luck & making Firm Bids for all 3 players?

Dreaming probably but i think we could possibly pull it off before the window closes with Borini & Balo set to leave & allen Injured?

Liverpool drop to 55th in UEFA rankings published today. Lowest in our history. below clubs such as Apoel, Tranzonspor, Metalist Kharkiv and Genk.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2015 16:22:12
Which shows what a joke such ranking are in their current format

Agree9 Disagree4

{Ed002's Note - No it doesn't. It shows that Liverpool has not been playing in European competition and has been relying on the success of others to even be in the position they are in.}

07 Aug 2015 16:44:51
sam the ranking has its purpose, and as ed002 said, it shows liverpool has not been playing in european competitions for the past years.

we haven't been doing well, if lfc want better they must earn it.

Agree4 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 19:03:54
Is playing in European Competitions the only marker for success and as for the matter that Liverpool are depending on others, I will say that yes they might be 5th in the premier league but for sure they are still in the top 15 clubs in the world even in terms of players and a consistent run in the champions league will get us to quarter finals with some luck.

Agree3 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 17:46:43
I'm sure FSG and the sponsors think it's vital but I imagine most fans couldn't give a monkeys about the rankings

Agree1 Disagree6

{Ed002's Note - Nonse se. Right now Liverpool need to get as best they can in the rankings - if the club makes the Champions League next season it is Pot 4.}

Sigh. Seems an eternity ago we were ranked number one.

I was born in the late 70's. Although Liverpool has won a lot in my lifetime, it was mostly when I was too young to really appreciate it. I probably started supporting Liverpool at the age of 13, that would have been in 1990.
I would love nothing more than seeing my beloved Liverpool win the Premier League, BUT no matter what, I will support my team. If many think our manager is not good enough, I will still support him and my team. If many feel our deffence is weak, I will still support my team. If many feel our squad is not good enough to finish in the top 4, I will still support my team. If we lose a match we should have won, I will still support my team. At the start of another season, I love that we now have access to so much of information, and have so many opinions. With the new season starting, I plead with SUPPORTERS to have opinions, but remember we are SUPPORTERS. So let's remain Red. Let's remain loyal. Let's not over critisize our beloved team. The power of positive energy is amazing.

James Milner confirmed as vice captain. Good choice in my opinion as he is a true professional and role model to the younger players. Still get the feeling Lucas and Skrtel will feel a bit annoyed.

Roll on tomorrow for the start of the season.

Believable16 Unbelievable5

07 Aug 2015 14:46:07
Others have been looked over with the likes of Skrtel Lucas Coutinho all been giving their best for the club before this new arrival who is a wonderful pro yes but still a newbie

Agree8 Disagree13

07 Aug 2015 16:35:47
A decent choice, good professional, going to get lots of game time this season.
Skrtle is not vocal enough to be vice captain and Lucas will likely not get the game time he would like this season, either due to injurys or form.

Agree3 Disagree3

07 Aug 2015 17:01:19
To be fair, Milner is a top professional on big wages who has a ton to prove and Skrtel is not a natural leader (even from the back), Lucas has been in out of the side with injuries (and has been on the verge of moving on for the last few years) and Coutinho isn't quite to that point in his career yet. Not at all against Milner being VC and I hope it drives him on this season.

Agree2 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 17:17:31
To be a captain you have to be able to lead and communicate with others. Skrtel and Coutinho aren't vice captain material imo. There's an argument for Lucas, but is he going to be on the field???

Agree13 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 19:11:03

Apparently Balotelli has rejected a move to the Middle East and an agreement in principle has been made with Fiorentina for Borini.

Any truth in this? Also, are there any other developments in regards to players leaving? Thanks.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - It is correct but Borini will initially be a loan.}

07 Aug 2015 14:40:34
It should be a loan to buy because Italian teams always have a loan with option to buy for an agreed price, but, always do that with no intention of paying that amount.

Not strictly transfer banter but I hope the eds will allow it to lighten the mood.

OK - you wake up tomorrow morning and there's a car waiting to take you to Melwood. You are taken into a secret underground void and through a series of locked door where a man in a suit and sunglasses greets you. He smells vaguely of sandalwood but you conclude that's not important.

"We've been watching you on that Banter site. You seem to know your stuff. We've chosen you to carry out one special task"

"We've built a time machine that we can use to go back in time and bring any one former reds player to add to the squad this season. But only one".

"You can pick anybody you like except Djimi Traore - we went back and erased him from history". It can be any other player but remember - the machine can only take one. We've a season to play so pick somebody the team needs - not necessarily your fave player"

So - which player from which year do you bring forward to help this year's campaign?

It's hard for me to be positive this season after last seasons atrocity, and although changes have been made, the most important one has not. So for the sake of argument, is it possible for BR to turn things around? Does he have the ability to make believers of his doubters? I know how you feel about the manager ed001, and i agree, so i'd like to know what you think

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed030's Note - It is possible yes, A man on his last chance is likely to improve. Plus he has brought in a lot of players and made positive changes to the coaching staff so it is certainly possible for him to turn things around. }

07 Aug 2015 12:55:19
Plus he has brought in a lot of players and made positive changes to the coaching staff
====================

Totally agree on the coaching changes being positive . But can't agree on the "brought in a lot of players" making an improvement. After all he bought a lot more players last year and we went backward.
I would like BR to succeed , will be brilliant for us but really can't see it, he works hard but don't think he got the experience to get us that extra boost.

Agree2 Disagree3

07 Aug 2015 17:14:15
Yeah but he seems to have brought in the right players for positions we needed to fill (apart from keeper)

To some extent, we bought players, some of which were not needed, our needs at GK and DM were not addressed despite 7 signings and the same issues in defence are still there. I would have to wait and see before making any judgements

ED' and Red's. let's have Q&A session like the Echo, would be great banter if you could give your opinions on the following:

1. ) What do you make of the summer transfer activity?

2. )What is a realistic expectation for Liverpool this season?

3.) What/Who are you most excited about?

4.)What's your biggest concern?

5.) Is Rodgers the right man to take the Reds forward?

{Ed030's Note - 1)Some good players brought in but not for the right players. 2) A challenge for top 4 and a domestic trophy. 3) Firmino as the lad is class and could prove a great buy for the club. 4) Rodgers management, however he seems to be keeping quieter which was one of his faults and hopefully the new staff will help improve the coaching. 5) Same as number 4 for me. 6) I can't predict financial position but around 70 points is my hope as in most seasons that gets you top 4. }

1. Happy with everyone we've brought in.
2. Realistic is 5th, with a strong win 4th or 5th is achievable.
3. Coutinho being even more awesome.
4. That the team drowns in negativity.
5. For the moment, yes.
6. 75 points.

1)I think we did very well, especially with Firmino, and despite overpaying a bit for Benteke, we got a really good striker this time. Also think Gomez was an excellent investment. 2)Top four is realistic. 3)Firmino and Coutinho together. 4)The defense, though I really think Clyne was another excellent buy for us. 5) Short answer: Yes. And I was ready for him to leave at the end of last season. 6) 73 points, 74 goals for, 42 against, Coutinho LFC player of the year, Can breaking into our midfield.

1). Summer transfer activity has been mixed. I believe we've made some good signings in Firmino, Milner and Ings for example, but so far, we have not managed to shift the players that needed shifting and that is a worry.

2). I think a realistic expectation would be to avoid last seasons atrocities and at least look like we want to make a go of it. Too many times last season the players looked like they didn't know what to do, they looked like fish out of water and it was embarrassing to watch at times.

3). I'm most excited about Firmino and his potential link up with Coutinho and Sturridge(who already have an understanding together). Hopefully, Firmino will compliment this further.

4). My biggest worry is that the last time we spent £30million or more on a battering ram, it didn't work out too well. I know Carroll and Benteke aren't the same player, but they both have similar attributes. Benteke has a lot more to his game though, so I'm not as worried as with Carroll.

5). I really don't think so personally. I think BR is perhaps a little too naive in his tactics and his man management. He's ostracized quite a few players in the dressing room, some of which are full and regular International players. I am of course, open to being very wrong and I hope to be very wrong too.

6). I won't predict a position we'll finish or the points, but what I will predict is this;

If Sturridge stays fit, then Coutinho and Sturridge will be the most feared partnership in the league. They already have a good understanding and Sturridge is always very quick to acknowledge and praise Coutinho for his assist. They seem to get on well and play well together, always looking for each other, very similar to Sturridge and Suarez, although not quite on that level yet.

United fan here. I am just looking at strikers of all the big clubs who are fighting for PL. You have Benteke, Origi, Ings, Sturidge and one or two you are waiting to offload. I also saw rumours you are in for Lacezette and one or two big name strikers. Assuming that u sign lacezette, who are your strongest front two in the starting line up u people want(from above list)? I heard before sometime Ings said he will sign only for a club where he will be a regular in starting 11. I believe Rodgers promised him a starting spot. Personally i don't like Ings and Origi starting up front. If you play one up top then there are too much of players in that department even to sit on the bench if all are fully fit.
Pardon me for if there are any spelling mistakes nothing offensive there.

The eds have made it pretty clear we won't be signing Lacazette. It'd have to be Benteke and Sturridge to start depending on how Brendan sets up. From the interviews Ings has done it doesn't sound like he's expecting to be a starter, seems he knows he'll have to work hard and take his opportunities when they come, same with Origi I suppose. They're both better options from the bench than we had striker wise last year.

Agree8 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 09:18:38
Lacazette isn't an option. Ings knows he's currently third choice behind Benteke and a fit Sturridge and knows he's got to earn anything more.

The interesting thing will be fitting Sturridge back in the team when he comes back from In jury.

Lacazette is paper talk and he will not be joining, Ings and Origi are likely to be coming off the bench most games or starters in the euro league.

Sturridge and Benteke are our best strikers but unlikely to play together as brendan prefers 1 up top so it will likely be Benteke or Sturridge with Firmino/lallana/Ibe/Markovic supporting from the wings. Then a midfield three of a combination of 5 eligible players in the middle from Can, Milner, Lucas, Hendo, Allen.

I feel that to stay solid defensively we will need to compress the pitch in the middle and have our full backs acting as wingbacks but we will need a proper holding midfielder to play this way to cover and fill the gaps.

It will be interesting to see how brendan manages the players this season and hopefully he works out what our best team is and sticks with them to let them gel as a team.

I don't think we are in for Lacazette in the slightest it would be an absurd move.

Hypothetically I think Lacazette and Sturridge would work well. I honestly have only watched Lacazette twice though in full matches.

Without Lacazette I'd say Sturridge and Benteke. I'm not sure the partnership would work but they are individually tough to handle. for most defenses. I would hope playing alongside another striker would make Benteke work harder.

Never got the Ings purchase myself.

Benteke and Sturridge when fit is our top two.

I think we have one of the strongest looking strike forces in the league to be honest. Benteke and Sturridge (once fit) up front with Ings, Origi and Firmino as other options things are looking very good.

I'm favouring the diamond formation with 2 up top like 2013/4.
So top 2 at minute are Firmino and Benteke with Coutinho at the tip of the diamond.
When Sturridge is fit, he will replace Firmino, Firmino will replace Coutinho and Coutinho will drop back into one of the 2 midfielders.
The other midfielder will be Hendo and Utility man Milner will drop back to defensive player in diamond.
That's assuming everyone is fit and rested.

07 Aug 2015 14:45:08
I think Origi will prove a much better buy than people thought. Ings is a good player, potentially very good, but I don't know he made the right move coming here purely because we ended up buying Benteke. Could have had more playing time elsewhere. Hope I'm wrong though and they all have a part to play in a really good season for us.

I think we will start the season with Benteke up top, Coutinho in the hole, Firmino and Ibe on the wings, Hendo and Milner centrally. It will be really hard not to start Benteke and Sturridge together if they are both fit, especially knowing how well Sturridge worked in tandem with Suarez.

07 Aug 2015 16:13:20
Ings will prove to be a very good buy I think - On paper its hard to see him get past Benteke and Sturridge of course but i can't look past him i do have a feeling we may see him hold down a spot somehow come midway - His work ethic, his morales in terms of knowing this is my chance i'm going to work twice as hard and not only that but the guys intelligence - you can never look to much into pre season but what you can look at is how a striker likes to play and he creates runs and space every single time he's on the field and when you have the likes of coutinho, firmino, henderson, milner, ibe, lallana etc they will find these runs and everyone knows the boy can finish So for me Ings will be deadly at some point this season as he fits the way we love to play

I think you have to play Sturridge and Benteke together, neither will want to warm the bench. These two players will create havoc for opposing defenders, not to mention the incredible movement that Coutinho and Firmino will provide, along with their goals. Personally I think LFC have the most feared attacking line up in the Premier league. Also don't discount the influence of O'Driscoll on the team. He's been brought in to instill confidence in the players in the form of better ball retention, better decision making. Mark my words we will be up there. YNWA

I have a good feeling about Sunday.
My prediction is:

Stoke City 1: Liverpool 3

I definitely feel our strike force will be too much for them and it seems that Shawcross is out for 2 months, I think that that will play to our advantage.

Gap between liverpool and top 4 is the no of goals.

When we came 2nd we scored 100+, when came out from top 4 it was just 52, really.

Score more goals, theory is back.

Benteke 15 plus, firmino 10 plus, he is a second striker and cam, coutinho and lallana defo 5plus goal scorers 40 plus goals.

Milner and hendo will get goals where ever they play add 10 to the tally. that's almost 60.

Then we have some dark horses and substitues who are really capable.

Believable1 Unbelievable5

07 Aug 2015 04:59:45
But we still have a manager that isn't quite sure how or where to play players. When we scored that many goals, we had two class forwards - all we had to do was get the ball to them. Last year showed that when we had to rely on a game plan with tactics only, we fell way short of top 4 quality. We will need Benteke, Sturridge and Milner to be on song this year, plus a heap of luck to make top 4 comfortably IMO.

I don't want to go back to that. Winning teams are built from the back.

07 Aug 2015 09:07:58
I totally agree with you all that the defense has got to be tight and that all league winning teams have a solid back line.
However just going back to the year we finished second, I don't remember anyone complaining about our defense because we were playing such open attacking football.
If the opponent scored 3 then we would score 4 or 5.
It was just so exciting and encouraging at the time knowing that Liverpool were going into a match thinking we would score several goals.
It was brilliant as a supporter and must have been for the players as well, the confidence that we all had was amazing.
Suppose it came back to bight us in the bum. :(

Exactly muscatred. It's all about the goals.
We had a miserly defence under Kenny actually, but look how many draws there were.
One point for a draw is no good these days.
Better to win 3-2 or whatever.
Third and forth positions in the league (which is what we are fighting for IMO) will be decided by the most effective attack.

Agree0 Disagree1

07 Aug 2015 11:25:51
It's not a matter of "complaining" about our defence. It's just absolutely factual that in the season before last we were scoring for fun but conceding at a record rate too.

Last window we didn't succeed in addressing the defensive issues - neither by shipping out nor bringing in.

This year I think Clyne will make things a lot better and Gomez just might turn out to be a major find. So we are better.

But. in my view, we still have not sorted out the 2 major issues in our back 5.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2015 12:32:05
agree that attack will be more important. our defence isn't the best but had we scored more goals last year, top 4 would have been easy.

we kept 14 clean sheets in the end so having a striker who bagged 20 goals would have been the difference.

Eds, I was wondering how often a player is actually watched before the decision is made to buy them? It seems to me that a lot of players, especially during summers with big tournaments, have interest "reported" after a handful of games that are usually an outlier. Teams obviously do not have scouts at every game but do they go back and watch film of the player at games they haven't sent scouts to? Also how much of scouting is quantitative with sites like whoscored or whatever playing a role? I understand every club will do it differently but if you could give insight into common practices I would really appreciate it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - how many times they will be watched and how they are watched varies. It is impossible to say as each is an individual case. Whoscored is not used as far as I am aware. Usually it is wyscout, scout7 or instat that gets used for scouting. A lot of that is scouts that are analysing performances or forthcoming opponents as well.}

07 Aug 2015 05:58:30
Appreciate it Ed, it just seems like a lot of purchases are based off of a small sample size and I was curious if that was the case.
